RODEO…
STILL STANDING TALL!

O
f all the great array of sports in our nation, so loved by the masses, I am SO PROUD of the sport of RODEO! Football, basketball and baseball long ago ceased to open up their events with prayer, how is it we are surprised they now openly show disdain for our flag that stands for the very freedom these athletes enjoy? Rodeo STILL opens with prayer as well as giving honor to our nation’s flag and those who have fought and died to preserve our freedom. Our nation’s forefathers rightfully said that freedom is a personal right that comes from God. Governments can’t give freedom. Governments can protect it or stamp it out, but freedom itself is a given by God. If we dishonor the God Who’s desire is for us to live in freedom, is it such a shock that freedom itself becomes endangered? This alone is reason enough for me to love rodeo. Patriotism is not simply caught. It must be taught and instilled into each generation. With an entire generation knowing nothing about honor or selfsacrifice, is it any surprise that we’re seeing such a display of blatant disrespect and utter disregard for what came at such a high cost to former generations? If for no other reason than this, I would love rodeo because it honors the honorable. It displays to the younger generations a respect and honor for freedom. There is an anointing on our National Anthem and when it’s presented with passion it engulfs the entire audience with a surge of heartfelt emotions. How many times have we experienced a knot in our throat and tears swelling up in our eyes during an opening with Old Glory carried proudly horseback and Lee Greenwood singing “God Bless The USA”? I ESPECIALLY love it when an opening incorporates the military, landing in the arena via parachute with a huge American flag as men run to keep her from hitting the ground. A swell of pride envelopes me every time. Rodeo in itself is a sport requiring individual courage. In rodeo, you succeed or fail on your own. There is no team to help you carry the weight of discouragement during the hard times. You’re on your own sweetheart. Not to mention the very fact that with each and every performance the contestants face the high chance of injury. Even death is a possibility. That in itself requires a courageously different mindset. Rodeo fans and contestants recognize and appreciate patriotism more so, because they recognize its cost. Rodeo demands individualism. The socialistic attitude that permeates this
unpatriotic fad invading the empty heads of society is based on a social mindset that rejects individualism. A mindset that has no regard for individuality in itself breeds a disrespect for other people’s accomplishments. Therefore it feeds into the masses a sense of “right” to tear down what other people have paid a price to build. It is very literally a cowardice spirit that eventually expresses itself in preying on the very young, the elderly, the helpless. It’s a mindset that demands privileges while rejecting the responsibilities. For these reasons I will not be watching any sport that tramples on the very freedom our fathers paid such a high price to hand down to us. But rodeo? I will gladly support this sport that stands tall amid the “knee takers”! Rodeo… I am so proud of you!!

Hay! CBD Not for Horses, USEF Warns
As of September 1, 2019, horses competing under USEF rules that test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, and other cannabimimetics are in violation of GR4. The FEI also includes the group as prohibited substances.
US Equestrian warns horse owners that CBD positives will result in equine drug violations this fall. So, just say NEIGH! That’s because USEF Equine Drugs and Medications Rules prohibit cannabidiols (CBD) and their metabolites.
CBD detections prior to that date will receive warnings. They will be considered a “Prior” violation if there are additional detections of cannabinoids following September 1.
So, why is the Federation making the announcement now? It comes after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and declassified it as a Schedule I controlled substance. The definition includes hemp that doesn’t contain more than 0.3% THC and plants that produce cannabidiol oil (CBD). According to US Equestrian, both natural and synthetic CBD, “are likely to affect horse performance” due to its reported anti-anxiety effects. Additionally, the press release adds that the substance is no different than other legitimate therapeutics that affect behavior in horses, although it provides no support of the claim. Additionally, GR411 Conditions For Therapeutic Administrations of Prohibited Substances don’t apply for cannabinoids, so there’s no medication reporting form. US Equestrian notes that analytical methods are being implemented to detect CBD and similar cannabinoids. Equestrians subject to testing under the World Anti-Doping Code should view the athlete regulations pertaining to cannabinoids

Raising Chickens There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. The eggs are a real temptation—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs, and better for baking, too. The shells, along with the chicken poop, can be tossed right into the compost pile. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those yummy farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Choosing a Breed Heritage Breeds: The Livestock Conservancy defines a Heritage chicken as a natural breeding chicken that has a slow growth rate and can live a long, productive outdoor life. The breed must also conform to the American Poultry Associations standard for that breed. Egg Laying Breeds: These hens have been bred to produce large quantities of eggs through their short production lifetimes. Leghorns are a good example of prolific egg producers as are Australorps. Dual Purpose Breeds: These hens are the best of both worlds in utility terms. They are productive in the egg department and also grow large enough to be used as a meat bird later on in their life. Meat Breeds: As the name suggests these breeds of chicken are bred for meat purposes. They grow very, very quickly. They put on weight at an alarming rate and are ready for slaughter at around nine weeks.

