2008 IALHA National Championship Horse Show October 13- 18 Fort Worth, Texas was once again the destination of choice for the Andalusian owners, trainers and breeders who work hard all year long toward the goal of competing at the IALHA National Championships. This year, the show was dedicated to three great ambassadors of the IALHA. Pedro Salas, one of the world’s most renowned breeders of the Andalusian horse and one of the first to compete on the IALHA circuits and Bunny and Eloise Pearl, who through their generosity and enthusiasm have contributed greatly to the association. Monday started the schedule off with a full slate of qualifying classes for those who wanted some extra time in the big ring or for those who, for whatever reason, had not yet qualified for the National show. Local judge, artist and novelist, the Honorable Helen Hogan officiated throughout the day in all divisions. Her enthusiasm for the breed and kind remarks were appreciated by all and especially some of our youth who were at their first Nationals. Tuesday marked a first in IALHA show ring history, when the day began “on the triangle” with the Dressage/Sport Horse in hand division in the W.R. Watt arena. The Honorable Mr. Thomas A. Poulin of St. Charles, Illinois made his choice from the entries shown as they calmly executed the required pattern at the walk and trot. The triangle is often used in Keurings and Inspections of other breeds as well as our own in Spain, Portugal and Brazil. The classes were very well received and promise to grow quickly in the future. Dressage performance classes began at 1:00pm in the John Justin Arena. National Champion rides flowed nicely all afternoon with USEF Steward and Technical Delegate Cindy Reid watching closely as Whizzer Baker managed the show with his usual expertise, despite the absence of his wife and business partner Kathi Baker, who had to stay home in Florida to recover from an emergency appendectomy. The whole staff of Four Winds West pitched in and filled all the gaps with Kathi available by phone and e-mail throughout the week. 14

