WELCOME TO OUR ELEVENTH ANNUAL SUN COUNTRY BULL & FEMALE SALE We would like to welcome you to our 11th annual sale. Since the day we decided to establish this sale, our goal has been to produce sound, productive and easily managed breeding stock that can work for commercial and purebred producers. We maintain our cow herds on a commercial basis, and we are constantly culling our herds to make our genetics more consistent and predictable. The past few years have been a roller coaster in this industry between mother nature and the marketplace making corrections, but I think today’s beef producers have stayed very optimistic about the future. The sky is not falling and the future is definitely very bright for the beef industry. It is even more important today to produce the highest quality product we can. Nothing holds its value like quality in this business. We are also seeing more and more Shorthorn genetics being used in beef herds in Canada and the US. There is a strong demand for Shorthorn F1 replacements and right now, there is room for many more to be produced before this demand is filled. We have also dug deep into our replacement heifer pens to make this part of the sale the best quality we can. There are heifers being offered that normally would not be on offer and they represent our best cow families and sire genetics that have been gathered from around the world. We are welcoming Rylan and Todd Knupp, of Diamond Creek Shorthorns as a guest consignor this year. They established their Shorthorn herd a few years ago, and are offering 4 sound bulls to our sale. The Knupp family is very enthusiastic about their Shorthorns and we are pleased to have them join us. This sale will be broadcast live by DV Auctions at www.dvauctions.com . Of course, it is always best if you can attend our sale in person, but if you cannot, you can still watch the sale and bid from your home computer. As we get closer to the sale date we will be posting additional information on our websites and Facebook pages. We will also be posting links to short videos of the sale offering that will help you see the offering and how they have developed since the pictures were taken in mid January. We will again be offering to take our bulls and heifers back to our farms and keep them for a reasonable time until shipping arrangements are made. We hope you can make it on March 6th. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and visit with other cattle producers. Grant Alexander (for the Sun Country group)

SUN COUNTRY PHILOSOPHY... • We develop our bulls for optimum growth … not maximum growth. The bulls in this sale will be athletic, sound and ready to work. Each contributor has culled their bulls on soundness and only the best are being offered. Each animal has been selected for this sale on its own merit and they all have to meet our expectations first.

• We will provide useful information on the sale offering. Because our sale has moved earlier in March, all bulls born prior to January 1, 2017 will be semen evaluated and have passed the test by a licenced Vetrinarian. Bulls born in 2017, will have a physical breeding soundness exam and will be deemed likely to pass a semen evaluation . All bulls will be semen tested prior to shipment. • All buyers are encouraged to purchase insurance on the bulls in order to protect your investment. If the bulls are returning to our farms for a period of time before shipping/delivery, they MUST be insured to protect your investment. • We believe in customer service. We will try to make your bull and heifer buying experience as good as possible. We will, wherever possible, assist in arranging transportation of your purchases. • We will keep your purchases free of charge until April 15th, after which you will be charged for the cost of the feed consumed (unless previous arrangements have been made with the seller). Please read our bull warranty and, if you have any questions, please ask any of the owners. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. • Every bull selling is guaranteed to be free of the TH and PHA defects. They have either been tested or verified free by pedigree. • Nobody knows these bulls and their backgrounds as well as the owners do. We would be pleased to answer any questions you have in a honest and no pressure manner. Once you have the information you need, can make the best decision on what bulls or heifers will work best for your herd.

Here is a son of HC Bedrock 73B who sold for $14,000 in our 2016 sale to Langco, Viking, AB and Rockdell, Lone Rock, SK. We were so impressed with our Bedrock calves, we used him on our heifers again last spring. Visitors have said that 68D is even better than his sire was at the same age. If he breeds even close to Bedrock, this bull will be a superior herd bull. He is moderate framed, thick and well muscled. Born unassisted from a two year old heifer with a birth weight of 85 lbs.

This ET Pioneer son from a beautiful cow purchased from Huberdale Farms, that comes from one of the oldest cow families in the breed, the Queen of Beauty’s. He has added length and has great legs and feet. BW 90 lbs.

Easy Street was Reserve Senior Bull Calf Champion at Agribition last fall. He has been a favorite since birth and combines thickness and volume with lots of eye appeal. Several people have said that he could sire some excellent show steers. We tend to agree and think his daughters will be pretty special as well. Eastwood was 1st in class at Agribition. The six previous calves from his dam have averaged $5300 in this sale. Eastwood is more moderate framed than some in the sale but he has the overall mass that his dam stamps on every calf she has. He also has that beautiful color that is so popular with so many people. Often when a calf is first born and still wet, it is hard to picture them as a bull... And sometimes you just know! Exquisite was that guy. When Kim partnered to buy his sire, ACC Fairest Faye 14Z was the first cow I thought of for him. 9E continued to develop and impress us all throughout the summer and fall - the top, hindquarter, length of spine, testicular development and all that great hair!! He was Champion Shorthorn in the Semex President’s Classic as well as class winner, Senior Bull Calf Champion and Reserve National Champion Bull 2017. We were truly humbled by all the interest and positive comments we received on this guy. BW 104 lbs.

