We have the best friends in the world; they decorated our table in the Turf Club and celebrated with us in the winner’s circle. We cannot say enough good things about Ruidoso Downs and Shaun Hubbard. Their commitment to security was done with the utmost integrity.”
Racing Free
The McKinneys firmly believe that performance-enhancing drug use in United States horse racing should not be tolerated. Micah and Leslie formed an alliance called Racing Free and have enlisted a growing number of members who choose to race clean and support a healthy and safe racing environment. They have aligned with racetracks across the country to promote the Racing Free Incentive Program that they hope will level the playing field for competition in racing and help rebuild the negative reputation that has plagued the industry. The initial intent of the program was Quarter Horse racing, but Racing Free is gaining momentum in Thoroughbred racing, as well. “To see Thoroughbred connections join Racing Free and see the transfer across breed lines is great,” said Leslie. “Our members are so

Leslie and their son, Drake, 6 and daughter, Fisher, 3, have moved to Edmond, Okla. “We never looked at this as a quick transaction and something we would flip in two or three years,” explained Gary. “This is a long-term investment in a property we love. Our grandchildren will grow up there and I would be pleased if they continue the family interest in racing and ranching.” But now it is a full-blown plan enthusiastically shared by the entire family as well as their primary trainer, Eddie Willis. “We are all so excited to welcome the McKinneys to Oklahoma,” said Debbie Schauf, executive director of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association. “Micah was elected to the OQHRA board of directors for a threeyear term beginning January of 2014, and with the family’s purchase of Lazy E Ranch, they are really stepping right up and accepting an active role in the future of the horse industry in Oklahoma. I am really happy to see Micah and Leslie becoming more involved with their enthusiasm and fresh ideas as we all work to keep the Oklahoma horse industry in the limelight.” The timing could not be better as a new economic impact study was released, citing the growth of the horse industry from $1.2 billion in 2005 to just over $3.6 billion annually in 2012.
Early Christmas tidings Dec. 14
The McKinneys will head to Cypress, California on Saturday, Dec. 14, to watch Feature Hero compete in the $750,000 Champion of Champions (Grade 1). Early rumblings on social media have Ochoa and Matabari as their front-runners for the title in the prestigious race, but the victory by the All American Derby title holder would undoubtedly clinch AQHA Champion honors for the McKinneys. But even without hoisting that trophy, Gary, Micah and Leslie can celebrate Christmas with a great deal of pride on their accomplishments in 2013. With their unwavering family bond and commitment to excellence, it’s safe to say that this may just be the beginning!

Jumonville honored as 50-year breeder
J.E. Jumonville Jr. of Ventress, Louisiana, was honored by the American Quarter Horses Association as a 50-Year Breeder at a ceremony held on Oct. 29 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. Each year, AQHA honors breeders who have dedicated their livelihoods to maintaining the integrity of the American Quarter Horse. These horsemen and families see their biggest accomplishments and proudest moments in the horses they breed. This year, 13 honorees received the cumulative award and 12 received the legacy award. Cumulative breeders are those who have registered at least one foal for 50 years cumulatively. Honorees ranged from people who have bred American Quarter Horses for reining, racing, ranch rodeo and cutting. Recipients were also geographically dispersed, hailing from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas and Canada. All have dedicated 50 years to taking their best and making it better. “It’s our honor to recognize the effort and time these breeders have spent in pushing the development of the American Quarter Horse,” said Don Treadway Jr., AQHA executive vice president.
J.E. Jumonville 50-year cumulative breeder
Jumonville grew up in Louisiana’s ranch country, where high-quality ranch and cutting horses were an integral part of his youth. Retired as a farmer and rancher, and from the oil, gas and insurance industries, J.E. also spent 16 years as a Louisiana state senator, where he was instrumental in advancing the interests of the state’s booming horse industry. He and wife Bunny live on their ranch at Ventress, Louisiana, where they raised sons J.E. “Tres” III, Dutch and Clayton. John Enoul Jumonville Jr. began breeding American Quarter Horses in his family’s name in 1955 and the following year began showing cutting horses in AQHA and National Cutting Horse Association competition, an activity in which he still occasionally participates. In 1968, J.E. acquired his first racehorse, Turner’s Super. The stallion then won five consecutive races and had a profound influence on the horseman.
It’s a family operation
Through July 2013, J.E. in his own name, in the name of Jumonville Farms and also with his sons, had bred 202 winners from 331 starters, who together have earned more than $8.49 million. Among the 27 stakes winners bred by the Jumonvilles are champion Jess Louisiana Blue; multiple Grade 1 winners Sompinlikaglass, Magic Dozen, A Stoli Mate and Feature Mr Jess, who has sired the earners of more than $22 million; and graded stakes winners Sizzlin Cartel, Brace Your Glass, Leading Effort and Brace It. In years past, J.E. and his family had owned more than 200 horses at a time. Now they keep 15-20 broodmares and do some embryo transfers, reducing quantity while raising quality. J.E. cites many peak moments in his career, from winning major events on the track to owning and riding Dry Dot to win the non-pro cutting and place third in the open at the 1982 NCHA Super Stakes. “I have said for many years that a horse with quick feet, solid conformation and a good mind can do a lot of good things,” J.E. says. “However, my ideal horse is one that excels at his or her job, whatever it may be. “We have been blessed by God with our program over all these years,” J.E. says. “We have had many pleasurable moments, as well as heart-breaking ones – as all breeders know.” J.E. credits a couple of major influences for keeping him in the game. “My wife, Bunny, and the love for what we do,” he says. “Bunny is a major part of everything we do. Through good times and not-so-good times, we love what we do. We could not run the farm without the day-to-day help from our son Dutch.” “Breeding for that one great horse is a life’s work.” J.E. concludes. “It takes a team to be successful, and I want to thank all those that helped us. They are too many to name, but they know who they are, and for them we are grateful!”

