A Look Inside
No door, no window, no anything. I can barely
remember my own name. I don’t know where I am or why I’m here. The only objects in the room are a rock, a clock, and a bouquet of fresh roses. Pushed through a metal slot in the wall is what I can only imagine is my food. The chunky blue gel square looked appalling, but my hunger was overpowering. I get around halfway done before everything turns to black. Suddenly, there’s a bright light overhead and I’m lying on the examination table being pushed down a hall. My vision is still blinded but I can hear shrieks and cries coming from either side of me. I enter a sterile white room and the screams are no longer audible. The lights dim slightly and my sight comes back. Standing over me is a man with thick, bottle cap glasses in a lab coat. A wave of memories flood my mind and I realize it’s my father in the lab coat. I try to turn my head and see more of the room. However, this is when I find out that my whole body
I still can’t remember everything. The door opens and I hear a female figure entered the room, I can only assume that this is my mother. They immediately start working. I can’t feel anything at all physically and I’m thankful for this because they’re cutting me open. For hours I lay there, not knowing what they are doing. A strong sense of déjà vu strikes me and I know I’ve done this before. My father reappears over me and I catch a quick glimpse of myself in the reflection on his glasses. Teeth, I think, so many teeth everywhere. Then everything goes back to black. No door, no window, no anything. I can barely remember my own name. Beside me is another examination table with a sleeping boy. Other than the “43” branded into his neck he seems almost normal. Then he seemingly opens his eyes and my stomach churns. He has no eyes or even eye sockets, the place

is immobilized.
where his eyes should have been have fused together.
IS CHILD 42 WORTH READING?
When I began reading “Child 42 “ my first thought was that it is a fast paced, thrilling novel that gets your attention right from the first line. After reading the first chapter I was sold. Although at the beginning I thought the idea was a bit of a cliche, they used interesting characters to up-cycle the old idea. Even in the title, “Child 42” gets you thinking about the story, do the parents have other patients?By using 1st person I felt a particular connection with the main character, it was like I was there in the lab with him. The way the book was written was quite informal as well which made it extremely easy and natural to read. What makes this book so relatable to such a varied audience is that, no matter who you are, you have felt alone and scared at some point in your life, even if it isn’t to this extreme. Throughout the book the writers give us little hints that there is something bigger happening, which made me want to read on. Not only did it include the right amount of mystery and suspense but there wasn’t too much gore. Films and novels are getting more violent and gory but this story remained mild while keeping you on the edge of your seat. This novel was the perfect balance of adventure, mystery and horror. I strongly recommend it if you enjoy reading science fiction and suspense.
