The Los Alamitos Championship and the Champion of Champions are at Cold Cash 123’s favorite distance of 440 yards. His sole defeat at 440 yards came after he got a horrid start in last year’s Grade 1, $1.3 million All American Derby and finished seventh as the 6-5 favorite. That was his latest defeat. T
he success of Canada-based Mexicanborn jockey Mario Gutierrez has been a breath of fresh air to the racing industry this year. The 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winning rider remains humble and grateful to those who have supported him in his North American journey that began six years ago. Denied the chance to complete the Triple Crown on I’ll Have Another due to a career-ending tendon injury in Belmont Stakes week, Mario took the devastating news in his stride. This skilful rider, a two-time champion at Hastings in Vancouver, British Columbia (2007, 2008) and this year’s recipient of the ESPY award, proved that when Lady Luck came knocking, he was ready both professionally and emotionally. Fans in the Pacific Northwest had long been familiar with the promise that Mario had displayed and were aware of the solid grounding that owner Glenn Todd of North American Thoroughbred Horse Company and trainer Troy Taylor had fostered, taking the young man under their wing, looking out for his interests at every turn. The national audience got wind of the growing momentum that was emerging along the Derby trail between Mario and I’ll Have Another but did not appear to really take him or his horse seriously at first as evidenced by their upset win at 43/1 odds in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes in March. The media’s mad rush to get to know him was on in earnest as the duo parlayed each win into a bigger and better one. The racing world quickly found that they had a true gem in Mario, giving off an inner confidence and openness to match the natural talent he showcased on the track. His winning Triple Crown rides were faultless and so was his poise in having to sit out the final leg won by Union Rags, a familiar foe he had comfortably defeated before. Deservedly, at age 25, Mario is now try-
ing his hand at Santa Anita and though the Southern Californian circuit may be considered a tough nut to crack, the writing is on the wall that he can find his place there. Opportunity is a key word. The illusion that only celebrity named jockeys can win big races has been exposed before, but some racing pundits are slow learners. Mario has earned his stripes, and for Hastings fans, his branching out into deeper waters is an endorsement of the core values of hard work and dedication that he has brought to their track. Emerald Downs’ fans feel just as proud, and it was fitting that this summer, Mario would win the most prestigious race in the Pacific Northwest, the 77th Longacres Mile on the exceptional 4-year-old, Taylor Said, handing his owner and closest mentor Glenn Todd an emotional victory. Recently, I caught up with the young man whose 2012 magic carpet ride is still not over. You won the 2012 Kentucky Derby but let’s turn the clock back one year. How much attention did you pay to the 2011 Derby? I had always paid attention to the Kentucky Derby. Everyone in the US and Canada knows about the Kentucky Derby, and I remember watching it, saying to myself, one day I’m going to be there. So you really did have aspirations that one day you would be there? You know what, as a dream like every jockey’s dream that I wish I could ride there one day. I had that in my head but at the same time, I was very realistic, knowing where I was. I just never really expected that to happen to me. How have the Triple Crown successes changed your life? A lot. People see me in a different way. I have a lot more opportunities to travel that I never imagined before with a chance to ride a lot more races around the country like
Florida, Chicago, Maryland, Virginia, Monmouth, Santa Anita. The most surprising thing that happened once you became a Kentucky Derby winning jockey? You know, it’s the people and places that you do go after that. You win the Kentucky Derby, and the journey of The Triple Crown begins and there is a lot of media. A lot of TV stations talk to you. And before, nobody really knew anything about me. They just knew I was this guy that came from Canada but that was all. So now everybody is interested in my story, to see where you came from and how you get there. It changed a lot. What’s the big difference between a smaller and larger racing circuit? To me, it’s actually no different. I am used to riding at Hastings and feel really comfortable, but I love the big racetracks like the American racetracks and Mexico City. To me it’s the same, but to people in the US, if you came from a track like Hastings they look at you as though you are a little bit less than riders from America because they don’t even consider a 5/8 racetrack, a bullring racetrack, a real racetrack. Isn’t that a little frustrating? It can I be I guess, but I never really let that bother me so much. What would you like for yourself next? I am excited to be going back to Santa Anita. I want to establish myself there, and if I can be one of the top riders at Santa Anita and ride the circuit, that would be great, to be one of the top. Will you still ride in the Pacific Northwest? Sure, anytime. I’m not going to forget about my connections here. I will put my base in LA, but if Troy or Glenn needs me to ride here (Hastings) or at Emerald Downs, it will be my pleasure. I can never say no to those guys. SureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • October 2012 • Vol. 6 No. 45 11
What has been the reaction from the jockey colony in Southern California to you, say from big-name jockeys like Mike Smith? They’re wonderful people. Mike Smith is one of the classiest guys ever. He’s really, really nice, and I talked with him before the Santa Anita Derby, and Garret Gomez is another so very, very friendly. They have nothing but support for me and that really means a lot to me because they didn’t know me before. In the Triple Crown, which was the harder race to ride, the Derby or the Preakness? You know, the Kentucky Derby because a lot of people tried to mess with my head and said that I was never going to be able to pull it out, that it was an unknown racetrack to me and that I didn’t have the experience. That made me work a little bit extra hard mentally to prepare for it and because I then knew what it was like to have ridden in the Kentucky Derby, it was not as tough in the Preakness.
Weren’t you afraid of losing the ride to a more famous jockey? In my head, after I won the Santa Anita Derby, I knew how the business was, so I knew there was a chance that they would probably take me off the horse and put on someone else with a bigger name. It didn’t really bother me because at that point my dream was already made. I wanted to win the Santa Anita Derby and the Robert Lewis, so already that was good enough for me.
How would you describe your relationship with Glenn and Troy? Since I’ve been here in Vancouver -- six years -- over the last four years, I have lived with them. It’s like their house is my house. Until today, I am still under contract on Glenn Todd horses and ride first call for him, all his Who was the one that batted for you the horses but now the relationship is more than most? just a work relationship. Where were you when you learned of the news of his scratch from the Belmont? I was in a hotel room in New York and I got the news first, before anybody else. Mr Reddam phoned me to tell me to sit down and that he had some not-so-good news. I Were you nervous? was sad right away. So many emotions up Aha. There was quite a bit. How early in the campaign of I’ll Have Another did you suspect you had a Derby quality horse? You know this is a funny story. I worked I’ll Have Another actually two weeks before the Robert Lewis Handicap. As soon as I get off him, I phoned Troy and Glenn to say that I found this horse that I knew they were never going to let me ride because he was back there and that he was going to be the next big name. And two weeks later I pulled off that race on him at 43/1, then the Santa Anita Derby, and then every time I got on him we were a team and he was with me. What specifically caught your eye? He was so professional. He moved like a freight train, like a horse that never got tired on you. I would work him 7 furlongs that day and then would cover 6 furlongs as if it was nothing to him. That surprised me. I’d never got on a horse that could run like him.

