By Tom Dawson n Saturday, Dec. 10, we get a peek at Quarter Horse racing’s annual pre-Christmas gift, the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos. The magnitude of the race is such that the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity — as in $2.2 million purse — serves as the Friday night warm up. This will be the 40th Champion of Champions, a distressing fact for those of us who remember the first one. Through the years, only the All American Futurity has had a greater impact on the whole

O

of Quarter Horse racing. But it is the C of C that has been the foreteller of World Champions. I had the pleasure of covering more than half of the 39 renewals for TV, starting with Dash For Cash’s encore performance in 1977. Ten years later came his son, First Down Dash, in an equally impressive performance. There was the period of filly and mare dominance, which ran from 1978 through 1984, when distaffers accounted for five of the seven contests. That group included the fan favorite

Denim N Diamonds in 1981, and World Champion Dashs Dream, who splashed to the wettest C of C victory in my personal recollection in 1984. There was the Refrigerator era from 1992 through 1994. His three consecutive C of C victories are not only a record, they propelled him to his 17-year reign as the sport’s leading money-earner. There was a trainer named Baffert who saddled winners in 1986 and 1988. A short time later, he embarked on another reasonably successful career path.

And speaking of trainers, Blane Schvaneveldt won the race nine times. That’s one more C of C than Jack Brooks has All Americans. I remember a few years in which Blane was so loaded with finalists that Chris Lincoln and I could get most of our preparatory telecast work done at just one barn. The fact that the C of C has succeeded is no accident of fate, but rather a product of design and execution. A few decades ago, the Horsemen’s Quarter Horse Racing Association, of which current track owner Ed Allred was a board member, annually leased the Los Alamitos facility for its winter meeting. In the early 1970s, the HQHRA and Director of Racing Curly Smith conceived the idea of bringing together winners of pre-selected major races from various parts of the country for a year-end championship showdown. The impact was immediate, and lasting. The very first winner, Mr. Jet Moore, was named World Champion, as were 25 others since. On six occasions, the eventual title winner was a starter in the C of C field. That makes 32 of 39. I can’t think of a sport in which those numbers wouldn’t

be dominant. In fact, I have occasionally heard complaints that the C of C has too much impact on the year-end titles. But isn’t that one of the greatest compliments you can get? To have others complain that your event is too dominant? George Steinbrenner would have loved it. He heard that a lot. However, this year there is a viable second-chance drawing for otherwise worthy contenders who suffer defeat in California, or those who didn’t make the West Coast guest list. On Dec. 31, the $350,000 Champion at Sunland Park will be run. With three weeks between the C of C and this New Year’s Eve event, someone might be popping their champagne in the Southwest. Even if the World Championship is all but decided, some of the divisional races may still be in question. Just look back to last year. No way Noconi wins the 2010 Aged Gelding title without his Sunland Championship score. The “other” big race on the weekend of Dec. 9 and 10 is the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Compared to the C of C, it is a late bloomer with its inaugural running coming in 1995. In its 16-year history, the race has bought more than one

pickup truck for the Bassett family. John Bassett has trained four of the winners, starting off with Evening Snow in the inaugural edition. His son Joe accounted for another, and has the second fastest qualifier for 2011, I Like The Odds. It is a historically accurate name for a Bassett trainee in this race. The $2 mil has often served as a breakthrough for late bloomers. Many of those who were prominent in May and June have given way to others who were reserved early or are just finding their best strides. When it comes to championship voting, a major late season victory is not always enough to vault past those with more complete Grade 1 resumes. But the winner’s share of over $900,000 will cure a lot of blues. Papa Clem (4th, 2009); Atomic Rain (16th, 2009) and Looking at Lucky (6th, 2010) are all by Smart Strike. Mr. Prospector is also the grandsire of Flying Private (19th, 2009) through his son Fusaichi Pegasus; and Master of Hounds (5th, 2011) through Kingmambo. Storm Cat edges out Mr. Prospector with six grandsons going postward for the last three Derbies. The 2011 Derby had three grandsons of Storm Cat, all by different sires. In addition to Santiva, Shackleford (by Forestry) and Decisive Moment (by With Distinction) are also grandsons of Storm Cat. Shackledford finished fourth while Decisive Moment was 14th in the Derby won by Animal Kingdom this year. Unbridled is the grandsire of three

