Nates Mineshaft, now four-for-four lifetime at Fair Grounds, improved his overall record to 12-5-1-1 and boosted his earnings to $175,428. “If you saw the last race, he was worth the opportunity to try him in here,” trainer Austin Smith said. “He just dominated that bunch. It wasn’t anything like this bunch but he is fourfor-four on the racetrack and we were here and didn’t have to ship anywhere so we took a shot.”

Bid earned his first win since last March’s Grade 2 Mervin H. Muniz Memorial Handicap here at Fair Grounds, getting up in the final stride to defeat Andrews T & S Racing’s stubborn Mr. Vegas by a head in Saturday’s Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap. With regular rider Edgar Prado aboard and carrying high weight of 121 pounds, the South Florida invader bided his time early in the 1 1/8-mile turf event as pacesetter Mr. Vegas was pressed through an opening quarter-mile in 24.40 and continued on the lead through fractions of 49.60 and 1:14.41. Jockey Miguel Mena kept Mr. Vegas going through the stretch but Smart Bid closed determinedly, getting up just before the wire in 1:51.91. “When I got close (to Mr. Vegas) I thought we were just going to blow by but that horse kept on fighting,” said Prado. “I’m glad that I got it.” Smart Bid paid $5.80, $3.40 and $2.60 as the favorite in a field of seven older horses. Mr. Vegas returned $3.60 and $2.60, while David P. Holloway Racing’s Dubious Miss closed

for third and paid $2.80. Smart Bid, now two-fortwo at Fair Grounds, bettered his overall record to 20-5-7-4 while the $75,000 winner’s share of the $125,000 purse upped his career earnings to $891,813. “He really does love Fair Grounds and he is just such a game horse,” winning trainer Graham Motion said by phone after the race. “I was a little concerned because I thought (Edgar) waited a little bit longer than he normally does to ask him to run; normally he asks him quite early. But he obviously knew what he was doing and it just worked out great. Maybe we’ll have to come back for the next one (the Muniz on April 1).”

Summer Applause got rave reviews from her rider Robby Albarado after she proved clearly best in Saturday’s Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes as the final prep for the upcoming $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks March 31. “(Summer Applause) was a great ride from the start to the end,” said Robby Albarado, seven-time Fair Grounds jockey champion, in the winner’s circle after the $200,000 Rachel Alexandra. “She rated kindly on the backside. We thought we’d be third or fourth and we were. I was just trying to be a good passenger. I got clear turning for home and she ran home nice. She’s grown up rapidly in the last couple of weeks.” The race unfolded as Albarado explained it, with eventual runner-up Avie’s Sense, owned by Tall Oaks Farm, setting early fractions of

What’s next for Summer Applause? “We are going to enjoy the moment,” said winning trainer Bret Calhoun. “We want to get the right spacing for her. 800,000 prep has produced Kentucky Derby and Belmont winners

UNLAND PARK -- Who will carry Sunland Park’s mantra of “Gateway to Greatness” in this year’s Kentucky Derby? Is there another Mine That Bird coming to the southern New Mexico track? Will another Ruler On Ice emerge and go on to win one of the Triple Crown races? The answer could lie with the winner of this year’s Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Derby. The 1-1/8-mile derby will be run on Sunday March 25. The winning horse will earn $400,000 and is virtually assured to get a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The derby field is limited to the top 20 nominated horses based on graded earnings. The Sunland Derby in recent years has achieved phenomenal success in producing horses that have gone on to score big in Kentucky, Maryland and New York. None were bigger than Mine That Bird’s improbable run in 2009. The unheralded gelding didn’t win either of his two starts at Sunland — running second in the Borderland Derby that year and fourth in the Sunland Derby — but stunned the bluebloods of racing by romping to victory in the Kentucky Derby, then finishing second in The Preakness and third in the Belmont. Last year, Sunland Derby winner Twice The Appeal finished 10th in the derby, but Ruler On Ice, the third-place finisher at Sunland, came back to win the Belmont Stakes. Astrology, second in the Sunland Derby behind Twice The Appeal, finished third in The Preakness. The field for this year’s Sunland Derby is still a ways from being finalized. Much can happen in the three-plus weeks that remain before horses are entered, but the list of potential entries includes Isn’t He Clever, the winner of the Borderland Derby at Sunland last weekend. It was Isn’t He Clever’s fourth win from six starts and increased his earnings to more than $220,000. His graded earnings total only $12,000 but the overall money the Kentucky bred son of Smarty Jones has earned is more than enough to get him into the Sunland Derby. Graded earnings are the first criteria for determining the Sunland Derby field, but overall earnings are also considered. Isn’t He Clever has finished out of the money only once, that coming last month at Santa Anita, where he finished fifth in the Grade 2, Robert B. Lewis Stakes at 1-1/16 mile. His trainer, Henry Dominguez, said Isn’t He Clever came out of the Borderland in good shape, and he expects to run him back in the Sunland Derby. “That is our plan,” said Dominguez. Isn’t He Clever appears to have answered the question of whether he could handle the longer distances of the Borderland and Sunland Derby. In the Borderland, he settled into third behind stable mate So Far So Fast and Tequila Factor, took the lead in the turn for home, then held off the fast-closing even-money favorite Zackn’mat to win by a length and three-quarters. He was an impressive sprinter during his 2-year-old season, romping to an 11-3/4-length win in the Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland in December and finishing second in the 7-furlong Clever Trever Stakes at Remington last November. After leading through much of the Robert B. Lewis, Isn’t He Clever faded in a trouble-marred trip. But Dominguez said he wasn’t concerned that his horse could sustain his speed for longer distances. “His breeding suggests that he can carry his speed further out,” said Dominguez. “He kind of answered that question (in the Borderland).” Dominguez said Isn’t He Clever, despite the four wins, is still “learning and maturing.” “We’re teaching him how to preserve his speed and save it to the end of his races. We’ve been training him all along to