The very successful and well attended clinic schedule began Tuesday with “Complete Show Grooming” by Dave and Gloria Hennen of Kir Aim Andalusians, also the recipients of the IALHA Breeder of the Year for 2008. Wednesday morning started with halter futurity classes for three year olds. Purses were very good this year with top-five purebreds taking home over one thousand dollars a piece. The extra money these classes offer is just an added bonus to the breeders who have invested so much already in time, resources and emotion in the business of breeding horses. More National Championship Halter classes filled the morning and afternoon as well as another great clinic by Bruce Howard and Francine Dismukes on starting the Show and Traditional Carriage Driving Horse and Marc and Lisa Cardinaels from El Sueno Espanol on Native tack and Attire. The Wednesday evening session began with a parade of the Dressage Champions from Tuesday. The elegant riders and their equine partners turned out one last time to cherish their victories in bright white wraps and polished boots and tack. Rick Osteen was on hand to capture all the show’s moments with his camera while Lavoy Shepards video team, Classic Video, did the same in motion and sound. National Championship performance classes followed the Parade in many divisions for both the purebred and half-bred horse. None of these classes could have been offered without the many generous Patrons and Sponsors who gave freely so as to ensure a successful event. John Brown of Bradenton, Florida was the driving force behind the great response we had in Patron fund raising this year and for that we thank him sincerely! Thursday Brought us to the final Halter titles in the morning for the Purebred Junior and Senior Champion Mares and Stallions followed by the very popular Amateur to Handle classes where the owners get a chance to show off with their own or friends’ horses. Showmanship in Hand for our youth exhibitors was another first for the National Show that promises to grow quickly and will probably need an age
split in the not so distant future. This year’s entries did a remarkable job and are a great tribute to our association and their parents and trainers. Speaking of great trainers and the Youth of IALHA….Lauren LaVine, IALHA’s 2008 Horsewoman of the Year, followed in the afternoon with a most informative clinic and Q&A on Equitation for youth attendees while Bill and Diane Calderon of Iberian Connection gave their view and expertise on traditional tack and attire. Thursday evening’s session began with the Parade of Halter Futurity Champions taking their final victory lap and ensuring the world that the breed’s future is secure with such quality and talent in our young American bred horses. Competition was deep in all the evenings’ classes with special attention and recognition going to the Carriage Driving, Dressage Suitability and Liberty classes where the horses truly gave incredible performances. Friday’s clinics began with Ben Johnson on Equine Videography and Marketing. Owner of Ben There Marketing and an instrumental member of the IALHA web committee, his expertise was received very well by attendees. Vaughan Smith’s Halter training techniques were again very popular, as his methods are well proven by his great show ring success and the respect he receives by his peers, which this year resulted in him being named Professional Horseman of the Year. The rest of the day, people spent either visiting with the vendors and artisans on the mezzanine level or catching glimpses of victory passes on the arena floor, while some diehards seemed cemented to their seats as they watched intently from beginning to end, each session of classes. With the change in schedule this year, Friday night was the last chance to see an evening performance of show classes and eager spectators as the parade of National Grand Champions in Halter strutted their stuff to music and applause. High Point perpetual trophies were awarded in the arena throughout the show to the hard working horses and exhibitors who competed in many shows all over the country for the honor of taking one of the magnificent IALHA awards home. 15
Doug Shane and Nicho Meredith, our announcers and masters of ceremonies, informed people that the silent auction would close at noon and encouraged everyone to buy tickets for the raffle mare Nadia BA as the drawing would be that night. Nadia BA, donated by Paul and Gail Bricco had enchanted people all week with her liberty time in the arena and quiet time back at her stall, ensuring good ticket sales. The last of the clinics organized by Ronnie Marroquin took place Saturday afternoon. Kimberly Garvis, who has spent the past few years training and competing in Working Equitation in Brazil and has now returned to the United States with the goal of helping to establish the discipline here, presented a lecture on Working Equitation. As our newly elected Show Chair, Ronnie is working closely with Kimberly and others on the Show Committee to have comprehensive rules ready for this exciting new division by 2010. The show ended, so to speak at the beginning, as the very young Lead Line riders were accompanied into the arena on their trusted steeds by proud attendants. We hope that these early experiences will help encourage these young riders to return to the show ring again and again in the years to come.. Saturday Evening’s exhibitions of Andalusians and Lusitanos,”From Golega to Sevilla and Beyond” included a variety of presentations, exhibitions, and opportunities for those who had spent the week showing to relax and laugh together. .Champions from every division had the opportunity to come out to the arena for recognition, and Medieval Times came through once again to support the IALHA with their amazing acts. We are forever grateful for their historical and constant contributions. National Grand Champion Senior Stallion With quiet majesty, Andaluz-ANG surveyed his new kingdom, the chaos of the show ring with its’ flashing cameras, blaring music and noisy crowd left him unfazed. He was a gentleman and now a National Grand Champion, and he knew how to behave like both. “He’s a dream to work with,” says Warren Mather, who showed Andaluz at Nationals. “He has a great mind and he carries himself so well.” Jesus Villarreal, Andaluz’s owner, combed the fields and stables of southern Spain for 10 days before finding the colt. Villarreal was an admirer of Jocoso XXI and this 2-year-old colt out of Andaluza LXXIII, was just like his famous sire. With his regal bearing, wonderful movement and calm air of sophistication, Villarreal knew his search for a stallion was over. He brought the young horse home to J.V. Ranch in Boerne, Texas, and knew he had something special. It was only a matter of time until others would see it too. “I competed against Andaluz when he was a 4 –year-old,” adds Mather. “He was
National Grand Champion Senior Mare From the moment Di Amore’s hooves touched the ground, Ryan Prince realized two things: one, she wasn’t a stallion and two, she had National Champion written all over her. Ever since he was 8 years old, Prince’s dreams revolved around an Andalusian Stallion, but one look at this filly and his plans changed “I knew in my gut she was going to be a National Champion,” Prince says. “She had this amazing presence, a

regal bearing, like she was the princess and you should feel honored to be around her With her bloodlines, she had the right to feel like royalty, by Santiago and out of Kahlua, her relatives trace back to some of the finest Spanish lines including Legionario III . But life interrupted Ryan’s plans and, forced by circumstances beyond his control, he had to let Di Amore go. “I sold her when she was almost two,” explains Prince. “I kept track of her, saw her win the 2004 National Champion Country Pleasure Saddleseat Open class and I always wanted her back.” As fate would have it, Prince would get the chance to own Di once again and she would prove his instincts were right. Seeing her win National Grand Champion Senior Mare 2008 with Bruce Howard handling her, brought their journey full circle and even an injury wouldn’t keep Prince from seeing his girl earn her title. “I drove 2000 miles with a compression facture in my back to see her at Nationals. She’s such an amazing horse and she brought so many people together,” Prince says “ I’ve had so much help, I couldn’t have done it without Dave and Gloria Hennen, her breeder and trainers, Ray Freson and so many others. It was just a very special time.”