3) to be run on Sunday, March 23, 2014. The 12th running of the Kentucky Derby prep race will be the culmination of a stakes filled card worth over $1.5 million. Last year’s 1 and 1/8 mile classic was won by Govenor Charlie for trainer Bob Baffert and owner Mike Pegram. Martin Garcia piloted the winner in track record time. The $800,000 Sunland Derby (Grade 3) remains an integral part of the point system for entry into the 2014 Kentucky Derby. The winner of Sunland Park’s biggest race will receive 50 qualifying points. The runner-up earns 20 points, followed by 10 for third and 5 points for fourth. 50 points will be
extremely valuable for a Kentucky Derby candidate. The $120,000 Mine That Bird Derby on Saturday, Feb. 22 is the chief local prep for the $800,000 Sunland Derby (Grade 3). Sunland Park Director of Racing Dustin Dix said, “We continue to strive for the very best in Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Our excitement and attitude for the 55th live racing season is reaching a fever pitch. Last year’s Sunland Derby (Grade 3) day was a record breaker for the second straight year. The upcoming meet looks very promising with great horses running for big purses. We are also thrilled about the Sunland Derby
(Grade 3) and the Sunland Park Oaks being important parts of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks qualifying point system.” The lucrative Sunland Derby (Grade 3) day program also includes the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks, The $85,000 La Coneja Stakes, the $75,000-added Harry Henson Handicap, the $85,000 guaranteed New Mexico Breeders’ Derby, the $85,000 guaranteed New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks and the $75,000 guaranteed Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes for open horses racing six and one-half furlongs. The 2014 Sunland Park Oaks winner receives 50 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

Oklahoma horse industry impact study released
The Oklahoma Equine Alliance released a comprehensive study today showing the economic impact generated by the Oklahoma Equine Industry reached $3.6 billion in 2012, yielding roughly 35,070 full time equivalent jobs. The study was completed in 2013 and commissioned by members of the Oklahoma Equine Alliance. Members of the Oklahoma Equine Alliance include the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs,
Fair Meadows, Oklahoma Horse Council, Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry. These members as well as state legislators and top executives from breed organizations and private entities gathered today to recognize Oklahoma’s thriving equine industry. The study provides thorough economic data and highlights the cooperative efforts of private and public partnerships that have driven the growth of Oklahoma’s equine business. Oklahoma is known worldwide for its top caliber horses as well as its top tier facilities. Oklahoma is recognized as the “horse show capital” of the world, is home to over a thousand rodeo events and hosts the top race meets for Quarter Horses in the United States. The Oklahoma State Fair Park and Tulsa Expo Square have completed improvements to their facilities totaling over $250 million since 2005. The world class facilities are a significant component in the ability to host national and international equine events year round. “There is no doubt that the equine industry is a significant economic driver within our Oklahoma economy”, said Secretary of Agriculture, Jim Reese. “With a total impact of $3.6 billion and generation of over $100 million in state and local taxes it is evident that the equine industry is important to all areas of our state. We want to continue to support our equine events and participants as they create opportunity here in Oklahoma.”

Skeet Ulrich stars in horse racing film ‘50 to 1’ about Mine That Bird
Mine That Bird, the underdog racehorse that won the 2009 Kentucky Derby, is the focus of a new Hollywood film “50 to 1” that opens in theaters March 21, 2014. The news was announced by “50 to 1” director, producer, co-writer and racehorse owner Jim Wilson
(Oscar-winning producer of “Dances with Wolves”). Skeet Ulrich (Jericho, “Scream,” “As Good As It Gets”), Christian Kane (Leverage), William Devane (24, “The Dark Knight Rises”), Todd Lowe (True Blood, Gilmore Girls) and newcomer Madelyn Deutch star in the film alongside real-life jockey Calvin Borel, who plays himself in the picture. Faith Conroy co-wrote the script with Wilson. The film, which is rooted in New Mexico and shot in over 30 locations throughout the state – from Santa Fe to Las Cruces – will kick off the theatrical release with the world premiere in Albuquerque at the historic KiMo Theatre on March 19. “50 to 1” is about a misfit group of New Mexico cowboys who find themselves on the journey of a lifetime when their crooked-footed racehorse qualifies for the Kentucky Derby. The cowboys face a series of mishaps on their way to Churchill Downs, becoming the ultimate underdogs in a final showdown with the world’s racing elite. “I had been waiting for a great racehorse story for a very long time,” Wilson said, noting he had read numerous horse racing scripts over the years, “but when I watched what unfolded at the 2009 Kentucky Derby, I was stunned. I’ve always been a fan of true underdog stories and after meeting the owners, trainer and finally Bird himself, I was hooked. This story had all the cinematic elements you could ask for. It’s been a real adventure and one I am proud to share with the world.” Wilson won the Academy Award for Best Picture for “Dances with Wolves,” which he produced. He also produced “The Bodyguard,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Swing Vote,” “Mr Brooks” and “Message in a Bottle.” Wilson’s previous directing credits include “Head Above Water,” “Whirlygirl,” and the criticallyacclaimed documentary about renowned jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., “Laffit: All about Winning.” Find more information at www.50to1themovie.com. with the track recording substantial increases in attendance and handle. Racing from Aug. 2 - Oct. 30, The Downs at Albuquerque drew a total of 82,086 fans, compared to 64,523 during its 54-day meet in 2012. Total attendance was up 27 percent over last year, while the average daily attendance of 