Pioneerof the Nile is by Empire Maker while Unbridled’s other two Derby starters, (10th, 2009) and Mission Impazible (9th, 2010). In addition to Bernstein, Giant’s Causeway and Unbridled’s Song, four other stallions have sired two Kentucky Derby starters in the last three years : Birdstone (by Grindstone), Candy Ride (Ride the Rails), Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy), and Kitten’s Joy (El Prado). Of those stallions which have sired more than one Derby starter since 2009, only Birdstone has produced a winner. Birdstone sired 2009 Derby winner Mine That Bird and sixth-place finisher Summer Bird. In addition, four stallions have sired and been the male-line grandsire of Kentucky Derby starters in the last three years. Joining A.P. Indy on that list are Fusaichi Pegasus, Indian Charlie and Awesome Again. Fusaichi Pegasus is the grandsire of HomeboyKris (16th) through Roman Ruler and the sire of Flying Private. Indian Charlie is the sire of 2011

Derby last-place finisher Comma To The Top by way of his son Bwana Charlie and the sire of Conveyance (15th, 2010). Awesome Again’s influence came in the 2010 Derby as the grandsire of eighth-place Stately Victor and the sire of Awesome Act (19th). Watching the star 3-year-olds by young stallions can also help define potential 2012 Kentucky Derby starters. Birdstone, Candy Ride, Chapel Royal, Ghostzapper, Kitten’s Joy, Roman Ruler, War Front, With Distinction and Bernardini have also produced a Derby starter in their first crop in recent years. Scat Daddy (by Johannesburg), Hard Spun (Danzig), Hat Trick-JPN (Sunday Silence), Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr), Corinthian (Pulpit) and Street Sense (Street Cry) are among the leading first-crop sires of 2011 and will likely have contenders on the trail of the 2012 Derby and Triple Crown. There are many different ways to approach picking the winner of the Kentucky Derby. It is a difficult challenge – to say the least – to even determine those that will be at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. Trying to find him or

her in December is almost futile. But there are stallions which have had a significant impact on the Run for the Roses in recent years. And that – at least – can give the handicapper and fans a head start before the New Year. Pedigrees may also prove useful in picking the winners of the many Kentucky Derby prep races run around the country this winter and spring. Regardless, pedigree usually plays an important role in determining who’s in the post parade when they play “My Old Kentucky Home.” Sheridan graduated from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry program in 1982 and began a career of public relations, marketing and television production in horse racing that has spanned 25 years. Jockey

C.J. McMahon

Apprentice on the brink of national prominence

T

By Martha Claussen

here is a new apprentice Thoroughbred rider who has accomplished a great deal in a short, six-month period. While he might have been known to racing fans who follow the Louisiana circuit, young C.J. McMahon is well on his way to becoming a rider with a prosperous future ahead. Charles Jansen McMahon is the son of Quarter Horse rider Charles McMahon. Born in Jasper, Texas, he has been a fixture on the back of a horse since he was a toddler. C.J.’s father, Charles began working horses at 12 and had his jockey license as a teen. He rode some Thoroughbreds, but has been on the Texas-Louisiana Quarter Horse circuit since 1978 and is still an active jockey. According to statistics provided by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Charles McMahon, or his nickname, “Dink,” has ridden in more than 16,216 races with 2,135 wins. C.J. resembles his father in stature and desire, and learned the ropes with Quarter Horses before transitioning to Thoroughbreds. C.J. grew up on the racetrack and, under his father’s tutelage, began galloping horses at farms when he was 8 and breezing them at 10. As a teen, C.J. would go ranch-to-ranch with his dad, working as many as 50 head a day. Charles remembers C.J. always asking to ride the faster horses. Many times they worked in company with Quarter Horse legend Jacky Martin. “We would work horses on either side of him,” Charles said. “Both Jacky and I would tell him to feel what was underneath him and keep a straight path.” C.J. kept up with the two veterans, and his dad knew his son has something very special. “His hands were unbelievable,” stated Charles. “Even as a kid, he had a unique and natural talent.” One thing was undeniable; C.J. wanted to ride and wanted it badly. “That was his dream,” said his father. “He got kicked out of four tracks for working horses when