He must have spotted your talent. I guess, because he gave me the opportunity to come back here and after that first year with Terry, I was offered a contract by Glenn and Troy and have been with them ever since. How was it leaving your family? That was really, really hard. I was only 19 years old at the time and I was always like mamma’s boy, and when I came to this country I couldn’t speak the language. It has been hard for me to go see them a lot now but we stay in touch.

How was the transition to North America? It was big especially because I didn’t know many people. It was hard, but somehow I adapted. Has riding on a bullring helped your career? I think it has helped me a lot. Now, when I am going back to Santa Anita to ride the first race, it is just like a two lane highway, you can see clearly where to go and where to get a better position, you have a lot of options. Now you have had more financial success, I hear you are helping your family? I have always helped my family. Ever since I’ve been at Hastings I have always helped support them. My family raised me that way. We never had a lot and with my success I never want to be cocky. I am grateful as I have had so many great people around me that support me 100 percent.
confidence because I already thought I had Winning Machine beaten. That horse has a tremendous kick in the end too. My horse was travelling so easily when he passed him that there might have been a bit of overconfidence as all of a sudden I see him coming back and I had to work so hard in the end. That is what makes such a tremendous race. It was great to pull off that kind of race for my owners.
How important was the Longacres Mile win to you? To go to back to Emerald and win was special. To win in front of people that knew me before, for my fans, that means a lot. It means a lot to come back here and win it for Glenn and Troy. They are like family to me.
What do you enjoy on a day off? I like to play poker a lot. Watch sports -- baseball, hockey -- but I think boxing is my favorite.