come from behind,” said Dominguez. “He’s a very talented horse who is coming into his own right now.” All four of his wins have come in New Mexico, two at Zia Park last fall and two at Sunland. He seems especially comfortable on the Sunland surface, and Dominguez believes the home-course factor could give Isn’t He Clever an edge in the Sunland Derby. “It’s where he has been all winter,” Dominguez said. “It’s kind of like a homecourt advantage. This is home for him. He doesn’t have to ship anywhere.” Dominguez also thinks Zackn’mat’s connections may bring him back to Sunland for a rematch in the derby. The late-running dark brown colt finished with a rush after running last through the first half of the race. He is nominated for the Sunland Derby. “I don’t see why they wouldn’t bring him back,” said Dominguez. Isn’t He Clever is owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robinson of El Paso, Texas. Another likely entry in the Sunland Derby is Ender Knievel from trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn. Sunland Director of Racing Dustin Dix said if Ender Knievel runs in the derby, his jockey likely will be John Velasquez, winner of last year’s Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom. Ender Knievel , out of Distorted Humor, broke his maiden in a 7-¾-length win going a mile at Gulfstream Park last month, then ran second to Thunder Mocassin, who went on to win the Grade 2 Hutchinson Stakes at Gulfstream. Distorted Humor, considered one of the country’s top sires, produced Funny Cide, winner of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Bob Baffert, a longtime supporter of the Sunland Derby is having a sensational spring with his crop of 3-year-olds and has several horses nominated. Baffert swept the two divisions of the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park last month with Secret Circle and Castaway and one of those horses could end up in the Sunland Derby.

“Baffert has so many horses, it’s just a matter of figuring out what he will bring,” said Dix. “We expect him to run something in the (Sunland) Derby.” D. Wayne Lukas has nominated seven horses. A total of 175 horses were nominated for the Sunland Derby when the early nominations closed on Feb. 1. Late nominations closed on March 1. “Two weeks out, we should have a good feeling of who’s in and who’s out,” Dix said. The horse that finishes second in the Sunland Derby will earn about $176,000, and that could be enough to get him into the Kentucky Derby. “First will definitely get you in and second you are right there,” said Dix. Dix also said Sunland Park officials are considering changing the name of the Sunland Derby to the Mine That Bird Stakes in 2013. Mine That Bird’s amazing Triple Crown run three years ago was a major factor in the Sunland Derby receiving graded status. “We just want to honor Mine That Bird for what he did for Sunland,” said Dix. Chicago, and he was shutting both outfits down. In all the time I’d worked for him the last four years, I’d probably only seen him three times — you know, that’s when Curlin and Rachel were doing their deal. He had to cut down, and my position was the one he was shutting off. “I worked for Steve for 12 years. I worked for him in ’98 in New Orleans galloping and in Dallas the first year he was leading trainer there. I didn’t think I’d go to Texas, but after I was with Steve that spring in New Orleans, I really had so many live horses to go to Dallas with, I couldn’t not go. I think we ran up $1.1 million in 11 weeks in the first year I worked for him because the horses were a fit. I stayed in Texas with him for three years, and then we started coming over here. I would then go here and Chicago.” Steve Asmussen tops the national win tally with regularity and has arguably the most expansive barn in the country. Yet Tony holds firm, that from his perspective, the situation is akin to the one he now has with Joel, who has 80 head. “It’s pretty much the same ‘cause I had pretty much the same amount of horses wherever I was with Steve as with what Joel’s got. I had 20 here and between 40 and 50 in Chicago, and when I was in Dallas we always had 60. So, I was dealing with pretty much the same amount of horses, the only difference is Steve was running 300 to 400 head across different places, so I ended up talking to him every day on the phone. We didn’t have face-toface like I have here with Joel, but pretty much it’s the same deal.” Tony recognizes that both bosses are very different as far as temperament is concerned — Joel clearly the more laidback of the two — and has the utmost respect for both. “I’m as happy working for Joel as I was with Steve, and I don’t have anything bad to say about Steve’s operation. Both of them are very good horsemen. Steve’s got the best eye for the game anybody’s ever, ever seen. I mean he’s a freak really. How he can do as much as he does is beyond me. It’s not someone I would want to trade places with, believe me. But as far as the business part and the horsemanship, there’s not a whole lot of difference in them. “When I was working for Steve we’d do the charts every night over the phone, and with Joel, it’s the same thing here. We do it together when he’s here but over the

