Miss Racy Jess races into Champion of Champions

November 6, 2011 • Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA By Ty Wyant urnett Ranches and Johnny Trotter’s Miss Racy Jess held off a belated bid from One Sweet Jess and raced into the Champion of Champions field with an impressive victory in the Grade 1, $987,350 Los Alamitos Super

quickly left the seventh post position and took advantage of her clear shot to the finish line. She opened up a three-quarter-length advantage by the midway point while Rodrigo Aceves was getting One Sweet Jess rolling in the final half of the race. However, One Sweet Jess never slowed and convincingly posted her most important career win and reached the potential she showed as a2-year-old at Ruidoso Downs. During that 2010 campaign at Ruidoso Downs, Miss Racy Jess won her first three starts — a maiden race, her Rainbow Futurity trial (but did not qualify for the futurity) and her All American Futurity trial. She was respected as the 2-1 second choice in the Grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity, however lost all chance

soon after the start when she was pinched back between horses and galloped across the finish line in eighth place. “Last year, she made the All American Futurity, but after getting bumped around hard in the final we were worried that mentally she would have a hard time coming back,” said Dr. Glenn Blodgett, Burnett Ranches horse division manager and resident veterinarian. “This year she’s found herself. She’s been in good condition and has enjoyed good breaks in her races. That’s exactly what we were hoping for tonight — a good break. We are excited. There’s nothing like good partnerships and good horses.” Miss Racy Jess returned from a winter rest this summer at Ruidoso Downs and capped

her threerace summer campaign by taking her trial to the Grade 1, $1.3 million All American Derby over Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity winner Givinitaroyaleffort by threequarters of a length, however her time was not quick enough to reach the field of the world’s richest Quarter Horse race for 3-year-old and older runners. Wood then took her to Los Alamitos and she shined in her first start under the Los Alamitos lights. She won her Los Alamitos Super Derby trial by one-half length and her time of :19.646 was the fastest qualifying time from four trials.

Miss Racy Jess’ owners are anxious for another shot at the Champion Of Champions after not winning the 2008 Champion Of Champions with that year’s Super Derby winner One Famous Eagle. “We are looking forward to the Champion of Champions,” Blodgett said. Anne W. Marion, president of Burnett Ranches, has made numerous trips to Los Alamitos to watch her horses compete and was on hand for Miss Racy

That’s not to say there were no anxious moments, mostly involving weather. It rained on Thursday into Friday afternoon but then remained completely clear and bright. Some trainers were concerned that the main track remained very sticky throughout the Saturday card. Two horses in the Marathon lost shoes walking on it while coming to the paddock. Several European trainers were upset that their scheduled turf training time on Thursday was cancelled by Churchill Downs as rain first began to fall about 9 a.m. They already play an extreme road game with an unfamiliar course, left hand turns, a long plane flight and quarantine. Now, their routine is disrupted. They were all fit enough but no trainer likes a disturbance that close to a major race, particularly one they felt could have been avoided with better communication. The rain had been forecast for days, and those affected

felt that alternatives should have been put forth. The one time that the Life at Ten aftermath may have played a part was in the swiftly made decision to scratch Announce from the Emirates Airline Filly and Mare Turf just minutes before post. She was being well backed at the time but if you saw the warm up, you couldn’t miss how difficult she was for French Jockey Maxime Guyon to control. The filly bumped into the rail and the horse ambulance, sustaining a laceration and hematoma on her hock. We never got to find out if she would actually go into the starting gate. Initially, her connections were very upset with the scratch. But on Saturday evening, I talked to respected French journalist Fanny Salmon who told me that once they saw Announce back at the barn, they realized the scratch was the proper action. Ms. Salmon also told me that Announce was notorious for such behavior in France. She is to stay in this country with Juddmonte’s U.S. trainer Bill Mott. Apparently the reaction of her

