Gosailgo Goes All The Way, Scores Major Boeing Upset

Gosailgo, the longest price in the four-horse field, romped to a five-length victory over Exclusive Diva in the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for older fillies and mares Sunday at Emerald Downs. E Z Kitty finished third after a slow break, and Champagneandcaviar finished fourth. Ridden by Debbie Hoonan at 116 lbs, Gosailgo ran one mile in 1:35.08 and paid $20.20 and $4.40. Robert J. Anderson is the trainer for owner Greame Hope of Burnaby, British Columbia. A 4-year-old B.C.-bred by Finality-Sailpost, Gosailgo led through fractions of :24.31, :47.23, 1:10.84 and 1:22.72. She held a three-length lead into the stretch, and had plenty left to hold off 4-to-5 betting favorite Exclusive Diva and 6-to-5 second choice E Z Kitty. Based at Hastings Racecourse, Gosailgo had made two earlier trips to Emerald Downs this season, finishing fourth in the May 12 Hastings Handicap won by E Z Kitty and third in the June 9 Washington State Legislators Stakes won by Exclusive Diva. Exclusive Diva, ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 121 lbs, chased Gosailgo from flag fall to finish, but settled for second place. con’t on pg 3

Portland Meadows Announces Dates for 2013-14

Portland Meadows to Offer 14 Thoroughbred Stakes for 2013-14 Season Portland Meadows will open their 2013-14 season on July 21 for a 49-day run. For the first three weeks only Sunday racing (July 21, July 29 and August 4) will be held. Beginning on August 14 and through their closing card on January 26, 2014, racing will expand to every Sunday and Wednesday, with minor exceptions over the holidays. The Oregon track recently won legislative approval to install historical racing machines, which resemble video lottery terminals but are considered pari-mutuel because they rely on previously run races and pool all bets. A release gave no indication of when the machines will be operational. Due to the reduction of live race dates and the financial contribution from the Oregon HBPA, the bottom purse level has been raised from $3,000 ($1,600 claiming level) to $5,000 ($2,000 claiming level). Fourteen stakes for Thoroughbreds will be offered beginning with the $15,000 Oregon HBPA Sprint Stakes on August 14 and ending with the $25,000 Oregon Derby on January 19. The $35,000 Portland Mile will be contested on September 2. The three popular claiming series will also return, each run in three legs: City of Roses Sprint (fillies and mares); McFadden Memorial Sprint; and Oregon HBPA Route. The meet will also feature nine stakes for Quarter Horse runners, including the $17,000 Baxter Andruss Futurity final on November 17.

Noosa Beach, Retires

www.horseracingbc.ca

Noosa Beach paraded on July 3rd one last time before his numerous fans, and afterward the gelding will join Frazier in a final visit to the Winner’s Circle. In addition, Frazier will autograph full color Noosa Beach posters given away free to the first 7,500 fans through the gates. The track’s all-time leader with 11 stakes wins, Noosa Beach recently sustained a minor ankle injury and trainer Doris Harwood and owner Jeff Harwood decided to call off the comeback. The now 7-year-old gelding pretty much rewrote the record book while winning consecutive Horse of the Meeting titles in 2010 and 2011. At the pinnacle of his career, Noosa Beach won six consecutive stakes races including a dominant victory with Frazier aboard in the 2010 Longacres Mile. “There’s hardly words to describe what Noosa Beach has meant to both Jeff and myself,” Doris Harwood said. “His nickname at the barn was Elvis, and for two years he was the king.”

Gosailgo Wins Boeing… E Z Kitty, ridden by Anne Sanguinetti at co-high weight of 121 lbs, finished third, 4 ¾-lengths back of Exclusive Diva. The six-time stakes winner prefers to freewheel up front, and might have been compromised by a tardy break. Gosailgo, meanwhile, had smooth sailing on the lead.

“She went up to the lead really easy,” Hoonan said. “She was really game. Underneath me, she felt like she knew what she was doing, and that she was in charge. “It felt like we were going really easy and we really were. I was really surprised that (E Z Kitty and Exclusive Diva) didn’t go to the

lead. I thought they’d be out there wingin’ and dingin’, but I guess they were trying to play a different game today and it worked in our favor. I could feel I had a lot of horse left, so I just waited and waited as long as I could.”

Gosailgo has an overall record of 4-1-2 in 11 starts with earnings of $96,739, including $27,500 for Sunday’s triumph. The chestnut filly also scored a restricted stakes victory last year at her home track.

Horseracing Returns To Osoyoos

July 2013

Hats At the Races

Hats at the Races has become a trend at Hastings. Men’s hats, women’s hats and at tractors are certainly in vogue as shown here by Global weather forecaster Kristi Gordon (far right, back row) and pals.