he was a young teen. Now all the security guards know him and are happy he is doing so well.” Both father and son knew that Thoroughbred racing would be his destiny. C.J. went barn-to-barn asking trainers if he could work their horses. Leading Louisiana conditioner Sam Breaux hired him as a gallop boy. “He told Sam that in just two days, he would show him what he could do,” recalled Charles. In May of this year, the 16-year-old McMahon began riding as an apprentice at Evangeline Downs, followed by a successful stint at Louisiana Downs and then on to Delta Downs. In addition to his parents, C.J. has the support of his godfather, Quarter Horse trainer Kenny Roberts. He has seen C.J. grow from a horse crazy toddler to an accomplished rider. “I remember putting him on a pony at my barn at Sam Houston Race Park when he was 3 and 4 years old,” said Roberts. “He would fall asleep on the back of the horse rather than get down.” On Nov. 19, Roberts was riveted to a television monitor in the grandstand at Evangeline Downs. He would saddle Political Option in the $517,844 LQBHA Breeders’ Futurity in a few hours, but he was completely focused on the $60,000 Orleans Stakes from Delta Downs. Mollys Missb’havin, with C.J. McMahon in the irons surged to the lead and Roberts and his entire group whooped and hollered so

loud that heads turned. “He’s always been a good kid,” said Roberts. “He really loves horses, but more than that, he has a gift. There is a clock in his head, and that, and his natural talent, just sets him apart from other young riders. Plus, he’s always got a smile on his face.”

Trainer Jackie Thacker is a believer McMahon has forged a bond with Mollys Missb’havin, a 3-year-old filly owned and trained by Jackie Thacker. He was aboard the bay lass when she broke her maiden on June 3 at Evangeline Downs. After a brief freshening, she returned to the winner’s circle on Sept. 5 in a 6-furlong non-winner of two and won again, with McMahon in the irons, in a starter allowance at Delta Downs on Oct. 28. Thacker was pleased with the progress of his filly, but McMahon felt she had untapped potential and urged him to enter her in the 6-furlong $60,000 Orleans Stakes, one of the undercard races on Delta Jackpot Day. Mollys Missb’havin had won at 6 and 6-1/2 furlongs, but Thacker was not convinced she could get 7 furlongs. McMahon felt otherwise. “We sat down and talked,” recalled Thacker. “C.J. told me that he felt she had the heart and could handle 7 furlongs. My nickname for him is ‘the bulldog’ and he was very persistent about the stakes attempt.” “The Bulldog” won the battle as well as the Orleans Stakes, sending his filly to the lead and withMollys Missb’havin, C.J. standing a bumping duel with Tapatia and her rider, Gerard Melancon. Dismissed at odds of 9-1, Mollys Missb’havin paid $20.80 for her winning stakes debut. “C.J. is a polite, well mannered young man,” said Thacker. “He’s got the talent, great hands and good head on his shoulders. Most importantly, he listens and does what I ask to the letter.” The lessons from each race, combined with his desire and talent, have paid big dividends. His wins have come at an impressive click; as of Nov. 28, McMahon has won 102 races, with earnings of $1.7 million.

“You could see his talent right away,” Boulet said. “He is extremely patient and makes adjustments very easily. He has already ridden at three different tracks and found success at each one. He has a magical personality, and of course, that big smile.” McMahon’s stature serves him well, as he is just 103 pounds. Boulet notes that Solid debut at Fair Grounds horsemen flock to an apprentice who can weigh in at 110 pounds, with talent to McMahon turned 17 on Nov. 5, and celebrated his birthday and Thanksgiving boot. “He looks great on a horse,” adds Bouin a very special way. With 946 wins on his resume, it is likely he will reach the 1,000th milestone in 2012. “C.J. has had calls from California and Kentucky,” Boulet said. “But, we are hoping that he will follow the same road to the Eclipse Award as Joe Talamo, who rode here as an apprentice five years ago when he was just 16.” Without a hint of ego, McMahon admits that winning an Eclipse Award as the nation’s top apprentice is definitely a goal. “Most importantly, I want to ride to the best of my ability,” he said. “I am happy to be riding at Fair Grounds and competing against some of the best riders in the country.” He is leaning toward moving to Kentucky after the conclusion of the Fair Grounds meet. But for the next several months, he will hone his craft and enjoy the unique culture and history of Fair Grounds. A popular Louisiana phrase is, “Laissez les bon temps rouler,” which loosely translated means “let the good times roll.” For apprentice rider C.J. McMahon, he is fully embracing the slogan as he rises to prominence in the sport he loves. Martha Claussen has been prominent in the Texas racing industry since 1997 as a publicist, writer and handicapper.

