My Adonis, a son of Pleasantly Perfect, out of the Elusive Quality mare Silent Justice, covered the distance over a fast track in 1:40.56. Bred in Kentucky by K & G Stables, My Adonis has now won two of five starts and finished second three times. The winner’s paycheck of $120,000 on Saturday night raised his career bankroll to $171,000. Sent off as the heavy favorite at odds of 3-5, My Adonis returned $3.20 to win, $2.40

The winner takes home $600,000 in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot and that would be plenty of graded earnings to get him into the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Breen’s previous $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot starters were West Side Bernie, who finished second to Big Drama in 2008, and Sweet Ducky, who wound up fourth behind Gourmet Dinner last year. The chestnut runner is owned by White Hall Lane Farm and is trained by David A. Vivian. The win by Citizen Advocate marked the fourth of her six-race career. She earned $90,000 for her effort on Saturday, which raised her lifetime bankroll up to $247,900. power available to you. There is a relationship between a driver and his car. For instance, when you’re sliding a car around in a drift, a very small input will give you a very large result. I think if a jockey is aware of what the horse wants, a very small input can get you a good result. Any driving instructor will tell a driver, don’t fight the car. The car doesn’t drive itself and is only doing what it’s been told to do seconds ago. This has a curious similarity to the racetrack when a rider fights his horse.” It occurs to me that trip notes would be right up his alley. “In horse-racing there are many changes in lead and running order. Where are they in their strategic plan? There are so many changes in such a short time as they jockey for position, a term that we use in car racing but actually comes from you guys. Just like our best drivers, it seems the best jockeys are the ones who can adapt to change, to make the most of a situation that has altered from their original plan that could well have been thrown out the window five seconds after the start. “It is similar with track condition. Drifting is the same. It can begin to deteriorate from weather or having been raced on. Oil spills, petrol spills, methanol causing fire you can’t see. Fortunately their EMT emergency response time of 7-1/2 seconds is the best in the world and in the UK requires an actual surgeon to be on hand. It is not always a black-and-white winner, and the public may have to wait several minutes for the decision. It’s a lot like how ice-skating would be judged. You only get once chance to get them hooked.” This was true for me too. Despite all the years I have known Shawn, there was no guarantee that this first trip to the track would stretch beyond a mere formality. But when he chose to come back again with fiancée, Erin, and two dear friends before closing day, he was not doing it out of politeness but out of genuine desire. Shawn could hardly wait to usher his new guests to the paddock, where firsttimer Tammy felt encouraged by the body language and a whispered tout of the last horse in the parade, Flashy Helmsman. Her modest across-the-board wager yielded more than just a nice return. The investment opened the door on what Shawn was surprised not more was made of: betting. “You’re never going to take betting out of the sport, to sustain it, and to build it up. You don’t want to feel dirty doing it. People go to the track to bet, and it should be embraced. We all know that there is a small element of people who are addicted to gambling who would bet on anything, whether it be horseracing or who’s in a fight at Thanksgiving dinner. But any concern about betting giving the game a shady image only raises more anxiety in a newcomer. The more a track does, the more it sanctions those of us coming. It’s like going to Vegas, it doesn’t feel weird to someone new because Vegas embraces it, advertises it. Betting kind of flies under the radar otherwise, even though it is engrained into the culture. “It is a bit like how marketing and sponsorship go hand in hand in drifting. If you see a car without a big logo across the side of it, it has less credibility, an unsponsored car with a small budget. The ones most involved in our demographic are

those sponsors that offer products tasty to our clientele like energy drinks and soda. They are companies that sell car-care products, tires, apparel, video games, things that are lifestyle-oriented purchases. The sponsorship is engrained and expected at this point. Fans usually buy a hat or a sweatshirt, a sticker or swag on top of the $8 to $12 admission price, and if they hang out all day, may spend $50 to $75. To me, betting is similar. It is actually a great way to get people more emotionally involved knowing that they are going to potentially win money.” Tammy’s beginner’s luck did not hold for her second bet, but the small profit that remained at the end of the day had raised