The Lusitano Comes of Age By Sarah Eakin The Lusitano, whose history is linked to bullfighting, the cavalry, past European royalty and the classical equitation of the Alter Real, has evolved to become a sought after modern day sport horse. Classical equitation performed throughout Europe formed the basis for dressage as performed at Grand Prix level. Today the Lusitano is well represented at international competi-

tion level. Witness seven Lusitanos entered for the dressage competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics representing Brazil, Portugal and Australia. “Recently rediscovered, the Lusitano horse has re-acquired the prestige it enjoyed in the past centuries as one of the best saddle horses in the world,” said Paulo Gavião Gonzaga, founder of Interagro Lusitanos of Brazil, the world’s largest breeder of the Lusitano horse. “The growing demand, however, cannot be fully satisfied by the still small numbers of horses and breeders around the world and this scarcity, combined with its high performance in competition, turned the Lusitano into one of the most desired sought after horses of the moment, explaining its standing as a symbol of status and prestige for its owners and trainers.” This recent evolution can be traced back to the 70s when the Lusitano horse was first imported into Brazil. Interagro was one of the pioneers of Lusitano breeding outside the breed’s native country of Portugal. The Interagro breeding program began with four mares and one stallion and in the ‘80s they upped the stakes bringing in a large shipment of Lusitanos from Portugal. Shortly after, the borders were closed for four years due to quarantine restrictions and no horses could be imported in to Brazil. At the time Dr Gonzaga was laying the foundations for the breed’s future outside its traditional roles. While the deep-rooted culture of the Lusitano remains revered and respected inside and outside of Portugal, it has also provided the ingredients to usher in a new era for the breed. “It was possible and we took the time to look really carefully for the good breeders and the good bloodlines that still existed in Portugal,” said Dr Gonzaga. “As soon as the ports were open, we imported about 70 mares (not all at once). At that time we had about 100 – the horses we had in Brazil were already producing and some mares came over pregnant. “Now we have about 600 horses. The season in Brazil is from August to June. Each year we have a new generation. So in March every year we have the highest number of horses. We have a fluctuation of about 100 more or 100 less. We always stay with a minimum of 600.” The Lusitano has recorded successes in many areas of modern-day equestrian competition, notably a team of Lusitano horses won the 1996 World Championship in the 'four-in-hand' class in Belgium, driven by Felix Brasseur and

owned by Jose Manuel de Mello, president of the Portuguese Lusitano Association. Peter Van Borst, is working with a team and a pair of Lusitanos, stemming from the Interagro bloodlines and owned by William Robinson of Robinson Lusitanos, Idaho. “We have high aspirations for them,” said Van Borst, who recently moved the Lusitanos to Aiken, South Carolina – traditional driving country that has taken interest in the recent arrival of the breed. “The Lusitano has a huge heart, great stamina, wonderful reflexes and impulsion because while you can play with the external appearance you can’t breed heart and intelligence so easily into a horse. That said, Interagro has the luxury of being able to put together a chemistry of bloodlines. “Interagro are also using the wonderfully diverse gene pool that they have to produce driving horses. We are hoping these horses we are working with now will bear witness to the fact that the Lusitano has the ideal characteristics for a competitive driving horse.” As the largest breeder of the Lusitano horse worldwide, Dr Gonzaga’s passion for the breed is clear, and his vision for their wider role as horses under saddle for both competition and amateur fulfillment is emerging. “You have a universe of amateurs and very few professionals,” he said. “This mass market is the amateur. They have difficulty mastering the Warmblood as they don’t have the character that the Lusitano has…” Still it has taken time for the breed to become recognized on the world stage. While in many ways the deep-rooted history of Lusitano breeding has fuelled its emergence as a universally talented horse, it has also dictated a conservative approach to its evolution. “The Lusitano is a very interesting breed,” said Dr Gonzaga. “It has a fascinating history and the breeders are proud of their lines. The first time the Lusitano appeared in dressage – it seemed almost culturally inadmissible because it was widely thought that Baroque was the only way that was valid.” Times have changed and doors are opening to the Lusitano horse. “The Lusitano can go to the Olympics but they can also be ridden by children,” explained Dr Gonzaga. “It is the best horse on which to learn to ride. Training with a Lusitano is much easier, much safer. It is a horse that can do everything a Warmblood can do but it’s easier to ride and cheaper too. They are very clever horses and they don’t forget. It takes much less time to teach them than other breeds. Lusitanos like people and they try to please you, which make them enjoyable for amateurs and 19
professionals alike.” Dr Gonzaga sums up the breed most adeptly in his book, O Cavalo Lusitano. “They are strong, vigorous horses, obedient, generous of character, agile, and articulate, elegant, distinct and arrogant, proud, lordly and noble of spirit; they are also docile, intelligent and submissive, easy to teach for every horse activity,” he wrote. “Such characteristics make the Lusitano the best saddle horse in the world.”