phone when he’s not and Joel is spending more time in Tularosa than he did before. When he’s not here and we work them, he asks my opinion about how they’re going, and I tell him.” Tony is a real straight shooter. Whether it is the cowboy in him or his strong sense of humility, when discussing his work as an assistant trainer, he is direct and uncomplicated. “This is really a simple game. People try to make it a whole lot harder than it is. There’s only pretty much one way to succeed, and that is to know your horses and don’t keep ones you don’t need and make sure they’re happy and fit. If someone’s not there, that’s pretty much what an assistant is supposed to be, to make sure everything gets done.” Being there is one thing but knowing what to look for is another. “Usually it’s how easy they move. That’s the most important thing. It’s got to be easy for them and then they’ve either got to want to or they don’t. If you can get one to run real good once, then you’ve got yourself a good one. “I see what’s around. I’m always there, and I can pick up tendencies that other trainers have and I watch the races. When I worked for Steve we did a lot of claiming for a lot of years so, you’re forced to pay attention. That’s another reason Steve pulled out of here because he moved up to a better class of horse and did not have so many claiming horses.” Tony has a depth of knowledge of horses that can be traced far back, well before his time with Steve, to his childhood. He grew up on a dairy and potato farm in Idaho, the eldest of four children and the only boy. “My uncles were horsemen and my Dad rode saddle horses and stuff. We were into chariot horses and relay horses when I was a kid, so I’ve been training horses all my life. Chariot races would be two horses pulling a cart more than 440 yards. They used to have relay races at rodeos where they’d run, say, five horses two miles a piece, pass a baton or change saddle, a pony express race.” “I think we got a horse when I was 7, and I broke my first horse when I was about 12. I rode races in the bushes in Idaho from 13 until the time I left, and I was 18 by the time I’d figured it out and was too heavy.” Rodeo was a different story, and Tony remained active on the circuit to age 28,

having notched up 12 years as a bull rider. “Well, I come here from California when I quit rodeo and I married a girl from here, her Dad was a stall man for the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque. I fell in love with being a cowboy. I’ve been a cowboy all my life and it’s a pretty comfortable place for a cowboy to hang out here.” That is when Tony took up a training license in the state and for the next decade, Belen, near Albuquerque was home. The barn of A.I. Mathiasen won 11 stakes races in five years across the Downs at Santa Fe, the Downs at Albuquerque and Sun Ray Park, Farmington. Tony unequivocally declares Hadapleasure the best horse he has ever trained. His stable star captured the 1995 Santa Fe Futurity and two overnight stakes and still holds a track record there. “I raised a family in New Mexico before there were slots. I did it on my own because I couldn’t afford to hire anybody and I couldn’t afford to charge enough then. If Santa Fe hadn’t shut down or got the slots sooner, I’d have never left to begin with. That was just timing. “I trained on my own for 10 years before I went to work for Steve. I left here when they shut Santa Fe down in ’97. I went home to Idaho and helped my folks sell their house, helped them move and took some Quarter Horses to Canada for a friend of mine. Then I went to Keeneland and worked the November Sale and got a job with Dallas Stewart in New Orleans, but it didn’t pan out.” As one door closes, another door opens, as was the case in New Orleans. Having never previously met Steve, Tony learned of an opening through Scott Blasi, a now long-time active assistant trainer for the Asmussen barn himself. Their association eventually enabled Tony to come full circle in his New Mexico journey that continues to strengthen through his current partnership with Joel, who values his experience and work ethic. “I look for someone who cares about my horses, is honest and consistent in not only being at work but performing the necessary tasks on a daily basis. I need to know that things are being done right when I’m not there. Tony has been all around the country and has seen many different operations and brings that experience to the barn. He is very dependable and knowledgeable about the business.

