Fitting The Correct Bit If you are having problems with finding a bit that is suitable for your horse there are a few steps that you need follow to get the right bit in its mouth. First you need to make sure that it doesn’t have any mouth, back or neck problems. No bit will help if the pain or discomfort lies in the mouth, back or neck. The most important part of fitting the correct bit is finding the right mouth piece for a particular horse. Here it is what the horse is doing with its head that tells you what bit is needed.

• The horse sticks his nose up in the air the moment the reins are taken up. This is the horse telling you that it is experiencing pain in its mouth. If using a Snaffle, you need to change to a threepiece bit such as a Control Plate. • The horse shakes its head, which means that he does not want tongue pressure. From the Snaffle or Control Plate, you would go softer to the Happy Tongue, designed specifically to take pressure off the tongue. • The horse bringing its chin up to its chest in an effort to evade the bit is a sure sign of too much bit for the horse and it trying to relieve the pressure. The solution is to either ride on a looser rein, or use a softer bit. From the Snaffle one could use the Lock Up. • The horse that pokes his nose forward, trying to pull the reins out of the rider's hands in an effort to relieve the pressure of the bit. Once again the solution being to use a softer bit. We have also introduced colour coding of our bits to make this process easier.

The next step is to measure the horse's mouth. This is a crucial aspect of fitting the correct bit. Using a bit measure or straight rod, put it in the horse's mouth and lift it to the correct place in the mouth, and mark the bar on both sides just outside the lip crease.

This measurement can then be used to determine the size of the bit required. The bit size will differ depending on the type of mouth piece required. Most horses are fitted with bits that are too tight and this just adds more pressure points. With a fixed mouth piece bit the size required is the measured size, and with the single and double break bits this should be the measured size plus 10 mm to take into account the set. In addition to this add 5mm if the bit has a loose ring cheek piece. Nothing additional needs to be added for fixed cheek pieces. Once you have established the mouthpiece and the width, then you have to establish which cheek piece would be suitable. This is dictated to by various things including the discipline the rider is participating in and the skill level of the rider.

The Barrell joint limits the nut cracker action and spreads the usual pressure over a larger area.When the rein is used this mouthpiece wraps across the tongue creating tongue pressure and taking pressure off the bars due to the lock up action. Please note appearances may be deceiving, this bit joint is stronger than the Elliptical as pressure is more concentrated on the tongue as this joint is smaller.

Lock Up The Lock Up snaffle removes the nut cracker action of the conventional snaffle, meaning it will bear less pressure on each side of the horses jaw called the bars.

Segundo The Segundo alleviates tongue pressure while keeping an even pressure on the bars of the mouth, encouraging the horse to stay light to the contact. Horses find it difficult to lean on this mouthpiece or put their tongue over the bit.

Snaffle Our Snaffle mouthpiece is popular due to the curved mouthpiece which distributes pressure more evenly over tongue and bars. With the offset centre link it will reduce nutcraker action and pressure points on the tongue.

This differs from a Dr Bristol which sits horizontlaly with the edge of the plate on the tongue.

Elliptical The Elliptical is a 45 mm lozenge, it is stronger than the Control Plate due to it having a smaller surface area. Consequently, a horse using his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control, will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control.

Colin Miles The Colin Miles is a great schooling bit with a 55mm centre piece creating greater tongue pressure. The rings give the horse something to play with and help keep the horses attention on the bit. This particular joint exerts more pressure than the Control Plate or Elliptical.

Waterford The Waterford bit has many smooth flexible bumps or bubbles, which spreads the pressure over many points making it a light mouthpiece. The greater flexibility discourages a horse from leaning on it. The Waterford bit is a good choice for a horses that leans, it also promotes mouthing and salivation. The Waterford is usually worn ¼" ½" longer than your traditional mouthpiece in order to curl around the lips and maximise the effect.

Buster Roller The Buster Roller is a great bit for schooling, the link in the middle is shortened to 40mm increasing bar and tongue pressure making the bit sharper than conventional link bits. Best suited for a horse with a low head carriage and which leans on the bit. The increased pressure on the bar will lift the head and the roller will increase pressure on the tongue bringing the chin in.

4 Ring A Ring Cheekpiece introduces poll pressure as well creating leverage on the mouthpiece. The 4 Ring has 2 rings on the bottom to adjust the amount of poll pressure and leverage you want.