1,466 marked a 23-percent increase over the 2012 average of 1,195. Money wagered on and off track on The Downs’ live races reached $7,420,076, an 11-percent increase over the $6,689,178 handle recorded in 2012. The track’s average daily handle, $132,501, was 7 percent better than last year’s average of $123,874. And, proving how popular The Downs at Albuquerque’s product was to simulcast players outside New Mexico, the track’s interstate off-track handle of $4,407,644 was 19 percent better than last year’s $3,714,546. The only handle decrease the track recorded was in its intrastate off-track handle – that is, money wagered on The Downs’ live racing at New Mexico tracks – which reached $393,133, down 23 percent from the 2012 intrastate handle of $513,410. Downs’ director of racing operations Don Cook attributed the increase in attendance to the track’s new 65,000-square foot casino, which opened in July. “The new casino brought more people to our facility, and even though the casino is in a separate building than the racing grandstand, I think a lot of people -- many of whom had maybe never seen a live horserace -- said, ‘Hey, there’s something going on over at the grandstand. Let’s go check it out,’” Cook said. “We spent a lot of money building the new casino, and when you do that you need a good marketing plan. Our marketing team did an excellent job of getting the word out. “But our large increase in offtrack handle was also encouraging, because the people who played our races away from the track had no idea we had a new casino,” he added. “They weren’t attracted by the casino. They were attracted by the quality of our racing.” The Downs paid horsemen a to-
tal of $4,773,338 in purse money, up 2 percent over last year’s $4,680,500. Average daily purses reached $85,238, down 2 percent from the 2012 average of $86,676. Cook said he expects The Downs’ new casino to generate enough revenue between now and next August that purses will double to approximately $160,000 per day in 2014. Also, the track is planning to install lights so that night racing can take place. “I think racing at night will enable us to increase our off-track handle even more, because we’ll be able to race at a time when not a lot of other tracks are running,” Cook said. “My biggest concern about racing at night is making sure we have reliable backup systems. The last time we had night racing in New Mexico was at Sunland Park, and that came to an end when the lights inadvertently went out in the middle of a race. “We’re looking seriously at the safety issue and making sure everything is done correctly,” he added. “It’s going to take time to make sure we double and triple check everything. Running at night is a nice idea, but we positively don’t want any issues. We want reliable backup systems if we have any problems.” The Downs’ richest Quarter Horse race, the 400-yard, $76,452 New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings on Sept. 21, was won by Downwiththequickness, a homebred gelding by Be Real Quick owned and trained by Terry G. Smith. Diana Bringhurst’s Poblano, a gelded son of Minister Eric, won the meet’s richest Thoroughbred race, the 6-furlong, $53,753 George Maloof Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred colts and geldings on Sept. 22. “Our increases this year were encouraging, especially considering that most racetracks in the country are down,” Cook said. “Our average field size during the month of October was nine per race, and the credit for that goes to our racing secretary, Jim Collins, and our race office.” The Downs at Albuquerque’s 2014 meet will run 54 days, from Aug. 2 - Oct. 26.

NOV. 24, 2013 Los Alamitos, Cypress, CA Wood saddles top-three Two Million qualifiers
Trainer Trey Wood is primed for his first win in the Grade 1, $1,989,525 Los Alamitos Two Million after saddling the top-three qualifiers Viva Mi Corazon, Ms First Prize Rose and Dash Through Fire – from 111 trial entrants on Sunday night at Los Alamitos. Wood’s success in the trials follows him nearly qualifying champion Hez Our Secret to the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion of Champions on Saturday night. The colt finished second in the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors’ Trial behind Significant Heart, who earned the Champion of Champions invitation. If any horse drops out of the Champion of Champions, then Hez Our Secret earns a berth in the 440-yard classic. Viva Mi Corazon and Ms First Prize Rose are owned by the partnership of Johnny Trotter and Burnett Ranches while Dash Through Fire is owned by Trotter. Trotter and Burnett Ranches won the 2007 Los Alamitos Two Million with One Famous Eagle. Leading the assault on the Two Million from the Wood barn was PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity winner Viva Mi Corazon winner of the seventh of 14 trials with the fastest-qualifying time of :19.512. The gelding by First Down Dash and out of a half-sister to co-world champion Streakin Sin Tacha got a quick start under jockey Cody Jensen and pulled away for the easy one-and-one-halflength win. “He ran two big races in the PCQHRA Breeders’ series,” Jensen said. “He ran great in the trials, but then he ran better in the final than in the trials and he ran better tonight than he did in the PCQHRA Breeders’ final. He ran better, bigger and stronger. He is doing everything better each time.” Viva Mi Corazon has stepped up his game at Los Alamitos with three wins from three starts after racing at Ruidoso Downs this summer. His best effort at Ruidoso Downs was a win in his Ruidoso Futurity trial. Upon arriving at Los Alamitos he took his PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity trial by three quarters of a length in his local debut. He came back in the finals to overcome being bumped on both sides and going on to win by three quarters of a length as the 2-1 favorite. Ms First Prize Rose won her trial in her first start since taking the Grade 1, $1 million Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in July. The Corona Cartel filly out of Heritage Place Futurity winner First Carolina raced to the lead from the outside post position. She lengthened her stride to win by three quarters of a length with the second-fastest time of :19.548 under jockey Ricky Ramirez, who called her a filly who “never makes mistakes.”