Desert Park in Osoyoos hosted it’s first meet in fifteen years

Thoroughbred and Quarterhorse racing returned to Osoyoos last month after a decade long absence. The thrill of the sound of the racing hooves drew about 1,800 people to Desert Park on June 15th The attendance and excitement was overwhelming – the concession ran out of burgers, the beer garden ran out of beer—twice, the fans could not bet fast enough, but fun was had by all. A card of seven races had a strong list of competitors – Osoyoos honoured Ted Pendergraft in a Memorial Race for all his contributions to Desert Park and his strong participation as a volunteer and as a horse owner over a decade of horse activities in the area. The Quarter Horse Challenge engineered by Pete and Roberta Hormes was the highlight of the day. With $15,000 in purse money – the race ended in a dead heat making for two very

happy and excited owners. Osoyoos is full of wonderful volunteers who contributed a lot of time and effort into the day starting with the retrofitting of the main building, jockey room, barns, fencing, paddock, and so many other items in need of attention – they worked over six months on the facility to meet the expectation of the race committee, horse owners, trainers and jockeys. Osoyoos is so excited with the upcoming date of August 31st and have created a theme to the race day of Derby Days and saluting the local wineries!! They’re Off and Running !!!

Veteran jockeys Richard Hamel and Aaron Gryder captivated the attention of racing fans on opening weekend at Hastings Racecourse, the first track in Canada to launch its 2013 thoroughbred season. Hamel, a two-time BC Derby winner and leading rider at Hastings in 2010 and 2011, stole the show on opening day Saturday with four wins. The popular native of Terrace, B.C. opened the 2013 meet by scoring back-to-back victories for trainer Steve Henson in the first two races of the new season. Gryder, riding at Hastings for the first time in his illustrious career, made his debut a memorable one with his win aboard Castinette Dancer in Race 3 of the eight-race card Saturday afternoon. “It’s always nice to make a good impression right off the bat,” Gryder said. “It was a great start to a whole new adventure for me.” Gryder, 42, arrived in Vancouver from Santa Anita on April 7 after signing a contract with owner Glen Todd, who races under the stable name North American Thoroughbred Horse Company (NATHC). In a riding career that began in 1987, Gryder’s mounts have earned more than $112 million with his most celebrated victory aboard Well Armed in the $6 million Dubai World Cup 2009. Hastings GM Raj Mutti, describes Gryder as “a terrific ambassador for racing” and refers to the 2013 roster of jockeys at Hastings as “one of the best ever”. Besides Hamel and Gryder, last year’s leading rider Amadeo Perez is expected to be on the grounds this week upon his arrival from Mexico. Also among the group are homebred Scott Williams who rode in Edmonton last season and won two races Sunday at Hastings, along with Fernando Perez - runner-up to Amadeo Perez in 2012 - and Marlo Dunn, last year’s leading apprentice jockey.

Budget Reverses ‘Craig’ Decision But Increases Restricted Farm Loss To $17,500

The Federal Budget released on March 21, 2013 contains two changes to section 31 of the Income Tax Act. The Jockey Club of Canada Tax Committee Chair, John Unger, has released the following statement regarding Section 31 of the Income Tax Act pertaining to the horse racing industry in Canada. First, the wording of section 31 is being changed so as to in effect reverse the Court decision in the Craig case for future years. As a result, the restricted farming loss rules will apply to you unless farming is your predominate source of income. If you have a non-farming source of income that is not subordinate to farming as a source of your income, any losses suffered from farming will be subject to the restricted farming loss rules. Second, the restricted farming loss limit is being increased from $8,750 (being $2,500 of losses plus one-half of further losses up to $12,500) to $17,500 (being $2,500 of losses plus one-half of further losses up to $30,000). These changes are proposed to take effect for taxation years that end on or after March 21, 2013. The Jockey Club of Canada has maintained an active focus on changing the tax rules governing the owning and maintaining of racehorses in Canada. Section 31 of the Income Tax Act had been described by many as outdated and unfair. The Jockey Club of Canada, Tax Committee Chair, John Unger, and HBPA President, Sue Leslie, presented a th new proposal in meetings with the Federal Government in late 2012 and again in early 2013. “Section 31 has remained substantially unchanged for 25 years,” commented Jockey Club of Canada Chief Steward, James Lawson. “Although the increase is not as much as we had hoped for, it is still progress.”

Princeton Racing Days Marlo Dunn Hangs up Her Tack Apprentice jockey Marlo Dunn has decided to call it a career. Dunn, 25, said she was planning to continue galloping horses in the mornings and go to school in the afternoons to finish high school before moving on to college. She began her riding career in 2010 and was the leading apprentice at Hastings in 2011 and 2012. Dunn retires with 75 wins earnings of $1,130,012. “I just kind of lost my mojo and thought it would be better to go back to school now instead of waiting until I’m 35,” Dunn said. “I’ve been thinking about it for awhile, it wasn’t a snap decision.” Jockey Club of Canada, Graded Stakes Committee, Notice to the Industry 2013 Highlander Stakes remains a Grade 3 After a significant downpour prior-to the running of the 2013 G2 Highlander Stakes on July 7 at Woodbine, the race was automatically downgraded to a Grade 3 when the event was forced off the turf due to unsafe course conditions. When turf course conditions prompt a Graded race to be changed to a non-grass course after the close of nominations, the race is automatically downgraded by one grade level for that running only. The Jockey Club of Canada Graded Stakes Committee today reviewed the speed figures and other factors of the race and compared them with previous years data. The determination was made that the Grade quality of the race was affected by the change of surface and therefore the 2013 Highlander Stakes will remain a Grade 3 in 2013.

