Jockey Club Of Canada Joins The Coalition For Horse Racing Integrity

Leading Canadian racing group announces support for reforms to medication testing and enforcement in American Thoroughbred racing. The Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity announced today the Jockey Club of Canada (JCC) has joined as a member. The JCC is the second international racing group to join the coalition, bringing additional support from another jurisdiction which has already implemented the type of uniform, high standards for medication testing and enforcement that supporters seek to achieve in the United States. “The border between Canada and the U.S. is

one crossed by thousands of racehorses each year,” said Jeff Begg, Chief Steward of the Jockey Club of Canada. “The members of the Jockey are eager to see medication reforms in the U.S. that will provide certainty and a level playing field no matter what state or track they’re headed to.” The Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity supports the Thoroughbred Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015, which would authorize an independent, racingspecific, nongovernmental and non-profit organization to create uniform, high standards in drug and medication testing and enforcement for Thoroughbred horse

racing. The Coalition’s membership includes major racing organizations, animal welfare groups, racing and wagering facilities and a grassroots organization with over 1,200 owners, trainers, breeders, and racing professionals. The Jockey Club of Canada oversees the Thoroughbred breeding registry and graded stakes racing in Canada, and is responsible for the annual Sovereign Awards program and the Canadian Graded Stakes Committee. JCC represents Canada at the annual International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities Conference.

2016 Hastings Live Racing Calendar Opens April 17 With 53-Card Meet

Book Review…Lies: by Kathy Bremner

Issue # 76

Hastings: The 2016 thoroughbred racing season will begin in mid-April and Former racehorse trainer Kathy Bremner, is an award winning conclude in mid-October it was announced today by Hastings Racecourse author using the name Kathryn Jane. She writes novels filled with mystery, suspense, adventure, psychic abilities, horses, and other animals. Think General Manager Darren MacDonald. “It was great to come to a mutually beneficial schedule with the horsemen’s MacGyver, I Love Lucy, Criminal Minds, and the Mentalist. groups,” MacDonald said. “I couldn’t be happier. Now we just wait for the Her latest release, LIES hit the shelves on October 30th. approval of the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB).” Opening day in 2016 will be Sunday, April 17 and the schedule will encompass 53 dates that conclude on Sunday, October 16. There will be six Friday Night Live cards, up from five this past season, all beginning at 7:00 p.m. “We have determined that over and above Friday nights being popular with a young demographic, they have also caught on with the corporate sector,” MacDonald said.

Northlands Committed to Racing

A notice posted by Alberta’s horse racing industry on Sunday provides optimism after the future of Northlands Park as a racing venue was questioned late last week. Dr. Steve Smith, President of the The Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association of Alberta, stated that while the industry is still negotiating a slot revenue sharing agreement with the provincial government, there is a commitment to racing at Northlands Park through 2017 as long as the track and province have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in place regarding slot revenue. The current MOU expires on March 31, 2016. On Friday, quotes from Don Iveson, the Mayor of Edmonton, cited in multiple media reports created a maelstrom of confusion. “I think the provincial government’s position on it (horse racing) is that they don’t see a big future for continuing subsidy of that activity,” Mayor Iveson was quoted as saying. “Clearly, that could have impacts for Northlands, but you know that also creates some different opportunities, as well, for the land to be used and the facilities to be re-purposed, so I think we’ll be resilient no matter what.” “Horse Racing Alberta is working with the government on an MOU (a Memorandum of Understanding), and we are waiting on the results of that before we go forward in any particular direction,” said interim GM. Scott Sinclair,

Tara isn’t his type, yet he can’t shake the image of her lean, mean attitude, long black hair, and mysterious dark eyes. Tara has a rep—handles whatever comes her way, and is paid top fees as an international equine escort. Jake is the one man who can get her to talk, but at what price? She has enough information to blow his case out of the water, but she’s been lying so long it feels like the truth. One horse is missing. Will there be more?