Ms First Prize Rose pushed her winning streak to four-straight races with the Two Million trial win. At Ruidoso Downs, she won her three starts, capped by her game nose win in the Rainbow Futurity. “She’s one of my favorites,” Wood added. “I couldn’t believe how well she finished tonight because she had been off since July. She just has lots and lots of class.” Dash Through Fire boasts a tremendous upside after winning her trial by one-and-one-half lengths in just her second career start. The Walk Thru Fire filly showed her inexperience when she tried to lug out for the majority of the race and jockey Ramirez used right-handed urging to keep her in line. She was, simply, faster than each of her rivals and recorded the third-fastest qualifying time of :19.607. Making her first start at Los Alamitos on October 13, Dash Through Fire won her maiden by one-and-one-quarter lengths. “We added her to our barn right after we got here,” Wood added. “We didn’t know much about her. She’s still a little green and just like tonight, she got in front and then started running all over the place. “She’s a big filly. She looks more like a big old gelding. She had some tendon problems earlier in the year so they backed off from her. We got lucky (to add her to the barn). She’s getting better and better each day.” San Gregorio Racing Stables’ Ed Burke Million winner Five Bar Cartel made the Los Alamitos Two Million field with a one-half length win in the fifth trial. The Danny Montes-trained Five Bar Cartel quickly raced from the gate and held Bp Its My Policy safe by one-half length. It was the Corona Cartel son’s fifth win from six starts with his only defeat a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Golden State Million as the 7-10 favorite. Five Bar Cartel was timed in the sixth-fastest time :19.761 under Saul Ramirez. “He ran his race and he did what he was supposed to do,” said Jorge Carmona of San Gregorio Racing Stables. “He ran confidently and did his job. He’s very professional and I’m happy that he has qualified. The Two Million final will be an important race because he’s a colt and because of the race for a championship title. “The final will be extremely tough with horses like Viva Mi Corazon, who is a big, good looking horse with a lot of potential. Five Bar Cartel will need to be at his very best and hopefully luck will be with us.” The finals for the 400-yard year-ending futurity at Los Alamitos will be held on December 15. The complete list of qualifiers is Viva Mi Corazon (:19.512), Ms First Prize Rose (:19.548), Dash Through Fire (:19.607), Sis Is Hot (:19.701), Foose Cash Sr (:19.745), Five Bar Cartel (:19.745), Chalalita (:19.791), A Corona Sunset (:19.791), Collin The Shots (:19.796) and Highest Fire (:19.799). NOV. 16, 2013 Evangeline Downs, Opelousas, LA Ol Time Preacher Man wins $1 million LQHBA Breeders Futurity Ol Time Preacher Man ($15.40) edged past First Prize Jet in the finals strides to win the $1 million LQHBA Breeders Futurity for Louisiana bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Evangeline Downs Racetrack. Taking advantage of a perfect tracking trip under jockey Danny Lavergne, the gelded son of Heza Fast Dash recorded the narrowest victory in the richest race of the year at Evangeline Downs. The official winning margin was a nose and the running time for the 400 yards on a track labeled fast was 19.711 seconds. Winning rider Lavergne stated “I was pretty confident that I had won, but you never know and when they didn’t hang the numbers on the tote board right away I started to get worried.” He added “Everything worked out just right, he broke well and was in contention throughout, when I asked him for his best in mid-stretch he responded and we were able to win the head bob.” For Lavergne, a Lake Charles native who has captured several leading rider titles at tracks in both Louisiana and Texas during his more than three decades in the saddle; it was his first ever win in a Million-Dollar Race.

Ol Time Preacher Man earned $445,000 for the win, his 2nd in six career starts for owner Robert S Holland’s T M Ranch. The victory was the 7th win in this race for his trainer Kenny Roberts, who is the all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer here at Evangeline Downs. Also at Evangeline Downs on Saturday evening, Trainer Heath Taylor recorded a onetwo finish in the $50,000 EVD Derby for threeyear-olds with First Prize Shaunda ($15.60) & Ronnie James. NOV. 9, 2013 Los Alamitos, Cypress, CA Vodka On Ice leads intermountain invasion in Challenge Championships
Gerado Prado’s Vodka With Ice, a 17-1 longshot, held off a furious charge from favored world champion Cold Cash 123 to win the Grade 1, $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship and lead a successful invasion of horses who traveled down I-5 for the Bank of America Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos. The Bank of America Challenge Championship are the ultimate event in the Bank of Amer-
ica Racing Challenge program, bring together horses who excelled in regional races throughout North America. Horses who raced at Les Bois Park this summer, led by Vodka With Ice, won three of the five graded stakes on the stakes-filled 10-race card. Young trainer Ryan Hanson had a breakout evening when he won two of the five stakes for his first two stakes wins. He took the Grade 1, $100,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship with Honoroso and then won the Grade 2, $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship with Jr Dynasty Mountain. Vodka With Ice earned an invitation to the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion Of Champions with the diminishing neck win over Cold Cash 123. Valiant Valor was another three quarters of a length back in third place in the field of 11 older runners. Vodka With Ice, with Francisco Rubio aboard for his third win on the card, quickly started from the fourth post position and was the horse to beat within the first 100 yards of the 440-yard contest. It was just a matter of when Cold Cash 123 would unleash his tremendous closing charge from the favorable outside post position. His regular rider Roy Baldillez allowed him to run his race and over the last half of the test he was devouring ground and gaining with each stride. However, he came up a neck short at the wire as the 9-5 favorite. The Pablo Rabasa Jr.-trained Vodka With Ice covered the quarter mile in :21.340 while scoring his first win from four tries at Los Alamitos. The 8-year-old Vodka With Ice came into the Bank of America Challenge Championship with $179,708 in earnings from 47 starts and took a $161,000 first-place check in the Bank of America Challenge Championship. A gelding by Stoli, Vodka With Ice spent the summer at Les Bois Park and then traveled to Emerald Downs in Seattle to with the $54,000 Bank of America Emerald Downs Challenge and earn his trip to the Bank of America Challenge Championship. Rabasa Jr. started Vodka With Ice in the $30,000 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap as a prep for the Bank of America Challenge Championship and he finished third as the 17-10 favorite after being bumped on both sides at the start. T. Bill Stables’ Cold Cash 123 was looking to return to the form that saw him earn the 2011 world champion title when he raced to Grade 1
wins in the Rainbow Derby, Texas Classic Derby and The Championship at Sunland Park. Always known for his closing charge and his affection for 440 yards, the homebred gelding earned his berth in the Bank of America Challenge Championship with his late-running win in the Bank of America Remington Park Challenge. Trainer Sleepy Gilbreath then pointed the gelding by Oak Tree Special at the Bank of America Challenge Championship and a possible run at the Champion Of Champions, which would be the first meeting with stablemate and all-time leading money-earn Ochoa. Cold Cash 123 was a troubled seventh in the Remington Park Championship and then rested during the summer at Ruidoso Downs. He returned in the Go Man Go Handicap at Los Alamitos and encountered more trouble and was never a factor, finishing eighth. Gilbreath will now need to run Cold Cash 123 in the 400-yard Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials if he wishes to continue his bid to run the gelding in December’s Champion of Champions.