at Sunland for more than 10 years, but his relationship with the track dates back decades. Born and raised in El Paso, he started out as a jockey and rode his first Thoroughbred at the track in October 1974. Thirty-seven years later, Dominguez sees Sunland as his window of opportunity for a trip to Churchill Downs. “There’s more than one way to get to the Kentucky Derby, and Sunland is one of those ways,’’ says Dominguez. To that end, Dominguez said, local trainers and their owners are now going to sales and spending a lot more money in search of the next Mine That Bird, another Ruler on Ice. “Whenever we go to sales, some of my clients have it in the back of their minds,’’ says Dominguez. “I don’t train for sheiks or people with bottomless pockets, but we try to find horses that will be able to stretch out (to the Kentucky Derby distance).’’ And there’s a definite contender who fits that profile in Dominguez’s barn at Sunland going into the new season. Isn’t He Clever, a 2-year-old out of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, won his first two races, then ran second last month in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington. Isn’t He Clever is owned by Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso and likely will spend much of the winter at Sunland getting acclimated to the track in hopes he’ll remain sound and eligible to run in the Sunland Derby. Understandably, Payne admits to being a bit of a homer in his preference for who wins the next Sunland Derby. “The best possible scenario for us is if a local guy wins it, like Mine That Bird,’’ said Payne. “Local people now have a place where they can qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Otherwise, they would have to go to Hot Springs or California or somewhere else out of state.’’ Mine That Bird was bred in Kentucky, but was owned by New Mexico horse-

men Dr. Leonard Blach and Mark Allen when he won the Kentucky Derby. Getting a graded race is a tough road for a track like Sunland and moving up can be even more problematic, but there’s a chance the Sunland Derby could be elevated to a Grade 2. “We think we’re in great shape because of the results this year,’’ Payne said. “I don’t know if we’ll get enough points to move up (to a Grade 2). I think we have a chance.’’ “We’ve done a lot of the right things, like getting accredited with the NTRA (National Thoroughbred Racing Association),’’ says Dustin Dix, Sunland’s director of racing operations. “We’ve been progressive with a lot of things that shows them we’re trying to move forward.’’ This, at a time when being in the horseracing business is a risky proposition. With numerous tracks across the country losing money and bettors, Sunland Park remains a beacon of stability and strength. There are plenty of horses on the backside and that should ensure full fields for most Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races. All of Sunland’s 1,700 stalls have been allocated, and there’s a waiting list. This year’s purses will run close to $18 million. There will be seven stakes races on Sunland Derby day (March 25), including the $200,000 Sunland Oaks and the Harry Henson Handicap, Bill Thomas Memorial, La Coneja Stakes, New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks and New Mexico Breeders Derby, all worth $100,000 or more.

The Borderland Derby, a prep for the 1-1/8 mile Sunland Derby, will be run on Feb. 25 with an increased purse of $150,000. Sunland is also home to one of Quarter Horse racing’s bigger events, the Grade 1 Championship, which will run on Dec. 31 and carry a guaranteed purse of $350,000 for the 3-year-olds-and-up field. That’s not to say Sunland has dodged the economic downturn. Off-season simulcasting revenues are down about 13 percent and overall, says Payne. “Money is tight.” “The industry is in such decline that if we can break even handle-wise, it’s a success,’’ said Dix. “We look at the results of other tracks’ handle and everywhere it’s down 10 to 15 percent.’’ Payne feels Sunland also has taken a hit from the ongoing violence just across the border from El Paso in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. While El Paso is considered one of the safest cities in the U.S., the battle among drug cartels in Juarez has virtually wiped out that city’s tourism and created a backlash affect along the border. “People are afraid to come here,’’ Payne said in a recent interview with SureBet. “They ask if it’s safe to come here. We’re pretty much a locals economy right now.’’ But there’s still plenty to like about Sunland, given the abundance of horses on the grounds. With tracks across the country turning off bettors with five- and six-horse fields, Sunland has consistently averaged better than eight horses per