OCT. 22, 2011 Cypress, CA Challenge Championships return to Los Alamitos for the ninth time The Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships will return to Los Alamitos Race Course on Saturday, Oct. 29. The event is the richest and most successful program in American Quarter Horse racing today, a championship series developed for the “World’s Fastest Horse.” The Bank of America Racing Challenge program provides more racing opportunities and larger purses for older American Quarter Horses than any other program throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America. This will be the ninth time since 1993 that Los Alamitos has served as host to the Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships. The Southern California racetrack has established itself as an unsurpassed leader in its support of Quarter Horse racing, offering year-round live racing with a record of four stakes worth $1 million or more. Total purses in 2011 will exceed $20 million and marquee events include the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, Golden State Million

Futurity, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and the Los Alamitos Super Derby. The Ed Burke Million, Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million make up the Los Alamitos Bonanza, which pays a $1 million bonus to the connections of any horse that sweeps all three of the races for 2-year-olds. The track is also home to the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion of Champions for older horses. Owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys from across the country will travel to Los Alamitos next week for the Bank of America Challenge as well as the AQHA Racing Conference. In addition to the lovely fall weather, kind racing surface and full cooperation of everyone in the stable area, they will be greeted by the track’s owner, Dr. Ed Allred. Under Allred’s leadership, Los Alamitos Race Course has enjoyed tremendous growth. The major change in the face of Los Alamitos Race Course in the past 15 years has been the addition of The Vessels Club, a $5 million lavish Turf Club built by Allred and named in honor of the founding family of the track. Since its opening in December 1995, The Vessels Club has earned the reputation as one of the finest horse racing venues in the country. In 2009, Los Alamitos hosted the Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships and fans in attendance and at simulcast facilities were treated to an evening of thrilling finishes and record-setting performances. New stakes records were posted by Fighter On Fire in the $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship (Grade 1), Saturday Nite Fever in the $200,000 Bayer Legend Derby Challenge Championship (Grade 1) and Stylish Jess BR in the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (Grade 1). “Los Alamitos Race Course is happy to welcome back the Bank of America Challenge Championships,” said Allred. “It is always wonderful to see people from all over the country get together for a night of Quarter Horse racing. It is an honor to open up Los Alamitos Race Course for our fellow Quarter Horse owners and breeders. We are all looking forward to an exciting night of racing.” In addition to Los Alamitos, the other tracks that have served as hosts are Sunland Park, Turf Paradise, Retama Park, Sam Houston Race Park, Evangeline Downs, Lone Star Park and Fair Grounds. OCT. 23, 2011 Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA Properly Snowbound in Wild West upset

By Ty Wyant Jose Ramon Sandoval’s homebred Properly Snowbound made a long striding, late run at 17-1 odds to win the $100,000 Wild West Futurity on Sunday night at Los Alamitos. The Wild West Futurity is for juveniles who have raced in the Rocky Mountain, Intermountain and Northwest regions this year. Properly Snowbound appeared to be a horse who will excel at further than the 350 yards of the Wild West Futurity by accelerating throughout the last half of the 350-yard stakes to get the win in :17.70 while winning by an expanding onehalf length. Alex Bautista was aboard for trainer Roberto Sanchez. “He surprised me,” Bautista added. “He came into the trials having won three in a row, but in his first race here all he was looking at was the lights. He needed the experience of running at this track. He finished as strongly as he started tonight.” Properly Snowbound, grey gelded son of Snowbound (TB), won his first three starts in the Northwest before heading to Los Alamitos for the Wild West Futurity. He won a maiden futurity for Idaho-breds at Sandy Downs to highlight that winning streak. He didn’t impress in his first start at Los Alamitos in the Wild West Futurity trial when he finished fifth after being bumped at the start, however came up with the seventh-fastest qualifying mark from the two trials. “To be honest I didn’t think he was that good of a horse after the trials,” Dominguez said.