IALHA Youth Nominee for the USEF Youth Sportsman Award - Joanna Wayland Each year, the USEF asks each of its breed affiliates to nominate one outstanding youth for consideration for the USEF Youth Sportsman of the Year Award. These young people are invited to attend the USEF Youth Convention at the Annual Meeting and to participate in a summer seminar put on by USEF. The youth ultimately chosen as the USEF award winner is given a lifetime membership in USEF. This year’s IALHA nominee, Joanna Wayland, is a well-known fixture at Region 2 events; she recently had the opportunity to expand her circle of friends at the 2008 IALHA National Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. Youth Committee Chair Alison Cooper explained that she had been well persuaded by Joanna’s application, but was even more impressed when she met her in person, commenting on how humble Joanna was about her many accomplishments. One of the things that caught the attention of the IALHA Board, which selects each year’s nominee, was how much she had personally invested in her achievements. Joanna has
worked for years to pay board and upkeep on her horse (a BLM mustang mare expecting a half-Andalusian foal in February.) She has traded stall cleaning for the opportunity to learn, and has willingly shown Andalusians and HalfAndalusians for many Region 2 members to gain more experience in the show ring. She has won numerous awards with horses she has shown for IALHA owners Carla Shown, Joan Sciacca, Julie Alonzo, Ann Beaver, Cyndy Stephens-Winchell, and Pedro and Cindy Munoz Sanchez at shows hosted by the Northwest Andalusian Horse Association (NWAHA) as well as Canada’s Pacific Association of the Andalusian and Lusitano Horse (PAALH). Her involvement with IALHA is not limited to the show ring, however. In Region 2, Joanna has assisted with show preparation clinics for the past several years, alternating between demonstrating proper equitation and showmanship and serving as scribe for the clinician. In addition, Joanna has represented the IALHA at the Northwest Horse Expo three years running, presenting Andalusians for owners in the breed demonstration and helping to host the informational booth. In 2008, she joined forces with Alexa Volwiler, an IALHA member from Washington, to work on increasing youth involvement at Region 2 IALHA shows. The two presented a list of suggestions at the NWAHA general membership meeting in August, many of which will be adopted by the club this year. Reflecting on Joanna’s many strengths, Alexa commented, "Joanna is always kind and helpful. She is
proactive in supporting the breed and is a very devoted equestrian." In Texas, besides carrying the flag for the opening ceremonies on Thursday and Friday nights, Joanna won a Reserve National Championship Title in Western Equitation on Biaritz MC, owned by Alison and Susan Cooper; she showed Rancho Tres Potrillos’ Hilandero X in the senior stallion halter class. She also showcased her versatility by winning both the English and Western performance futurity classes on three-year-old stallion Armani LFA. Joanna was delighted when she learned that she had been selected as the IALHA’s nominee for the award. With a blush of excitement, she thanked the Board for their confidence in her and promised to do her best to be a good ambassador for our Association. Those who have had the pleasure of meeting her can offer their assurances; she’ll do us proud. Applications included a coversheet, four essays, three letters of recommendation, and a resume. This year, we were particularly impressed by the variety and strength of applications. To honor the six youth who submitted applications for this award, the IALHA Board voted to send each of them a free IALHA Youth or Associate membership for 2009. Youth are encouraged to look for information about the coming year’s award in the summer. was purchased by Tilley for her 60th birthday, after watching his video. Training and showing has been a collaborative effort by Glenn Wilson, Bill Deeney and Tilley. Xar Pei VO has just started driving and enjoys taking good care of Nadine on trails. Xar Pei’s first foal crop is due in 2009. The USC mascot program has been endowed by the Tilleys. Nadine says, “We’ve set it up so that the white horse Traveler must always be Andalusian. We always have 6 or 7 Traveler prospects in training.” At 61, Nadine’s dearest ambitions are not yet fully realized. “Every day I can enjoy horses and share the day with these horses is an accomplishment. I feel so blessed to have them in my life.”

The Year End Awards program recognizes the accomplishments of breeders and exhibitors. Recipients are nominated by their peers, and selected by the IALHA Show Committee. These awards take into account not only individual accomplishment in the show ring, but sportsmanship, service, and dedication to the breed. The winners are not necessarily those with the greatest accumulation of show points. Indeed, the awards serve as important recognition of the contributions of IALHA members that eclipse a mere point tally.