Adequan Derby Challenge Championship
JR Dynasty Mountain bolted to the lead out of the gate and was never threatened on his way to a romping victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship. The victory gave trainer Ryan Hanson his second stakes win on the evening and his career. He won the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship with Honoroso earlier on the program. With Francisco Rubio aboard, Jr Dynasty Mountain blew away from the gate as fast as a horse can accelerate and was all by himself 50 yards into the race. The son of Fdd Dynasty kept going throughout the 400 yards to win by oneand-one-quarter lengths with a :19.556 time. Snowboundbeast was second and never in the battle for the lead while One Famous Episode finished third in the field of 11 sophomores. A year ago, Jr Dynasty Mountain showed his class at Los Alamitos when he was second behind Stel My Corona in the $392,000 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity. The colt went back to Les Bois Park last summer and won the Adequan Les Bois Derby Challenge for trainer Ron Mooseman. He joined the Hanson barn at Los Alamitos and targeted the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship.

RACE RECAPS - QUARTER HORSE Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship
Richard Gardner and RTM Stables Honoroso withheld a late bid from Dashers Midnight to give trainer Ryan Hanson his first stakes win in the Grade 1, $100,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship at 870 yards. Jockey Ramon Guce placed Honoroso in a striking position from the third post position and they accelerated off the turn to gain a clear advantage in the stretch. Dashers Midnight then made a bold bid along the rail to get up for second, a neck behind Honoroso. Call Her Hero finished another nose back for third Honoroso covered the 870 yards in :45.470. A 4-year-old gelding by Fly Jess Fly, Honoroso raced at Los Alamitos early in his career and was claimed for $6,250. He made each of his six previous 2013 starts in the Intermountain region before coming to Los Alamitos for the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship. The Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship was his fifth win from seven outs this year and he was second in the other two races. He earned his berth in the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship with a dominating fourand-one-half-length win in the Red Cell Les Bois Park Distance Challenge. Odds-on favorite All About Larry, the 2012 champion distance horse, was near the lead and then eased in the stretch while making his first start since March.

Pete Scarmardo’s Raising Kain parlayed a superb start into a convincing 30-1 upset victory in the Grade 2, $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship Jockey Francisco Calderon was in a fantastic position on Raising Kain coming out of the gate and the gelding took full advantage of his start. He went on to humble his rivals by one length for his third win from his latest four starts and score what could prove to be a career-changing victory. Raising Kain was clocked in :17.408 for the 350 yards. Time For Jesse Lee was second while Leesa Gone Wild was third in the 11-horse field. Raising Kain did not win his maiden until his fourth career start, however when he found out where the winner’s circle is located he made it a regular stop on the way back to the barn. The Down N Dash son won his trial to the John Deere Retama Park Juvenile Challenge by two lengths and then backed up that effort with a one-half length score in the finals. He was then second by a head in his trial to the Dash For Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park before moving to Los Alamitos and making his local debut in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship as a member of the Trey Wood stable.

