Spencer Behind the scenes with

Leading dressage rider Spencer Wilton enjoys a successful Premier League debut with Super Nova and Doogie, and teams up with Jay Halim for a starring role in front of the camera!

I

’m writing this from our first Premier League show at The College Equestrian Centre in Keysoe, Bedfordshire, where we’ve come with Neville [Super Nova] and Doogie for three days of competition – and the good news is we’ve got off to a flying start! I haven’t competed at a Premier League show for five years, but I really like them as it’s a good opportunity to be judged by a fresh pair of eyes. These shows usually have one or two international judges present, as well as several of our senior judges, such as David Trott and Nick Burton. It’s also good for the horses to get used to the bigger atmosphere and to have the chance to compete in several advanced classes over consecutive days. It’s Neville’s first time of stabling away overnight, but since he made his winning competition debut last month, followed by four outings in two weeks, his confidence has really grown. We tackled our Advanced Medium test on the first day and scored more than 68 per cent to be placed second in good company. He still felt a bit green and got a bit distracted, and sometimes felt like he forgot what he was doing, but I can honestly say that our regular dose of NAF Magic has made all the difference! Doogie was a star too and settled in well. We arrived the night before the competition in time to do the ‘arena walk’, which I decided to do with Neville in-hand with a pocketful of carrots. He had his eyes out on stalks as there was a lot to look at but, as we thought, he decided that the carrots were far more important than spooking, so the plan worked out very well. Doogie didn’t have the best preparation as last month he bumped his fetlock in the Doogie shows off his expressive paces in his Prix St Georges test

where he didn’t feel quite ‘with me’, I was so pleased with him and he scored more than 69 per cent, earning him second place. He’ll now have a quiet day before competing again, while Neville will tackle another Advanced Medium and, if all goes to plan, we might enter him in his first Prix St Georges test. Update: Super Nova won his second Advanced Medium and was placed sixth on his debut at Prix St Georges. Doogie was third in his Prix St Georges.

Lights, camera, action!

Supa Nova (aka Neville) wins his Advanced Medium test with more than 72 percent

Neville had his eyes out on stalks as there was a lot to look at, but decided that the carrots in my pocket were far more important than spooking!’ stable the day before we were due out at a competition. It swelled up badly, which meant he had to have two weeks of box rest, followed by five days of hand walking before resuming full training. Luckily, he picked up where we’d left off and didn’t lose any fitness, but it meant we only had 10 days to prepare for our competition! We did our first ever Prix St Georges test at Keysoe on the first day and he really did me proud. Although there were moments

Jay and I were recently approached by the marketing folk at Mitsubishi to feature in a 90-second commercial for Badminton Horse Trials, which proved a great experience. The filming took place in the dark in our indoor school under spotlights and featured lots of close ups, which meant riding right up next to the cameras. I decided it was a great opportunity for Neville to gain some experience and he really rose to the occasion showing off his fantastic talent for piaffe and passage, which was all filmed in slow motion and looked very atmospheric. Neville and Zamboucca have also been chosen as the faces of NAF products and recently enjoyed a photo shoot, which produced some stunning pictures – keep an eye out for them and you’ll see how much they both enjoy all the posing! I’ve been a fan of the company’s products for many years – people sometimes make the mistaken assumption that as a rider you are paid to endorse a product, but that’s not the case. I can honestly say I’m a great believer in their products and they would be my first on my shopping list.

About Spencer

After taking up dressage, he was based with Carl Hester and won the 1997 national dressage title on Dolendo. at the ready! Badminton Horse Trials has it all – world-class eventers, plenty of thrills and spills, and hundreds of trade stands. Carolyn Henderson takes a sneak peek at the shopping on offer this year…

B

adminton Horse Trials has a special magic. It’s the one every rider wants to win and, because it’s the first big event of the year, it sets the scene for the season. But they and their horses aren’t the only ones who’ll need stamina and dedication. For many, part of the attraction of this event is the shopping. With more than 270 individual sites and about 500 businesses represented in the Badminton shopping village, it really does have everything you need. Jane Tuckwell, the event’s assistant director, is in charge of the village and says there is always a waiting list of would-be exhibitors.

“One of the criteria for getting a site is how long an applicant has been waiting,” she says. “But that’s not all we look at. We need to have variety and the shopping village has got to fit with our visitors. A huge variety of people come to Badminton, of all ages and interests. Some will be looking for things that are reasonably priced as well as good quality, while others will be looking to buy more luxurious items. You won’t find any cheap tat at Badminton, but you will find value. If you’re lucky, you’ll even find a bargain. I often get people coming up at the end and saying, ‘You’ll never believe what I got this for...’” Putting the village together so there’s always another row you’ve absolutely got to look round is a skilled job. If the fencing in your field has seen better days, now may be the time to improve security Andrea McHugh reports

s spring turns to summer, many owners delight in being able to turn their horses out for the season. However, horses escaping from fields can cause serious injuries to themselves, property and people, particularly if they stray on to roads and become involved in a car accident, which can result in a hefty claim for damages. Taking a few minutes to check the fencing in fields can help to ensure the safety and security of horses, and potentially save money on expensive veterinary fees. Although the fencing in your paddock might have been adequate last year it may no longer meet your requirements, especially if you have acquired a new horse or are trying to keep a horse fit, slim and healthy by strip grazing the field. OntheMarket Equestrian properties we can all aspire to!

The ultimate in equine luxury Of course we all want a nice place to live, but for some of us the equine facilities on offer come higher up the wish list than our own accommodation. Top, and even luxury facilities can be all-important for the serious competitor, and the living accommodation on offer is often secondary to their needs. You need deep pockets to buy the stunning Uplands in Upper Lambourn, Berkshire – renowned for its links to horseracing – but the cost is surely worth it. It possibly boasts every equine facility as one of the finest training yards in the country. Just 15 miles from Newbury and 72 miles to London, this fabulous property standing in 233 acres has a six-bed Grade II listed farmhouse, annexe and outbuildings, four-bed cottage, offices, swimming pool, tennis court, 80 stables, indoor school, equine pool, three indoor horse-walkers, lunge ring and five-bed staff hostel. Plus paddocks, pasture, arable land, woodland, extensive schooling grounds with grass and two all-weather gallops. Situated in the heart of ‘The Valley of the Racehorse’, Uplands is probably the most historic training yard in Lambourn as it’s been the base for several successful trainers, including Fred Winter, and has the capacity to run a stud farm alongside if required.