Properly Snowbound

“But he started to feel better after the trials. We took him to the track more and we schooled him in the gate. He started doing everything nice and easy. I was surprised in the way he ran in the final. He ran a great race.” Willie Dasher was second and Veyron finished third, a neck behind Willie Dasher. Martha Wells homebred runner-up Willie Dasher, a son of Separatist, has a maiden win at Los Alamitos from seven starts and qualified for the Desert Classic Futurity at Turf Paradise. Travis and Wendy Saxton’s Veyron, a son of Ivory James, kept his consistent record intact with his third-place

finish. The Bret Vickery-trained gelding has been on the board in seven of eight starts with a third in the Bitterroot Futurity.

RACE RECAPS covered his 1-mile trip in 1:39.63 while defeating 3-1 favorite No It Ain’t by a head. The gelding was coming off of a third-place finish in a $5,000 non-winners-of-three claiming race at Albuquerque Oct. 12. Captain Bucko was bred in Kansas by Ralph Lilja, and his sire, Tricky Six, is a 21-year-old sire by Saratoga Six who won stakes at Ak-Sar-Ben, Remington Park, and Louisiana Downs from 1992-93. To date, Tricky Six has sired one stakes winner and the earners of more than $968,900 from 40 starters. Tricky Six entered stud in 1995 and stands at Chikaskia River Racing LLC in Kansas. Captain Bucko is also one of two winners from four starters produced by Immune Moon, a winning and stakes-placed daughter of the Boldnesian stallion Moonsplash. Racing in eight different states from 199298, Immune Moon won 13 of 80 races and earned $113,361. Captain Bucko has won three of his nine outs, and the $18,000 winner’s share of the Charles Taylor Derby purse pushed his bankroll to $27,395, all of which has been earned this year. The gelding was unraced as a 2-year-old. Captain Bucko returned an $85.80 win mutuel and combined with runner-up No It Ain’t for an $884.20 ($2) exacta. Happy Toes finished third, two lengths behind the winner, to complete a $6,876 ($2) trifecta. There was one winning $1 trifecta ticket. Alert Rocket ran fourth and was followed by Zarb’s Hot Friend, Trouble Rules, Ultimate Question, Tart N Smart, Alert The Press, and Whoa Sailor. No It Ain’t is a chestnut Kentucky-bred gelding by Yes It’s True campaigned by Vance Alfrey and Stuart Eskew. A $3,500 buy at the January 2010 Keeneland Association

Horses of All Ages Sale, No It Ain’t has won two of 12 races and has earned $34,196, and his stakes resume includes a third-place run in the 5 1/2-furlong, $30,000 Harvest Stakes at Albuquerque on Sept. 11. Happy Toes races for Donald J. Elkins. At SunRay Park last spring, the California-bred Ministers Wild Cat gelding put together a three-race win streak that included a pair of allowance victories. All told, Happy Toes has won four of eight starts and has banked $46,895.

With Joel Rosario notching his third of four riding wins on the afternoon, Irish Art tracked pacesetter Shred the Secrets, overtook him entering the stretch and drew clear under a hand ride while running the distance in 1:11.62. Luckarack, ridden by Alonso Quinonez, rallied for second, one-half length in front of Shred the Secrets and jockey Patrick Valenzuela in the field of eight. “Look at him,” exclaimed winning trainer Carla Gaines afterward. “It looks like he didn’t even run. He took to the course like a duck to water.” After finishing seventh in his racing debut at 6 furlongs

Irish Art’s first sprint start over Santa Anita unique hillside layout was having drawn the rail. “As it turned out, it wasn’t an issue,” she said. “He ran a very good race down the hill,” said Rosario. “I don’t know how good the competition was, but he ran

a really good race. In the race where he broke his maiden, he went right to the lead, but there was a lot of speed that day. Today, he stuck close to the pace, so I think he can do whatever he wants to do.” Gaines said she wasn’t sure what might be next for Irish Art, but noted that he is nominated to Hollywood Park’s Grade I Hollywood Derby at 1 ¼ miles on turf on Nov. 27. Irish Art paid $4.80, $3.60 and $3 for his Uniformity victory. The mutuels on Luckarack were $6.20 and $4.80. Shred the Secrets paid $5.80 to show. The winning purse of $41,130 elevated the earnings of Irish Art to $101,480.

