WELCOME

It’s our oft-repeated mantra that song is the common currency of the many musical styles that we present at Southern Fried, and this year’s line-up is our best to date - and that’s saying something! Our headline sextet - Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Iris DeMent, Graham Nash, Darrell Scott and Gretchen Peters - would all figure in any list of the greatest songwriters alive and we’re very, very proud to host them in Perth this summer. We always try to ensure our headline shows are Scottish exclusives and that’s the case again this year, but we’ve gone one better with our Rodney Crowell/Iris DeMent double bill, Darrell Scott’s afternoon concert in Perth Theatre and Gretchen Peter’s closing show all being one-off European shows. Our line-up of ticketed shows highlights the strength of the UK’s Americana music scene with Yola Carter, The Wandering Hearts, Worry Dolls and Dean Owens all featuring as well as Perth’s

Red Pine Timber Co. We’re delighted to partner with the Americana Music Association UK again to showcase five of their member artists across our programme of free gigs. Local people can join Southern Fried Voices and perform with Blue Rose Code and The Bevvy Sisters. Southern Fried Rock Shop will, once again, be bringing in visiting artists in the week leading up to the festival to work with young people, who will open the Outdoor Stage on Saturday and Sunday. Rock Shop graduates Longstay will be launching their debut album released on Perth’s Goldrush Records - as part of the main programme. We look forward to seeing you in Perth and sharing a wonderful weekend of world-class music, fantastic food and great company.

STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES THE MASTERSONS Three-time Grammy Award recipient and 11-time Grammy nominee Steve Earle is a cornerstone artist of Americana music. One of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation; he has released twenty albums - a number of them with his iconic band, The Dukes - and his songs have been recorded by such music legends as Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Carl Perkins, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill and Joan Baez. His body of work stands comparison with any artist of the last century in its depth, breadth, variety, and emotional and political fearlessness.

For the last seven years, The Mastersons husband-and-wife duo Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore - have kept up an inexorable touring schedule, performing as both the openers for Steve Earle and as members of his band, The Dukes, in addition to playing their own relentless slate of headline shows and festivals. It was Earle, in fact, who pushed the duo to record their acclaimed debut, Birds Fly South, in the first place. www.themastersonsmusic.com

WHISKEY SHIVERS

LONGSTAY

THU 26 JUL: 11PM SALUTATION HOTEL

£15; CONCESSIONS £12.50 (INC £1.50 BOOKING FEE PER TICKET)

WHISKEY SHIVERS A diverse group of masterfully talented musicians who stand out like a sore thumb from the traditional bluegrass world, Whiskey Shivers have made a name for themselves with a genre-pushing sound that NPR described as ‘frenetic bluegrass’ with a ‘punk spirit’. Whiskey Shivers shows are always a sight to behold. Barefoot, sleeveless and sweaty, frontman and fiddle master Bobby Fitzgerald never stops smiling on stage as the band tears into their stringed instruments at breakneck speed. Whether they’re playing at a backyard house party, a punk-rock dive bar or a sprawling music festival, crowds have no choice but to take notice and get involved. ‘the fierce inertia of Old Crow Medicine Show, the ramshackle folk punch of Felice Brothers and the punk energy of a pre-sobriety Deer Tick’ Rolling Stone ‘Bluegrass-fuelled Americana for a generation that grew up listening to punk rock’ Washington Post

45

LONGSTAY Still unfeasibly young given their huge talent, Perth’s Americana upstarts Longstay are graduates of Southern Fried Rock Shop who blend their high-octane take on country classics along with brand new original material from their highly anticipated debut album, Calling Me Home, which they launch at this show. Drawing on songs and inspiration from acts like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson through to current artists such as Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell, these boys will rock you any way you feel. As the latest manifestation of Perth’s lengthy love affair with what we now know as Americana, it’s entirely fitting that the album is produced by the band’s mentor, Gav Munro of Red Pine Timber Co., and released on Goldrush Records, run by John Thomson of the famed record shop and a pioneering live promoter who first brought iconic songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Mickey Newbury and Steve Young to the Fair City many years ago. www.longstayband.com

RODNEY CROWELL IRIS DEMENT FRI 27 JUL: 7.30PM PERTH CONCERT HALL

£32.50: CONCESSIONS £30 (INC £1.50 BOOKING FEE PER TICKET)

RODNEY CROWELL

IRIS DEMENT

Fifty years after Crowell first started playing as a teen in Houston garage bands, he has moved into elder-statesman territory. His songs have been recorded by country legends such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and George Strait and artists such as Etta James, Van Morrison and Bob Seger.

Iris DeMent was born in 1961 in rural Arkansas, the youngest of 14 children. She grew up singing gospel music but was also exposed to country, folk, and R&B.