Taylor Said could be headed to the Breeders’ Cup dirt mile. What do you think? Oh my god, that would be wonderful. I just hope that the horse is OK and is training good. I’ve already had a wonderful year. I don’t know what else could be better this year. Troy is talking about it, and hasn’t yet made a decision, waiting to see everything is OK, but a Vancouver horse going over to the big race would be awesome.
Do you work out or is riding enough to keep you fit? Riding is enough but I was introduced to the gym in Santa Anita because the level of the jockeys is so high there and I wanted to be at the same level as them so I go to the
gym now. I have quit just a little bit since I have been back in Vancouver, but am ready to go back and get in shape. Do you have a favorite American city? I like New York a lot. By Martha Claussen
here have been many capable hosts of the Bank of America® Challenge Championships, Quarter Horse version of the Breeders’ Cup. The notable event, in its 20th running, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Prairie Meadows. Located in the Des Moines suburb of Altoona, Prairie Meadows hosted its first race meet in March 1989. Polk County voters approved slot machines, which made their debut in 1995, and full casino gaming was approved in 2005. The result is a significant boon to the Iowa economy with more than $1 billion contributed through taxes and charitable donations. This year, Prairie Meadows opened its 168-room onsite hotel and The Meadows Events & Conference Center, a complex with more than 34,000 square feet to accommodate trade shows, meetings and special events.
Concerted effort to land the Challenge Championships Tom Lepic, president of the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association (IQHRA), has been one of the driving forces behind Prairie Meadows getting the nod to host the 2012 Bank of America® Challenge Championships. Lepic deflects some of the credit, but his energy and enthusiasm for promoting racing is hard to deny. “We had to go to Prairie Meadows and pitch them first,” said Lepic. “It’s a huge commitment from a racetrack and it’s no easy feat to find tracks that want to host the Challenge Championship. We had to work with Prairie Meadows to approve running three days a week (instead of four) so that our calendar ran through the end of October.” The Iowa-bred program will take center stage on Friday evening with six stakes races, another source of pride for Lepic, who is serving his second term as president of the IQHRA. “We’ve had a 36 percent increase in Iowa-bred foals this year,” reports Lepic. “For us, it’s not just the numbers, but seeing some really good horses emerge, that can compete here and rival horses from Oklahoma and other leading regions.” Jeff Nelson is the director of marketing at Prairie Meadows. He and his staff welcome the opportunity to showcase a major Quarter Horse event. “We’re just excited about the Bank of

Their horse, Bok Man will represent Texas in the $125,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (Grade 1). “We were thrilled when we won the race in Houston,” said Cynthia Jerman of Cameron, Texas. “Jerry and I have never been to Iowa, and we were excited about making our first trip to the Challenge Championships.” Several weeks after qualifying, the Jermans received a congratulatory box from Prairie Meadows filled with candy, gifts and souvenir items. “That was a wonderful surprise,” said Jerman. “We could not believe that they took the time to think of us with such a nice gesture.”
Kasey Willis is the leading trainer in the 2012 Quarter Horse meeting and is enjoying his second season at the Iowa racetrack. “The thing about Prairie Meadows is that AQHA Racing Conference it’s the nicest facility,” said Wills. “They want In addition to the Bank of America® Chalyou to run your horses here and take really lenge Championships on Saturday evening, good care of you.” “I’ve been to California, Texas and Louisi- AQHA members from across the country ana for the Challenge,” added Willis. “This will convene for the annual AQHA Racing ConferSureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • October 2012 • Vol. 6 No. 45 15

ence. Over a three-day period, a variety of meetings and forums are held to discuss topics including racing medication, marketing and international racing programs. In past locations, such as Los Alamitos, Fair Grounds, Lone Star Park and Evangeline Downs, AQHA committee members have had to shuttle from the host hotel to the racetrack for meetings and live racing. That’s not the case this year at Prairie Meadows, as all the events will take place in one complex, with AQHA members receiving a special hotel rate. “We are very fortunate to be able to have our entire racing conference and Bank of America® Challenge under one roof,” said Trey Buck, AQHA executive director of racing. “Our attendees will not have to worry about shuttling from the hotel to the track. Their conference center is well suited for our meeting needs and the entire staff at Prairie Meadows has been incredibly accommodating. We are certain our members will enjoy every aspect of the 2012 AQHA Racing Conference and Challenge Championships.”
Abundant entertainment and tourist attractions Attendees of the 2012 Bank of America® Challenge Championships and AQHA Racing Conference may not want to leave the property during their
stay. Prairie Meadows boasts a variety of restaurants including A.J.’s Steakhouse, simulcast racing, 2,000 slot machines and casino games including Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Progressive Pai Gow and Ultimate Texas Hold ‘em Poker. For those visitors wishing to see the sights, a free cultural tour of the Des Moines area on Friday, Oct. 26, will be offered. The tour bus, sponsored by Butch and Wyetta Hammer, Bain Ranch, Focus One Source (John and Chris Hovey), Tom and Polly Lepic and Bob and Sandy Brown, will depart at 9:15 am. Stops include the Des Moines Art Center, Pappajohn Sculpture Gardens, Des Moines Botanical Center and the historic East Village. Visitors to Iowa will be sure to enjoy the fall weather and the attractions in Des Moines. On Saturday mornings through Oct. 31, a not-to-be-missed attraction is the Downtown Farmers’ Market. Located in the Historic Court District of the city, Iowa’s finest products are showcased with fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, farm-fresh eggs, cheeses, and baked goods as well as many varieties of Iowa-raised meat such as beef, pork, chicken, buffalo and ostrich. Both Nelson and Lepic are convinced the 20th running of the Bank of America® Challenge Championship will be a rousing success. “I’ve lived in Austin, Kansas City and Las Vegas,” said Nelson.
“There is an unbelievable level of activity in Des Moines. The people of Iowa love their sports teams and college football. We feel very certain that they will embrace this great racing weekend.” Lepic is an owner and breeder; his most famous champion was the indomitable mare, Spit Curl Diva, who represented Iowa in the 2010 and 2011 Bank of America® Challenge Championships. “I had never been to a Challenge Championship until two years ago,” said Lepic. “The fun part of it for me is that I flew my whole family into New Orleans and we got to party on Bourbon Street. I’m just hoping that everyone has that type of experience here and most importantly, that horseracing gets into their blood. As for showcasing the nation’s best Quarter Horses here at Prairie Meadows, I am very hopeful that we will attract people who have never been here before. Once they see the excitement of this level of competition, we are sure they will come back and want to see more.” Martha Claussen has been prominent in the Texas racing industry since 1997 as a publicist, writer and handicapper.

