Emerald Downs Stryker Phd 2014 Horse Of Meeting Jim and Mona Hour’s STRYKER PHD was voted Horse of the Meeting, Top Older Horse and Top Washington-bred Sunday as Emerald Downs announced its 2014 season honors on closing day of the track’s 19th season. A 5-year-old Washington-bred gelding, Stryker Phd was unbeaten in three starts including a smashing last-to-first victory in the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3), and also set stakes records while winning the one-mile Budweiser Handicap and 1 1/16-mile Mt. Rainier Handicap. The Larry Ross-trained bay led the meet in earnings, $165,000, and made amends for a runner-up finish in the 2013 Longacres Mile with a stunning fivewide move in the August 24 Mile, rallying from 12th place to win going away in 1:33.67. Stryker Phd has never been out of the money in 12 starts at Emerald Downs, racking up $272,046 in earnings, and was the first Washington-bred to win The Mile since Noosa Beach in 2010. Jockey Leslie Mawing, who scored his first Longacres Mile victory aboard Stryker Phd, won his second Emerald Downs riding title with 102 wins, and was voted Top Riding Achievement for his sensational 11 for 24 mark in stakes races. Horse of the Meeting was hotly contested as Stopshoppingdebbie and Trackattacker also received votes for the track’s top award. Northwest Farms’ Stopshoppingdebbie was a unanimous choice for Top Older Filly or Mare, after compiling an unprecedented second straight division sweep. The 4-year-old Curlin filly ripped off four straight wins topped by a victory in the $65,000 Emerald Distaff, and improved her career mark to 9-for-9. Tom Wenzel received Top Training Achievement for his work with Stopshoppingdebbie, orchestrating the superstar filly to eight consecutive stakes wins in 2013-14. Trainer Jeff Metz also continued his amazing success at Emerald Downs. The 47-year-old Californian saddled 49 winners for his second straight training title, joining Tim McCanna and Frank Lucarelli as the only trainers with multiple titles at Emerald Downs. Metz (Saratoga West) also was the meet’s leading owner for the second straight year with 19 wins. Lucarelli finished second with 41 wins, the 13th time in the last 16 seasons he’s finished either first or second, and also trained Trackattacker to three stakes wins and earned champion 2-Year-Old Male. Dare Me Devil, who was racing in $4,000

claiming races two years ago, enjoyed a resurgent campaign and was voted both Top Sprinter and Top Claimer. A 6-year-old Devil On Ice gelding trained by Rigoberto Velasquez for Rancho Viejo and Jerry Carmody, Dare Me Devil finished the season on a 4-1-0 tear including four wins at 6 ½ furlongs and a second in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic The Emerald Downs Derby, in which Mebossman edged Del Rio Harbor and Noosito in a blanket finish, was voted Race of the Meeting. Although he was third in the Derby, Last Rose Stable’s Noosito earned honors as Top 3-Year-Old. Trained by Doris Harwood, Noosa Beach’s little brother ripped off three stakes wins and looks to be a major factor next year vs. older horses. Mike and Amy Feuerborn’s Chu and You was voted Top 3-Year-Old Filly, following a campaign that saw the Robbie Baze trainee net a win and two seconds in stakes company. It was the second straight title for the You and I filly, voted Top 2-Year-Old Filly in 2013. This year’s 2-Year-old Filly title went to Todd and Shawn Hansen’s Ethan’s Baby, who was 2 for 2 including an explosive 6 ¼-length triumph in the Angie C Stakes.

The King is Back!!! Davis Dominates The Downs

Bill Davis put on a clinic October 10th at Fraser Downs thanks to a six-win driving performance and a three-win training performance which included a win in the feature race with Call Me Up. Davis took the opener with Jemmas Jet – a mare from his own barn in 1:55.2. He completed the sweep of the Daily Double with that one’s stablemate, Call Me Up, who held on for a narrow (1:53.4) score in the $10,500 Fillies and Mares Open. He catch-drove Mitchell Blue Chip (1:58.2) to victory in Race 3 and followed it up with a blowout victory behind On The Hunt (1:58.1) for trainer Marcel Bouvier in Race 5. He completed the training hat trick when he guided Pureform Goodtogo to a 1:54.3 triumph in Race 6 before clicking in the very next race with the David Bilyk trained Red Star Brea (1:57.2). The Langley, BC horseman has piled up more than 5,300 driving wins over the course of his career while banking more than $21 million along the way. More than half of his wins were with horses from his own barn. He’s sent out 3,334 winners to date for purse earnings in excess of $15 million.

2014 Wagering Numbers At Hastings Create Solid Foundation For Future Two-Year Extension with City of Vancouver Another Positive With the average on-track wagering figures in 2014 showing a marginal increase over 2013 and a two-year operating extension in place with the City of Vancouver, there was good reason for optimism as the thoroughbred season wound down at Hastings Racecourse. “We laid a great foundation this year to build on going forward,” said Darren MacDonald, General Manager at Hastings. “The two-year extension with the City allows us to continue working with industry stakeholders towards a longterm, sustainable horse racing program.” Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, owners of Hastings Racecourse, announced it had reached the operating agreement with the City of Vancouver through November, 2016. MacDonald released wagering

statistics that included average on-track wagering at $17,191 per race and averaged all associations at $64,156 per race. The highest handle of the year was on Monday, August 4 — BC Cup Day — with $400,264 on-track and an all associations total of $1,450,746. “I must thank the horsemen, owners, breeders and of course our fans for supporting our product this past year,” MacDonald said. “With the success of our marquee days we have shown that horse racing is very relevant in the Greater Vancouver marketplace.” Big Finish on Closing Day for Leading Rider Amadeo Perez breezed to the Leading Jockey Award at Hastings Racecourse for the second time in three years with four more winning rides on Sunday, Oct. 26, the final day of the thoroughbred racing season.