French handlers was “good riddance”. The Breeders’ Cup Mile was the farewell race of the event with three notable retirees. The winner Court Vision is off to stand in Canada. Gio Ponte will take his and four Breeders’ Cup appearances$6 million in earnings and enter stud at Castleton Lyons in Lexington. And then there is Goldikova who is to be bred in 2012. Her remarkable run of three straight Mile victories paralleled the Zenyatta phenomenon, and because of that, I don’t think she ever got all the love she deserved. That would have changed had she pulled off her fourth but it wasn’t to be. Truth is, she could easily have been disqualified for causing a chain reaction when she came off the rail to go after the lead. Sunland Park has every reason to be proud of its 2011 alums. Together, Ruler On Ice and Plum Pretty have accounted for over $2.5 million in earnings since they left New Mexico. Sunland Park Oaks winner Plum Pretty took the Ladies’ Classic as far as she could go before dropping to fifth.

Trainer Bob Baffert told me right after the race that he’ll look to run her at 1-1/16 miles as much as possible. Ruler On Ice ran a very credible third in the Classic, especially considering that he finished with just three shoes. Trainer Kelly Breen recognizes that the year-end Eclipse Award picture is suddenly very unsettled and may consider another major engagement for Ruler On Ice to try to strengthen his case for a title. An Eclipse Award would give Sunland something that even Kentucky Derby Winner Mine That Bird couldn’t provide. Is there room in the clubhouse for another statue? It was therefore encouraging to seeU.Sshipper Unusual Suspect carry the hopes of Old Glory that had been sorely missing in the traditional Melbourne Cup Eve Parade down Swanston Street in Melbourne’s Central Business District which boasted the national flags of previously internationally represented runners. The Barry Abrams team can hold its head up high. No, Unusual Suspect did not threaten to win but connections did go home with AU $125,000 for finishing ninth. Victim to a slow early pace, the 8-year-old only began to find stride at the top of the lane and had to weave home from last into the stretch, his momentum significantly stopped on one occasion and badly tightened for room on another. Jockey Brad Rawiller who stepped in for suspended brother, Nash, tried desperately to make up for lost time but got going too late. Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper,

Greg Carpenter was complimentary of the horse’s effort, quick to point out his traffic woes. At neither end was anyone expecting Unusual Suspect to be a worldbeater but the commendable performance opened the door on U.S. participation. Colleague, Overseas Coordinator Lee Jordon described the States as “the last frontier” in the internationalization of the Melbourne Cup. The potential is there for even more serious U.S. contenders in the future but first, there need be a racing center in the States where horses bound for the Cup can quarantine and train for an extended time prior to their departure to Australian shores. Any breakthrough in quarantine regulations would pave the way for horses to be flown down under to capture the Cup with a similar turn-around to their European counterparts. In Australia, Unusual Suspect remained in the barn of Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent and raced three times in the state of Victoria prior to the Melbourne Cup. Oddly enough, the first of his prep races, the Feehan Stakes (1 mile) occurred on Sept. 10, the very same day the courageous runner-up, Red Cadeaux, tackled his final lead-up race, the Group 1 Irish St. Leger (1-3/4miles). His Newmarket trainer, Ed Dunlop, could not really argue that the lengthy break cost him the Cup since the margin of defeat was so miniscule. In post-race interviews, the winning team was all smiles but David Levitt, manager of Pearl Bloodstock Pty that owns Dunaden took a moment to pay special tribute to Australian rider Craig Williams and to losing trainer Ed Dunlop. Williams lost his appeal against a 10-day racing ban handed down on Bendigo Cup Day, Oct. 26, less than 24 hours before the Cup. Williams had piloted Dunaden to his Group 3 Geelong Cup victory and appeared to be riding the crest of a wave with wins either side of it in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on Southern Speed and the Group 1 Tattersalls Cox Plate on Pinker Pinker. “I would just quickly like to say that Craig has been tremendously helpful,