Trainers suspended, fined:
Appeals likely next step for implicated trainers
T
By Pete Herrera
wo more prominent horse trainers accused of drugging their horses with a painkiller many times stronger than morphine prior to the trials for one of the top Quarter Horse races in the country have received multiple year suspensions and fined thousands of dollars. Trainers Jeffrey Reed and Carlos Sedillo were hit with hefty suspensions and fines following hearings before a Board of Stewards at New Mexico’s Zia Park this past weekend. Both, along with two other trainers given similar suspensions and fines last week by stewards at Zia Park, have 20 days in which to appeal the penalties. The appeals would be heard by the New Mexico Racing Commission. If the Racing Commission upholds the stewards’ rulings, the trainers would have the option to take their cases to a district court, including seeking a stay of the penalties. But Racing Commission Director Vince Mares said the suspensions and fines should send a message to those who try to circumvent the state’s racing regulations. “We came through with what we said we were going to do,” Mares told SureBet Racing News. “We don’t care who you are, if you choose to cheat, we are going to go after you.” Reed was suspended from racing in New Mexico for a total of 21 years and fined $23,000. Sedillo was given a 10-year suspension and fined $10,000. Both also lost any purse money the drugged horses earned in the trials for the Ruidoso Futurity, a $600,000 race for 2-year-olds run each summer at Ruidoso Downs. Five of Reed’s horses that ran in the trials in June that decided the Ruidoso Futurity field tested positive for dermorphin, the painkiller that is derived from the skin of a tree frog found in South America. Experts have described dermorphin as being 40 times more powerful than morphine. Mares said one of the five charges against Reed was dropped because the blood and urine sample taken from one of his horses could not be accurately read.
Two of Reed’s horses also tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid that has been compared to testosterone. Reed received a 20-year suspension on the four counts of dermorphin and one year for the two positives for stanozolol. Jess a Zoomin, one of Reed’s horses that tested positive for dermorphin qualified for the finals of the Ruidoso Futurity but ran out of the money in the finals. In August he posted the second fastest qualifying time for the $2.4 million All American Futurity but broke down after winning his trial for that race and was euthanized. Sedillo received five-year suspensions on each of the two positives for dermorphin, in addition to the fines totaling $10,000. The penalties were handed down under racing regulations that were in place at the time the Ruidoso Futurity trials were run. The New Mexico Racing Commission has since adopted much tougher penalties in line with those of the Association of Racing Commissioners International. The two other Quarter Horse trainers accused of using banned drugs during the trials for the Ruidoso Futurity or Ruidoso Derby were John Bassett and Carl Draper. Bassett last week was suspended from racing in New Mexico for 10 years and fined $10,000. Two of his horses tested positive for dermorphin after the Ruidoso Futurity trials. Draper was suspended for 300 days and fined $6,000 because one of his horses that ran in the Ruidoso Futurity trials and three of his 3-year-olds that competed in the $679,000 Ruidoso Derby trials the following day tested positive for ractopamine. Ractopamine is a drug that mimics the effects of steroids and is primarily used to build muscle mass in pigs. It is added to the feed given to hogs and has been approved by the government for use in pigs, but not horses. The Draper-trained 3-year-olds that tested positive were owned entirely or partly by State Racing Commissoner Ray Willis and his wife Lola. Of the four trainers, Bassett and Drap-
er have arguably the most extensive resumes of success as conditioners. Draper won the All American Futurity twice—with Dm Shicago in 2004 and with Heartswideopen in 2007. Bassett won the All American, considered Quarter Horse racing’s most prestigious race, with A Delightful Dasher in 1999 and Ausual Suspect in 2001. Zia Park, which opened its live meet last month, has refused to grant stalls to the four implicated trainers, although their anticipated appeals are still in the works. The Hobbs track lost two days of live racing this past weekend because bad weather made the track unsafe for horses and jockeys, Mares said. “It (track) was very deep and clayish. In my opinion the stewards made a very wise decision not to run,” Mares said. Pete Herrera is a former AP sportswriter and now freelance journalist who covered sports and news for 39 years. His credits include four Summer Olympics and coverage of 40 All American Futurities from 1968 to 2008.

