Knights’ day Potential “knights” travelled to Warwick for the inaugural amateur jousting tournament. Twelve participants battled it out at the Warwick International School of Riding, home of the Knights of Middle England stunt team, before Steve Fearnley from Reading was crowned the victor. The day also raised £250 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Appleby success The organisers of this year’s Appleby Horse Fair hailed it a success. Despite an estimated 25% increase in visitors, the number of arrests – 48 – was fewer than in previous years. The RSPCA also confirmed a reduction in the number of verbal warnings its 31 officers issued.
Spillers help Feed manufacturer SPILLERS® will sponsor the British Dressage medium freestyle championships at next year’s winter finals. Fire tragedy Six horses died in a fire at the stables of Australian-born American eventer Boyd Martin. Early reports blame an electrical fault for the fire, which firefighters spent two hours getting under control. Boyd’s World Games ride Neville Bardos is among the horses being treated for burns.
FEI awards This year’s FEI awards acknowledge outstanding achievement in five categories: Reem Acra Best Athlete; HSBC Rising Star; Development; Against All Odds and Best Groom. The winners will be flown to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the awards ceremony at a VIP gala dinner in November.

HSBS will sponsor Pony Club eventing training for a third year. The programme comprises specifically designed training days conducted by top trainers and HSBC is also giving the winners and runners-up in the open and intermediate team classes at the Pony Club Championships the chance to attend a bespoke training day with William Fox-Pitt, Mary King and Harry Meade. Giles Morgan, HSBC Group head of sponsorship, said: “HSBC has been a proud sponsor of The Pony Club since 2009 and is delighted to continue to support up-and-coming talent in this fantastic sport.” There are 19 dressage, show jumping and cross-country days scheduled across Britain.
Pony rescued by council Driver ‘thought A pony that became a worldwide Internet sensation after being caught on camera being led onto a train has been taken into the care of the local council. Joe Purcell, 68, tried to take Ruby on board a train, to the hospital and into a pub in Wrexham. Mr Purcell, who divides his time between traveller sites at Wrexham and Ellesmere Port, suggested Ruby filled the role of guide dog when he had had too much to drink and also claimed he kept her for his five-year-old autistic grandson. A spokesperson for Wrexham council said: “A Welsh pony was taken to a place of safety by council officers assisted by the RSPCA. Complaints have been received from the public over the animal’s welfare.”

A rider was injured and her horse killed after a collision with a car driven by an 80-yearold man. David Herridge drove his Vauxhall Corsa car into the horse in November last year. He carried on with a smashed windscreen and told his neighbour he had hit a tree. He was fined £215 at Central Devon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was also banned from driving.
Cotswolds guide published The BHS has published The Cotswolds On Horseback, the most recent of its series of trail guides. The routes were launched as part of an Access Week ride attended by 20 riders and other participants in the project. This is the first publication to feature additional information on the BHS’s EMAGIN website. The
printed pack comprises eight routes with maps and directions, and more than 14 additional routes are available free online. EMAGIN also features a directory of local businesses and services. The 2011 NPS/TopSpec Dressage Championships at Addington Manor were once again a huge success. The supreme title went to Olivia Hoyland and the 11.2hh Welsh section A Sunwillow Gundegai, who wowed the judges with their brilliant performance to Cat Scratch Fever. Owner Caroline Bell said: “This has certainly sealed their partnership. We couldn’t ask for a better rider for Ollie.”
Hertfordshire couple Helen and Daniel Smith have won a riding holiday in Botswana in November, courtesy of In The Saddle and Ariat. Helen said: “This is something I’ve always dreamed of. I really can’t believe my luck.”