Will Rogers Downs, Claremore, OK Rocketair takes off in Black Gold
Karen and Preston Cloud’s Rocketair flew by Comal Blue to score a 9-1 upset win in the $384,750 Black Gold Championship during a stakes tripleheader on closing day, Saturday, at Will Rogers Downs. The Black Gold Futurity is restricted to the offspring of participating stallions. Favorites came through in the other two stakes with Heza Fast Invictus winning the $146,000 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Futurity and Llano Cartel prevailing in the $65,000 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby. Rocketair, who was fractious in his trial, remained calm under jockey Ivan Carnero and got a clean start. Comal Blue raced to the lead and had the advantage until Rocketair accelerated in the final 100 yards and went on to the one-half length win. He was timed in :19.490 for the 400 yards. Steve Kirks’ Comal Blue held on for second while Ratter SM Ranch’s Sm Chicks N Garters finished third. Rocketair has thrived with four wins from four starts at Will Rogers Downs this fall after finishing fifth in his All American Futurity trial at Ruidoso Downs in August. The gelding by Jumpn won his trial to the Black Gold 350 Futurity, but did not qualify for the $95,000 finals. He returned in the trials to the Black Gold Championship and won his trial by a neck and his time of :19.907 was good for the sixth-fastest time. In the OHA Mystery Futurity, Marty and Sheila Powers’ 7-10 favorite Heza Fast Invictus remained undefeated from five starts after he battled side-by-side with 29-1 outsider Champion Huddle for most of the 350 yards before gaining the neck win in the final strides. The Agustin Silva-trained Heza Fast Invictus was clocked in :17.445 to win as the 7-10 favorite. Jz Zoomin was another three quarters of a length back in third. Heza Fast Invictus has done everything asked of him in his five starts. Trainer Kasey Willis started him for a $15,000 claiming tag when he made his debut at Canterbury Park back in July. one-quarter lengths and has not been defeated since that debut. The gelding then went to Prairie Meadows to win his Iowa Double Gold Futurity trial and dominated the futurity by one-and-one-quarter lengths back in August. He was then rested until the Mystery Futurity trials and he responded with a one-length trial win and his time of :17.529 for the 350 yards was the second-fastest time from five trials. In the OHA Mystery Derby, the supporters of 11-10 favorite Llano Cartel had a few anxious moments when he broke in at the start and then had to survive a close three-horse photo to gain his sixth win from 12 career starts. Wade Helton’s Llano Cartel quickly rebounded from his start and was in a tussle with Slew Of Success and Freakin Fast. Llano Cartel proved best in the last few jumps to get the close nose win over Slew Of Success while Freakin Fast was just a head back at the wire. The Alfredo Gomez-trained Llano Cartel earned favoritism after winning the second of two trials by a neck with the fastest-qualifying time of :17.655 for the 350 yards. The son of Teller Cartel had a creditable spring at Remington Park when he narrowly won the Jack Brooks Stakes over Oklahoma-breds and was a close third in the Bob Moore Stakes.

NOV. 2, 2013 Los Alamitos, Cypress, CA Matabari holds on in Super Derby
If it is late in the racing year at Los Alamitos, then it is time for Balgo Racing Team and Marilyn
Gonzalez’s Matabari to shine with a win in a major Grade 1 stakes. Matabari held off a late charge from Scatmandu to take the $953,200 Los Alamitos Super Derby on Saturday night. Last December, Matabari concluded her juvenile season with a close win in the grade 1, $2.1 million Los Alamitos Two Million. She is the third horse, joining One Famous Eagle and Corona Kool, to win the Los Alamitos Two Million and the Los Alamitos Super Derby. Matabari got a sharp break from the inside post position under Ramon Sanchez and was in a tussle with Scatmandu and fastest-qualifier Otoole Hero. The gray Matabari had the lead at the halfway mark of the 400-yard test and withheld a late surge from Scatmandu to grab the head victory. It was a neck back to third-place finisher Otoole Hero, who broke through the starting gate before the start. Matabari, trained by Guillermo Morales, was timed in :19.454 for her second stakes win in her second stakes appearance. Each of those wins have come in the most prestigious race for her division at Los Alamitos. The legendary hall of famer Town Policy is the only horse to win the major Los Alamitos’ divisional races at two, three and four. He won the Kindergarten, Los Alamitos Derby and Vessels Maturity. When he raced in the late 1970s, the Vessels Maturity was contested for 4-yearolds. A Matabari victory in the Champion of Champions this year or next year could, arguably, be compared to Town Policy’s legendary feat. In last year’s Los Alamitos Two Million, Ma-
tabari battled with The August Heat for the entire 400 yards and came out a scant nose in front with a final surge. It was a brave effort considering she had severely lacerated her tongue a few weeks before the trials. After winning the Los Alamitos Two Million, Matabari surfaced last summer in the Paul Jones barn at Ruidoso Downs to point at the Grade 1, $2.8 million All American Derby, which offered the largest purse in Quarter Horse racing history. She won an optional-claiming race in her prep for the All American Derby trials. In her derby trial, she was troubled at the start and made a late rally in the 440-yard trial, but could only manage a third behind Heritage Place Derby winner Brace For Bernal. Matabari was rested until the Los Alamitos Super Derby trials and she responded with a nose win with the third-fastest time of :19.634. Runner-up Scatmandu – leased by Robert A. Gentry, Robert K. Gentry and Robbi Force – won his Super Derby trial by one-half length with the fifth-fastest time of :19.652 and was overlooked at 27-1 odds. Trained by Juan Aleman and bred by the late Bob Gentry, the Scat Daddy (tb)-sired Scatmandu gained his first stakes placing after qualifying for the Rainbow Futurity and the Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs. Third-place runner Otoole Hero, the topqualifier at :19.567, impressively backed up that trial win, considering he broke through the gate. The Burnett Ranches and Johnny Trotter-owned Otoole Hero was making his first stakes start. The Valiant Hero gelding is trained by Trey Wood.
RACE RECAPS - THOROUGHBRED NOV. 23, 2013 Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CA Tamarando dominates late in Real Quiet Stakes A return to a synthetic track and a quick pace helped propel Tamarando to a decisive victory in the $100,750 Real Quiet Stakes Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park. Reserved well off the solid fractions set by 12-1 shot – and eventual third place finisher – Karma King, Tamarando rallied widest of all to collar the leaders with less than an eighth of a mile remaining and drew away to prevail by 3 ¼ lengths. Ridden for the first time by Rafael Bejarano, the 2-year-old Bertrando colt out of the Dehere mare Tamarack Bay won for the third time in seven starts and pushed his earnings to $355,120. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track was 1:44.22. Owned by California breeders Mr. and Mrs.