IALHA FUTURITY PROGRAM
DREAMS THAT COME TRUE Congratulations to all the 2008 IALHA Futurity winners who started planning for this moment in 2004. That’s when they looked at the mares they wanted to breed and carefully examined bloodlines and conformation. The next step was to review the available stallions and decide which one would (hopefully) help the mare produce the “perfect” foal. Breeding can be such an exact science and yet the results are in the lap of the gods. All you can do is breed the best to the best and hope for the best. The original IALHA Futurity nomination must be made and paid for by Dec. 31 of the year BEFORE the foal is born. This is when your mare looks like she swallowed a barrel and you can hardly wait for spring when the foal pops out. Waiting is the hard time. Is it a filly? Is it a colt? The next payment must be made by June 30 of the birth year of the foal. Only by now you know whether it’s a colt or a filly and if your dreams are coming true. Each of the IALHA Regional shows have Futurity classes for weanlings, yearlings and two-year-olds so you can show your pride and joy in the regular classes and the Futurity classes. Payments on the nomination are made by June 30 of each succeeding year. Suddenly, there you are with a gorgeous three-year-old in your barn planning a trip to the IALHA National show. This is the time that the rewards for a breeder’s
confidence become significant. ALL of the money generated from the nomination fees is put into a pot and divided among the winners of the Three-Year-Old Purebred Futurity Stallion, Mare and Gelding classes. Therefore, the amount the winners receive is directly decided by the number of horses nominated. This year the winner in each of the 2008 Purebred Futurity classes received $2006.60. The Reserve winners in each class received $1700.51 and each of the Top 5 winners in each class received $1100.33. If a Futurity nominated colt or filly is sold, the Futurity nomination can be transferred to the new owners. Then the new owners are eligible to show in the Futurity classes provided they keep up the nomination payments as scheduled. There are two separate IALHA Futurities. There is one for Purebreds and one for Half Andalusians. The rules and the nomination fees for each Futurity are the same. The payout for the winners of the Half Andalusian Futurity is decided by the number of Half Andalusians nominated. The 2008 winners of the Half Andalusian Stallion, Mare, and Gelding classes each won $983.41 and the Reserve winners each got $737.56. The rewards for the faith you have in your breeding program are great.

Rodriguez and Family Andres G Rodriguez has dreamt of owning his own Andalusian horse for thirty years and when the phone call came from IALHA National Horse Show manager Whizzer Baker he could not believe his ears. He bought just one ticket to win his dream horse and he and his family could not be happier or more excited. On Sunday morning, October 19,

Andres with his wife, two sons, his daughter-in-law and a grandchild took possession of his beautiful mare from breeders Gail and H. Paul Bricco of Wadsworth, Illinois. Andres said, “I have come to the show many times and in the past, the closest I came to owning one is that I sat in the next row to a lady that had the winning ticket a few years past,”

Andalusian Crosses: Not just a cross, but an awesome cross occasion is presented to them with bravery and honesty. When encountering new situations, they are more prone to stare at whatever is scaring them than to spook and run. Crossing a pony breed to the Andalusian can produce a very willing

Everyone knows of the wonderful characteristics of the Andalusian: beauty, brains, and athletic ability, but a lot of people do not know that these great qualities can be passed onto their HalfAndalusian offspring. What is a HalfAndalusian? Well, it is a foal with one registered purebred Andalusian parent. The IALHA considers a horse to be a purebred if it has one of the following bloodlines: Andalusian (S), Lusitano (P), or what is known a Pure Spanish-Portuguese (SP). The foal of two HalfAndalusians cannot be registered as a Half-Andalusian, although they might be able to be registered under other breed registries, so please be careful when looking to purchase a Half-Andalusian. Why a Half -Andalusian? Because Andalusian horses were the foundation stock in developing many modern breeds and crossing them back to these breeds produces the best of both worlds. HalfAndalusians goal in life is to please whatever human happens to be around them at the moment, whether it is when they are being ridden or when a small child is petting them. Half-Andalusians have been known to reach out their noses so as not to intimidate small children, while still allowing the child to pet them easily. Their awareness of their surroundings and the humans in their vicinity is amazing. They will rise to whatever 52
and accepting child or small adult’s mount. Crossing them to a gaited breed can produce a foal that possibly gaits with the temperament of an Andalusian, while crossing an Andalusian to a draft breed can reduce the size and girth of the draft, producing a large steady mount for any rider. When crossing these horses to Warmbloods, it can refine their looks ANDALUSIAN Issue 1, 2009
and create a horse that is more sensitive and easier to ride. Breeding Andalusians to lighter horses can produce wonderful sporthorses that excel in combined driving, eventing and dressage. HalfAndalusians are athletes in their own right, successfully competing in every type of equestrian competition. They can easily transition from the show ring into a wonderful children’s mount or a steady and willing teacher for even the most inexperienced rider. Half-Andalusians have successfully worked as therapy horses while providing the careful attention their special charges require. They are becoming more and more popular as the riding public recognizes their tremendous work ethic, athletic ability and lightness under saddle, not to mention their beauty. Often times, owners of Half-Andalusians were looking for a horse they could “really bond with” and these horses love having a special human although they are more than happy to work with many. The IALHA has developed a full roster of classes for HalfAndalusians to compete in at their shows. Many of the classes offered for purebreds are also offered for H a l f Andalusians. There may also be classes available for double registered horses to compete in; these registries can include, but are not limited to, the Azteca, Spanish Norman, Iberian Warmblood, Hispano-Arab and Warlander. If you are looking into breeding your favorite mare, please check into the purebred Andalusian stallions standing at stud. Often times, the fees to breed to a mare that is not a purebred Andalusian