Jesse In Town

ridden Sheza Princess Belle raced the 350 yards in :17.455 for her fourth-straight win. Alejandro Ibarra’s Lifes Been Good was second by a head over Y/N Horse Stables’ Skyline Version. A daughter of Heza Motor Scooter, Sheza Princess Belle started her winning streak with a maiden win at Arapahoe Park in her fifth career start after gaining one second from four starts at two. She then won a non-winners-oftwo at The Downs at Albuquerque before taking her Desert Classic Derby trial by three quarters of a length as the even-money favorite.

Will Rogers Downs, Claremore, OK Jesse In Town upsets Turf Paradise, Phoenix, Taylor Pair AZ By Ty Wyant Sheza Princess Belle Mary Passmore’s Jesse In dominates Desert Town, an 8-1 outsider, battled to a game upset of the Heath Classic Derby

OCT. 22, 2011

By Ty Wyant The Eloy Mendoza-owned and -trained Sheza Princess Belle took a commanding early lead and raced unchallenged to a one-length win in the $24,462 Desert Classic Derby at Turf Paradise on Sunday afternoon. The Michael Iammarino-

Taylor-trained favorites WRS Special Shoe and First Klas Fred in the $50,000 Cherokee Challenge Stakes on Saturday at Will Rogers Downs. The Cody Smith-ridden Jesse In Town hooked up with WRS Special Shoe, the 22-10 second choice, and the two fought for the last half of the

300-yard dash to get the neck win in :15.303. Champion First Klas Fred, the 9-5 favorite, was one-half length back for third in the full field of older horses. Trained by Jackie Kirby, Jesse In Town proved to be a value for his 8-1 odds after moving up his class after being claiming for $10,000 at Fair Meadows on July 21. His new connections shipped the 4-year-old gelding by Mr Jess Perry to Prairie Meadows and he came though with a dominating nearly 3-length win in a $10,000 claiming race and finished second at 7-2 odds in the $20,000 Prairie Meadows Bonus Challenge. Williams Racing Stables’ homebred WRS Special Shoe, a son of First Down Leveaux, continues to impress as a 9-year-old with his secondplace finish in his 69th start. The earner of $865,000 with 24 wins remains in peak form at his eighth year of competition with a win in the Terrace Hill Stakes at Prairie Meadows in his previous start. Denis and Julie Schoenhofer’s First Klas Fred, the 2009 champion 2-year-old gelding, looked to be regaining the form that saw him win the Ruidoso Futurity two summers ago. He won the Classic

Chevrolet Stakes by one length in his start before the Cherokee Challenge Stakes.

Golden Gate Fields, Berkeley, CA Sourdough Sam rallies to win Oakland Stakes Sourdough Sam outran his 9-1 odds to win Saturday’s 6-furlong, $65,280 Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Ridden by David Lopez for owner John A. Nicoletti and trainer Dean Pederson, Sourdough Sam rallied off of fractions of :22.15 and :44.89 before he reached the wire in 1:09.68. The $39,400 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $168,400. Sourdough Sam also marked the 1,000th career riding victory in the U.S. for Lopez, a native of Peru. “I’m very excited to get my 1,000th win in this race,” Lopez said. “The trainer told me to be patient with him. He broke a little slow, and I knew we were far back but I didn’t panic. I knew I was on a good horse, and when I took him out in the clear he did his thing.” Sourdough Sam was bred in California by his owner, and the 4-year-old gelding is one of five stakes winners from 137 SureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • October 25, 2011 • Vol. 5 No. 43 17