One of the darkest days Louisiana State Racing
Commission imposes harsh penalties upon dermorphin trainers
T
he Louisiana State Racing Commission launched two days of meetings to hear the appeals of eight trainers who have had horses test positive for the powerful painkiller, dermorphin. As reported by The Times-Picayune the Louisiana State Racing Commission chairman Jerry Meaux called “one of the darkest days in Louisiana horse racing,” the commission took a hard stance against eight trainers whose horses tested positive for dermorphin at Louisiana racetracks this summer. The commission handed out suspensions ranging from three years to 10 years, and imposed fines of $2,500 to $20,000 on the trainers following two days of testimony on Thursday and Friday. All three trainers testified that they had never heard of the drug before the positive tests occurred. The commission handed trainer Alvin Smith, who had two prior Class 1 drug violations, the most severe punishment out of the eight trainers. He received a 10- year suspension and $20,000 fine. Smith was suspended by Delta Downs stewards after his horse Dashin Forward, who finished second in the Laddie Futurity on May 26, tested positive. Smith, who was fined after being caught with syringes in 1990 and 1991, testified he didn’t know how his horse tested positive for the drug and still didn’t have a clear understanding of what it did. The commission took particular issue with his lack of knowledge on the drug, and

asked if he had any concern for the use of dermorphin in racehorses. Although Louisiana racing rules recommend a $5,000 fine and a suspension of no more than five years for Class 1 violations, the commission said they considered Smith’s to be an “aggravated” case. Heath Taylor, one of the country’s leading Quarter Horse trainers, was suspended five years and fined $10,000. Taylor testified at length to the commission, stating that there would be no reason to drug First Klas Fred, the horse tested positive following the Grade 3 Develop a Plan Stakes in May. “I don’t think I would be taking that kind of risk for such a small race,” he said. Taylor said he felt dermorphin testing was unreliable, noting that one of his horses had tested positive in Texas, but was cleared after samples sent to a laboratory in Pennsylvania came back negative for the drug. “Just because they say the horse had dermorphin in it, doesn’t mean I it did,” he said. “I would give any amount of money to answer (how it tested positive) and answer it honestly. I know I did not give it.” John Darrel Soileau, who had two horses test positive this summer, was suspended five years for each violation, and fined $10,000 for each. His sentences will run consecutively. Alonzo Loya was suspended five years and fined $10,000. Taylor, Soileau, Smith and Loya were all represented by attorney Donald Kelly, who said they intend to appeal the ruling in court. Kyi Lormand, Lamont Keith Charles and Gonzalo Gonzales, who testified before the commission without representation, all received three-year suspensions and $2,500 fines. Anthony Agilar, who had two horses test positive, received a three-year suspension and $2,500 fine for both violations, but will serve them concurrently. Charles gave state police a syringe be-
lieved to have dermorphin in it after his vet asked him to administer a shot himself. ‘”I said I don’t know how to give shots, so I just kept it,” he said. “I gave it to the state police when they came asking questions after the test came out.” Lormand testified that his veterinarian, Dr. Kyle Hebert, had been giving his horses drugs that Hebert called “human herbs that would boost metabolism and help them breathe a bit.” Lormand confronted Hebert following the positive test, and said Hebert swore it was a natural herb untraceable by drug testing. “If we can’t trust our vet, who can we trust?” he asked. Agilar, who also used Hebert as his vet, said he was told the same thing about the drugs given to his horses. Hebert identified the drugs as additional bleeder medication on the vet bill and either backdated or postdated the date administered, so that it wouldn’t fall on race day. Lormand said he plans to appeal, pending his financial situation. LRC Executive Director Charlie Gardiner said it was “disheartening” to learn that such a drug had been in use in Louisiana. “You never want to believe a drug this dangerous and potent is being used in your jurisdiction,” he said. “It can affect the safety of animal and rider, the fairness of the race, and affects racing through simulcast and gives people a potential negative impression of racing in Louisiana.” Gardiner said an investigation of vets has been ongoing, and could possibly lead to reduced years on Lormand, Agilar, Charles’ and Gonzales’ suspensions, pending the outcome. Dermorphin is a powerful painkiller that is found naturally in frog secretions, giving it the nickname “frog juice.” A synthetic version 40 times more powerful than morphine has been developed as a performance enhancing drug for racehorses. Dermorphin is categorized as a Class 1 drug by Racing Commissioners International. Class 1 drugs are performance enhancing drugs with no therapeutic value, and considered to be the most harmful drugs given to horses. “Class I drugs are purely performance enhancing and not therapeutic,” said National Thoroughbred Racing Association President Alex Waldrop, who testified before the commission Thursday.