approach, help with chores and, in general, just want to be with their humans. Many a time, a young foal will run to greet the humans at the gate leaving mom far
under saddle, if not later depending on how they are growing and developing. A Half-Andalusian can take a while to reach its full size, caution is recommended when deciding when they are ready to start full training. On a final note, a warning should be attached to these horses. Once you own one, a second one and possibly a purebred is in your future. One is never enough when it comes to these magnificent horses.
AZTECA is significantly less than the stud fee for a purebred mare. You might be surprised by how affordable it can be. The stud fees are set by each owner individually based on the stallion’s show history, bloodlines and other factors, but most of the time a mare owner can find a very nice stallion without mortgaging the farm. Half-Andalusian foals are very friendly and inquisitive; often times they act more like large dogs than horses. They will follow their owners around fields, whiny to them when they
behind. They are easily trained and love to learn new tasks and are amiable to most new things presented to them as long as they are treated with a kind and gentle hand. If started under-saddle gently, it is often an easy task to bring to them the polish of a finished show horse. It is commonly recommended to wait until they are at least three to start them
WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES COMES TO THE USA. Andalusian sponsor sought by Para Equestrian competitor. The World Equestrian Games is a unique championship consisting of eight equine disciplines held every four years in between the Summer Olympics. The WEG, as it is known, attracts World class competitors from 60 Countries as well as the US in the disciplines of Dressage, Jumping, Three Day Eventing, Endurance, Driving, Vaulting, Reining and, for the first time in 2010, Para-Equestrian In a recent conversation with the Para-Equestrian division of the USEF, I learned that one of their dressage riders is in need of an appropriate mount for this competition. They would be thrilled to have spon53
sorship of an Andalusian of that caliber for her to train with over the next two years and to compete with in 2010. The World Equestrian Games were first held in 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden and subsequent host cities have been The Hague, Netherlands, Rome, Italy, Jerez, Spain and Aachen, Germany. In 2010 the WEG will be hosted for the first time outside of Europe by Lexington, Kentucky, the Horse Capital of the World. Another first is that these games, held at the Kentucky Horse Park will be the only venue to accommodate all disciplines in one location. This Championship ANDALUSIAN Issue 1, 2009
Competition will be held from September 25 through October 10, 2010. The IALHA will be represented with a booth in the Breeds Pavilion. The Problem Mare By Cara Rothrock, BS, RPh Breeding season is right around the corner, so it is time to start planning, especially for those mares that ended last season empty. With the current economy, breeding efficiency is more important than ever, and we all know a “problem” mare is a huge financial drain. A “problem” mare is a mare that has difficulty getting in foal due to any number of factors including advancing age, irregular cycles, recurrent infection, and repeated pregnancy loss, to name a few. Regardless of the cause, good management increases your odds of producing a live foal, and detailed record keeping will be key. You also need to set realistic goals; the average pregnancy rate is in the 60% range under normal circumstances and drops dramatically for problem mares. Heading into the breeding season, you will want to make sure your mare is in good body condition, not over or under weight. Have your vet do a breeding soundness exam including a culture and biopsy to detect the presence of internal problems, and inspection of the external reproductive anatomy to determine if there are any defects that may decrease fertility. The mare should have established a good cycle with short heat periods and predictable ovulation before you attempt to breed her, and if there are abnormal results on the culture or biopsy, treatment options need to be discussed with your vet and implemented before attempting to breed the mare. To get your mare in foal, you and your vet must be able to acknowledge problems and formulate realistic solutions. If your mare’s external anatomy is abnormal (normally the opening of the vagina is perpendicular with a tight seal), the solution may be for your vet to perform a Caslick’s procedure to partially close the vaginal lips. This will block the entry of air and feces, thereby limiting the introduction of bacteria that 54
cause inflammation, irritation, and infection. An area that is often overlooked is breeding technique. In a problem mare, live breeding is not advisable due to several factors. Even with proper cleansing of the mare and stallion, higher amounts of bacteria enter the reproductive tract with live breeding than with artificial insemination (AI). All mares will have an inflammatory response to semen; generally, the difference between those that get pregnant and those that do not is the severity and duration of the inflammation. To reduce the response, a minimal amount of raw semen is used (500 x 106 progressively motile sperm) diluted with an antibiotic containing extender and inseminated using sterile technique. It is very important when cleaning both stallion and mare that water is used to clean the genitals of all debris without the use of soap. Soap residue, even in small amounts, is very toxic to sperm. Another area that sometimes goes without much thought is the use of lubricants for AI. Use an amount no larger than the size of a quarter; even non-spermicidal lubricants can adversely affect sperm motility. Some mares, regardless of how cleanly the AI is performed, will pool fluid in the uterus (this is visible by ultrasound exam). This fluid is toxic to sperm if it is present before breeding and toxic to the embryo if it persists after ovulation. A very useful procedure to manage a mare with this problem is to have your vet administer oxytocin about two hours before breeding and then again two hours after. Another procedure commonly used is large volume uterine lavage (1 to 2 liters) using a buffered ANDALUSIAN Issue 1, 2009
saline heated to 41o to 45o C, with or without the addition of an antibiotic, at least 12 hours before breeding, followed by the use of oxytocin. When deciding treatment options and breeding procedures, the main goal is to have