Larry D. Williams, Tamarando, the 5-2 second choice, gave trainer Jerry Hollendorfer his second win in the Real Quiet. The Hall of Famer had won previously with Chocolate Candy in 2008. Worse than third only once in his career, Tamarando returned $7.40, $3.60 and $2.60. Third over Santa Anita’s dirt surface in his initial two starts beyond seven furlongs, Tamarando, who won the Del Mar Futurity Sept. 4, will get another crack at a second Grade 1 victory in the $750,000-guaranteed CashCall Futurity Dec. 14. Bejarano hopes Tamarando can complete the Real Quiet-CashCall Futurity parlay Liaison did with the rider in 2011. A maiden who had finished second at almost 35-1 in the Golden State Juvenile in his fourth start Nov. 1 at Santa Anita, Electric Eddie gained second by three-quarters of a length. The second longest shot in the field at nearly 22-1, he paid $11.80 and $6.40 while the show price on Karma King was $6.60. The 6-5 favorite on the strength of a 5 ¼ length win in his debut Oct. 24 at Keeneland,
Green Mask finished fourth. The Mizzen Mast colt pressed the pace outside Karma King under Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, but wasn’t good enough late. Green Mask wound up a bit more than six lengths behind the winner. Life Is a Joy, who is also trained by Hollendorfer, Mr. Splash, Beach Hut and Better Bet completed the order of finish.

over the 2012 Jackpot Day program. Rise Up, owned by Paul and Adrena Van Doren, won his fourth race in six starts this year, which included a six length victory in his most recent start, the Jean Laffite Stakes at Delta Downs. A bay son of Rockport Harbor, Rise Up completed the 1 1/16 mile race in 1:44.71 over a fast track and earned a $600,000 paycheck for his owners. The clocking established a new stakes record as it eclipsed the time of 2008 winner Big Drama, who covered the distance in 1:44.72. It was also the second Delta Downs Jackpot victory in the last three years for Melancon, who won the race on Sabercat in 2011. Sent off as the 2-1 second choice in the 10 horse field, Rise Up ($6.20) broke well from the outside post position and Melancon guided his mount to the front past Mighty Brown at the quarter pole and secured his position down the backstretch holding a half-length lead through three quarters of a mile in 1:11.94. “Down the backside Gerard gave him breather and that’s where the race was won,” said Amoss, who trained his first Jackpot winner, and saddled My Lute to a third place finish in this year’s Preakness Stakes (Grade 1). From there Melancon let loose on Rise Up, increasing their advantage to three lengths in the stretch. Casiguapo, 6.5-1, second in the Hopeful Stakes (Grade 1) at Saratoga this summer, passed Mighty Brown in deep stretch to wind up second, a 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Rankhasprivileges. They were followed in order by Roman Unbridled,
Whyruawesome, Mighty Brown, Big Bazinga, Coastline, Flat Gone and Rum Point. Coastline, the 8-5 favorite, stumbled at the start, then raced three wide down the backstretch but faltered turning for home and wound up eighth. The 10 points earned by Rise Up moved him into a four-way tie for third place in the Road to the Derby Point standings used to determine starting positions in the 2014 Run for the Roses in case more than 20 starters are entered in the Derby. Rise Up is four points behind Havana (14) and Bondholder (11). Second place finisher Casiguapo picked up four Derby points, Rankhasprivileges, two points, and Roman Unbridled, one point. Three horses from the 2012 Delta Downs, Goldencents, My Lute and Itsmyluckyday all qualified for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Goldencents scored two grade one victories, taking this year’s Santa Anita Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. It was a big day for both Amoss and Melancon, as they teamed up to win the $150,000 Delta Mile with the 5-year-old gelding Grand Contender by 1 ¾ lengths over Agent Di Nozzo in track record time of 1:36.89 for the one mile. The pair also captured the day’s second race with the 5-year-old gelding Done Gone and the 11th race with the 5-year-old Jump Jump. In other stakes action on the program, Robert Masterson’s Tepin scored a 1 ¼ length victory over Bahnah to win the $500,000 Delta Downs Princess (Grade 3) for 2-year-old fillies. Tepin, the 3.5-1 third choice in the seven-horse field, trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Miguel Mena, covered the one mile in 1:38.95. In the $75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes for 3-year-olds at 7 furlongs, Hip Four Sixtynine ($19.60) came off the pace and powered to a 3 3/3 length upset victory for trainer Joseph Foster and jockey Robby Albarado. Today’s record total handle of $5,044,286 bettered the old mark of $4,434,099 set on Jackpot Day in 2011.
