FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEGENDS TO GATHER THURSDAY AT HERITAGE Festivities surrounding this week’s Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale will kick off Thursday at 5 p.m. with music by Joe Merrick and his band at the pre-sale party. Merrick, the youngest son of American Quarter Horse legend Walter Merrick, will also open A Night With The Legends of American Quarter Horse Racing in the Heritage Place Auditorium at 6 p.m. “We’re looking for a big turnout Thursday,” said Heritage Place’s Chief Financial Officer and General Manager Jeff Tebow. “There has been a lot of talk about the event, and I think that it is something that everyone is going to enjoy.” Scott Wells and Chris Kotulak will facilitate the on-stage event with the American Quarter Horse Racing Legends listed to the right. Ben Hudson, owner/publisher of TRACK Magazine which is producing this event in conjunction with Heritage Place, said, “I have talked to each of the participants and they’re all excited about being here. “Scott and Chris have some good talking points for them, but I don’t think any of them will need much encouragement. They will be in the ring in easy chairs, and the audience will be able to join the discussion. It’s a chance for everyone to visit with these legends. We plan to make this an annual event.” Friday action at Heritage Place begins at 10 a.m. with the auction of Melvin and Judy Hatley’s historic Orren Mixer paintings of Go Man Go and Triple Chick. The auction of those paintings will be followed by 51 head of Thoroughbreds and Paints and then 140 Quarter Horse yearlings. Grand Prairie, TX Lone Star simulcast pavilion targeted for early December reopening Top officials of Global Gaming, the subsidiary of the Chickasaw Nation that owns and operates Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, invited leaders of all major horse organizations, representing breeders, owners and trainers, to a meeting last Tuesday at the Texas Thoroughbred Association office. Those present learned that Lone Star’s Post Time Pavilion is scheduled for a soft re-opening in early December and a grand re-opening sometime in January. When it first opened on Kentucky Derby Weekend in 1996, the Post Time Pavilion received state-of-the-art accolades. Nonetheless, after 15 years of almost daily use, Global Gaming targeted the simulcast facility for a complete inside remodeling and renovation to include a highend sports bar, additional and larger VIP rooms, all incorporating the available technology to wager on live and simulcast races and a new upscale menu. The cost of work on the Post Time Pavilion is projected to be $2.7 million. Global plans to tear down the original tote board and replace it with a modern version adjoined by a new large screen Daktronics board in the infield. Global has other improvements planned for the interior of the grandstand, including making Champions Room more Group Sales friendly and installing flat-screen TVs. The
backstretch dorm rooms and restrooms will also undergo significant upgrades. Discussions also focused on Global’s commitment to horse racing, intent to return Lone Star to its former position as one of North America’s leading tracks, legislative issues and plans to move forward.
OCT. 28, 2011 Rapid Redux ties record; wins 19th straight Robert Cole Jr.’s Rapid Redux tied the North American record for consecutive wins, notching his 19th straight in a starter allowance race at muddy Laurel Park Oct. 27. The 5-year-old son of Pleasantly Perfect tied Peppers Pride and Zenyatta, who also won 19 straight races during their careers. The chestnut gelding defeated four rivals in the seven-furlong contest, covering the distance in 1:24.07 in his 2 3/4-length victory. J. D. Acosta rode him to his recordtying win. Trained by David Wells, Rapid Redux was cutting back to one turn for the first time in 12 starts. During his streak he has raced at seven different racetracks and distances ranging from five furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. Claimed for $6,250 in October 2010, he improved to 25-1-1 in 39 lifetime starts and earnings of $332,544. “I’m kind of freaked out,” said Cole. “It was a little tougher than I was expecting. We got it done and I’m very thankful. This track has such a long stretch and a long run to the turn, I was worried. It wasn’t a desperate performance but we got it done. “I think I’ve owned more than a thousand horses in my day and kind of hope they all
improve tremendously and get some kind of joy like this. You dream about it but typically these dreams don’t come true.” It was a two-horse race from gate to wire, as Rapid Redux broke sharply from Post 4 and went right to the front. He was tracked closely by Rich Hero through opening fractions of :23.31 and :46.25. Rich Hero cut into the lead, getting to within about a length as they approached the turn. Rapid Redux opened up his lead to 2 lengths at the eighth-pole, but was tested in the final furlong when Rich Hero continued to stay within striking distance despite drifting out. Rapid Redux dug in gamely in deep stretch to prevail for the third time at Laurel. Rich Hero, ridden by Abel Castellano Jr., finished 7 lengths ahead of third-place Shordawatyadrink. “I didn’t want to make any mistakes,” Acosta said. “It was really an intense moment. You don’t want to do anything wrong. You want to be a part of history.” Sent off at 1-5, Rapid Redux paid $2.40, $2.10, and $2.10. “The horse has a tremendous amount of heart,” Wells said. “He feels and sees the horses or he hears them coming and he does not want to be passed. You saw that again today. He heard that horse coming and he just dug back in.” Cole and Wells said they will look at condition books in the Mid-Atlantic and try to get Rapid Redux a chance at his record-breaking win in three to four weeks. Rapid Redux was bred in Kentucky by Fortress Pacific Equine and is out of the Storm Cat mare Thiscatsforcaryl. He was an $85,000 purchase for his original owners, K & G
Stables, at the Keeneland September 2007 yearling sale. He was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

