e were moving mares out of a field and they were supposed to turn right and head for the barn, but noooo…..as females sometimes do…..they did the opposite of what was expected and headed for the main house. No big deal….there’s a pen on the other side of the house that will work. About that time, this big, nice mare decides to get curious as to the tarp over the swimming pool. I’m thinking, “I KNOW she won’t try stepping out there”. Just shows you what I know……. I stare in disbelief as the mare WALKS OUT on the tarp over the swimming pool! And of course….her feet break through and she falls in. And of course….it’s the DEEP end of the pool. I jumped off my horse, shewing him away and jerked my jacket off. Why….I don’t really know. Like I was gonna jump in the pool and save her?? She’s thrashing in the water trying to hold her head up while her butt was held up by a seam in the pool cover that was anchored at her flank. She keeps swimming/thrashing, but not going anywhere. I hadn’t a CLUE what to do! About that time one of my partners in crime yelled out, “somebody get a knife”! I thought….”Oh yeah….I got a knife”!! So….I pull out my very tiny, very dull knife and run for the shallow end of the pool and start slicing through the tarp like Christmas wrapping paper towards the mare. By the time I get to her, I’m in water over my head and with boots and spurs on, I’m not exactly dressed for treading water. One of the other guys got a knife and was cutting the last bit to the mare from a seated position on top of the tarp and between the two of us, we got that last seam cut. By this time the mare was pretty well tuckered out but she swam down the channel I’d cut for her and wadded out of the pool on the shallow end. SAVED by a $5 knife!! My adrenaline was pumping so, that it took a little bit for the wind and the 50 degree weather to make me realize I was cold! I’d been asking the Lord for an adventure….but I sure never saw this one coming! Sometimes the simplest things can turn into an event that escalates beyond your control. And sometimes when you see NO POSSIBLE SOLUTION to the scenario, something as simple as a $5 knife can literally save the day!
God uses simple things to do mighty things! In the whole scheme of things, I may be nothing more than a $5 knife…..but if I’m willing to meet the challenge, God can do exceptional
ǯ ǥǤ Ǩ things with me! I like thinking about my value in life as sorta like a water hose. They aren’t very valuable in themselves. Their value is their ability to channel the water. A water hose is worthless if it stays disconnected. My job in life is to simply stay connected to the SOURCE. If I’ll do that…..God will pour through me everywhere I go! Just like my little “pretend knife”. If I’m in God’s “pocket”, He can pull me out and open me up to turn the tide of events! It wasn’t the value of the knife that mattered that day….what mattered was that it was available! Oh…and things were happening fast and furious, but I’m pretty sure I peed while I was in the pool…..just saying.

o you dread turnout out time because your horse crowds you as soon as you open the door? If so, it might be time to take a good hard look at your horse and his ground manners, or lack thereof, as well as your routine. Whether we realize it or not, every single time we handle our horses we’re teaching them good or bad ground manners. What they are learning can ultimately translate to when we ride. Because horses learn by repetition, and our daily routines tend to be repetition as well, good or bad behavior becomes solid over time. Little things like crowding your space when you’re haltering or leading can progress over time. Initially, it might start out simply as your having to take a step back when you put the halter on because your horse has pushed his head into your space. Eventually it turns into ignoring your space entirely. Instead of taking a step back, take the time to make your horse step back at least two steps to reinforce respect of your space.
repetition. Doing repetitive exercises at turn out, such as stopping and backing up, is a great to get your horse to listen to you. Take a few steps forward and then immediately ask your horse to back up a few steps. This is one simple exercise can be done several times on the path to their turnout area. Horses that anticipate are more sensitive to routine. They generally act out because they get excited about the impending turnout, or in some cases coming in. These types of horses are always thinking and are always one step ahead. Horses that tend to anticipate are also more likely to be on the muscle at turnout time, especially if they’ve been up for a few days. Because routine actually causes these horses become antsy about turnout, the best way to deal with them is to change the routine. Instead of walking straight out to the turnout area, set up a scenario where they have to wait and work before they go out. Lateral ground work exercises are good for this type of horse because it
When you’re leading, does your horse stay respectfully at your shoulder and wait on you, or does your horse charge forward dragging you along? If your horse is pulling on you, it’s most certainly time to work on leading. Daily turnout is a great time to work on leading your horse because it gives you a chance to set up consistent training, especially since you’re already leading your horse out anyhow. As mentioned earlier, horses learn by
makes them think. Include some groundwork as often as you can and they’ll soon figure out that turnout time isn’t a mad dash to the gate - they have to take their time. Simple things such as asking your horse to lower his head before haltering can also make a difference with these types of horses. When haltering, take your time and don’t rush. Take a deep breath and just relax, especially if you’re dreading taking