Racing Free, an organization founded by a team of industry advocates, is stepping up to address the use of these dangerous and often illegal drugs in horse racing in the United States. Racing Free was created to shed positive light on an industry that is in dire need for a solution. The program is designed to reward owners, trainers, jockeys, leaders and fans who choose to stand against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in equine athletes. The Racing Free Team emphasizes that “it’s no longer about the past, it’s about looking ahead and rewarding those who want to change and give racing a future.” The first leg in the organization’s plan of action is the Racing Free Incentive Program. Participants pay a voluntary per-meet fee of $300 per horse to register in the program. At the end of the meet, all Racing Free members who’ve won a race and pass a drug test receive a $1,500 payout through the Racing Free Incentive Program. letter to the editor
I
just read the SureBet article regarding trainer John Bassett’s 10-year suspension and $10,000 fine. I’ve known John for more years than I can remember, and written dozens of stories about his headline triumphs. Do I know anyone nicer than John? No, I don’t. Do I know anyone more pleasant or more accommodating? No, I do not. Speaking with John always carried a pronounced dose of humor. He can rattle off one-liners with an ease that equals trainer Bob Baffert. That, of course, isn’t surprising since the two men have been friends for decades and frequently traveled together when Baffert still lived in the world of Quarter Horses. In other words, I truly like John Bassett, his wife Ann and his son Joe (Bear). I do not, however, like what two laboratories say about John; that he allegedly injected his horses with dermorphin (frog juice). I do not like what he is accused of doing. If true, it was dishonest; it was an act of cheating. . There’s an old saying that tells us everyone has at least a little larceny in his/her heart. Luckily, most of us require a strong catalyst to awaken that larceny and to, subsequently, push us to act on it. Catalysts such as money. Fame. Greed. And competition. Catalysts such as owners jerking their horse(s) from a trainer’s barn because of too few trips to the winner’s circle. I honestly can’t pinpoint when or where racing veered off the proper path. Maybe it was never on the proper path in the first place. We know the “old days” at bush track were wide open for an “anything goes” policy. Were we unable to make the transition when we moved into major league venues? Was it a way of life that we just couldn’t abandon? Were the temptations too great? Everyone in the industry has heard the adage telling us, “The horse makes the trainer. The trainer doesn’t make the horse.” Every trainer who pulls on a pair of boots before the sun comes up is waiting….waiting for his first big horse. That’s the horse with the shiny key dangling from his halter. That’s the key that opens all the stall doors in a trainer’s barn, filling them with more and more horses. Nobody wants to hang around with a loser when there’s a winner available just a few steps down the shed row. Unfortunately, becoming a trainer is somewhat akin 22 SureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • October 2012 • Vol. 6 No. 45
to becoming a politician. The most honest, upstanding, plain-dealing person in the world can enter the political ranks and, in six months, morph into a wheeler-dealer who’ll miss not a single heartbeat when he cheats the people who elected him. Drugs have gummed up the wheels of racing. The general public either doesn’t know us, or they do know us but don’t like us. Our horses suffer, physically and mentally. We fix it so they don’t feel the pain of minor injuries that easily change into lifethreatening, or life-ending, circumstances. A horse with a broken, flopping leg continues straining for the wire. He doesn’t know his leg is broken until he falls down on the track, perhaps injuring, or killing, his rider while simultaneously jeopardizing the well-being of other horses and jockeys. And let’s not forget about all the owners who write check after check for futurity payments, while unequivocally telling their trainers no drugs? Are they wasting their money? We initiated DNA testing so we could be assured of the parentage of our horses. We thought that eliminated the cheating. But it didn’t. Not fully. Do we know, for sure, that the big money-earning colt we breed to for several thousand dollars really earned that money on his own merits? Or did he amass those dollars on a needle? We don’t know the answer. We must eradicate racing’s drug culture. We must do it for the sake of everyone. I literally and audibly gasped when I read about the 10-year suspension. None of us has ever witnessed such stiff punishment but that kind of discipline is the only thing that will work for us. And in cases where guilt is not disputed, the punishment must stick because that is what will announce, in no uncertain terms, that the decades of drug abuse are coming to a halt. Besides, the fact that this allegedly happened to such a recognized and applauded trainer, means it can definitely happen to everyone else. It’s time for all of us to know the names of the horses who are the runners, truly and honestly. The New Mexico Racing Commission took an important step. Let’s see if it works or, possibly, if the affected horses simply be “transferred?” Diane Ciarloni eaglesrest@centurytel.net www.dianeciarloni.com