and the ride that he gave the horse at Geelong was outstanding. We’re obviously very sorry that he could not take the ride again, but we tried every channel we could together and although he didn’t see Christophe, he spoke to me regularly, kept us in the picture the whole time. It’s very, very tough for him and tough for the Dunlops as well. It was a tremendous training performance by him. He’s obviously very, very good at it, so I guess you’ll see a bit more of him as well.” Wherever you go, racing is full of dramatic twists and turns. John Velasquez stepped in at the last minute to replace Robby Albarado on this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, and Christophe Lemaire flew half way around the world to gain an 11th hour ride on Dunaden to snatch this year’s Melbourne Cup. “I arrived yesterday afternoon. I was very well welcomed. I could walk the track with the foreign jockeys, with the clerk of the course, so I had a lot of information before I even got on the horse in the big race. You have the excitement of the race, especially a few minutes before in the paddock, but once you are on the horse the pressure goes down, and then you are in the race and at your job, really

concentrated. It is more concentration than pressure.” And concentrate he most certainly did, getting his horse to switch off early, gather momentum a half mile out and work into the clear half way down the stretch. The tension of the photo finish proved more nerve-wracking than the head-to-head battle to the wire with Red Cadeaux. A perfect one-for-one in Australia, Lemaire described his Melbourne Cup triumph as “the second best moment in my career. The first one was the Prix de Diane (2005) — it is like the French Oaks in France — because all my family was there and, I was on a champion horse called Divine Proportions, and today is very special because I’ve heard SureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • November 8, 2011 • Vol. 5 No. 45 9

of the Melbourne Cup before, but you really have to see it to believe it. It’s really something special.” Trainer Mikel Delzangles followed in the footsteps of long-time peer and countryman Alain de Royer Dupre who won the Melbourne Cup last year with Americain. The defending champion lost few admirers in his late-closing fourth, inches behind Anthony Freedman’s Lucas Cranach, who looked a real chance in mid-stretch to become the first German import to win the Cup. Dezangles did confess to some apprehension about taking Dunaden outside of his comfort zone. “We knew he was a good stayer since his win at the beginning of the year in France and I must say it was Sheik Fahad who wanted to send him to Melbourne. Personally, it was so difficult a problem that I was a bit worried. Thanks to the Sheik and Americain last year, they made us look forward to doing it.” Consecutive French victories in the Melbourne Cup feel anything but random coincidences. If the European nations have taken a firm grip on the 2-mile handicap, Americans are only just beginning to get their feet wet. This year’s running time of 3.20.84 on a

turf track rated a GOOD 3 was anything but exceptional. The rapid turn of foot displayed by the top two finishers is what seemed to separate them from the pack, not their speed and clearly neither had any stamina issues. The odds are stacked against American runners for a number of reasons, the same reasons that equally discourage Australian horses from heading to the States, as Greg Carpenter so succinctly put it. “I don’t want to go down the path of level playing fields, but obviously our racing here is totally drug-free, and all our racing is on turf. It does restrict the opportunities that are available, and of course the Breeders Cup, as wonderful a carnival as it is, clashes directly. It is a timing issue as well.” As hard as it is to argue with each of those points, let’s not forget that American stallions have already produced Melbourne Cup winners, such as Americain (2010) by Dynaformer and Kingston Rule (1990) by Secretariat. U.S. racing now needs to take the next big step and find what this year’s winning trainer Delzangles described as “the right horse at the right time.”