race. Short fields make for short payoffs. “That’s how we’ve built a lot of our success is off those field sizes,’’ Dix said. Sunland’s races are simulcast to more than 800 locations worldwide, including sites in the Caribbean and Europe. Sunland’s decision to run on Tuesdays has proven to be a huge economic plus for the track. With few other tracks running on that day, Sunland’s races viewed via simulcasting have generated an average handle of $1 million or more each Tuesday in recent years. “That’s been part of the lure of Sunland,’’ says Dix. “You’ve got a fast track 99 percent of the time, full fields and big payoffs. I get a lot of feedback from gamblers around the country that really like our signal. On Tuesday, just about anywhere where there is wagering, they’re taking us.’’ The total handle for last year’s Sunland Derby day, live and through simulcasting, totaled a state and track record $3 million. And to think the Sunland Derby almost went out of existence four years ago. Frustrated at not being able to get the race graded, Sunland owner Stan Fulton was close to pulling the plug. “If it hadn’t been graded, we probably would have lost it,’’ Dix said. “Stan asked Harold and I what our backup plan was if we got rid of it. We said we had one, but we really didn’t want to talk about it because we’d put so much heart

and soul into this race, we didn’t want to see it die. He gave us one more year, and that’s when we got graded.’’ That following year (2009), Kelly Leak won the Sunland Derby but it was fourth-place finisher that changed it all. Combined with his earnings in Canada as a 2-year-old, Mine That Bird had enough graded money to make the Kentucky Derby field. He followed his win at Churchill Downs with a runner-up finish in the Preakness and third place at the Belmont. “That was a key race all summer,’’ Dix said of the 2009 Sunland Derby. “They (national media) kept mentioning the Sunland Derby because there were like four or five next out winners from that race.’’ Four of the horses that ran in the 2009 Sunland Derby went on to score wins in graded races. “It put the race on the map for some trainers that weren’t really looking at it before,’’ said Payne. “We get more depth now. (Before), Baffert would bring a horse and some other California guys would bring a horse, but other than that, we weren’t getting anybody from

back east.’’ Says Dix: “Now when we call trainers to nominate for the race, they don’t ask, is it graded, what it is and when is it. They know about it now.’’ So do some of the NFL’s biggest superstars. Sumokin’s win benefits the PDJF When Corner K Quarter Horses’ Sumokin won the Black Gold Futurity at Will Rogers Downs Nov. 12, it wasn’t just owners Cindy and Luke Knox who benefited. Because of the Knoxs’ generosity, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) received 50 percent of the owner’s share of the winning purse, $68,500. “I think it is a very commendable gesture by Cindy and Luke Knox to help disabled riders with a portion of their winnings,” said G.R. Carter, a member of the board of the PDJF. “The PDJF helps these former jockeys that permanently sacrificed their health so we can race horses. I thank Cindy and Luke for their generous gift.” “Luke (Dr. Luke Knox, husband) and I think that everyone in racing should feel indebted to and acknowledge the ultimate risk that all jockeys take,” said Cindy Knox. “I applaud their bravery. Without them, the sport of horse racing could not exist.” Nancy LaSala, president of the board of the PDJF said, “The PDJF’s mission is to provide monthly assistance to former jockeys who have had their lives dramatically altered by accidents on the track. Through the generous support of Dr. and Mrs. Knox, their contribution subsidizes one month of assistance to the community of jockeys we currently serve.” Information on the PDJF is available at www.pdjf.org The Permanently Disabled

Opelousas, LA Dates set for 10th annual John Franks Memorial Two-Year-Old in Training Sale at Evangeline Downs

Auburn, WA Five-time riding champion hopes for return in 2012 Ricky Frazier recently attended school in Kentucky for prospective stewards and racing officials. And yes, Emerald Downs’ five-time leading jockey said he envisions himself in a stewards’ booth in the not too distant future. But according to Frazier, the suit and tie won’t replace the white pants and black boots for a while yet. Frazier, 47, said he attended stewards’ school while awaiting medical clearance to resume his riding career, clearance he expects to get before Emerald Downs begins its 2012 season in April. “I took the course (Nov. 9-16) at the University of Louisville, and it went really well,” Frazier said. “But (being a steward is) for when my riding days are over.” Frazier has ridden 3,490 winners in a 30-year career that includes Emerald Downs’ titles in 2004, ‘06, ‘07, ‘09 and ‘10, and Longacres Mile victories on Flamethrowintexan in 2006 and Noosa Beach in 2010. He missed the entire 2011 meeting, however, and continues to be sidelined by the effects of a fractured skull he suffered in a fall at Fresno, Calif. on Oct. 17, 2010. The after effects included headaches, dizziness and disorientation, and neurologists advised Frazier against riding. Frazier appeared riding fit when visiting Emerald Downs last summer, and said he feels even better now.