starters sired by Decarchy, a stallion by Distant View who won the 2002 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (Grade 2) at Santa Anita Park. Now 14, Decarchy has sired the earners of more than $5 million, including Teapartysuccess, a 3-year-old filly who won the July 10 George Wafer Memorial Stakes at Arapahoe Park. He is owned by and stands for a $4,000 fee at Magali Farms at Santa Ynez, Calif. Sourdough Sam’s dam, General Luster, is a 17-year-old winning daughter of the Seattle Slew stallion General Meeting. The mare has produced five winners from five starters, including Panettone, a full brother to Sourdough Sam who ran third in the $71,340 Jack Goodman Stakes for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita Oct. 10. A half sister to Sourdough Sam, the Redattore (BRZ) filly Sweet Baguette, ran second in last year’s Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at the Alameda County Fair meet at Pleasanton. Sourdough Sam has won five of nine races, including the 1-mile, $61,400 Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate in ‘09. Sent to post at odds of 9-1, Sourdough Sam returned a $20.20 win mutuel. Shudacudawudya, the 9-10 favorite,

Ismene

finished second, 1 ¼ lengths behind the winner, to complete a $24.20 ($1) exacta. Starboardlights, Our Minesweeper, Tribesman, Skipshot, Hexbreaker, and Quick Enough completed the order of finish. Shudacudawudya is a homebred 4-year-old gelding by Marino Marini who has earned $165,216 from 11 outs for his owner, Brett Mason. The gelding has won five races, including the 2009 Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate. A $1,000 buy at the 2007 California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Northern California Sale, Starboardlights races for Stewball Stable and Kristin Finkel. The 5-year-old Helmsman gelding has won three of 14 starts and has banked $137,224, and his stakes resume includes a runner-up finish to Goggles McCoy in the Aug. 6, $68,640 Jess Jackson Owners Handicap on the turf at the Sonoma County Fair meet at Santa Rosa.

Santa Anita Race Park, Arcadia, CA Sister Moon, at 1-5 odds, upset by Ismene in $80,600 Anoakia Nearly two months after

her record-setting debut at Del Mar, Sister Moon failed to replicate that electrifying performance Saturday when unable to overtake front-running Ismene in Santa Anita’s $80,600 Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Bet down to 1-5 favoritism in a field of six, Sister Moon broke awkwardly, but made a swooping move from fifth to take aim on Ismene, the 7-1 third choice. Sister Moon, however, came up one length short in the race run in 1:08.91. Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela for trainer Bill Spawr, Ismene sped through fractions of 21.92, 44.30 and 55.84 while unmolested. Sister Moon, handled by Joel Rosario, never did catch up in the gallop-out after the pair crossed the wire. It was 7 ¾ lengths back to third-pace Evelyn’s Dancer. The winner and runner-up had made their racing debuts eight days apart at Del Mar. After Ismene scored by 2 ¼ lengths in 1:04 for 5 ½ furlongs on Aug. 13, Sister Moon’s debut on Aug. 21 resulted in a victory by 9 ¾ lengths in Polytrack-record time of 1:02.70 for the distance. “She’s the real deal,” Spawr said of the Californiabred daughter of Tribal Rule

he trains for owner-breeder Stephen Ferraro. “We’re just giving her time and letting her mature because I think she could be special.” Spawr’s pre-race instructions to Valenzuela became a matter of interpretation. “I told him to make one run, but we have P. Val, so. . .” Spawr said before hesitating. “He (Valenzuela) did say he took her back and made one run,” the trainer continued, “but we were on the front.” Prior to the Anoakia, John Sadler said he, too, was taking his time with the homebred Dixie Union filly he trains for Jerry and Ann Moss. “When she won at Del Mar,” he said, “she ran so big, bigger than we thought, we wanted to give her extra time.” According to Rosario, Sister Moon “broke a little bit slow” in the Anoakia. He added, “But the winner was really fresh... really quick out of the gate. And it was the first time for my filly on the dirt.” Ismene paid $16.40, $3.60 and $2.40 while the place and show prices on Sister Moon were $2.10. Evelyn’s Dancer, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, paid $5.20 to show. The winner earned $52,830 to bring her two-race total to $90,630.