With the key racing states of Victoria and New South Wales betting over AU $110M on the Emirates Melbourne Cup alone, you’d be hard pressed to find a country where horseracing is as consistently part of the culture as in Australia — believe me, I haven’t — and certainly never manage to find a “race that stops a nation.” The U.S. warmed to the idea as an active player this year. I’ll be hoping for them to turn up the heat, quite possibly an “unusual heat” in 2012. fourth Graded stakes race of the season and his second Grade 1 event. A graded stakes race represents one of roughly 450 stakes races in the USA deemed to be the most important races by the American Graded Stakes Committee. The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile win is the eighth career win for Caleb’s Posse from 16 lifetime attempts. He has won five races in 2011. The winner’s check of $540,000 moves Caleb’s Posse to $1,153,379 overall. Bred in Kentucky by Don McNeill, Caleb’s Posse is a colt by Posse from the Slewacide mare Abbey’s Missy. The victory in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile is the first in any Breeders’ Cup race for trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

Racinos also pay 20 percent of their “net win” – the amount wagered on slots less payouts and regulatory fees – into their live-racing purses. “There has been little effort to maximize either revenue stream,” McGrail wrote. “In fact Mr. (William) Windham (part-owner of the Downs) acknowledges in the September 25, 2011 edition of the Albuquerque Journal that ‘…the Downs was very poorly managed’ and that ‘we have a third-story casino in a dump.’ These statements should certainly give pause when conAlbuquerque, NM sidering the award of a twenty Horsemen say problems five (25) year lease to the same at the Downs at group that has overseen the deterioration of the existing Albuquerque must be facility.” addressed McGrail says the grandThe Albuquerque Journal stands at the Downs are “antireported that the New Mexico quated and obsolete,” and the Horsemen’s Association – simulcast area lacks common which represents about 5,000 amenities like “box seats with licensed racehorse owners, televisions, quality food and trainers and grooms – say beverage service, modern tote problems at the Downs of Albuquerque are hurting horse board and video screens …” Although racinos can own racing, and that negotiations up to 600 slots – and can lease with any new lessee should another 150 – McGrail said address the problems. horsemen are being short“It is no secret that the horsemen have had a conten- changed because the Downs tious relationship with current has only 317 slot machines. “This has a debilitating effect management,” at the Downs, on the very industry gaming the association’s executive was designed to support,” director, Jack McGrail, wrote McGrail said. in an Oct. 24 letter to interim The horsemen’s associaExpo general manager Dan tion also questions the Downs’ Mourning. plan for a new $20 million The Down has leased the casino at the southern end of property since 1985, but its lease expires Jan. 11, according its 1-mile oval track – well out of view of the finish line and to an audit by the Legislative grandstands. NOV. 3, 2011 Equine Development Coalition of Minnesota formed; selects leaders for 2012 Formerly named Racino Now, the Coalition will advocate on behalf of horse racing and other equine activities In an effort to build Minnesota’s equine industry and accelerate rural economic development, Racino Now has approved a new name and elected new officers to focus its work to support Minnesota’s horse industry. Under its new name, the Equine Development Coalition of Minnesota (EDCoM) will replace Racino Now, advocating on behalf of horse owners and breeders, horse racing fans and the tens of thousands of Minnesotans who depend on a healthy equine industry in this state. Jeff Hilger, a longtime Minnesota business owner, thoroughbred breeder and owner of Bleu Valley Farm in Stillwater, Minn., has been named President of EDCoM. Rosemary Higgins, a quarter horse owner from Princeton, Minn., will serve as Executive Director. Quinn Cheney has been retained as the lobbyist for EDCoM in St. Paul. “The equine industry touches all 87 counties in our state. It will be an enormous economic engine for Minnesota if legislators are willing to make the same investment in horse racing purses and equine development that other states have successfully made,” Hilger explained. In 2004, Dr. Brian Buhr, current Director of the University