your horse out. Your horse will take a cue from your body language and will start to relax too over time. With horses that anticipate, it’s also good to review even the simple of act of exiting the stall or pasture. When you open the stall door, don’t just mindlessly step out. Wait for a moment. If your horse takes a step forward, ask your horse to back up a step or two. To keep them guessing a little more, you can even ask for a lateral movement of the shoulders or hips. The idea is to get your horse waiting on you and not rushing through the stall door or gate. When you step out into the hallway, ask your horse to stop and wait on you just as you did in the stall. The goal is to keep your horse relaxed and guessing what you’re going to do next. On the way to the turnout area, you can practice the leading exercise mentioned earlier to reset your horse’s mindset and keep him waiting on you. Another helpful exercise is walking extremely slow. These two exercises will quickly help your horse to relax and not anticipate the turnout process. Once through the gate, again take your time in turning your horse loose. Ask him to lower his head and take your time taking the halter off. Another strategy you can use if your horse is full of energy is to work your horse just a few minutes in the turnout area before your turn him loose. Ask him to move his shoulders or hips over, or work on side pass. Make sure you don’t over drill, and be sure to end on a good note. You can use turning them loose as their reward for doing a good job. While it’s easy to get in the habit of rushing through barn chores, especially if you’re running late for work, taking a little extra time and slowing down can have a big impact on your horse’s ground manners. Look for new ways to incorporate groundwork into your daily routine and your horse will have better manners because of it.

ABSCESSES
“ My horse is lame and won’t get up, limping or has broken his leg!â€?‌ WRONG‌.he has an abscess. The horse owner will see their horse out to pasture, unable to bear weight on a limb, which instills panic. To see a horse with a fullblown abscess is quite dramatic. Often he will not bear weight on the affected limb. Usually the hoof will be warm to the touch with a rapid pulse. A certified farrier is knowledgeable about abscesses and can trim out the hoof and use a pair of hoof testers to find the sore spot. Often times the farrier will bore out the abscess to relieve the pressure. It is recommended to soak in warm water and Epsom salts making sure to soak up to the coronet band. With winter weather also comes ideal conditions for abscesses to form. If the hoof becomes too dry it will crack allowing bacteria to travel up into the hoof wall and sole. Too much moisture can cause the same thing if your horse stands around in muddy damp areas. With the southeastern U.S. humidity, the morning dew is enough to cause a horse’s hoof to become too soft
and sponge like. This condition is prime for dirt, bacteria and fungi to be worked through the sole and hoof walls. Once worked in, there is no way out and most of the time it will occur in the front hooves. The grime becomes locked in and begins to fester. The fester begins brewing, creating pus and heat from the rotting flesh locked within, causing great pressure against the hoof wall. This is similar to a bruised finger or toenail on you. Anyone having experience with this can testify as to how unpleasant this is. But climate is hardly the only culprit. Riding a horse over rough, rocky terrain is a leading cause of abscesses. This is worsened if the horse is not properly shod. More of this article is available on our web site under “Helpful Articles.
Stone bruises caused these abscesses that busted out in the sole of the hoof.
These cracks were caused by an abscess that blowout in the hoof wall closer to the coronary band. They are now cleaned out and ready for bonding and shoes to help prevent more cracking and infections. Along with dry conditions, hoof supplements to promote healthy growth, all should be normal in 8-10 months.