On his latest album, Close Ties, Crowell both demonstrates his strengths as a songwriter and illustrates how he has learned to balance personal recollection, literary sophistication, and his profound musical reach. It’s at once his most intimate record and his most accessible and has been rightly acclaimed as one of his very best. ‘a poignant and emotionally affecting portrait of one of American music’s most captivating, talented and honest artists’ American Songwriter ‘age seems to have deepened his poetic faculties, these rootsy narratives scarred by experience, but all the richer for it’ Uncut (9/10)

DeMent first began composing songs at the age of 25 and released her debut album, Infamous Angel, in 1992 to universal acclaim. The stunning My Life and the hard-hitting The Way I Should soon followed to equally positive reactions. In 1999, she recorded four knockabout duets for singer-songwriter John Prine’s In Spite of Ourselves album, earning a second Grammy nomination. 2004’s gospel collection Lifeline was eventually followed by Sing The Delta in 2012, her first album of original material in 16 years. The Trackless Woods, an album of Anna Akhmatova poems set to music was released in 2015 to a very warm reception. A huge hit on her previous visit in 2011, Iris DeMent very rarely visits the UK and this is an unmissable chance to see a true American original. www.irisdement.com

If ever someone was deserving of his nickname “Crazy Legs”, it is Gordie MacKeeman. His thrilling dance style, while simultaneously playing the fiddle, mixes with great close-harmony bluegrass vocals, Peter Cann’s blistering guitar solos, and the lively multi-instrumental talents of Thomas Webb and Jason Burbine. www.gordiemackeeman.com

WORRY DOLLS

RED PINE TIMBER CO.: 12.15AM Red Pine Timber Co’s winning blend of Americana, country, soul, blues and southern rock has rightly earned them a formidable reputation as a truly great live act. The great reception given their new album Sorry For The Good Times confirms their arrival as a great studio outfit too. Even more than the sum of its many talented parts, Red Pine boast a magnetic front pairing of songwriter Gav Munro and the fabulous voice of Katie Whittaker. The band’s trump card is their imaginative brass arrangements, which create an utterly unique sound, adding great depth and soul to an already combustible mixture. www.redpinetimberco.com

Eli West is a Seattle-based acoustic musician. WORRY DOLLS: 12 MIDNIGHT

Worry Dolls are one of the UK’s most talkedabout Americana acts. They met in Liverpool, moved to London to pursue their career as a duo and recorded their acclaimed debut album, Go Get Gone, in Nashville. www.worrydollsmusic.com

BLUE ROSE CODE In the space of only a short few years and three stellar albums, Blue Rose Code, Edinburgh-born Ross Wilson, has gone from obscurity to being celebrated as a legacy artist whose work stands alone. Touring almost constantly, he pays his dues the old-fashioned way, changing line-up and arrangement of songs depending on the requirements of the show.

THE BEVVY SISTERS A lusciously harmonious marriage of vintage Americana and classy original songwriting, The Bevvy Sisters’ sound centres on the spellbinding vocal chemistry between singers Heather Macleod, Gina Rae and Louise Murphy. Guitarist David Donnelly completes the core quartet.

‘Wilson’s song writing is fantastically varied, and as witty and knowing on the one hand as it can be heart-breaking and sentimental on the other’ The Herald

‘they glide through their own songs and covers of blues, jazz, soul and country with sparkling accuracy and affection, soul and fun. The covers they perform are reworked with originality and passion as if the songs were their own’ Broadway Baby

AMYTHYST KIAH From Johnson City Tennessee, Amythyst Kiah describes herself as a Southern Gothic, alt-country blues singer-songwriter whose influences span decades and diverse styles. Combining rhythm and blues, country and old-time covers alongside startling originals with an angular contemporary twist, she bestrides both the antique and the modern with complete authority. Recent performances in the US, where her star is very much on the rise, include special guest slots with Rhiannon Giddens, Indigo Girls, Old Crow Medicine Show and Valerie June. www.amythystkiah.com

Gretchen Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, George Strait, and many others and was recently inducted into the hallowed Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has also now firmly established herself as an artist in her own right, especially in the UK where her new album Dancing With The Beast, the follow-up to Top 40 hit Blackbirds, reached No. 3 in the charts cementing her status as a major star and one of the finest songwriters on the planet. In this completely unique one-off show, Gretchen will perform songs selected by fans during the first half and will then be joined by a string quartet, led by Patsy Reid, for the second half. “It’s a very special and rare thing for me to play my songs with a string section - there’s a magic that happens with strings that elevates the music like nothing else. And I’m so looking forward to playing fan favourites by request - no doubt it will involve dipping into my back catalogue, which spans thirteen albums and twenty-two years now. It’s going to be a really incredible evening.” www.gretchenpeters.com