of Minnesota’s Department of Applied Economics, estimated that Minnesota’s equine industry created a total economic impact of approximately $1 billion. Additionally, he noted that Minnesota could improve that economic impact with an increase in racing purses. Increasing horse racing purses is important because it helps grow the entire industry – more horses, trainers and breeders come to Minnesota, requiring more support from farmers, veterinarians, fence builders and other businesses. EDCoM supports Racino legislation, which would provide $135 million in new revenue for the State of Minnesota and make significant investments in the equine industry. “Putting the new revenue aside, there is a much bigger picture here.” said Hilger. “If our state is like the 12 other states that have passed racino legislation, it can more than double the dollar value of our equine industry. We are talking jobs here ‐ for farmers, feed suppliers, veterinarians, fence and barn builders and many other businesses. Larger purses will allow Minnesota breeders to be more competitive, attracting trainers, breeders and owners and causing a ripple effect around the state.” Twelve states have approved Racino legislation, and each of those states has experienced an increase in racing purses and equine development because of the legislation. Independent public surveys have shown that support among Minnesotans for Racino legislation exceeds 75 percent. “In the short term, we have a vehicle that allows the Legislature to address a few of the toughest problems facing the state, and in the long‐run increase jobs and help an

agricultural industry that has been hard hit,” Hilger explains. “Simple logic dictates that it is time to move this economic engine forward.” The Equine Development Coalition of Minnesota is a group of dedicated equine industry members who want to improve economic development throughout Minnesota by strengthening the state’s horse industry. EDCoM supports passage of Racino legislation. To learn more about EDCoM, contact Rosemary Higgins at 6129404324. For more information about the Racino proposal, go to www.racinonow.com.

NOV. 1, 2011 Agoura Hills, CA Norma Stone, wife of equine artist Fred Stone, dies Norma Stone, wife of leading American equine artist Fred Stone, died Oct. 22 in Agoura Hills, Calif. A part of her husband’s art business and philanthropy for 35 years, she was 80 and had been in declining health for several years. “She was an amazing woman,” Fred Stone said. “She was the reason I was successful.” Although increasingly frail, she insisted on working each morning to distribute Stone’s prints and books until shortly before her death. He said his wife combined a genuine concern for the many people who spoke or corresponded with her in their Equinart business with a rock-solid adherence to basic principles of fairness. Norma Ruth Paley was born April 6, 1931, in Cleveland and moved to California with her family. She attended the same Los Angeles high school as her future husband, but they did not know each other at the time. Stone said they were introduced after their high-school graduation--”my second date,” he said--and married on Sept. 1, 1951. She attended UCLA for three years but dropped out to go to work to support her husband, who had graduated from The Art Center School in Los Angeles and was seeking to establish himself as a commercial artist. Stone said his future wife’s sense of right and wrong was well honed by the time she attended UCLA. She joined a sorority there but disagreed with the sorority’s decision to not accept a student because she was not physically attractive. “She stayed in that sorority about 15 minutes after that,” he said. Their daughter, Laura, was born in 1954 and a son, Russell, was born in 1956. Both live in the Los Angeles area. Fred Stone left commercial art to work in business for 15 years, and it was Laura who introduced him to the world of the racetrack in the mid-1970s. Within

a few years, he and Norma had founded Equinart, the company that markets his artwork. Norma Stone managed the business side and allowed her husband

to paint in his garage-studio in Agoura Hills. As the business grew, Norma Stone maintained a personal relationship with callers and correspondents. “For 35 years, every letter, every note got answered. She never missed a response,” Fred Stone said. Norma and Fred Stone combined philanthropy with their business. Through the years, their contributions to charities have totaled more than $2-million. Norma Stone also had an eye for the dramatic image. In the Los Angeles Times, she spotted a photograph of an exhausted firefighter and his search dog after the terrorist bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in April 1995. The photo would be the inspiration for “Partners,” which is believed to be the most widely distributed art print of all time. “Partners” has raised more than $500,000 for charity, including the families of firefighters killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City. A memorial service for Norma Stone will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Woodland Hills Country Club in Woodland Hills, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to After the Finish Line or the California Equine Retirement Foundation in her memory.