The unsung heroes of the racing world

Behind the scenes with the starting gate crew

nyone who has ever watched a horserace has seen the familiar routine of horses preparing for competition. The “Call to the Post” is played, the field enters the racetrack and parades in front of the grandstand. After their warm up, the horses approach the starting gate, are loaded in, the bell sounds and off they go. It looks so effortless that most spectators take it for granted, but the work of a starter and the starting gate crew is one of the most underrated roles in horseracing. And from what I observed from spending time with Paul Stutes and his staff at Sam Houston Race Park, the job is far from easy. Few racetrack employees face the day-to-day challenges of the gate crew. They begin their day in the early hours of the morning, schooling horses and giving them some experience entering and becoming comfortable in the starting gate. On race nights, you see them prior to each race, patiently loading their horses into the starting gate and standing beside horse and rider until the race commences. Paul Stutes is the starter at Sam Houston; he is supported by a 12-man crew with varying backgrounds and personalities. There is a father-son team, known as “Chano” and “Junior”; Jimmy, who gallops horses in the morning for one of the train-

ers; John commutes from his other job in Waco; “Ali” who served as an assistant trainer for his brother; Joel was a jockey and Dustin, who just returned to Houston after serving in Iraq. Most have grown up around horses. They are strong, hardworking and instinctive in their ability to anticipate the unexpected and respond quickly to protect both the horse and rider. Split-second reflexes are a job requirement, and while they may not all look like bouncers at a night spot, their strength cannot be underestimated. “We don’t start work at 7:30 a.m.,” said assistant starter John McKinnon. “Our day begins at 5 a.m. in the gym when we bench press weights.” His comment was met with laughter from the close-knit group of men, and humor certainly comes in handy when you see the potential dangers they face in their line of work.

Morning works Most horsemen recognize that success on the racetrack is a result of preparation in the morning. While breezing, galloping and working in company with other horses is an important part of train-

ing, so is familiarity in the starting gate. A tremendous amount of effort is expended to ensure that racehorses are comfortable in the starting gate. From the introduction to the tightly enclosed space, to seeing horses to either side of them, to being able to relax while a 12-horse field is loaded, each step has its challenges. are able to school their horses in the starting gate with Stutes and his crew. Some will be seeing the gate for the first time. This may involve the horse simply walking in, standing and backing out. Others stand, then work 3 furlongs with the bell. Some are schooled individually, others in company. With the first-time starters, the gate crew and riders never know what to expect. “Basically, you want to keep them relaxed and get them to stand on all four feet,” explains Stutes. “When they are nervous, tensed up, they’ll hop in the air and that’s not going to result in a good start.” Stutes makes notes on each horse that he sees in the morning. “The goal of morning works is to get as much information on a horse as possible,” said Stutes. “Every horse is an individual; just like people. You have to learn what it takes to make the horse walk in the gate as quietly as possible. It boils down to the temperament of the horse and how well the owner worked with him as a baby.” Stutes places a high premium on early handling of a weanling. “It all starts from day 1, when a horse is born,” explains Stutes. “I’ve been doing it all my life and have raised a bunch of babies. The more hands-on, the better. Two-year-olds who have never seen a human spell trouble. They feel forced, and it makes our job tough.” On a recent cool, breezy Saturday morning, a 3-year-old colt walked into the gates for the first time with complete ease. Apprentice jockey Gerardo Mora was aboard, and was ready to breeze him from the gate. However, once another horse loaded next to him, the once-calm colt became extremely agitated, thrashed around and threw Mora out the back of the gate. Mora suffered a bloody lip and assistant starter Dustin Enderle’s hand was bloodied in the fracas. “It was his first time,” said Mora. “He got nervous when he saw the horse enter the gate next to him. It’s an important part of training.”