Progesterone is needed to maintain pregnancy, and when the mare does not produce enough on her own, she can be supplemented with Regumate to help her maintain the pregnancy. If you continue to have difficulty keeping your mare in foal, she may be a candidate for embryo transfer. Keep in mind not all problem mares are good candidates for embryo transfer; your best success will come from mares that can get pregnant but have difficulty maintaining the pregnancy. A successful breeding season is a combination of good management and teamwork with your vet to ensure your mare is not empty at the end. When you finally get that problem mare in foal, the reward makes the journey well worth it!
FIESTA OF THE ROYAL HORSE By Tara McWilliams A highlight of the Pacific Andalusian & Lusitano Horse Association’s (PAALH) IALHA-sanctioned Canadian National Show was the annual “Fiesta of the Royal Horse” held on Saturday evening, July 26. Since its inception four years ago, the Fiesta’s fame has been growing, playing always to a standingroom-only audience of approximately 2000 souls. This is a complimentary event; everyone is made welcome and donations at the door they are gratefully appreciated. People from all walks of life come from near and far to experience the beauty and versatility of our beloved Andalusians and enjoy the art and culture they represent, even if only for an evening. People love our Iberians, their rich and ancient history, and what they can do! The Fiesta featured Flamenco del Mar, a professional dance troupe, which performed in tandem with Salvador Martinez and his Andalusian stallion. Impressive! Another highlight included a beautiful musical pas-de-deux by Linda

deWilde Petersen riding Selene AC and Toni Mueller on Bandolero. Following this came thrilling performances of alta escuela and the ever spectacular and crowd-stealing la garrocha, originally a method of working cattle and testing fighting bulls from horseback and now an art form on its own. Paul Dufresne—those of us who know him sometimes refer to him as “poetry on horseback”—demonstrated traditional Spanish maneuvers and had his stallion, Mystique’s Padrino, doing a beautiful levade on a small box! A living statue! Paul’s daughter, Acacia Dufresne, gave—as always—a thrilling sight liberty riding on her half-Andalusian, Rocket. Israel Mendez on his gorgeous stallion Cortez II, delighted everyone with traditional Spanish moves. Cortez excels at piaffe and Spanish Walk! Charros, that quintessential icon of Old México, were proudly represented by Pedro Muñoz Sanchez on Talisman. Other exciting exercises rounded out the evening. Following this, Richelle Eger was presented with the Award of Excellence for her always cheerful and unstinting hard work, beyond the proverbial call of duty, on behalf of PAALH. A huge feature of Fiesta night was the auction of an Azteca colt, the 2008 Reserve National Champion Part-Bred Andalusian Colt, 4 years and under. VMF Arquero was donated by Dr. Anne Starr and Brian Rehwald of Valhalla Andalusians in Crescent Valley, British Columbia. The winner was a very lucky young lady! As you can see, this is a not-to-bemissed event for owners and aficionados of Iberian horses! The invitation is out for you to join us in 2009 from July 24-26 in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

The traditional sombrero Cordobés is an important part of the Traje Corto. Colour should complement as best as possible the clothing colour. Men rarely wear black hats (except sometimes in Doma Vaquera – competition – where only the colours black, grey or brown are allowed). Sombreros should have a wide flat and stiff brim. Some cheaper versions have a narrower and/or flexible brim and these are not truly correct. It should be worn pulled onto the forehead and should touch the right eyebrow and should never hang down behind the wearer. If a chin strap is used it goes under the chin, not neck. The sombrero calañés, a small round, velvet hat with upturned/rolled brim, worn over a cotton ‘kerchief’, is sometimes worn. The kerchief is tied in a ‘pirate’ style with the knot at the back of the head. The hat is worn slightly tilting forwards. The ‘catite’ is similar and worn with a kerchief, used mostly in displays.
Jacket – Riding - Men
It is usual for men to wear the the chaquetilla campera (or Guayabera), the same as in Vaquera. This has a rounded collar and no lapels and to be correct must have five buttons at the front and five on each sleeve. Note that only the top button should be done up (and it is incorrect to ride without the top button jacket buttoned). Jacket – Riding - Ladies