NOV. 6, 2011 Santa Anita Race Park, Arcadia, CA All Star Heart nets first graded win in Las Palmas to close out Autumn Meet; Bejarano nips Rosario for riding title on final day Gaining her fourth victory in her last five starts, rapidly ascending 4-year-old filly All Star Heart gained her first graded stakes win Sunday with a dominant triumph in Santa Anita’s 42nd running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Las Palmas Stakes for fillies and mares at one mile on turf. Under the direction of jockey Brice Blanc, All Star Heart made a swooping move rounding the far turn to advance from fifth to first by the time the field of five had straightened away in midstretch. The winning margin was two lengths over City to City, with Garrett Gomez aboard, as All Star Heart ran the distance in 1:35.74 over a course labeled “good.” Rain earlier in the day reduced the field size from eight with three late scratches. The Las Palmas climaxed Santa Anita’s 24-day Autumn Meet. Sarah’s Secret finished third, another three-quarters of a length back with Rafael Bejarano aboard three races after he had broken a tie with Joel Rosario for the Autumn Meet’s riding title. When Rosario finished fourth aboard 7-5 favorite Malibu Pier in the Las Palmas, it sealed his competition with Bejarano, who emerged with a 32-31 advantage. “It was a very tough competition, but I’m really happy,” said Bejarano, who

All Star Heart

had missed his first scheduled mount after a flight delay while returning from Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup riding activities in Louisville, Ky. “I had good luck,” he added. If Bejarano encountered travel difficulties returning from Kentucky, Blanc had a smooth journey in the Las Palmas. “I had a beautiful trip,” he said. “I just followed Malibu Pier all the way around, which was pretty much my strategy. “My filly relaxed really nice and did what I wanted her to do at the top of the lane and I was able to outkick her (Malibu Pier). She has a tremendous finish. She’s a big, strong filly who can cover a lot of ground.” Blanc is well familiar with Malibu Pier. He had ridden the Spendthrift Farm filly in her five previous starts. The ride aboard All Star Heart was his eighth straight for Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally. McAnally said he was mildly concerned Sunday when he saw City to City go past All Star Heart nearing the far turn. “’Oh, no,’ I said, “but then I knew we had plenty left when Brice hadn’t even asked her yet.” Added McAnally, “It’s good to get that

graded status on her resume.” As the 5-2 second choice in the wagering, All Star Heart paid $7.20, $3.60 and $2.80. City to City paid $4.20 and $2.80. The show payoff on Sarah’s Secret was $3. Owned and bred by Gerald Gibbs, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, Ontariobred All Star Heart earned $90,000. The winning purse brought her career earnings to $261,705 from a record of 5-1-1 in 15 starts.

SC Chiseled In Stone’s top runners include Stone Heading West, an Oklahoma-bred gelding who won two stakes at Hoosier Park in Indiana in ‘09. The stallion stands at Rancho das Americas International Reproduction Center at Porto Feliz, Sao Paolo, Brazil. Double Chiseled’s dam, Specialy Double, is a 16-yearold daughter of the Special Effort stallion Special Task. The mare has produced four winners from five starters. All told, Double Chiseled has won six of 22 races, and the $33,000 winner’s share of the Lovington Stakes purse increased his earnings to $231,314. The gelding was coming off of a nose victory at odds of 19-1 in the 350yard, $55,360 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (Grade 2) at Zia Park Sept. 17. Celtic Classic finished third, 1 ¼ lengths behind Double Chiseled. Sir Seth, XO Kate, and NCC Grand Slam completed the order of finish. NOV. 5, 2011 Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA Blazin Son takes Town Policy By Ty Wyant

The Vessels Stallion Farms’ Blazin Son outdueled Teller No Lies in the final strides to score a one-half length victory in the Town Policy Handicap at Los Alamitos on Saturday night. The three-year-old Blazin Son raced the 400 yards in :19.887 to show that he could have a promising stakes future for trainer Cody Joiner. Teller No Lies was onehalf length behind Blazin Son and El Kadu was nearly two