“The plan is to be cleared by March 1,” he said, “and then get up to Emerald Downs for the start of the season.”

NOV. 27, 2011 Zia Park, Hobbs, NM Send Me A Candy Tree scores in Southwest Juvenile Championship By Michael Cusortelli

A sharp break from her rail post helped Send Me A Candy Tree win Sunday’s 440-yard, $255,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship Stakes (Grade 1) for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Zia Park. Ridden by Tony Bennett for owner and breeder Carl C. Pevehouse and trainer Clinton Crawford, Send Me A Candy Tree made her quarter-mile trip in :21.336, earning a 96 speed index and defeating Lethal Volt by a nose. The finish was so close that the runnerup also earned a running time of :21.336. Send Me A Candy Tree was bred in Oklahoma. The filly’s sire, Oak Tree Special, was American Quarter Horse racing’s world champion in 2003, and his top runners include Cold Cash 123, an earner of $661,446 this season and recent winner of the $372,544 Texas Classic Derby (Grade 1) at Lone Star Park, and Furrtreeous, the winner of the 2007 Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity (RG2) at Fair Meadows at Tulsa. Oak Tree Special is owned by Raul Rubalcava, and he stands for a $5,000 fee at Jude and Regina Robicheaux’s Robicheaux Ranch at Breaux Bridge, La. Send Me A Candy Tree’s dam, Send Me The Candy, is a 17-year-old daughter of Leaving Memories who won the 1996 Remington Park Futurity (Grade 1). The mare has produced 12 winners from 13 starters, including This Candys Special, a half sister to

Send Me A Candy Tree who won three Grade 3 stakes at Prairie Meadows in Iowa from 2003-04. Send Me A Candy Tree was coming off of a 1 1/2-length victory as the 2-1 favorite in the 400-yard, $93,968 Texas Classic Futurity Consolation Stakes at Lone Star Park Nov. 12. The filly has won five of her seven starts, and the $115,200 winner’s share of the Southwest Juvenile Championship purse pushed her bankroll to $259,078. VGC Moon Walk finished third, 1 ½ lengths behind Lethal Volt. Denver Pass, Cypress City, Find Me A Hero, Lalia, Folly Del Rey, Back In The Pack, Zoomin Hearts and Pink Cartel completed the order of finish. A bay gelding campaigned by Dan Adams, Gene White, and breeder P.K. Thomas, Lethal Volt earned $40,800 to increase his bankroll to $174,900 from seven outs. Lethal Volt was coming off of a victory in a Sept. 24 Dash For Cash Futurity (Grade 1) at Lone Star Park. VGC Moon Walk has earned $73,896 from seven races for his owner, Valle Gua-

diana Corporation. The sorrel colt by Walk Thru Fire ran second, a half of a length behind winner Feature Mr Bojangles, in the $259,943 Hobbs America Futurity (Grade 2) at Zia Park Oct. 9.

Wright and trainer Mike Pender struck again in the $250,000 Hollywood Derby Sunday at Hollywood Park. Ultimate Eagle, a 14-1 outsider, completed the 2011 Turf Festival with a gate-towire victory under jockey Martin Pedroza. The win was the fourth in a row – all since he was switched to grass - for the 3-year-old Mizzen Mast colt out of the Captain Bodgit mare Letithappencaptain and came six weeks after he had wired the field at 34-1 in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita.