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) is to sponsor the Festival of British Eventing for the sixth consecutive year. More than 50,000 visitors will flock to Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire (5-7 August), where BETA is also supporting the Pony Club team show jumping. The BETA Trade Pavilion will once again play host to RoboCob the mechanical horse, while there will be a prize draw for a hamper of horse-and-rider equipment worth £2,000. Riders killed in accidents A rider suffered fatal head injuries after her horse was spooked by a quadbike in November last year, an inquest heard. Sandra Harvey, 67, of Talgarth, near Brecon, Powys, died eight days after the incident. She was on an early-morning ride with her sister down a narrow unclassified lane when farmer David Evans approached them at 15mph on a quadbike pulling a trailer. www.horsedeals.co.uk

Breeder helped World Horse Welfare is working with breeder Evan Lloyd Evans over the welfare of ponies at his Criccieth Stud in North Wales. Field officer Tony Evans visited the stud and a number of ponies were signed over. Tony said: “Many Internet allegations have proved unfounded. It’s great that the public is so passionate about the welfare of horses but we must be sure of the true facts.”
Number one Olympic show jumping champion Eric Lamaze is Rolex world number one for the third time in his career. The Canadian overtook Frenchman Kevin Staut, who had topped the list since August 2010. British-based Irish rider Billy Twomey is in third place.

Grandmother Josephine “Joe” Davies, 47, was riding a new horse that reared then bucked. She died after the fall. aultless” and “the best show I’ve ever been to” were just two comments from riders and spectators after this year’s Charles Stanley Masters international show jumping event. When the Masters lost its original venue of Chester Racecourse it looked as though it wouldn’t happen, but the Britton family and their team at South View Equestrian Centre were determined to save this flagship show for the north-west. At extremely short notice, they pulled off a minor miracle and were rewarded by huge crowds, while even the weather played its part through a weekend of glorious sunshine. They produced a show that was simple and friendly, but also fulfilled all the FEI’s requirements for international sport. There was little intrusive security and riders and spectators mingled happily, giving the event a family atmosphere. The jumping was also out of the top drawer, with Peter Gillespie’s courses adding to the occasion. Everyone watching knew they were in for a treat after the first class, the Horse Deals two-phase, in which Britain’s best vied for the honours – and they also had the chance to see John Whitaker’s former Olympic ride Peppermill, now recovered from injury and looking as good as ever. It takes a special performance to hold off local rider Keith Shore and that’s exactly what Guy Williams produced on
Orage. The chestnut mare produced a “blink and you’ll miss it” round to give Britain’s number one the perfect start to his show. After that, the standard never dropped and Britain’s top pony riders, whose classes were added to the schedule after their European trials show due to be run at another venue was cancelled, had the chance to watch and learn from the best. The show culminated in a grand prix day, where lady riders on mares took the top honours. The entertainment started with a win for young rider Carian Scudamore on Angel III in the Bilton Ward Developments small grand prix. Carian rode the little daughter of Baloubet du Rouet to the 2009 junior European title but Angel has since been off through injury. She proved her wellbeing here in no uncertain terms with a fabulous jump-off round. The title of Charles Stanley Master went to the USA through Laura Kraut and the chestnut mare Tierra. They flew round a sizeable jump-off track to demote John Whitaker, who was left ruing the longer route he took after he thought Argento had lowered a pole. Third place in the Masters on Mr Darcy was enough to make Yorkshireman Joe Clayton the show’s leading rider. Joe, who was celebrating his selection for the young rider European Championships, drove away a Mitsubishi L200 to use for a year, courtesy of the Grenson Motor Company. Tel: 01733 468000

ot so many years ago, few people would have thought of building stables indoors. A stableyard was an outdoor area, with looseboxes usually built around a courtyard. Now, more and more equestrians are opting for the ease of stabling in Americanstyle barns, where everything is under one roof. But some are still sticking to the old style and most stable construction companies find there’s a demand for both. For commercial customers and professional competitors, the advantages of an American barn far outweigh anything else. With Britain’s unpredictable weather, for them, indoor stabling wins hands down, and, quite honestly, staying dry while heavy rain pours down outside is a plus for anyone. “From a practical point of view, American barns make more sense in the extremes of British weather,” says Barbara Fill of Monarch Equestrian, a West Midlands-based family company with 46 years’ experience of manufacturing stables and ancillary equipment. “Some external timber stables can get very hot in the summer, while blockwork stables are