American Gag The American Gag has a long curved shank with rings at either end. This setup creates a lot of poll pressure and leverage on the bit.

Bomber Hybrid The Bomber Hybrid is a combination of a mechanical hackamore and American Gag, giving it the combined effects of the hackamore and the bit. Ideal for strong sensitive mouthed horses as it distributes pressure uniformly on the nose, mouth and the poll.

The reins can be attached at various positions to allow for varying degrees of leverage. The amount of movement in the mouthpiece can be altered by moving the stopper above the mouthpiece. The nose piece is padded for the horse's comfort and a nylon curb strap is included. Care must be taken, as with any mechanical hackamore, that the noseband sits above the nasal bone.

Nathe "Nathe mouthpieces give a more sensitive feeling to the horse's mouth but at the same time are soft and strong with flexible steel wire. Brett Warren The Brett Warren is primarily a racing bit. The cheekpiece assists with the flexing of the head to prevent drifting, while the center bar creates more positive poll pressure.

Curb Gag The Curb Gag uses the concept of a Rope gag but instead of applying poll pressure, it is used to apply curb pressure from the second/bottom rein. Although poll pressure is not totally removed as there is a similar action to the Ring or Drop Cheek on the bit/top rein. A ring can be added to the bottom to create more poll pressure.

Dawson Double The Dawson Double comprises two bits like a double bridle but it does not have a curb bit and rather makes use of two snaffle bits. The Dawson is 20mm narrower than the Snaffle and sits behind it in the mouth.

Double Bridle A double bridle is a bridle that has two bits and four reins. One bit is the Bradoon, is a modified snaffle bit that is smaller in diameter and has smaller bit rings than a traditional snaffle, and it is adjusted so that it sits above and behind the Weymouth bit.

Eggbutt Bradoon The Eggbutt Bradoon prevents pinching of the lips and give a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth. The release is slower and also introduces some poll pressure.

Loose Ring Bradoon The Loose Ring Bradoon allows for immediate release and relief from tongue and bar pressure which will reset the bit in the horses mouth.

Small Ring Gag Bradoon The Small Ring Gag Bradoon is stronger than the usual Loose Ring Bradoon and Eggbutt Bradoon as the ropes going through the rings create leverage which will exert more pressure through the mouthpiece whilst at the same time introducing more poll pressure.

Weymouth The Weymouth, or curb bit, in a double bridle consists of a mouthpiece with shanks and a curb chain.

The Weymouth works on several parts of a horse's head and mouth. The bit mouthpiece acts on the bars, tongue and roof of the mouth. The shanks add leverage and place pressure on the poll via the crownpiece of the bridle, to the chin groove via the curb chain, and, especially with a "loose jaw" shank, may act on the sides of the mouth and jaw.

Foward Port The Foward Port places more pressure on the bars, but provides room for the tongue.

Douglas Gag The Dee Ring shape is very similar in action to the Eggbutt , it will prevent pinching of the lips and gives a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth. The release is slower and some slight poll pressure is introduced. The Douglas Gag is the gag version of the Dee Ring is stronger and will create more leverage on the mouthpiece whilst at the same time introducing more poll pressure. Drafter The Drafter cheekpieces lies flat against the horse's face giving a more solid feel against the side of the face, while preventing pinching of the lips and the bit being pulled through the mouth. The mouthpiece is quite fixed in the mouth and concentrates pressure on the bars but the loose rings allow for a quick release.

Drop Cheek The Drop Cheek has an Eggbutt like ring at the mouthpiece for the rein, with an upper cheek that has a ring at its end, to which the cheekpiece of the bridle is attached. The mouthpiece does not slide on its ring resulting in only slight poll pressure. The cheekpieces lies flat against the horse's face, and the mouthpiece is quite fixed in the mouth and concentrates pressure on the bars. Hitchcock The Hitchcock causes the bit to move upwards in the horse's mouth when used because the reins are attach to the cheekpieces of the bridle via the pulleys on each bit ring. This is an excellent schooling bit for horses that jerk at the reins, lean on the bit or are heavy.

The Hitchcock can be made with any of the mouthpieces in our Loose Ring range.

JW The JW is for horses that dislike having a bit in their mouth as it provides more space in the mouth than conventional bits. The bars also move the rings away from the side of the horse's face and prevents pinching. It also prevents the horse getting its tongue over the bit. The JW provides three different positions to cater to various disciplines.