Perez finished the 2014 meet with 108 victories including six stakes races, chalking up $1,563,711 in total purse money. His win-place-show record was 108-76-66 after 385 starts. Perez, 31, also won the award in 2012 at Hastings. His enormous margin of victory this season was awesome as he finished 27 wins ahead of runnerup Richard Hamel and 68 wins ahead of third-place Frank Fuentes. Craig MacPherson was also a runaway winner of the Leading Trainers Award with 40 wins on the season, a convincing 13 ahead of Mike Anderson.

MacPherson, who also won the honours last year, sent 143

November 2014

horses to the starting gate in 2014 and finished with a winplace-show record of 40-2328. That equated to a leading $756,599 in purses. Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. owned by Horatio and Jackie Kemeny and Mark and Naudia Mache` swept the Leading Owners Award with a record of 17-16-12 and $360,433 in purse winnings under the guidance of exclusive trainer Dino Condilenios. It was also a repeat victory for Swift Thoroughbreds. Annual Thoroughbred Awards Dinner will be held on December 4 Perez, MacPherson and Swift Thoroughbreds will be acknowledged for their successful performances in 2014 at the Thoroughbred Awards Dinner on December 4 at Newlands Golf and Country Club in Langley. The ceremonies will include the induction of long-time jockey and media racing personality Tom Wolski as well as Spaghetti Mouse, the all-time B.C.-bred leading money winner owned by Nick and Pauline Felicella. The top thoroughbreds from various categories competing at Hastings Racecourse in 2014 will also be recognized. Wintering Money For Lower Level Claiming Horses At Hastings

The three industry Associations, in recognition of the economic realities of wintering and training lower level claiming horses, have implemented a plan to provide an incentive of $2,000 for horses that made their last start of 2014 at Hastings and come back to Hastings to make their first start in 2015 for a claiming price of $5,000 or less. The $2,000 bonus will be paid to the owner’s account immediately following an eligible horse’s first start at Hastings in 2015. Horses that start elsewhere after making their final 2014 start at Hastings are not eligible for this incentive program. The Associations’ intention is to reward those horses committed to racing at Hastings; therefore, the incentive is available only for horses that made their last appearance at Hastings in 2014 and make their first start for 2015 at Hastings for $5,000 or less.

A Dead horse Young Chuck moved to Montana and bought a horse from a farmer for $100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day. The next Day he drove up and said, “Sorry, Son, but I have some bad news, The horse died.” Chuck replied, “Well, then just give me my money back.” The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” Chuck said, “Ok, then, just bring me the dead horse.” The farmer asked, “What ya gonna do with him?” Chuck said, “I’m going to raffle him off.” The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead horse!” Chuck said, “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.” A month later, the farmer met up with Chuck and asked, “What happened with that dead horse?” Chuck said, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a net profit of $898.00.” The farmer said, “Didn’t anyone complain?” Chuck said, “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.” Chuck grew up and now works for the government.

Increasing Your Horse’s Stamina With Leg Saver! The basic Leg Saver treatments are quite simple. 3 Treat the lung and heart ting points (located on the front coronet band) once, 3 days before a race or event. 3 Treatments are for one hour each. 3 Treatments should be done separately, one after the other. 3 It will take 2 hours to complete both. 3 The following day the horse should be walked for ½ hour to one hour. 3 The morning of the race the lungs should be treated for ½ hour as early as possible (about 8 am). Do not treat the heart. 3 This will increase performance about 4 to 8 lengths, depending on the horse. 3 Always check on the shoulders, hocks, poll & whirlbone to make sure the horse is ready for optimal performance. 3 Always treat the hocks if there is any heat in them at all. A number of trainers have been experimenting with the amount of exercise needed to keep the horse performing at its peak. Here is what we have found: 3 Horses that have their training reduced the week before the treatment are significantly improved over horses that are kept at their regular degree of exercise. They win a lot more money. 3 Reducing the exercise program the week before the treatment produces a much fitter horse. Results show about 80% wins & seconds—mostly wins (rider error caused some of the second place finishes). 3 These treatments reduce stress and strain on the horse’s body (hooves, ankles, tendons, ligaments, knees, hocks and other areas of stress). 3 Protocol for young race horses – treat their heart and lungs once every 2 weeks. This builds stronger horses with tremendous stamina. This will not make them run faster it just makes them finish stronger. This new protocol will give you the best results in your performance horse. Having more stamina down the stretch run results in more wins! Try it with one horse and see the results. I’m reluctant to tell a world-class trainer what to do but this protocol really generates superior results!