Enderle knew what was coming. “When they start shaking and drop their head, you better be ready,” he commented. He stoically applied pressure to his hand and simply shrugged when asked about it condition. “My hand is still attached,” said Enderle. “It was almost healed from the last time I got cut.” When training hours are over, Stutes enters his comments into the track’s InCompass program. His assessment of a horse’s behavior in morning works will be helpful come race time. It can also be shared with the starters from area tracks including Lone Star Park, Delta Downs and Remington Park. “Some trainers will stand their horses the day of the race,” said Stutes. “A lot of trainers will school them a couple of days before with a rider, but just bring them up with a pony horse the day of the race, just to get them to relax.”

The minute the horses break from the gate, one of the crew jumps into the truck to move the gate to a rail position so as not to impede the horses coming around the turn. Watch them in action and you will see how they pay attention to every nuance of the horses’ behavior approaching, entering and standing in the starting gate. Without a spoken word, an extra man will be there to assist if a horse is balking or showing signs of duress. “One thing is for sure,” stated Stutes. “This is not a one-man show.”

ing a trainer. “It begins with the starter and him having good help,” adds Mayfield. “Paul does an excellent job. He’ll come to my barn and get background on my horses. Everything I run, I school and stand them in the gate. You have to spend time in the mornings, even after they have run.” Stutes is committed to maintaining good relationships with horsemen. “Most trainers work with me, because they know I want to help them,” said Stutes. “They know how each horse acts around the barn; we share information. Some starters are stubborn and want to do it their way. I want to do what’s best for the horse, and trainers see that.”

Dangerous job Members of the starting crew are required to wear a flak jacket and helmet, but despite the protective gear, each has had his share of broken bones and bruised knuckles. When a racehorse, which can weigh up to 1,200 pounds, gets fractious in a confined 3-foot-wide space, injuries can occur. Despite the Continued from pg. 11

padding on the sides, the 26,000-pound stainless steel gate is a formidable structure. The assistant starters must maintain control of their horses and have little room for escape if a horse flips in the starting gate. If they do not let go of the horse in time, they can be dragged out of the gate and suffer serious injury. “The safer you are with the horse, the less injuries to the human connections,” summarizes Stutes. “Take care of the horse, the jockey and starting gate men will be safe.” Other than the threat of thunder and lightning, races take place on cold, rainy and extremely hot days. Last summer, Sam Houston ran 17 trials for the Sam Houston Futurity. With full fields of 2-yearold Quarter Horses, that was no easy day at the office.

Benefits for horse industry in tax bills American Horse Council

Several tax bills were passed in the last Congress that extended tax benefits for the horse industry for additional years. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, better known as the stimulus act, the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act, and the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, passed during the lame-duck session, all included important tax benefits.

Individual tax rates

The legislation passed in December, 2010 fixed individual income tax rates at current levels for two more years, through 2012. The marginal rates stay at 10 percent to 35 percent depending on one’s income bracket. The rate structure is indexed for inflation. Had the bill not been passed and the current rates allowed to increase, tax rates would have risen about 4 percent for each bracket. The tax rate on capital gains remains at 15 percent through 2012, rather than rising to 20 percent. The tax rate on dividends remains at 15 percent through 2012, rather than being taxed at the same rate as a taxpayer’s ordinary income, which could be as high as 35 percent. Payroll taxes for all workers and the self-employed are reduced 2 percent from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent, and 12.4 percent to 10.4 percent, respectively, for 2011 on wages up to $106,800. This will put extra buying power in the

pocket of every U.S. worker.

Estate tax rate and exemption

Effective January 1, 2011, the top estate tax rate is 35 percent with an exemption of $5 million for individuals and $10 million for married couples through 2012. This means that only estates valued at over $5 million ($10 million for married couples) will be subject to the tax.

Imaging modalities such as MRI and CAT scans require special equipment only found in veterinary hospitals and require specialized training to operate them.