With the large rings turned down and the reins attached to the large rings is the recommended position for general day to day riding, barrel racing, campdrafting, horse racing and dressage training.

This position provides safety in barriers for racing. The bit will sit with the bars almost horizontal when set up like this.

With the large rings turned up it allows for the reins to be attatched to either the upper large rings or the lower small rings. Attached to the upper large rings provides a remedial position that prevents chafing of the mouth. It also elevates the bar in the mouth which prevents the horse getting its tongue over the bar and give more tongue relief than the ring down position. Attached to the small lower rings it allows curb pressure to be applied. Ideal in situations where extra leverage is required. In this position the bars will be almost vertical.

Kimberley Dee The Kimberley Dee cheekpiece prevents pinching of the lips and give a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth. The release is slower than a Loose Ring and also introduces some poll pressure.

Kimblewick As with the Pelham, the action of the Kimblewick is dependent upon the position of the riders hands. The rein slides on the Dee shaped bit ring.

If the hands are lowered prior to pressure being applied to the reins, the rein will slide about an inch and the bit will assume roughly a 45째 angle in the mouth. Causing the mouthpiece to act in a downward and backward motion on the lower jaw, this is complemented by a downward pressure on the poll, giving the bit a lowering action. Stockman Long Shank The Stockman Long Shank is a leverage bit, meaning that it multiplies the pressure applied by the rider.

The longer the shank, the less force is needed on the reins to provide a given amount of pressure on the mouth but the longer shank bits must rotate back further before applying pressure on the horse's mouth than shorter shanked bits. Therefore, the horse has more warning in a long shanked bit, allowing it to respond before any significant pressure is applied to its mouth, than it would in a shorter足shanked bit. In this way, a longer shank can allow better communication between horse and rider, without increasing severity.

TÂRing The T Ring cheekpiece, will have the same effect as the traditional Dee in so much as, it will prevent pinching on the sides of the mouth, however the extended pins above and below the bit, firstly prevent the bit being pulled through the mouth and secondly have the effect of guiding the horses head which is great for schooling and training purposes.

The Loose Rings make the bit less fixed in the mouth which encourages mouthing and acceptance of the bit, while retaining the turning advantages of the full cheek. They also allow for a quicker release of the bit. Control Plate 45 The Bombers Control Plate is set at 45Â° to follow the contour of the horses tongue. Consequently, a horse who uses his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control, will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control. This differs from a Dr Bristol which sits horizontlaly with the edge of the plate on the tongue.

The main difference however is that instead of the additional rings at the bottom it has an extended shank with a ring on the end, this shank is bent and set to run at 45째 the effect this has is to ease up the poll pressure and leverage on the mouthpiece.

Taylor Chain The Taylor Chain bit is has an action between a Waterford and a Snaffle. The Short length of twisted chain allows it to take the shape of the tongue and as a result distributing the pressure across the tongue like a Waterford. The ends the mouth piece act more like a snaffle exerting pressure on the bars.

The Round Twist creates more pressure points on the bars making it a stronger bit.

Buster Roller Square Twist The Buster Roller link in the middle is shortened to 40mm which increases bar and tongue pressure making the bit sharper than conventional link bits. The increased pressure on the bar will lift the head and the roller will increase pressure on the tongue bringing the chin in. Best suited for a horse with a low head carriage and which leans on the bit. The Square Twist will create more pressure points on the mouthpiece.

Mullen The Mullen is a strong bit which creates direct pressure on the tongue which will in turn create direct pressure on the bars. Used for a strong older horse and will also bring the head down.

Watson Ring Pelham The Watson Ring Pelham is like a regular Pelham , but the snaffle rings have been moved so that they are connected through the center of the Mullen mouthpiece and now act as loose rings. The bit gives the impression of being part of a double bridle setup without using two bits. Mullen mouthpiece with a leverage cheek: This combination gives very definite downward tongue pressure. As the cheek turns, the mouthpiece of the bit pushes it down into the lower jaw. This is good for a horse with ample lower jaw capacity that needs to be ridden in something stronger than a snaffle and dislikes, or does not need, a joint or a port. The Pelham was developed as a combination between the snaffle and curb bit. It consists of a mouthpiece, shanks with two rings per side, a curb chain and to be used correctly, two reins.

Williams The Williams cheekpiece assists with the flexing of the head while the center bar creates more positive poll pressure.