There are various styles of Chaquetilla Paseo (pictured) that can be worn and different manufacturers have different names for these styles, for example Macarena, M a e s t r a n z a , Pasamaneria, and
Sevillana. Black is not popular. All black outfits are sometimes considered to denote funeral wear.
Jacket - Marsellés
Worn by gentlemen and ladies. Traditionally made from wool and worn in cold weather. Double breasted. Marsellés jackets may be worn either over or instead of the Campero or Paseo jackets and can also be worn during competition in bad weather. Shirt (Camisa) For men a plain (no frills or diamante buttons) long sleeved white shirt is most usual and traditional, although some men are now wearing more elaborate pleated shirts. All buttons should be done up including the top button. Ladies can wear a white ‘dress’ type shirt, with frills, diamante buttons etc. To be absolutely correct, the sleeves of the shirt should be long enough so the cuffs are just visible, protruding beyond the sleeves of the jacket (1.5 cm). Ruffles are permitted for women when riding side saddle and wearing a chaquetilla. Trousers (Pantalón/Calzon) Either Paseo (trousers without ‘turn-ups’) that take caireles, 5 per leg, or Campero (trousers with ‘turn ups’) trousers can be used. Ladies ‘dress’ shirt Paseo trousers are normally the preferred wear inclassical style. Note: Campero trousers are worn with Botos Camperos (high boots). Paseo or Calzona trousers, with caireles, are slightly shorter than the Campero style, with the stripes of the cuff in a contrary direction to the trouser. These are worn with Polainas (half chaps) and botines (short boots) or Zapato Vaquero (Vaquera shoes). Both styles have a button up fly and no pockets. Note: With Paseo trousers, the top two Caireles should pass through both sets of holes in the trousers

Caireles
Worn with ‘Paseo’trosers. Also worn on culottes (although culottes are ‘incorrect’ Spanish dress and not allowed in competition). Caireles are available in a number of designs, usually horse heads, acorns or vaquera stirrups. Silver is the traditional colour although gold is sometimes used in the Feria (not allowed in competition). Caireles come in varying qualities, with two or three sets of horse h e a d s , stirrups or acorns, etc per cairele. Horse hair caireles (ideally to match the horse’s mosquera) are also correct, although rarely seen nowadays.
Braces (Tirante)
Traditionally leather, plain or tooled (Repujada style). Buttoned to the trousers. There are also many choices of cheaper ‘elasticated’ Leather braces
Side saddle skirts are worn over high brown boots. These should be high enough so no leg is exposed. Sash (Fajin), or Scarf (Pañuelo) Should be worn around the waist, knotted, with the ends traditionally tied onto the braces which hold the trousers up, with no loose ends. Sometimes this is a silk scarf and normally this complements and blends in colour with the rest of the outfit, although it can be contrasting and more colourful for riding in the Feria. Red is not acceptable for competition.
Boots (Botas camperos)
High boots made of natural leather are worn with trousers with turn ups (calzon campero) and must be the natural colour of the leather, brown, not black. For ‘Clásica’ style high brown boots can also be worn, or alternatively brown shoes or s h o r t b r o w n boots, together with polainas (Spanish style half chaps). High brown boots should be worn with side saddle skirts (falda amazona), or if culottes are worn and should be high enough that you do not see bare flesh, socks etc when riding. Black boots are incorrect in traditional dress. Polainas (Spanish half chaps) They may be plain, or of the tooled type (‘Huelva’ style), or with white ornamentation (Repujada style).

Normally black, grey or with a grey pin stripe is worn when riding, but again the colour can match the jacket. Worn with either chaquetilla campera (vaquera) or chaquetilla paseo (must be campera if competing in Doma Vaquera).
The ‘Portuguese’ style are also acceptable, although more often these are used as everyday working Polainas. Traditional polainas are laced up with leather ties (agujetas) and have no metal fittings. General working polainas (left) may have tab and stud fixings. Note: Polainas are worn with Paseo/Calzona trousers (with caireles), not Campero trousers (turn ups), over short boots or ‘Vaquera’ shoes (Zapato Vaquero). Full chaps (Zahones) Many designs from plain (lisa) working style or the discretely tooled Huelva style, to the ornamented (Repujada or artesania) style which is used only for the Feria, not competition. Chaps are usually worn over campero (with turn-ups) trousers.