Practical applications

There has also been considerable research to better characterize the causes of injuries. Studies on bone microdamage, joint shape, track surface qualities, epidemiologic factors (studies of various traits such as breed, age, sex, racetrack, etc.) that lead to fracture and computerized modeling (used to determine the amount of stress within tendons, bones and joints) have all been performed. Now that we have a better understanding of the cause of injuries, the industry must improve practical applications of this information to prevent bone fractures. For instance, because recent evidence has shown that the shape of a joint plays a role in the incidence of fracture, the abnormal shape of a joint must be occurring during growth and development. Therefore, improved monitoring and use of imaging techniques are needed to try and maximize normal limb conformation and shape in foals. Racetrack monitoring and further research on how a horse moves is also desperately needed to help understand the role of the track surface in leading to injury. Inertial sensor technology has improved significantly and can be used to measure the movement of the horse’s limbs and also the amount of force with which they strike the ground. This technology can be used during training to monitor limb use, and help to identify any abnormal limb movement that may be an early indicator of injury. Abnormalities in bone quality have also been characterized at the biochemical and molecular level, and genetic and biochemical marker techniques. Biomarkers measured in blood samples have been characterized in horses and show promise to monitor changes that might predispose a horse to injury. In addition, further research to develop imaging techniques such as standing computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging is needed to make them more practical. If standing techniques can be maximized and used at the racetrack, horses predisposed to injury can be identified before injury occurs. To further research to develop these techniques, industry partners are needed to develop and commercialize these practical techniques. Overall, great advances have been made in understanding the causes of injury in racehorses, and some practical methods have been developed to identify horses that may be predisposed to injury. Research to date has answered some of the questions, but more research is needed to allow stall-side application of techniques that potentially can be

FEB. 24, 2012 Clenbuterol suspended in New Mexico beginning April 20

The New Mexico Racing Commission in a meeting on Feb. 23 suspended the use of clenbuterol for thoroughbred and quarter horse racing, effective April 20. The New Mexico Racing Commission voted Thursday to suspend for 12 months the use of the substance for both breeds, a move that some in the horse racing industry see as a step toward ensuring a level playing field. “This is a great step forward for racing in New Mexico and throughout the United States,” said Shaun Hubbard, general manager of Ruidoso Downs, home to quarter horse racing’s largest event, The All American Futurity. “This is a big step to enhance the integrity of racing and is, simply, doing what is best for the horse,” Hubbard said in a statement issued Friday. The suspension will take effect April 20, the first day of racing at SunRay Park and Casino in Farmington. Colorado and Wyoming already have zero tolerance policies for clenbuterol use in quarter horse racing, according to the Texas-based American Quarter Horse Association. California and Indiana have lowered their thresholds for the substance, and regulators in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana are considering similar measures to crack down on its use in races. Horse trainers said Friday the commission’s move to include thoroughbreds in the suspension marks a first among states. to breathe easier while exercising. The suspension stems from concerns about a nonapproved version of the drug being overused in an effort to improve performance. Trey Buck, executive director of racing at the American Quarter Horse Association, said having New Mexico on board is a big step given the state’s importance in quarter horse racing. “We’re definitely going to keep pushing it,” he said. “There’s debate on the national level if this is as big of a problem in thoroughbreds. Just from the outcry from our horsemen and the race tracks and the racing secretaries we deal with, we knew it was a problem in quarter horse racing.” Clenbuterol use picked up as a means to help horses build muscle after the industry did away with anabolic steroids in 2008. High doses can have adverse effects and even cause death. While horsemen see a benefit to using the version of the medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration in recommended doses, Buck said the association kept hearing from veterinarians, horsemen and lab directors about an illegal version that kept turning up in samples. Dick Cappellucci, a third-generation trainer from southern New Mexico, said he doesn’t doubt that some horsemen have misused the medication. With the suspension, he said the playing field will be leveled. “It’s going to make a difference when it comes to training. But as horsemen and trainers, we will adjust,” he said. Jack McGrail, executive director of the New Mexico Horsemen’s Association, said

not everyone was in agreement with the suspension and the inclusion of thoroughbreds. However, he said the association supports initiatives that benefit the sport and the animals’ health. “The challenge is more around how we solve the problem of overuse of the substance,” McGrail said. Thousands of races are held each season in New Mexico, where tracks operate anywhere from 42 days to more than two months. Blood and urine samples are taken from the winner and a randomly chosen horse from each race to ensure the state’s doping rules are being followed.