Ultimate Eagle

Providing Pedroza with his first Grade 1 victory since he won the 2010 Triple Bend with E Z’s Gentleman during the Spring/Summer meet at Hollywood Park, Ultimate Eagle was hustled out of the gate to gain the advantage, then relaxed through moderate splits (24.67, 49.07 and 1:14.12 for 6 furlongs) with New York invader Imagining in close pursuit. The pair separated themselves from the rest of the field entering the stretch and continued to battle with Ultimate Eagle eventually prevailing by three-quarters of a length. The final time for the 1 ¼ miles was 2:01.43. Pushing his earnings to $329,800 in six starts, Ultimate Eagle paid $31.40, $13 and $7.60. Imagining, a 13-1 shot making his first appearance in a graded race for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, returned $14.60 and $10.80. He wound up a half-length in front of Western Aristocrat, another colt who had made his most recent start in New York- winning the Grade 1 Jamaica Handicap Oct. 8 at Belmont Park – ran on for third under jockey Corey

Stoney Fleece

Nakatani. The show payoff on Western Aristocrat, who was 9-1, was $8.20. No better than third in three races over Cushion Track to begin his career, Ultimate Eagle, a $70,000 2-year-old purchase, has blossomed with the surface switch. His victories have come on three different courses. Before his wins at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, the dark bay had earned his maiden victory July 31 at Del Mar. “It’s miraculous considering where this horse came from,’’ said Pender after earning his first Grade 1. “He had colic as a 2-year-old and was basically pronounced dead on the table. “Somehow, by an act of God, he was brought back to life. He prefers the lead, but he doesn’t have to have it. I was hoping he would assert himself and get to the lead by himself, but (Imagining) was pressing him every step of the way from the half-mile pole home. He just refused to let up. “Ultimately I would like to get him back on dirt. He trains so much better on dirt. He really hasn’t handled synthetic surfaces all that well. We’ll

take it a day at a time from here.’’ Slumber was a neck behind Western Aristocrat in fourth, then came Venomous, Casino Host, Cozy Kitten, Willcox Inn, the lukewarm 3-1 favorite, Irish Art, Surrey Star and Cloud Man, who went wrong around the final turn. The 3-year-old Thunder Gulch colt suffered pastern and cannon bone fractures to his left front leg. Surrey Star, who was virtually eased in the final quarter of a mile, was vanned off with discomfort in his right front leg. Pedroza, who has been riding since 1981, had high praise for the winner. “This is undoubtedly the best horse I’ve ever ridden,’’ he said. “I thought Martial Law (the upset winner of the 1989 Santa Anita Handicap) was, but this horse is better. He’s a younger version. This is just a beautiful horse to ride. People think he has to be on the lead, but he doesn’t. “I wanted to be on the lead, but it wasn’t necessary. When he gets to the front he relaxes immediately. I was pretty confident and he came through like I thought he would.’’

Earlier in the day, Gary Barber became the first owner to win the $100,000 Generous Stakes for a second time when Stoney Fleece posted an 8-1 upset in the Grade 3. Barber, who owned 2010 winner Comma to the Top in partnership with Roger Birnbaum and Kevin Tsujihara, owns Stoney Fleece in partnership with his brother Cecil. Trainer John Sadler claimed the 2-year-old son of Decarchy for $40,000 for the pair out of a debut maiden victory, in which he overcame much adversity, July 28 at Del Mar. The California bred has gone 3-for-5 since the purchase and picked up his most significant win Sunday. Taking advantage of a very quick and contested pace, Stoney Fleece overtook 5-2 second choice Handsome Mike, who disposed of his early pace rivals to get clear in the stretch, in the final sixteenth of a mile. The 1 ¼ length win enabled him to remain perfect on grass. Out of the Deputed Testamony mare Gold Fleece, Stoney Fleece had won an allowance Oct. 15 at Santa Anita in his first turf appearance. Providing leading jockey Joel Rosario with a meethigh third stakes win, Stoney Fleece paid $19.60, $6 and $3.20. Handsome Mike returned $4.40 and $2.80. Battle Force, the even-money favorite, paid $2.60 to show. He finished a half-length behind Handsome Mike. “His mother was very good on grass, so I have some familiarity with the family,’’ said Sadler, who became the fifth trainer to win the Generous twice, joining Jerry Fanning, Ron McAnally, Todd Pletcher and Mel Stute. Sadler’s other victory came in a division in 2006 with Warning Zone. “I really claimed him for grass and he’s two-for-two on turf. He’s a nice, hard knocking horse. He’s never run a bad race. I wasn’t surprised he was in for a tag because he’s so small. I’d like to keep him on turf, but I won’t rule out some of the California bred stakes coming up.’’