If you are new to chickens, I don’t recommend that you get hatching eggs unless you really know what you are doing. Although incubation is fairly straightforward, there definitely is an art to it. Chicks: This is the most used and wise choice for novices. You can select which breed(s) you want and when you want them. You typically get chicks at one day old. Pullets: Pullets are birds aged between four to six months. The chicks have been reared to adulthood and are usually sold at point of lay, meaning the pullet is about to lay her first egg anytime soon! Adults: Adult hens are more difficult to come by as breeders like to move birds out before they get too old since they eat more. A common source of adult hens is animal shelters or rescue sanctuaries.
Preparing the Chicken Coop Chickens are not very demanding when it comes to houses. They don’t need running water, electricity or carpets. A modified basic wooden box will do in a pinch, but there are a few crucial things you need for your flock to ensure their safety and wellbeing. (see illustration on next page)

Hen Morning and Evening Routines Unfortunately most people lead busy lives and don’t have all day to tend to their chickens. In the morning you will want to let your chickens out of the coop, check on their feed and water, and have a general look around to make sure everyone is ok. When the sun comes down, it’s time to start the evening routine. This will include locking your girls safely inside the coop and also collecting the eggs (if you haven’t already done so). Of course this is the ‘bare minimum’ of caring for your girls. There will also be weekly tasks like cleaning the coop and tending to the nesting boxes…
Common Chick Problems Unfortunately it’s likely that at some point during your chickens’ life they will have some sort of problem, whether that is broodiness, predators or bullying. There are several common problems that occur when you have chickens. If you aren’t prepared for them they can seem frightening or overwhelming. Molting Molting is the process of losing all old, worn out feathers and replacing them with new plumage. It happens to all birds VOLUME 6 | ISSUE 9 2020

including roosters. Some birds can take up to two years to complete a molt, but the humble chicken is usually done in three months. Stopped Egg Laying We all love our feathered friends, but one of the main reasons people keep them is for the eggs. When they stop laying eggs it can be alarming; Broodiness What is a broody hen? You will know it when you see it! She will sit in the nest constantly, if anyone approaches her she will grumble, squawk and puff herself up, she may give you an almighty peck too. Bullying The pecking order is so called for a reason. Each and every bird in a flock will have their own place. Those at the top get to eat first, those at the bottom eat last. It is a very simple but effective hierarchy so that all members know their position. Bullying does occur to a small degree each day because of this. If a chicken goes out of turn she gets a quick peck to the head to remind her of her status. Predators Even if you live in the middle of the city, there will be a chicken predator in your neighborhood. Foxes, coyotes, raccoons and the ‘pet’ dog down the road will likely all want chicken dinner and these are only the ground predators. The Importance of ... Communicating with the folks back home while you’re camping seems like the last thing that you would want to do. After all, we’ve left technology behind to embrace the wilderness. There’s no better feeling than being “off the grid”, disconnected from the outside world. However, there are exceptions to this; you may have health problems, family that needs checking on, or you may need up to date information for the trip home. “While in the Pasayten wilderness, along the Canadian border, where cell coverage is just a dream we noticed a thick smoke plume, and haze started filling the basin we were camped in. The plume was to the southeast which was also the direction of our only route back to civilization. If the road were closed our weeklong trip might turn into something much longer. We needed wildfire info ASAP in order to make an informed decision on the safest option.” INFORMATION IS POWER - In these circumstances, having access to reliable communications while camping in remote locations is not only a good idea, but a necessity. “I sent a message to our emergency contact at home to see if they could find any wildfire info. Within minutes we had a situation report on the fire and where it was heading (across the only road into the trailhead). With that info we were able to make a plan – break camp at first light and head for the trailhead and immediately depart for home. After receiving the fire info I was able to share that data with some hikers camped nearby so that they could make informed decisions for themselves.” Backcountry communicators are, at their best, lifesaving devices that allow you to check in with friends and family back home and reach emergency services in a pinch, even when you’re far off the grid. Here’s a breakdown of the devices we’ve used with success. “By the time we made it to the trailhead the next afternoon the smoke was getting thicker. A quick set of messages on the SatPaq let us know that the road out was still clear but the wind forecast had the fire line heading across it. We needed to leave ASAP. And we did!”

And the surrounding area was crisscrossed with red streaks from aerial fire retardant drops.” Spot X – Self contained communications. Western Dressage: Preparing to Show By Lynn Palm
D
ressage is for every rider and any horse, no matter what age, level of education, and what your goals may be. It is simply a natural training method for the horse and rider that leads to great success. So if you are a western rider, dressage training will help you bring out the best in your horse and you as a rider. Western Dressage is a huge step in the right direction to improve the western rider’s education and skills. Be careful if you try to ride a dressage test; you will get hooked because it is so much fun. 1.
Now that you have studied some of my suggestions about getting yourself ready for the show ring, let’s focus now on the horse. Keep the following in mind as you prepare for your first Western Dressage show.
2. Train with patience and understanding about your horse as an individual and not just comparing him to other horses. 3. Understand what is required in each level and test. Know your horse’s confidence level and how he will handle what would be asked for in a test. Aim for willingness and consistency. 4. Evaluate your horse’s fitness. Become educated so you know what is your horse’s best weight and muscle tone. 5. Evaluate your horse’s soundness, both his overall soundness and the soundness of his legs and feet. Know and work closely with your vet and blacksmith so that your horse is healthy and sound. It takes a great deal of knowledge and time to make sure your blacksmith is trimming or shoeing your horse correctly and for
7. Don’t give in to peer pressure. Don’t let others, such as family members, friends, trainer/coach, or other competitors talk you into thinking that you need to do more then you are capable of doing or want to do. Don’t attempt to reach goals your horse isn’t ready to handle. Stay on a realistic path and set achievable goals. 8. Prepare for your show at home. Find out exactly what you need to do in order to sufficiently warm up to practice for the level you plan to show in. 9. Prepare the warm-up you will do before you enter the ring. Practice what to do and what direction to turn down the center line to start your test. 10. Prepare your tack and clothes ahead of time, and know how long it takes you to get ready. You can rehearse at home. 11. Make packing lists for horse feeding and care, tack to show in, and clothes you wear to compete in. This will keep you from worrying that you’ll forget something. 12. Make travel plans and time lines of when you are going and for how long. 13. Prepare your vehicle and trailer for safe travels. Please refer to our traveling DVDS available on the website. 14. Decide with confidence, excitement and what I call “the eye of the tiger,” to go to the show and have a great time and success.