Sam Houston Race Park will initiate a purse increase for the remainder of the 2012 Thoroughbred meet. An additional $1,000 will be added to each of the races, an increase of 6.5 percent for the final twelve days of the racing season, which concludes on Monday, March 12. The purse increase in fueled by a 23 percent upswing in handle, compared to 2011. “We are very excited about the early success of our meet,” said Eric Johnston, vice president of racing. “The purse increase is our way of thanking the horsemen for their support. We look forward to three more great weeks of racing.” The 2012 Thoroughbred meet continues with post times set for Friday and Saturday (7 p.m.), Sunday (5 p.m.) and Monday (1 p.m.). The meet will feature special events including Ladies Night this Saturday February 25, the $150,000 MAXXAM Gold Cup on March 3 and Camel & Ostrich Races on March 10. The graded stakes placed filly Glinda the Good cruised home a confident three and one-half length winner in the $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday. Trained by Steven Asmussen, Glinda the Good roared past a game challenger in Ize in Trouble to take the title in the local prep race for the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks to be run on March 25. Glinda the Good was making her first start since running sixth in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs last November 26. She had finished third in the Grade 2 Pocahontas Stakes last October. With her glossy resume, the Hard Spun filly raced as the heavy 1-2 favorite in her Sunland debut and responded in kind with a terrific effort. Under a thoughtful ride from Roman Chapa, Glinda the Good raced comfortably in the third place down the backstretch of the one mile event for three-year-old fillies. The Kentucky-bred responded eagerly to Chapa’s direction and split runners menacingly. The talented filly commenced a strong 3-wide rally heading in the stretch drive. The favorite gained even terms with Ize In Trouble and eventually kicked clear for a dominant win. She sped through the route in a good 1:37.21. The winning margin was a neck. Flores’ accomplishment was instrumental in generating a Pick Six carryover of $135,405 into Thursday’s program when racing resumes at Santa Anita. It is projected that Thursday’s Pick Six pool will exceed $750,000. “This has been a dream of mine since I was eight years old,” Flores said in discussing his aspirations and achievements. “I wanted to be here so much I didn’t even care if I was a galloper; I just wanted to be around horses. “Now I’m here winning races, and winning a stakes race is the best feeling ever. I saw the wire and I saw my nose in front of another horse, but it was a tight race. I was really scared and couldn’t wait for the wire to get there.” While the teenager was enjoying a landmark occasion, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert happened upon a subpar afternoon. Subpar, when measured by his recent accomplishments. After saddling the day’s first winner, Tiz the Tide, to extend a victory streak to 13 straight races and 14 of 15 spanning races at Oaklawn Park and Golden Gate Fields in addition to Santa Anita, Baffert finally cooled. His next two Santa Anita starters finished out of the money including 5-2 second-choice Brigand in the Baﬄe. Trained by Doug O’Neill,

Irish-import Tones tracked the early pace set by Smoking G, took a short lead in midstretch and had enough left under Flores’ urging to win his second United States start. Stoney Fleece nipped Passing Game by a nose for the place with Smoking G another half-length back in fourth. The final time was 1:13.47. The winning mutuels on Tones were $29.60, $8.20 and $5. Stoney Fleece returned $3.80 and $3. The show price on 21-1 shot Passing Game, ridden by Kevin Krigger, was $7.20. “The race set up great for us today,” said O’Neill. “He had a target today, but you never know how a horse will handle crossing over the dirt, but he crossed the dirt perfectly. I’m not sure what’s next, but it will be something on the grass.” Owned by Steve Keh, Westside Rentals.com and W C Racing, Tones had shown little in his U.S. debut while racing one mile over Santa Anita’s dirt surface in an allowance race on Feb. 9. He had arrived in this country with a 2-2-2 record from six starts in England. The Baﬄe’s winning purse of $44,400 more than doubled his European earnings of $21,568.

Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA Kool Million wins close Maiden Stakes

Ed Allred’s Kool Million raced to his second win from three starts by prevailing in a tight finish over One Famous Ferragamo and Jennifers Challenge in the $151,750 Maiden Stakes on Sunday night at Los Alamitos. The 350-yard Maiden Stakes is restricted to threeyear-olds who were still maidens on December 1 and it was a race record purse.

One of three finalists owned by Allred and trained by Jose Flores, Kool Million challenged for the lead throughout the race and got the nod at the finish to win by a head with a :17.642 time under jockey Cruz Mendez. Runner-up One Famous Ferragamo, a 29-1 longshot, was a nose ahead of Jennifers Challenge. A gelding by Bono Jazz, Kool Million made his first career start after the cut-off date for the Maiden Stakes conditions (a maiden as of December 1). The gelding scored a winning career debut on December 30 at Los Alamitos when he raced 300 yards in :15.680. He then finished second behind New Look in his Maiden Stakes trial with the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.602. The Allred-Flores connection also finished fourth with Warm Form and 10th with Bawdy. Deleyco Race Team’s One Famous Ferragamo, a gelding by First Down Dash and out of One Famous Lady, was winless from six starts as a juvenile and then stepped forward for trainer Paul Jones this year with a maiden win and a third

Von Hemel felt that the Jersey Lilly was a good comeback effort and decided to send her back to Houston. It proved to be a very wise decision. Puddy Tap, a 4-year-old Tapit filly, shipped in from Fair Grounds for trainer Steve Margolis. The striking gray took the lead in the mile and onesixteenth main track feature under rider Corey Lanerie, and ran early splits of 24.10 and 48.22. She faced some pressure on the outside from Standbyyourmangirl, under Larry Taylor. However it was the gutsy ride by Sam Houston’s leading rider Glen Murphy, who found room on the rail and zipped by Puddy Tap, crossing the wire in 1:44.91. This was the first stakes win for Always in My Heart, who was making her 18th career start, with five previous wins to her credit. “She relaxed so well for me on the backside,” said Murphy. “I knew I had room on the rail and she had plenty left. I want to thank Donnie for putting me on her.”