Ridden by last season’s Fair Grounds riding champion Rosie Napravnik, who was scoring her fourth victory of the day, Suntracer was unhurried until the stretch run, swung to the outside of the field for the drive and drew off with authority. “Honestly, all I had to do was sit and wait (for the stretch run),” said Napravnik in the winner’s circle following the running of the Woodchopper. “He did it all for me in the stretch. Gantry

Post time is 12:30 p.m for the beginning of the three-day Turf Festival. The first of two Grade 1 Festival events over the holiday weekend is the $250,000 Matriarch. Scheduled for one mile, the Matriarch attracted a quality field of fillies and mares, including defending champion Gypsy’s Warning, Summer Soiree and Never Retreat. The 10 race program Friday also includes the Grade 3 Miesque for 2-year-old fillies. Like the Matriarch, the Miesque is one mile.

Fairgrounds, New Orleans, LA Gantry wins Fair Grounds’ Thanksgiving ‘Cap; ‘Populist’ popular winner of Mr. Sulu It was a winning day for local horse people on Opening Day of the 140th Thoroughbred Racing Season at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, including a score in the featured event when Brittlyn Stable’s Gantry captured the 86th running of the $75,000 Thanksgiving Handicap by a nose at the historic New Orleans oval. Trainer Ron Faucheux

Populist Politics

Jr.,who was winning the first stakes race of his blossoming career in his third season at Fair Grounds, was born and raised in the Crescent City, where his father ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New Orleans in 1982. Louisiana native owner Evelyn Benoit, who was seeing her silks in the winner’s circle for the third time during the Thanksgiving Day program, is the mother of noted guitarist Tab Benoit, for whom her perennial Louisiana-bred champion Star Guitar is named. Gantry, always well placed, could not put his nose in front until the last jump, but the win was not too much of a surprise to his 29-year-old conditioner. “I’m not surprised (Gantry) ran as well as he did,” said Faucheux, “but with the speed holding up as well as it did today, I was a little surprised he was able to get there.” Gantry, who was ridden by Richard Eramia, a native of Uruguay who was leading rider at the recently completed Louisiana Downs session and who escaped serious injury in a spill earlier in the afternoon, also expected Gantry to run well. “I worked him last week and he worked very good for

me,” Eramia said. Gantry, who paid $12.20, $6.60 and $3.40, accomplished the 6 furlongs in 1:09.62, and increased his career earnings to $159,850 with his fourth win in nine career starts. Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Cash Refund, who gained the advantage in the lane, could not withstand the winner at the wire but was easily second best, finishing 4 1/4-lengths to the good of Whispering Oaks Farm’s Joe Hollywood, who made the pace with splits of 21.92 and 56.78. Native New Orleanian Al Stall Jr., a multiple training champion at Fair Grounds in past seasons, was the training star of the day, saddling four winners in a row on the 10-race program. Stall began his run with Brittlyn Stable’s Beanwah’smachine in the third, came right back in the fourth with Columbine Stable’s Cornicelli, took the fifth with Joe Agular’s Sharp Tongue Lady and capped off his quartet with Brittlyn Stable’s Sunday’s Child in the seventh. One race prior to the Thanksgiving Handicap, Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence’s Populist Politics

won the fourth running of the $60,000 Mr. Sulu Stakes as the undercard highlight of Fair Grounds’ Opening Day program. Trained by Tom Amoss – another native New Orleanian – and ridden by James Graham, Populist Politics paid a $4.80 straight price as the choice of the fans based on his third-place finish in Louisiana Downs Grade II Super Derby at last asking, as well as his victory in Fair Grounds’ $100,000 Louisiana Futurity last year.

She would have to be supplemented to the Grade 1 – which is run at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track – for $10,000, plus an additional $10,000 to start. “There really weren’t any (allowance races), so you either have to run in a stakes or ship somewhere else,’’ said Kasparoff. “This seemed like an ideal spot. She really likes Hollywood Park quite a bit, she trains very, very well here. “I wanted to run her 7 furlongs. I thought it would be an excellent distance for her and the timing was perfect. She got an excellent trip and ran fantastic.