nightly on-track handle, and total on-track handle for the 84-night season. The season, which ended on Saturday, Sept. 8, posted a nightly average handle of $1.389 million, an increase of 4.3 percent from 2011’s average of $1.331 million. Nightly average on-track handle rose sharply, up 9 percent to $62,751 from last year’s $57,551. Total on-track handle was $5.2 million, up from $5 million, despite a total of five less racing nights compared to 2011. Total handle for the season was $1.15 million, compared to last year’s $1.17 million. Evangeline Downs, known as the “Home of the Biggest Fields” continued to live up to that moniker as average field size was once again one of the highest in the nation. The fan favorite landed in the winner’s circle an impressive 98 times from 508 mounts, and his mounts earned more than $1.65 million, a solid increase from his 2011 totals of 84 wins and $1.435 million in purse earnings. Hernandez tallied 87 victories and earnings of more than $1.487 million, with Melancon recording 83 wins and earnings of more than $1.396 million. Veteran riders Tracy Hebert & Kerwin Clark rounded out the top five with 77 and 49 wins, respectively. In the race for the trainer’s title, it was déjà vu all over again as Karl Broberg put on a strong second half of the season to catch and pass Keith Bourgeois & Sam Breaux. For the 41-yearold Arlington, TX resident who has been training for less than four years after participating in the sport as an owner, it was his second consecutive training title here in Cajun Country. Sending out winners at an impressive 26 percent rate, Broberg hit the winner’s circle 51 times from 194 starters. In addition, his runners finished in-the-money more than 59% of the time and earned more than $743,000. Bourgeois and Breaux, who finished onesecond in the standings for four consecutive seasons before the emergence of Broberg, both had their usual solid seasons hitting the winner’s circle 46 and 43 times, respectively. Corale Richards, with 28 wins, and Brett Brinkman, with 24 wins, rounded out the top five in the standings. Heavy On Themister, trained by third-generation horseman Shawn David, captured the Evangeline Mile and also set a new track record in a six-furlong allowance event en route to being named Horse-of-the-Meet. The Louisiana bred son of Lion Tamer also finished second in his two other starts at the meet earning more than $120,000 for his owners Rebecca Farms, Inc. and T. J. Dickey. Tracy Hebert was the

SEPT 8, 2012 Auburn, WA Kubinova sets apprentice record with 71st win; Bear Creek goes coast-to-coast in feature Only five days after the first anniversary of her first mount, Eliska Kubinova went into the record books at Emerald Downs. The 23-year-old Kubinova broke the single-season record for wins by an apprentice jockey when she rode Fist Full of Green to a gate-to-wire victory in the third race. It was her 71st win of the meeting, one better than Cassie Papineau’s former mark of 70 set in 2009. The longest shot on the board in the $25,000 optional maiden-claiming race, Fist Full of Green ran 6-½ furlongs in 1:16.05 and paid $21.20. Roy Lumm trains and co-owns the Bertrando gelding with Mort Robbins and James and Linda Kirschman. A Native of Jesenik in the Czech Republic, Kubinova’s rise has been meteoric. She notched her first victory September 10, 2011 at Emerald Downs, and then had a sensational winter at Portland Meadows to finish second with 60 wins—including a six-win day on March 7. Only Juan Gutierrez and Leslie Mawing have more wins at the 2012 Emerald Downs season, and Kubinova still has seven racing days to pad her record. Incidentally, her apprentice weight allowance runs through the end of the meeting. Humble and soft-spoken, Kubinova said she was happy to set the record, and credited horsemen and fans for their season-long support. In a recent Seattle Times interview, she also said boyfriend and fellow jockey Jorge Rosales has been a big help, especially critiquing films of her rides. “He always gives me a hard time,” Kubinova said. “He’s been

SEPT 30, 2012 Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA Flame N Flash joins Champion of Champions field
How good is Robert Williams’ 3-year-old filly Flame N Flash? We’ll get a final determination in the next few months after she defeated older females in the Grade 1, $150,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap for fillies and mares on Sunday night at Los Alamitos. Flame N Flash now points to the Los Alamitos Super Derby to challenge the west coast’s premier three-year-olds and then has a berth in the Grade 1, $750,000 Champion Of Champions by virtue of her win in the Mildred Vessels. The way she ran in the important Mildred Vessels she could earn a championship title and she’s in the hunt with more important races against males in her future. With Francisco Rubio aboard, Flame N Flash got the jump on her competition at the start and then clearly showed she was the best horse in the race while scoring the one-half length victory. She was timed in :19.549 for the 400 yards. This Mauro Eli Zaborowsky’s Thisfeatureissppecial was second and it was another one-half length back to favored thirdplace finisher Fredaville. Flame N Flash was given a rest this summer by trainer Juan Aleman to point to this fall campaign after proving to be one of the better members of her division. The daughter of Walk Thru Fire qualified for the Ed Burke Futurity and then won the Los Alamitos Two Million Juvenile last year. She showed she was ready to take another step forward this year at Los Alamitos when she was a close fourth, just a neck behind Kobe, in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and then defeated sophomore fillies in the La Primera Del Ano Derby on April 6 before her layoff.