lengths back in the five-horse field. The well-bred Blazin Son, sired by First Down Dash and out of champion Blazin Fire, was gelded a year ago and he is improving with age. His dam gained prominence as an older horse and was named the 2007 champion aged mare. Blazin Son is her first foal and her second foal, Illegal Smiles, finished a dead-heat for the win in the Grade 2, $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship a week ago at Los Alamitos. Blazin Son nearly qualified for the Grade 1, $987,350 Los Alamitos Super Derby in his previous start. He won his trial, but his time was just .001 short of the 10th-fastest qualifying mark as the 11thfastest qualifier. “We gelded this horse before the trials to last year’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity,” Joiner said. “He qualified to the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes earlier this year and then we took him to Ruidoso Downs for a couple of races before bringing him back here. “We think he’s going to get better with age just like

his mother did. He’ll be a pretty good 4-year-old next year and I believe he’s paid into the Los Alamitos Winter Championship. That’ll be the next big race that we’ll aim for with this horse.”

mez for owner Everest Stables Inc. and trainer Henry Dominguez, Vamoose made his 8 1/2-furlong trip in 1:43.06, and his margin of victory was a head from 17-10 favorite Imco Spirit (IRE). The $33,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed Vamoose’s earnings to $124,245. Vamoose was bred in Kentucky by Everest Stables Inc., and the 4-year-old gelding is one of 36 stakes winners sired by Petionville, a 19-year-old son of Seeking The Gold who won three stakes in 1995, including the Grade 2, $300,000 Ohio Derby. Petionville has sired the earners of more than

$33.9 million from 523 starters, and the stallion stands for a $7,500 fee at Margaux Farm at Midway, Kentucky. Vamoose’s dam, Minimum Security, is a winning 9-year-old daughter of the Judge Smells stallion Judge TC. The mare has foaled two winners from as many starters. Vamoose has won five of 14 races, and his stakes resume includes a 2 1/4-length victory in the September 5, $50,000 Ruidoso Downs Thoroughbred Championship Handicap. The gelding was coming off of a second-place finish to Quiet Again in the $30,000 Budweiser Special

Santa Anita Race Park, Arcadia, CA Favored John Johny Jak nips 43-1 Assessment by nose in Lure duel It took the length of the stretch for favored John Johny Jak to get past determined 43-1 longshot As-

Lady Of Fifty

sessment, but the 3-2 choice arrived in the shadow of the wire Saturday to take Santa Anita’s $70,150 Lure Stakes by a nose. Under a vigorous ride by Victor Espinoza, John Johny Jak ran the one-mile distance on turf in 1:35.44 to build upon a third-place finish behind Breeders’ Cup Mile competitors Jeranimo and Mr. Commons in the Grade II Oak Tree Mile on Oct. 8. “I thought it was going to be easy at the top of the stretch,” said Espinoza. “I let him open up, but the horse on the inside was game and kept coming back to stay right with me. I had to calculate my timing right at the wire.” Leroy’s Dynameaux finished third, 1 ¼ lengths behind the game runner-up, who had been campaigning in the state of Washington and British Columbia, Canada, before shipping to Santa Anita for the Lure. The winner paid $5, $3.40 and $2.60. Assessment, a 7-year-old gelding ridden by Daniel Vergara, paid $25.20 and $9.20. The show price on Leroy’s Dynameaux, with Alonso Quinonez aboard, was $4.

Assessment took the lead at the outset with John Johny Jak in close pursuit. He cruised through fractions of 23.80, 48.89, 1:12.22 and 1:23.92 before finally being overtaken. A 4-year-old ridgling who raced in Florida where he had been bred, John Johny Jak joined the stable of Kristin Mulhall in July and has blossomed under her care for Kretz Racing. After losing Del Mar’s Wickerr Stakes by a nose, he won the Harry F. Brubaker at Del Mar prior to his solid showing in the Oak Tree Mile. “He ran super,” Mulhall said in the winner’s circle Saturday. “I’m just happy we’re here. It definitely was a battle. He (John Johny Jak) is the kind of horse that, when he gets head and head, at times he’ll pull himself up a little bit.