scrutinized. “Kind of, Sort of” just didn’t cut it. I really had to strive for perfection. Poles And Cones In many of the challenge tests, poles and cones were set up for the rider to navigate in different gaits. This was helpful in some ways in that it gave us a frame of reference of where to ride. In other ways, it was tricky to keep my horse riding correctly over polls that were spaced at different intervals. Callers Although it was important to be familiar with the particular test that I was riding, every rider was allowed a caller to announce the next maneuver in the test. Having a good caller, that stayed in the rhythm and flow of your ride was vital for success. It also relieves a lot of pressure of trying to memorize a test that can last up to seven or eight minutes. Should a rider go off course, a cowbell is rung and the judge helps the rider find a new starting point. This makes the event very rider-friendly. There’s only a small penalty for this happening twice but getting lost a third time is a dismissal. Bits And Headgear Unlike other disciplines, Cowboy Dressage allows you to ride a horse of any age in a Bosel, Snaffle or Leverage Bit. It is strictly the rider’s preference. You can also ride with a Leverage Bit using two-hands. However, if you start two-handed you must ride the entire test with two-hands. If you begin your test one-handed you must ride the whole test one-handed. Levels For Everyone This weekend I competed in the “Top Hand” Division. This perhaps was the most challenging and difficult test of the weekend. However, there are classes for every level of horse and rider. Youth classes, Novice classes, Amateur and Open classes. There were many classes offered for just those who wanted to walk and jog. Then many more that also included the lope and more challenging maneuvers. Cowboy Dressage Handshake This is an agreement that every rider makes: They will always put the horse’s welfare above any competition or goal. The show management insists, and enforces, that no equipment can be used, or training techniques implement, in the warm-up pen that would not be allowed in the show arena. Although almost every club and association talks about and attempts to put the welfare of the horse first, I have not seen any group practice what they preach any better than Cowboy Dressage Soft Feel Although the technical aspects of each test are critical, there is also a more subtle area that is judged just as importantly. Riders are judged on the “soft feel” that they exhibit while executing each maneuver. That means; riding with light contact without over-flexing the horse. If a horse’s head and neck get too low, or a horse’s nose gets behind the vertical, penalty points are assessed. Without the soft feel that exemplifies harmony, balance and partnership, it is difficult to do well in Cowboy Dressage. Personally, I love the tradition, athleticism and disci-

A
s I write this article, I’m sitting at a horse show. Last night I rode with over thirty other riders in the preliminary round of the Top Hand Competition. I know that I have qualified as one of the top 10 riders. We are now waiting to see who will make the top 5 cut and ride in the finals tomorrow night. I wasn’t judged on how far my horse slid or how fast he could spin. I don’t believe there was even one cow on the premises. This weekend, I’ve tried something brand-new, Cowboy Dressage. This new horsemanship discipline is really taking off. At this show there will be over 900 individual goes with three arenas continuously active for three days. Although this event has its roots in Classical Dressage it has evolved into something very specific unto itself. Its organizers would also want to clarify that this is not “Western dressage”. Cowboy Dressage has developed its own unique set of principles, guidelines, courts and tests. It’s been a huge learning experience for me and has challenged my own horsemanship skills. Below are just a few things that I’ve learned. It’s All About Transitions There were probably over twenty different transitions that I had to execute during my test. Transitioning from the working walk to the free walk, on to the working jog then the free jog, asking for the lope and back down again. And of course, all of these transitions had to happen at a very specific mark on the course. Bending And Straightness Every circle was judged on how well the horses were bent and how consistently they traveled in the circle. Then aligning the horse’s body on straight-lines was also closely

Executing the correct bend, on a ten-meter circle, at the working jog

pline of the Reined Cow Horse. However, Cowboy Dressage has added a new dimension and challenge to my own horsemanship. This weekend I observed riders of many levels riding many different breeds of horses. The common denominator was that each rider was trying to ride with more finesse, feel and accuracy. This is the first Cowboy Dressage show that I have ever attended and I think I can share a pretty objective opinion. It appears to me that horses and riders are both winners in this deal. Cowboy Dressage is an opportunity for any rider, at any level, to bump up their horsemanship game and refine their skills. It’s also a place where each horse can step up to a higher level of performance without being compromised physically or mentally. Here’s the rest of the story: I did indeed make it back to compete in the top 5! We rode a mystery test and then had to switch horses with another top 5 contestant and re-ride the test. My horse Whiz secured the Championship win for a veteran Cowboy Dressage competitor, which was beautifully executed. Whiz and I placed fourth, which my wife assures me is more than respectable for my first endeavor with a brand new discipline, having entered the toughest class, at their year-end finals. I had fun this weekend and learned a lot. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to do it again. You can find out more by going to cowboydressageworld.com