NOV. 22, 2013 Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OK Silver Goblin Stakes ends in thrilling dead-heat
over the fast track. As the field turned for home, Okie Ride, the defending winner of the Silver Goblin, surged to challenge for the lead. Under Luis Quinonez, Okie Ride had pressed Fifth Date for the better part of the race to the stretch. Z Rockstar was only a length off the leaders in the lane and responded willingly under jockey Cliff Berry in the drive for the wire. The trio edged clear of the challengers and there were three bobbing heads at the wire which resulted in a dead-heat for the win between Okie Ride and Z Rockstar. The winning time for the race was 1:17.20. Okie Ride, a 6-year-old gelded son of Candy Ride (Arg) from the Geiger Counter mare Tic Tic, is a homebred of John and Kris Richter of the Richter Family Trust of Perkins, Okla. RACE RECAPS - THOROUGHBRED In completing the 7 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:29.72, Warren’s Veneda gave trainer Craig Lewis his second Cat’s Cradle victory. Lewis had won previously with Valentine Dancer for owners Al and Sandee Kirkwood in 2003. He’s the fourth trainer to win the race named in honor of California’s Horse of the Year of 1996, joining John Dolan and Hall of Famers Richard Mandella and Jerry Hollendorfer. In becoming the fifth 3-year-old to win the Cat’s Cradle – which had its inaugural running in 1997 – Warren’s Veneda paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.20 as the 13-10 choice. Worse than third only twice in her career, Warren’s Veneda is undefeated in three appearances at Betfair Hollywood Park. Prior to Sunday, the chestnut had defeated maidens in the Alphabet Kisses on the California Gold Rush program April 27 and won a turf allowance for California breds May 16. “I was glad I was able to get to the outside,’’ said Talamo. “That was the only concern for (Lewis) and I. It looked like (Sister Kate) was the only speed and I was fortunate enough to get around her. “She’s such a classy filly and obviously loves this track. I worked her before her last race (a 7 ¼ length optional claiming victory Oct. 13 at Santa Anita) and she’s even better now than she was then. I think the farther the better with her.’’ Curvy Cat, who won the B. Thoughtful Stakes for Hollendorfer at the same distance during the Spring/Summer meet, rallied from last to finish 5 ¼ lengths clear of stablemate Sister Kate. The 5-1 fourth choice returned $5.40 and $3.40 while the show price on Sister Kate, the race outsider at 7-1, was $3.60. Qiaona, who was seeking her first win in her sixth start over a synthetic surface, and Ciao Bella Luna, the 5-2 second choice, completed the order of finish.

The only other trainer with more than one win in the Sharp Cat is David Hofmans, who won the first two renewals with Zenyatta’s half-sister Balance (2005) and Runway Rosie (2006). Farms of Norman, Okla., the racing operation for music superstar Toby Keith, Smack Smack improved sooner rather than later as his owner led a large cheering section from outside the winner’s circle. Jockey Jake Barton had the mount aboard the late runner and he let the pace of the race dictate where his runner would be positioned. “This horse has his own style. You can’t change much about it,” Barton noted. “If they’re not going to go that much faster up front, then we’ll be a little closer. If they go fast, we’ll be back a little farther. We just ride the race as it comes up and he got me there.” Smack Smack was last in the field of six, nearly 10 lengths removed from the hot pace set by Dunkin Bend and Guns Loaded, as the field went to the lone turn. The speedy pair up front were making their first starts after competing in graded stakes races on either coast. Dunkin Bend won the Grade 3, $100,000 Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park in New Jersey on Sept. 1 while Guns Loaded ran a very close fifth in the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Futurity in southern California on Sept. 4. Dunkin Bend, pressured by Guns Loaded, moved a quarter-mile in :22.74 and a half-mile in :44.72 before giving way at that point. At the top of the stretch, Guns Loaded had control while Smack Smack was wide and beginning to rally. In the final furlong, Guns Loaded had repelled a brief charge from Time Iz Flyin but still had to try and hold on while Smack Smack continued to consume large quantities of real estate. Guns Loaded could not last the distance as Smack Smack made the lead just three strides from the finish, flying by to win by a half-length in 1:23.31 over the fast track. Trainer Don Von Hemel, the patriarch of the training Von Hemels with sons Donnie and Kelly also in the family business, was humble yet pleased with the outcome. “We had a plan and it came together. We’re pretty lucky when that happens.” Keith, enjoying his first major stakes win at Remington Park, where he has campaigned horses for many years, thanked the Von Hemels Remington Park, Oklahoma City, while looking forward to the next challenge. “Don, Donnie and Kelly, they do a great job for OK us. The race Smack as he’s expected to improve as he goes helped launch the stellar 3-year-old campaign for longer in distance. Owned by Dream Walkin out of the Coronado’s Quest mare Miss Coronado, lagged well off the 23.63 and 47 fractions set by Pleasant Miss and 19-10 second choice Be Proud, began to rally strongly around the turn and easily swept past the weary Be Proud in the final eighth of a mile. Owned and bred by Darley Stable, Arethusa, who covered the 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track in 1:45.41, increased her earnings to $75,610. The chestnut filly had finished 5 ¼ lengths behind Be Proud when runner-up Oct. 27 and was 5 ½ lengths behind winner Georgia, the even-money favorite in the Sharp Cat, when third Sept. 27. Arethusa established a pair of Sharp Cat records in her Betfair Hollywood Park debut. She paid $23 – surpassing the $22.20 Midnight Ballet returned in 2012 – and the 8 ¼ length margin of victory bettered the 4 ¼ lengths May Day Rose won by in 2010. The place and show price for Arethusa was $8 and $4.60. “I knew the distance would be no problem,’’ said Harty. “I had two maidens nominated. I worked them (Nov. 11) and decided I’d run this one and not (Afsana). The other one will run (Nov. 22) against maidens. “Arethusa has just improved every race. She’s a super mover and she’s trained here basically all of her career. I knew she wouldn’t get tired. “I thought they would go fast enough and I hoped she could be third. We’ll definitely look at the (Grade 1, $500,000-guaranteed Hollywood) Starlet (Dec. 7) now.’’ One of two representatives from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Be Proud paid $3.40 and $3 while finishing nine lengths clear of 8-1 shot Saintly Joan, who returned $3.80 to show. Georgia, the other Baffert entrant, finished fifth, nearly 33 lengths behind the winner. “She might have bled because at the halfmile I was completely out of horse,’’ said Rafael Bejarano of the favorite.
