Hastings GM Raj Mutti regretfully announced the departure of Paul Ryneveld, Director of Racing at Hastings Racecourse effective March 15, 2013. Mutti acknowledged that Ryneveld made significant positive contributions not only to the racing department but the overall growth of the sport since joining the Hastings team in December, 2008. “We wish Paul well and thank him for helping turn our live racing program into such a successful venture,” Mutti said. “He was instrumental in helping to increase field size and handle the last couple of years and raise the Hastings profile in the racing industry.” Mutti said he is currently active in the search to fill the void created by Ryneveld’s departure. “We’re looking for someone to be part of our industry-leading team as we continue to build for the future at Hastings.” HorseRacingBC is owned and produced by Jim Reynolds. Donald ‘Doc’ Olson

March 23, 1936 — February 28, 2013 On Thursday February 28, 2013, the world lost a gentleman and a scholar with the passing of Dr. Donald Ottis Olson, 76. In his final days his family surrounded him and his wife of 53 years, Bonnie, stayed by his side until he slipped away - never letting go Donald ‘Doc’ Olson and wife Bonnie of his hand. Don was born at the Olson family ranch near Grass Range, Montana. He was the youngest of 16 children born to Inga and Ole Olson. He emulated his brothers and followed them into the Air National Guard and then the Air Force. A medical condition led to an early, honourable discharge in 1958. Always athletic, he was awarded a basketball scholarship to Colorado State University. Preferring Montana to Colorado, Don transferred to Montana State University and completed an undergraduate degree in Science with a minor in Education. After teaching middle school for one year he returned to school at Washington State University and became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Don immigrated with his wife and young daughter, Susan, to Kamloops, BC in 1966 to begin work at the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Lorne Greenaway. In 1968, Don purchased the clinic and expanded the practice to five locations which he ran with commitment and passion for 18 years. In 1975, he was invited to be a “Practitioner on Sabbatical” to teach and learn at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. He was honoured by the students as “Instructor of the Year.” In 1984, he sold the clinics to accept a position with Agriculture Canada from which he retired in 2001. During this period, he completed a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Medicine. For seventeen years, Don fulfilled his love of horses while serving as the Regulatory Veterinarian at the Hastings Park Racetrack. Throughout his career, he was involved in a variety of service organizations. He served as President of the BC Veterinary Medical Association in 1973 and also as a councillor for several years. Beginning in 1966, Don was a member of the Canadian Veterinary Association and served as the Chairman of the Large Animal Practice Committee in 1970. He was involved with the BC High School Rodeo Association and served as president from 1984-86. In addition, Don was a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Veterinary Association, and the Rotary Club of New Westminster. He had the kindest heart and a mischievous grin. We will miss both everyday.

A New Book by Julie White

www.horseracingbc.ca

Under The Wire will make an excellent gift for the pre-teen horseman in your family. Written by Julie White of Vernon, BC this is the award winning author’s fourth book. It is available at independent booksellers in BC,and from Amazon.com or at www.sononis.com. ................................. Born at the racetrack, Reid Widmark is only sixteen and already on his way to becoming a professional jockey. He’s picking up mounts and has a special way with the best horse in his mother’s barn. One big win on Carmina, and his future is assured. Then his mother takes a fall, and everything changes. Suddenly, people he thought were his friends are taking over—in the barn, with Carmina, in his life. With a fight at every turn, he’s ready to take off and go his own way. What stops him is Ella, a new and true friend. Before long, Reid’s staring down the track toward the future he’s dreamed of. When it comes to writing about horses-and horse racing-Julie White is the real deal. I couldn’t put Under the Wire down. Full if accurate details about life at the track, this is a compelling coming-of-age story with a delicious equine focus. Fabulous! Review compliments of Nikki Tate, author of the Stablemates novels and many other books about horses

It’s The Season! Breeding Notes As breeding season is upon us it is time to focus on getting your maiden bred and re-breeding your mare after foaling. Maidens and mares with foals at foot are generally the least problematic. That being said as I outline below, certain conditions can predispose to problems. At the time of foaling unless there were to be obvious mare issues such as retained placenta, uterine infection, etc. the focus tends to be on the foal. However a post foaling reproductive exam is extremely important and you should always get it done. Detection of those hidden problems such as vaginal tears, cervical injury, poor uterine involution is very important to preserve future fertility. If the uterus retains fluid through poor involution there is a huge increase in infections and related breeding problems.