This bull’s dam, ACC 2A, has produced one of our top bulls now for three years in a row! Her heifer calf this year (sired by Saskvalley Ultra 12J) is definitely one that will be staying here to continue the powerful “Baroness” cow family. 2A’s first two calves have been our high selling bulls... Both to Tyler May. This guy ranks up with both those two in terms of quality. With the pedigree behind him, we truly believe he will be a big time breeding bull. I know we have said this before, but, His maternal grand-dam-DAN 31L had the perfect udder at 12 years of age. 2A is following close in her footsteps. BW 94 lbs.

Second in class at the 2017 National Shorthorn Show. BW 79 lbs.

We always talk about the maternal side of the heifer’s pedigree here, and this super-tank female has definitely had the “cow” from day one. Long, deep, a ton of top and an awesome hair coat. 22E was also second in class at the 2017 National Shorthorn Show. She would be a perfect choice for a first time showman, while making a competitive female and a super cow thereafter. BW 93 lbs.

Here is a heifer that we have mixed emotions about selling. Her dam was sold to a commercial herd, and when we seen the job she was doing, we purchased her back.We have a few daughters of Ruffian here and we thought enough of them that we flushed ACC Candy’s Winegum 14W to him. This heifer will be a producer like her dam. BW 108 lbs.

Out of a top producing, moderate framed Northern Legend daughter. Frimley Wedgewood Clare 2W led off the Diamond Production sale in the fall of 2013, and she was easily our first choice that day. In December 2017, she headed back home to Diamond Shorthorns to enter their flush program. We are anxious to see these Beat The Heat heifers mature into momma cows. BW 84 lbs.

Whether it’s a purebred or crossbred heifer, our General 4U daughters have one thing in common- they are all flat out good. This heifer is going to make her new owners some serious $$. BW 96 lbs.

It is a hard decision to let this heifer go- but she offers endless opportunity for her new owner. She has the ideal blue colour throughout... All while being deep sided, long bodied and thick made. Her dam is also a beautiful blue roan with a picture perfect udder. 3E is show broke and dog quiet! Take her out this year or watch her mature into a top female in your herd. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to acquire a female with Diamond First Elsie 1F and JTPH Beat The Heat in her pedigree. BW 106 lbs.

The “new” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation is now finally completed and you will notice a difference between today’s EPDs and those in past years. These EPDs were completed by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi- breed genetic evaluation. These EPDS now have the same “base” as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds. As a result, our EPDs can now be compared with these breeds. This means that bull and female buyers can search for genetics from multiple breeds and compare the performance profiles against one another.

Birth Weight (BW)

At the basic level, birth weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease, but the emphasis on birth weight can be overdone. Economically, over selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. Use BW EPD in conjunction with calving ease. Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weights and calving ease.

Weaning Weights (WW)

Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. Finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success.

Yearling Weight (YW)

This trait is economically important since it is more indicative of growth potential through market weights taken early in the animals life. Single trait selection for YW can lead to serious problems that can affect bottom line profit. Mature must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. YW EPDs can be very influential if you understand your environment conditions or if you are retaining ownership in your calves from birth to slaughter.

A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

When we saw the first Free Spirit calves he immediately became our senior herd sire. His calves are thick and moderate framed and have been born easily. We have sold the European semen rights to a group of Irish breeders and Australian semen rights have sold to Sprys Shorthorns. Free Spirit is siring excellent calves of both sexes, and we feel they are one of the best sire groups we have ever produced.

Blue Jeans was a high selling bull in the 2016 Who’s Your Daddy sale as he checked all the boxes for soundness and commercially oriented traits. He has sired an excellent set of sons and daughters here in his first calf crop. His calves are even more impressive as they get older. His first calf crop was born 100% unassisted… just how we like them to come!

How Much Can you Afford to Pay for a Better Bull? Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X Number of cows bred to him each year X Number of years to keep the bull X Expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull that will add an additional 30 lbs to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and if you sell the calves at $2.50/ lb 30X 25 = 750 lbs x 4 years=3000 additional lbs X $2.50/ lb = $7500.00 This bull is worth $7500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put in your own figures. Source: Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association

If leaving your bull in our care we strongly encourage you as the new owner to insure him. Insurance: A representative of a major insurance company will be present to care for insuring cattle. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal. Announcements: Changes of information contained in this catalogue relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Health: All cattle will be in excellent health. Breeder’s Guarantee: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Retained Interest: In the event that an owner wishes to reserve the right to collect semen from any bull in the sale, it will be announced prior to the sale and from the auction block as well. Semen will be collected at the buyer`s convenience and at the seller`s expense, and it will only be available for use in the seller`s herd. Liability: Neither owners, sale manager, clerks, nor anyone connected with the sale assumes any responsibility, legal or otherwise for damage of any kind. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.

Bull Warranty We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull, capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for any physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore, we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.