Nominations for this year’s $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (Grade 3) closed on Saturday with a record number of 252 possible starters making the list. That number represents an increase of 5.8 percent over last year’s total of 238 nominations, which had marked the highest number since the race began in 2002. “We are thrilled by another record number of nominations for the $1 millio Delta Downs Jackpot,” said Steve Kuypers, Vice President and General Manager of Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel. “We believe horsemen recognize the tremendous value of winning a graded race with this kind of purse money. It gives them countless options for mapping out a road to next year’s Kentucky Derby.” No less than five previous $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot winning trainers have nominated horses to this year’s race. They include Ken McPeek, who won the race in 2006 with Birdbirdistheword; Bill Mott and Mark Casse, who dead heated for the win with Z Humor and Turf War respectively in 2007; David Fawkes, who sent out eventual Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Big Drama to a win in 2008; and Todd Pletcher, who saw his charge Rule win the race in 2009. The rich 140-year history of Fair Grounds will be celebrated on the track the first Saturday of the meet, Nov. 26, with the one-time-only running of the Fair Grounds Legends Purse, pitting contemporary horses outfitted in the historically accurate “throwback” colors of the greatest equine stars ever to run in New Orleans. Track announcer John G. Dooley will call the names of legends like Black Gold, Whirlaway and Risen Star, as if competing against one another in a fantasy race. The Fair Grounds Legends Purse will be a standard pari-mutuel contest, with the only deviations from normal procedure being the silks and the race call from Dooley.

Wagering Menu will offer bettors more opportunities to cash tickets, large and small. For those seeking the big score, the new “Black Gold 5” is a jackpot Pick 5 carryover wager requiring the bettor to hold the lone successful ticket with the winners of five consecutive races. On cards when there is no single-ticket winner, half of the pool will be paid as consolation to tickets with the most correct and half will go to the carryover. The Black Gold 5 will begin on Race 5 every day and the bet carries a $.50 minimum. Fair Grounds is also proud to be the first racetrack in Louisiana to offer rolling Daily Doubles. Previously available twice per day, a Daily Double will now be offered beginning in every race (except, of course,
the last). The availability of the Black Gold and rolling Daily Doubles remains subject to the approval of the Louisiana State Racing Commission.

OCT. 30, 2011 Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA Igotyourtac upsets Golden State Million By Ty Wyant
Double Bar S Ranch’s homebred Igotyourtac was the final horse eligible to the Grade 1, $1,218,400 Golden State Futurity and at 44-1 long shot, but raced to a game win in the 400-yardmajor futurity on Sunday night. Saul Ramirez was aboard the son of Tac It Like A Man for the first time and they won by neck over 11-1 outsider Jess Lips while it was another neck back to 8-1 shot Last To Fire. The three long shots combined for a$1 trifecta payoff of $10,016 and keyed — with 45-1 fourth-place finisher First Outburst — for a $1 superfecta payoff of $76,775. The superfecta payoff is nearly as much as First Outburst earned in the race ($82,183). Igotyourtac had a clear running path after the two horses next to him drifted away from him at the start. He then was able to accelerate throughout the 400 yards to be timed in :19.729. Igotyourtac, trained by Paul Jones, won a shake over stable mate over Unobeter to earn a starting spot in the Golden State Million. Unobeter then became ill with a high temperature a few days after the shake. “We probably would have had to scratch her because of her temperature. It was a huge piece of luck that Igotyourtac won the shake,” Jones said after the race. The win worth$492,828 was easily the most important win in Igotyourtac’s six-race career and pushed his career earnings to $510,298 for own-