Not an Empty Seat in the Grandstand; A Great Turnout at Princeton Shows Interior Racing Is Alive And Kicking

It may have been the best turn out Princeton Racing Days have had in quite some time the organizers received a lot of positive response from owners, trainers, & riders and racing fans. The card saw 51 horses entered with only six scratches for the day. The mutuel handle was $22,285 with about 1000 to 1500 people through the gate. Princeton has not seen numbers like this in several years. A lot of people stayed to enjoy the band after the races about 100 to 150 in the beer garden at 10 pm. Interior meets could not be successful with out the wonderful volunteers who collected tickets, served hotdogs, manned the gate, and every other job that needs to be done on a race day. Congratulations to you all.

The Claiming Game… by Mark Johnson

www.horseracingbc.ca

July 2013

It’s time to have a conversation about claiming horses. Many new owners don’t understand how the claiming system works yet approximately 80% of the horses running every race day at tracks around North America are entered in claiming races. It was adopted in North America a long time ago as a way to establish a class system to create competitive races for lower quality racehorses and it works amazingly well. The trick is to enter your horse at a price where it can be competitive, yet not be claimed, assuming you don’t really want to sell the horse. All the horses in a race are entered for the same price. When a horse is entered in a claiming race it is for sale. The owners are saying “I accept the possibility that some other owner will put up the money for the horse” and if that happens, at the end of the race that horse goes to a new home. It happens a lot. It is one way new owners can enter the sport and ‘get immediate action’. There have been some incredible claims made over the years. One you may be familiar with is Lava Man. The California bred, Lava Man, was claimed for $50,000 in August of his 3 year old year. Over the next few The Real Housewives of Vancouver’s Mary Zilba and Robin Reichman are years Lava Man went on to win multiple Grade 1 races, over $5 million and frequent visitors to Glen Todd’s box at Hastings Jim Reynolds photo become the darling of race fans nation wide. The fame and riches received by the owners and trainer of Lava Man were well deserved but imagine how the former owners and trainer must have felt losing their young horse and watching him go on to a magnificent career. Hopefully they accepted their fate with dignity. Many owners and trainers still have a difficult time accepting when a horse they have entered and running in a claiming race gets taken by a competing owner and trainer team. Sometimes they have feelings of grief, shock and anger. Although it is no one’s place to deny people their feelings, it is disturbing when they direct those feelings at the people who have claimed their horse. They knew full well when their horse was entered for a price that it was quite possible another owner would take the risk and pay their price. It’s not the job of the buyer to guess what motivation the owner has for offering their horse at a set price (although he might be curious), it could be they are looking for a win, perhaps they need the money or maybe they have just given up on the horse. It simply doesn’t matter, their horse is for sale and just like a ten cent novel at a garage sale the person that puts up the money takes it. For the claiming system to operate effectively no one gets a free pass, it doesn’t matter if you are a celebrity, a prince or a pauper. You enter your horse in a claiming race, you observe the placing results, and if your horse ‘gets taken’, you recognize the fact your horse now moves to a new barn. People that understand this is how the game is played, hand the horse to the new trainer, offer their genuine best wishes and move on. However, some people think this is a hard reality to accept, losing their horse this way. Sometimes people are giving up a horse they have bred and raised from a new born foal, or purchased as a yearling and have raced for a number of years, and they have developed a strong emotional bond to the animal. But the world of horse racing is not for the ‘faint of heart’. Many elements of the game are downright challenging, to say the least. Losing a horse to a claim is not easy but it pales in comparison to the hardest way to lose your horse, a fatal breakdown. This is the loss no horseperson wants to experience or even talk about. It is the kind of loss that puts a claim into perspective. It is no secret that ‘the sport of kings’ is hanging on the edge of survival and when new owners or established owners, for that matter, catch grief for Thunderbird Show Park British Columbia claiming a horse, it won’t help bring the sport Langley, British Columbia back from the brink. In the business of horse Tuesday September 10, 2013 - 2:00 pm racing we need to exhibit some decorum, to attract and retain the prime ingredient necessary to the sports existence, the owners. The fact is, Yearling & Mixed Sale more often than not, the newly claimed horse will be available to be claimed back, when it runs SALE GRAD STAKES again. So the next time a horse is taken from you, WINNERS IN 2012 ! see if you can muster the strength to calmly walk up and wish the new owners all the best of luck Alpine Lad with their new purchase.