Assistant trainer Crystal Campbell accompanied the mare from Oaklawn Park to Houston and saddled for Von Hemel. “She came out of her turf race real well, even though she had a rough trip,” said Campbell. “She likes it here and had a great inside post. I was really impressed; she’s always finished her races with a great burst of speed.” Murphy who won three races on the card, had another reason to celebrate as his wife, Joy Rose Murphy, was crowned Mrs. Oklahoma this evening. “I’m proud of my wife,” said Murphy. “I’ll tell you what, I’m a lucky man.” Always in My Heart returned $6.00 as the second betting choice. Puddy Tap held on for second followed by Standbyyourmangirl, Miss Hockaday and Patty’s Pride. The $150,000 Maxxam Gold Cup will be run on Saturday, March 3. Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s Reina Del Fuego made a furious charge after hopping at the start to run down Touch Of Paso and win the $25,000 Denim N Diamond Stakes at Los Alamitos on Saturday night. Under a strong hand ride from Adrian Loza, Reina Del Fuego won the 350-yard dash for four-year-old mares in :17.685 with an expanding one-half length margin. Touch Of Paso finished a head in front of Oh La Traffic in the six-horse field. Trained by Ugo De La Torre, Reina Del Fuego also broke slowly in the Corona Kool Handicap, but her rally came up short of Touch Of

Paso and she finished second, beaten by one-half length. The Walk Thru Fire daughter now has three wins and a pair of second-place efforts in her latest six starts. Makors Finale finished one-half length ahead of Born Force. From the Sandi Gann barn, Taylors Deal was making his fifth career start and raced to his second-straight stakes win at Turf Paradise. He prepared for the Turf Paradise Derby with a two-and-three-quarterlength win in the Lost In the Fog Stakes at six-and-one-half furlongs. Karl Krieg III’s homebred Makors Finale was fourth in the Lost In The Fog and then won an optional-claiming race over one mile at Turf Paradise in gate-to-wire fashion. In the Arizona Oaks, Michael Talla’s Regal Betty drew away from the pacesetting favorite Lasso From El Paso to gain he first stakes win after facing stronger stakes competition in Southern California. Clever roared home a rousing winner in the $150,000 Borderland Derby sponsored by Casa Ford at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday. Isn’t He Clever relaxed very kindly heading into the backstretch of the one and one-sixteenth mile prep for the $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III). The Smarty Jones gelding accepted his position smoothly in the three path and was free of traffic while chasing stable mate So Far So Fast and Tequila Factor. Medellin gave his mount the cue to go rounding the far turn, and Isn’t He Clever accelerated menacingly to the front. He swung into the stretch and took command with a stylish move. In deep stretch, the winner poured on the pressure and had plenty left in the tank. The 3-2 second favorite powered home to win by one and three-quarter lengths in a fast time of 1:43. The timing just missed the track record of 1:41.91. An elated winning trainer Henry Dominguez said, “We couldn’t have had a better trip. The race wound up like we had planned. He ran a lot better today. Last time out, the rider wanted the early lead, and that’s not what we wanted. We learned a lot today, and now have a better idea of where to place him.” Santa Anita maiden winner Zackn’mat produced an energetic late move but could not threaten the winner. Comedero and All About Allie were the best Arkansasbred runners in 2011 and unfortunately for their competition, it looks like they could be even better this year after easy repeat victories in Saturday’s $50,000 Nodouble Breeders’ Stakes and $50,000 Downthedustyroad Stakes, respectively, at Oaklawn. Despite making his first start since a life-threatening hock injury, Peter Redekop’s Comedero was sent off as the heavy 2-to-5 favorite and he did not disappoint his backers. He broke quickly from the rail and proceeded to set pressured fractions of 21 3/5 and 45 1/5 for the first halfmile while fending off rival Destinare. He shook free of his competition entering the stretch and drew off to win by 3 ½ lengths in 1:10 2/5 for six furlongs over the fast track.