The colt was winless in two starts this spring at Remington Park and then won a maiden race and a non-winners-of-two allowance race at Los Alamitos before finishing second behind Long Gone in their Golden State Million trial. Ramirez picked up the mount after several riders committed to other horses. “Rodrigo Aceves had the mount on this horse for the Golden State trials, but in the trials Rodrigo took off to ride Long Gone in the same trial,” Jones said. “Ramon (Sanchez) jumped on the horse, but then had to take off to ride Separate Fire. I was hoping to get Carlos Huerta to ride him, but when Eduardo Nicasio was gone for the weekend he had
the chance to ride the fastest qualifier (Last To Fire). “We didn’t have a rider for the race, but then Saul called me and asked me if he could ride the horse. Saul isa good guy and a good jockey and very good in big money races. I immediately called the owner and they were thrilled to have him ride the horse. I’m really happy for him because we’ve done well together in the past. It was nice to have him back in the Jones barn.” Separate Fire, the 2-1 favorite, finished last in her quest to stay alive for the Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza, a$1million bonus that goes to the connections of any horse who can win the Ed Burke Million the, Golden State Million and the Los Alamitos Two Million. The Jaime Gomez-trained son of Mr Jess Perry finished a nose behind fastest-qualifier Last To Fire in their trial. Third-place finisher Last To Fire was dismissed in the wagering despite setting the fastest-qualifying time of:19.707 while winning his maiden in his trial. He had trouble in his first three starts before his trial victory. In the $30,000 Golden State Juvenile, for two-yearolds who did not qualify for the Golden State Million, Ed Allred’s homebred Check My Thoughts scored his third win from five starts.
Eulices Gomez was aboard the Jim Glenn-trained Check My Thoughts for the threequarter-length win over Whata Corona Runner in :19.880 for the 400 yards. Sammy T finished third, another one-half length back. The Check Him Out-sired Check My Thoughts won the California Breeders Freshman Stakes and finished third in the Ed Burke Juvenile.

elevated the career earnings of Norvsky to $397,844. His only off-the-board showing was a fourth, 1 ¼ lengths behind victorious Liberian Freighter, in last April’s Grade II Arcadia Stakes at Santa Anita. Courtside, a 3-year-old gelding trained by John Sadler for breeders Lee and Susan Searing’s C R K Stable, netted his first stakes win in the Sprint. Joel Rosario sent him to the front immediately. Courtside was never seriously threatened while speeding through fractions of 21.36, 43.38 and 55.36. “He likes to run on the lead like that, and at six furlongs, that is the way to do it,” said Rosario. “I just let him get away and hoped that he would hold on. To me, it looks like he can hold on at six furlongs. He ran very good today.” Bob Black Jack, who raced in a good stalking position while handled by Patrick Valenzuela, finished second, one-half length ahead of M One Rifle and jockey Chantal Sutherland. Mensa Heat, the 3-2 choice in a field of seven, was of no consequence while running last. Courtside, sired by Cindago, was participating in his first