cold in winter. Our barns offer excellent ventilation and are cool in summer, while strong wind and driving rain outside can be simply shut out. It’s also cost effective to have everything under one roof.” One downside is that planning permission for American barns can prove more difficult to obtain because of the bigger footprint, but many stable companies relieve customers of this headache by dealing with the planning authorities as part of the package. “Some people struggle to obtain planning approval because a big barn doesn’t fit in with the surroundings, especially if it’s a private house and the stables are nearby,”

explains Barbara. “Monarch also supplies looseboxes and a traditional outdoor yard can appear more aesthetically pleasing to planners.” Other stabling companies are in agreement. “Generally, planning approval has a bearing on choice,” says Zoe Dolan of Scotts of Thrapston in Northamptonshire, which offers a flexible bespoke service to suit every individual and free preparation of planning applications and site drawings as part of the package. “Large barns have a greater input on the landscape and are only suited to a more rural area, but the concept of everything under one
roof appeals to most people,” she adds. Hancox Equestrian is a family business established 15 years ago and based in Bedworth, Warwickshire. Known for a wide range of internal stables at the top end of the market and also for supplying a full range of accessories, including lunge pens, Hancox is just breaking into the timber frame loosebox market. “Conservation areas and neighbours can influence planning decisions,” says Neil Hancox, “but costs also come into it. A private individual requiring two or three looseboxes needn’t go to the expense of a big barn.” Hancox can supply traditional looseboxes in
various forms, from straight runs to C or U shapes and courtyard designs. “The traditional yard is much more in keeping with the country house, but when it’s raining, you will get wet!” points out Neil. “Barns are much more manageable.” Hancox American barns come in a portal frame construction, which is easily adaptable. “The indoor stables can be unbolted and dismantled and the barn then used for another purpose,” explains Neil, who also points to the security benefits. “Everything – including washbox, feed and tackrooms – is under one roof, making it not just easier to work, but also safer, as it’s all under one lock and key.” Neil insists safety for the horses, as well as the riders and grooms, comes first and foremost. “We’re a horse-orientated company and safety’s all-important, then we consider the practicalities,” he says. “Windows and ventilation are also very important for horses’ health.” International show jumpers Steven Whitaker and his daughter Ellen have both types of stabling at their Yorkshire base. “We live on an old-fashioned farm, so we have stables here, there and everywhere,” explains Steven, who incorporated the old-fashioned brick-built stables with hay barns above with a newer barn construction housing indoor stables, a washbox and horse spa.

Woodlander Dornroeschen Lynne and Dave Crowden’s British-bred Hanoverian Woodlander Dornroeschen has already produced what they refer to as a “life-changing” horse in the unbeaten Farouche, but Dornroeschen herself is certainly no back number when it comes to performance. The nine-year-old daughter of Dimaggio out of a mare from the motherline of the great dressage stallion Florestan was a champion as a three-year-old and has since won at a high level in the dressage arena with Michael Eilberg, including taking the national advanced medium title. She is now flying the flag for Woodlander Stud with great success at international shows. She and Farouche scored a family double at Wellington Riding in June when Farouche took the international five-year-old qualifier, scoring 49 out of 50, and Dornroeschen won a prix st Georges section. Dornroeschen had 18 months away from the ring to produce Farouche, but embryo transfer has since enabled her to stay in competition and she now has a foal due by the young stallion

Fresh Direct Corlato Just before we went to press, John Bosher’s great Germanbred mare Fresh Direct Corlato gave birth to her first foal, a colt by Quainton Stud’s young stallion Quirifino Quainton Z. Quirifino, by Quidam de Revel out of a Grosso Z mare, also show jumps at five-star level, so if talent and bloodlines count for anything, this foal should be a special one. Corlato went to Tim Stockdale as a five-year-old and they were among the most consistent combinations in international show jumping over the past few years – including making a fairytale comeback from a horsebox crash, then a fall at the water jump in Lisbon that left Tim with broken ribs and Ruby with a cracked shoulder. But this tough 17.1hh mare bounced back in typical fashion and made Tim’s dream of an Olympic appearance come true in 2008, when she was the highest placed British horse individually.