Making a decision on whether to breed on foal heat should be made primarily on how well and quickly the uterus returns to normal. Breeding with a poorly involuted uterus will unlikely result in a pregnancy and in the long run will delay the time it takes to get her back in foal. Any history of previous breeding problems warrants more consideration and investigation prior to breeding. I like to refer to the “compromised” uterus. This is a condition where the normal uterine defense mechanisms designed by nature to help prevent infections have been damaged. If this is the case, as would be reflected in positive cultures identifying the presence of bacteria, cytology or abnormal uterine biopsies then special treatments and breeding techniques may be warranted. The process of getting one’s mare in foal can be short and sweet, one trip to the stud, one cover, one pregnancy exam, wait 11 months and Voilá, the foal arrives! Easy right? Well… wait a minute and like everything else in life, read the fine print. In a perfect world the previous scenario would be the norm but unfortunately

By Dr. David J. Paton BSc, DVM there can be a lot of issues that get in the way. As a simple rule of thumb the harder it was to get your mare in foal the more she needs to be checked during pregnancy. We now understand that there are several issues that can affect the mare’s ability to carry to term. The first being early embryonic death (EED). We now know that there is a significant fetal loss between day 16 and 45. Just because she is in foal at day 16 there is no guarantee that she will carry to term. Mares that have had any previous reproductive issues are more likely to lose their pregnancy. This list includes more obvious reasons such as previous chronic or active uterine infections (endometritis), retained placenta, cervical injuries, poor rectal vaginal conformation, urine pooling, and previous foaling problems. More subtle causes of fetal loss include metabolic syndrome (obesity), lameness (laminitis), medications, age, nutrition and obviously, illness. One of the most common causes of later stage fetal death and an important cause of sick foals is placentitis. Simply put, infection of the placenta (placentitis) not only can cause fetal lose and abortion but also foals to be born weak and septic. Many of those “dummy foal” are in fact sick or septic from in utero infection. The most common cause of placentitis is an ascending infection traveling from the vagina, through the cervix into the uterus. Bacteria can also gain entry into the uterus at the time of breeding and can remain dormant during initial pregnancy. Of course one should not forget that abortion due to the Rhinopuemonitis (Rhino) virus remains a constant threat. It goes without saying that twins are preventable and if undiagnosed in early pregnancy (day 14-17) inevitably results in a disaster of some sort. So we have identified that your mare is at risk for EED or abortion, what can we do to prevent it. Excellent breeding shed hygiene is the first place to start. If there are obvious rectovaginal conformational issues they of course need to be addressed. Caslicks and other surgeries can be used to help correct deficits to the vulva, vagina and cervix. Pre and post breeding uterine lavage and appropriate antibiotic therapy can help prevent and eliminate infection. Post breeding ultrasound evaluation is imperative as it can help identify post breeding uterine fluid pooling. A common mistake is to assume that because your mare may have cultured negative at the start of

March 2013

the breeding season she will remain uninfected. It is very common for a mare to acquire an infection during the season. Probably one of the least valuable cultures is one taken prior to the mare starting to cycle regularly. Older mares, mares who have had several foals and mares with a history of problems may have a compromised uterus and are much more susceptible to infection and fetal loss. In at-risk mares as pregnancy progresses follow up evaluation is essential. Follow up pregnancy exam after day 24 when a fetal heartbeat should be visible can help forecast problems. An important evaluation for these at risk mares is a periodic assessment of fetal and uterine health. The measurement of the Combined Thickness Uterine Placenta (CTUP) via ultrasound, identifying increased thickness can be an indicator of placentitis. Once identified placental infection can be treated with antibiotics. Trans abdominal ultrasound can also help assess fetal health and viability. It is important to know that mares carrying foals that are compromised by infection are more likely to have foaling problems (dystocia). The foal plays an active role in the birthing process and if weakened by infection and poor oxygen supply problems will occur. Anytime a foal is born from a problem mare, special care is warranted immediately at birth. The time, money, effort and heart break associated with fetal lose and abortion can never be 100% avoided, however identification of at risk mares with appropriate intervention can go a long way towards reducing the chances of it happening to your mare.

Rachel Doing Well After Doctors Drain Abscess 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra was described as “bright and alert with a good appetite” on the evening of March 7 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. Veterinarians at Rood & Riddle have been monitoring the mare since she underwent abdominal surgery following foaling complications Feb. 13 after the delivery of her Bernardini filly a day earlier. They continue to view the 7-year-old mare’s recovery as “remarkable” in spite of this setback. “As part of the continuous evaluation and monitoring that Rachel is receiving at Rood & Riddle, an abscess adjacent to her reproductive tract and rectum was found this morning,” said Dr. Brett Woodie, in a statement released by Rood & Riddle. The hospital reported “the abscess was drained successfully via a standing surgical procedure, throughout which Rachel’s vital signs remained normal. She came through the procedure well and was even able to graze this afternoon,” the statement said. While this type of hurdle is not unexpected, the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro will remain at Rood & Riddle for continuous observation as she continues down what has been called “a long road” toward recovery. Another update on her condition can be expected on March 11 unless a change in her condition were to occur sooner. courtesy of The BloodHorse