stakes race, but solid recent form in allowance races attracted enough support to put his odds at 9-2. He paid $11.40, $6.40 and $4.20. Bob Black Jack paid $6 and $4.20. M One Rifle paid $3.20 to show. Courtside’s first stakes victory was worth $60,000 which brought the gray gelding’s career total to $178,300 from a 5-2-0 record in 10 starts. Bejarano climaxed his brilliant day with a stirring ride atop Unzip Me, the 5-year-old mare who had captured 5 of 8 previous starts at 6 ½ furlongs over Santa Anita’s Hillside Turf Course and who had finished third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs. The 29-year-old jockey, riding Unzip Me for the ninth time, positioned her just behind the leading group coming down the hill, moved outside for the stretch run and streaked home to defeat West Ruler by 1 ¼ lengths in 1:12.53. Salty Sarah finished third, another neck back in the field of 11 fillies and mares. Trained by Marty Jones for breeders Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo as well as coowner Per Antonsen, Unzip Me paid $4.40, $3 and $2.80. The
mutuels on West Ruler were $6.20 and $4.60. Salty Sarah paid $7.60 to show. “She really ran her race today,” Jones said afterward. “She’s just an amazing horse. Rafael rode her great today. He got her into a nice comfortable position in a big field with some speed.” Commented Bejarano, “I followed the speed and made one big run. She has improved a lot, and she’s getting better. I think she will only keep getting better and better.” The victory in the Distaff, worth $75,000, raised the career earnings of Unzip Me to $893,228. The daughter of City Zip’s record became 13-4-3 in 23 career starts. The series of five stakes race exclusively for Californiabreds began with odds-on favorite Starlight Magic scoring by 1 ¾ lengths over Willa B Awesome in the $100,000 Robert H. Walter Juvenile Fillies while covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.47 under Bejarano. A gray daughter of Marino Marini, Starlight Magic raced in fourth through the early going, unleashed her bid nearing the far turn, overtook Willa B Awesome in midstretch and scored impressively in her first
route try. Willa B Awesome, ridden by Martin Pedroza, wound up a clear runner-up while crossing the wire 10 ½ lengths ahead of Raesunbridledfaith with Martin Garcia aboard in the field of six. The winner paid $3.20. Trained by Mark Glatt for Cory Wagner, Starlight Magic gained her second victory in four starts. The winning purse of $60,000 hiked her earnings to $96,780. Starlight Magic, bred by John and Diane Fradkin, was purchased by Wagner for $75,000 at this year’s Barretts May Sale. “She’s a free-running filly with a long stride and a good kick,” Bejarano said in the winner’s circle. “She’s improving with every race, and she’ll go further.” Bejarano notched his second successive victory in the $100,000 Bob Benoit Juvenile when Rousing Sermon ran down pace-setter Motown Men at the sixteenth pole to triumph by 2 ¼ lengths in 1:43.52 for the 1 1/16 miles. Owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, Rousing Sermon won convincingly in his first race around two turns after a pair of thirds

in sprint stakes that followed his maiden victory. “You couldn’t ask him to run any better,” noted winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Motown Men, who dictated a pedestrian pace with Gomez in the saddle, held on for second, one-half length ahead of Stoney Fleece in the field of nine 2-year-olds. As the co-second choice, Rousing Sermon paid $9.20 to win. The win by the son of Lucky Pulpit increased his earnings to $144,000. Bejarano said he had been working Rousing Sermon at Hollywood in preparation for the Juvenile. “He’s been getting better and better every work,” Bejarano said, “and the last work he did really good. When I saw (Motown Men) was hanging a little bit in the stretch, I got my opportunity to get clear, and my horse showed me a big kick.” Bejarano picked up his third victory of the afternoon with longshot Mandated Bliss in an allowance event at 6 ½ furlongs. Trained by Kathy Walsh for Al and Sandee Kirkwood, Mandated Bliss paid $25.

The Cluer was for males with the Queen Of The Green for female turf specialists. Each of the races was at one mile with One Call timed in 1:35.43 and Rare Sunset stopping the clock in 1:35.17. Ken Person and Thomas Johnson’s One Call, with Vicky Baze up, stalked pacesetting All Saint, the 2-1 favorite, and then rallied for the one-half length win at 22-1 odds after the perfect trip. Jaival finished third in the 11-horse field. One Call, who is trained by Person, raced to his first win since taking an allowance race at Lone Star Park in May. Following the race, winning trainer Donnie Von Hemel noted how age has benefitted the two-time winning Distaff filly. “She’s All In has progressed nicely as she’s gotten older and I think she may have her best ahead of her as a 5-year-old.” No trainer has won more Oklahoma Classics races than Donnie Von Hemel, who currently has 20 Oklahoma Classics wins. Former Remington Park trainer Steve Hobby is next with 10 Classics wins. She’s All In earned $75,400 for the win and now has lifetime earnings of $393,122. Berry had a plan for Gleaming from the start that played out perfectly. “I was hoping the 8, CJ Jones, would clear us to the front so I could get outside of her in the catbird seat, clear,” Berry explained. “She doesn’t like to get a lot of dirt thrown back in her face so I kept her in the open and she came on to make her run.” Gleaming was basically in the three-path off the rail for most of the Distaff Sprint, moving to the middle of the stretch of the turn when she took the lead from the pacesetting Approved Bluff.