Garrett Gomez to the lead in the Grade 2, $150,000 John Henry Turf Championship at 1 ¼ miles and never looked back, wiring a nine-horse field by 2 ¼ lengths while getting the distance in 1:59.17. “Simon (trainer, Callaghan) wanted me to be laying close with him, if not, then just off the horse on the lead,” said Gomez. “Today he was fresh and he really caught me unexpectedly… I had trouble getting him to settle into a good stride. He kind of just pulled me around there and stretched me out pretty good, but he still finished well and that’s a plus. “We’ll regroup and hopefully be ready for the Breeders’ Cup.” Slim Shadey carved out interior fractions of 24.02, 46.92, 1:10.53 and 1:34.44. Off as the second betting choice at 3-1, he paid $8.40, $3.80 and $3.40. Trained by Callaghan and bred in England by his owner, Phil Cunningham, Slim Shadey’s run in the Eddie Read came just two weeks after he had run fifth as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 1, 1 3/8 miles turf United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park, leading Callaghan to characterize “Slim Shadey’s Del Mar effort as “flat,” which resulted in the freshening that preceded the John Henry. Callahan said that Slim Shadey’s next start will come

Music of My Soul
In a dramatic twist, Alhadeff, grandson of Longacres founder Joe Gottstein, served as honorary steward for the race named in honor of his grandfather. “I want to give credit to my grandfather,” Alhadeff said in a jubilant winner’s circle. “He believed in Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbred racing and Washington-breds. The horse did it, but it was fueled by the music of my soul.” A Washington-bred by Harbor the Gold-Julia Rose, Music of My Soul is named after a song in the hit musical “Memphis”, produced by Ken Alhadeff and his wife Marleen. So the victory was important to the Alhadeffs on several levels. The victory, however, looked like a long shot after Finallygotabentley made a withering, threewide move into the lane and gained a short lead. Moreover, Music of My Soul had done most of the heavy lifting, dueling with Mike Man’s Gold through fractions of :23.04, :45.48 and 1:10.75. But showing the type of resilience that made his big brother famous, Music of My Soul roared back on the inside, and the final furlong was a two-horse match race with Music of My Soul prevailing by a half-length. “I knew the two horses to beat were Finallygotabentley and Mike Man’s Gold,” Mawing said. “When (Finallygotabentley) came up on our outside, my horse eyed
him right away and dug back in. My horse was running fast the whole way, I just didn’t want to stop his momentum. I knew this horse was game. He didn’t want to lose today.” Finallygotabentley, ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 120 lbs, paid $2.40 and $2.10 for place and show. The son of BernardiniSmarty Deb just missed winning the race his mother won in 2007, and now has two seconds and a third in three stakes races. Imahit posted his second straight win this season for owner Clint Gilchrist of Edmond, Okla. and trainer C.R. Trout. Owned by Kelly Thiesing of Alva, Okla. and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Lady Jensen sat back behind many front-running types under Luis Quinonez, biding her time before beginning her rally. “I knew I was going to take her back,” Quinonez said. “It looked like they were going fast. I just had to ride her. We got a good trip, every time I needed a 44 SureBet RacingNews.com, Inc. • October 2012 • Vol. 6 No. 45

place to go I had it and was able to keep her going all the way to the wire.” Quinonez left his rail run with a quarter-mile left in the race. He calmly angled Lady Jensen through a seam in the traffic, never suddenly altering her motion or compromising her momentum. Once in the stretch, she cruised by Flatterific who took over the lead at the start of the turn. Lady Jensen crossed the finish 4-1/2 lengths in front of Flatterific, stopping the clock in 1:23.48. Ocean Ahumin was another 1-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up in third. Away at 8-5 in the betting, Lady Jensen paid $5.20 to win, $3 to place and $2.60 to show. Flatterific paid $4.40 to place and $3.80 to show. Ocean Ahumin paid $11.40 to show. The Te Ata score was the third from seven lifetime starts for Lady Jensen, a gray 3-yearold filly by Bob And John from the Gate Dancer mare Heather’s Dancer. Bred in Oklahoma by her owner, Lady Jensen made $30,000 in the Te Ata to run her earnings to $76,663. Te Ata was a master Chickasaw entertainer and storyteller who performed for over 70 years before royalty in Europe and Presidents of the United States. She lived to be 100 years of age. The win on Lady Jensen moved Quinonez back into a tie

Veterinarians Can Prove It. Horsemen Can See It. TM
When CalDensity® was launched in July 2007, research had shown fundamental changes were found evident in as little as 60 days. Frankly, it sounded too good to be true and for many the investment seemed unreasonable. Since then, horsemen and veterinarians have been investigating the impact of CalDensity®. Horsemen have evaluated everything they can observe and veterinarians have meticulously scrutinized over x-rays.
‘‘
CalDensity is the primary product I recommend to our surgical patients to ensure a rapid return to training and racing as well as it’s continued use to maintain soundness post surgically. — Tommy Hays, DVM, Elgin Veterinary Hospital

“Llano Teller has been a iron horse for us and I give a lot of credit to the Black Label CalDensity he has been on since weanling.”