However, a serious tendon injury in 2009 when competing at Spruce Meadows in Canada led to Ruby’s retirement. “What made Ruby special is that she always rose to the occasion. She was incredibly careful and never wanted to touch a fence, but like many mares, she could also be stubborn,” said Tim, adding that Ruby often refused to load and on one memorable occasion when she refused to be loaded onto a plane, the travelling crate had to be dismantled and rebuilt around her. Ruby’s bloodlines are full of champions. She is by Corofino I, a stallion who received 10 for jumping at his four-year-old performance test and later jumped internationally with Italian Valerio Sozzi. Her dam carries plenty of Thoroughbred blood, as she is by Locato, a son of the Britishbred Ladykiller, who sired countless graded sport horse stallions in Europe.

ast year, a woman in Gloucestershire bought a horsebox advertised as being capable of carrying two horses. When she got it home, she discovered that the modifications to the former Post Office van meant it could have suffered a tyre blowout at any time. The seller, a director of a company no longer in business, was prosecuted by Gloucestershire County Council’s Trading Standards. It was a nightmare scenario that could have been much worse and highlights how important it is not only to make the right checks, but also to get specialist advice when buying a second-hand lorry. Thankfully, there are many respected people in the horsebox industry and plenty of honest private sellers. But there are also pitfalls: for a start, which category does the seller come into? This is important because it affects your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act. You have much more protection if you buy from a professional trader rather than a private seller and good companies rely on their name and reputation. But just as there are numerous people who sell horses regularly but profess not to be dealers, so there are those who sell horseboxes regularly, even if they only have one vehicle at a time on the market. Put the phone number into an Internet search engine and if it comes up regularly in adverts, draw your own conclusions. If a seller describes a business as a registered company, it must be registered at Companies House. All you have to do is log on to www. companieshouse.gov.uk, where you can type a name into its free search facility to discover whether a company is registered, has been dissolved or is in liquidation. Calling in an expert is an investment in terms of money and safety

First checks Take someone with you who might spot things you don’t Jon Phillips When you ring up about vehicle, get as much information as you can and make sure this can be backed up. This applies particularly to weight: an advert may claim that a box can take two 17hh horses, but you need proof of the payload. There are still horseboxes being sold that are on the weight limit the minute a horse is on board, let alone people and equipment.
Jon Phillips, managing director of the Organisation of Horsebox and Trailer Owners (www.ohto.co.uk), suggests that when you look at horseboxes for sale, you should carry out the checks listed below. These are just for starters — unless you have specialist knowledge, get a proper inspection done by a qualified consultant before handing over your money. “Take your time and remember the old saying Caveat Emptor or buyer beware,” advises Jon, who is also chairman of the Equifest show committee and whose sons, Jamie and Glenn, show hunters at top level. “Unless you’re really experienced and knowledgeable, take someone with you who might spot things you don’t.” the bodywork, cab floor and steps •forCheck rust. the tyres and exhaust. well looked after. If someone hasn’t looked after the basics, what else has been neglected or missed? Search for rot and damp patches on the floor of the vehicle. Make certain the ramp woodwork, hinges and balance springs are all sound and in good working order. Check that you can manage the ramp on your own! When you go to see the vehicle, make sure that the engine is cold and has not been started before you get there. Check that there are no oil leaks from the engine. Check that the oil warning light does not come on when the engine is started. Check engine speed and smoke emission when the vehicle is stationary. In the cab area, check that gauges, lights, indicators, wipers, horn and warning lights all work correctly and check the play of the steering wheel. Check the wiring for lighting areas in the living and horse areas and make sure they run from a separate battery — not the main vehicle battery. Check that the weight will not exceed legal limits when fully laden with your horses, tack, passengers and all supplies.