Application for the 2016 Hastings Racing Club

I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF HASTINGS RACING CLUB II AND I UNDERSTAND, REPRESENT AND AGREE AS FOLLOWS: 1. I understand that the purpose of Hastings Racing Club II (hereafter “Club II”) is to provide the experience of Thoroughbred racehorse ownership through participation in a partnership that races Thoroughbred racehorses. 2. I understand that Club II is organized as a partnership. I understand that any potential return on my investment is dependent upon how well the Club's horses perform. Under no circumstances will there be any further charges over and above the initial membership fee, save for the GPEB license fee of $30 that is valid for 3 years (see 5 below). 3. As to Club II activities, I understand that: a) Club II has acquired by way of lease the horse Shooting Jacket with the intention to race him for the 2016 season at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, BC. Club II intends to acquire another horse to race at Hastings Racecourse. b) up to 200 memberships in Club II will be sold at $250.00 each and each membership will constitute a 1/200th share in Club II. Funds raised from selling memberships will be used to pay for stabling, veterinarian, blacksmith and training fees and other expenses. In the case of Shooting Jacket expenses will be paid from October 16, 2015 through October 31, 2016. Expenses for the second horse will extend from the date of purchase to October 31, 2016. No membership funds will be used to purchase horses; c) membership fees will be deposited into an account with the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of BC (HBPA) and expenses will be paid from that account; d) Richard Yates, Secretary-Treasurer of the HBPA, will represent Club II’s interest as the Club manager of the horses and will be paid a co-ordination/management fee of $500 per month from November 1st, 2015 to October 31st, 2016; e) all racing and training decisions will rest with the Trainer and Club Manager; f) as the horses are owned by a separate entity created for that purpose and leased to Club II, members will bear none of the risks associated with owning or buying the horses. However, members will be entitled to purse winnings and will receive their share after October 31, 2016 net of such training, Club II management and other costs involved in maintaining the horses that are not covered by the membership fees; g) on October 31, 2016 Club II will cease and be dissolved. The remaining proceeds from member payments and purse money will be returned to the members. Such funds will be distributed on a per membership basis. 4. It is intended to create a new Club II for the 2017 Thoroughbred season. The horses that raced for Club II in 2016 will be leased to Club II in 2017 provided it is merited by their performance. Details, including fees for membership in Club II in 2017, will be announced on or before October 31, 2016. All members of Club II in 2016 will have first rights to purchase a membership in Club II for 2017. 5. I represent to Club II, the BC Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB), and any other regulatory bodies, that I am eligible to receive an owner’s license. I understand that a GPEB license is required to own a racehorse, and therefore to participate in Club II and I agree to pay the ownership license fee. I understand that if I am denied a GPEB

license, I will be denied membership in Club II and my membership fees will be returned. 6. I agree that this is the only agreement or understanding that applies to my interest in Club II Signature: ____________________________________Date: _____________ Name: _________________________________________________________ Address: _______________________________________________________ City: _____________________________Prov: _____________ PC: Phone: (______) - ____-_________ Email: ______________________ Membership fees can be paid by cheque or cash. Nutrition… This may seem rather simple but like everything else we need to be aware of how government feed regulations dictate what can and cannot be on a label and a few key items to keep in mind. First of all when buying a horse feed we usually start with looking at a complete feed. By government definition, this means everything except the water and forage a horse needs. We call them concentrates, horse rations or texturized horse feeds. One must be cautious as an older term for complete feeds for horses was actually used to describe feeds that provided the forage component as well. Many senior horse feeds are set up this way, so ask about what feed your senior horse needs and be careful to find out if it is a complete feed that still needs forage added at normal levels. Usually with a mainline concentrate feed we supply the energy, protein and

The fat is like protein, is just the Crude Fat, and makes no allowance for the fatty acids like omega three fatty acids, but it at least gives you an idea as to where a lot of the energy comes from. Regular grain rations are usually 4-6% fat and some like Equi Cal are much higher indicating they are lower in grain. Some horse are better

Hocks: One Of The Main Causes Of Equine Leg Lameness

We are very successful at treating and repairing front leg lameness issues such as Bowed Tendons, Check ligaments, inflamed ankles/fetlocks, knees and hooves. The problems with the shoulders, bursa, whirl bone, hamstrings, sacroiliac & hunter bumps can also be attributed to inflamed or painful hocks. We have found that most horses that have any of the above lameness issues have Inflamed Hocks. The magnificent horse is so eager to please us, they will perform through pain and discomfort to best of their ability. When the hocks are inflamed there is an infection in the synovial fluids in the hock. The horse will adjust its gait to compensate for the pain and stiffness in the hock joint. A lot of people inject the hocks for temporary relief. Whatever they inject into the hocks must travel throughout the body of the horse ie: the liver, kidneys, brain and other key organs. We have found that in human athletes there are negative complications. There is also the possibility of hock infection from the insertions of the needle. It happens more than people know. We know as we have to treat the infection which takes a long time. When a hock is infected any amount of antibiotics does not seem to help as the infection is considerable. You should check the hocks in the morning before any exercise or turnout. If the hocks are ice cold then they are healthy. If there is any inflammation the hocks should be treated with the LEG SAVE hock treatment. This will help with proper maintenance and performance if the hocks are the problem. Race horses, Grand Prix Jumper and Barrel Racers will really benefit with LEG SAVER treatments. The LEG SAVER hock treatments is simple and effective and long lasting. It will have to be repeated only if the horse is actively performing or develops inflammation in the joint You can contact us via phone or email for help with this treatment and we will reply promptly.
