WELCOME TO OUR 12TH ANNUAL SUN COUNTRY BULL & FEMALE SALE We would like to welcome you to our 12th annual sale. Since the day we decided to establish this sale, our goal has been to produce sound, productive and easily managed breeding stock that can work for commercial and purebred producers alike. Since starting this sale, over 90 % of our bulls have sold to commercial producers and it was one of our goals to be able to provide Shorthorn genetics to a wide base of commercial producers. I am very pleased to say that we continue to see relatively strong cattle markets, despite many areas of Western Canada experiencing wide spread drought conditions for the past couple of years. With higher costs of feed supplies, easy fleshing, sound genetics is more important than ever. Producing the highest quality product we can is important, as nothing holds its value more than quality. Demand for Shorthorn F1 females is a market that is relatively undeveloped yet, as we find that many of our commercial bull buyers plan on keeping their heifers from these bulls, as replacements in their own herds. A few years ago, we decided to add some replacement heifers to this sale. This has been a very positive decision, and these heifers have been popular with commercial and purebred producers as well. We are pleased to have another excellent set of replacements in this year’s sale offering as well. We are very pleased to have DV Auctions providing live broadcast of our sale again this year. It will be broadcast at www.dvauctions. com. It is always best if you can attend the sale in person, but if you can’t, you can still watch the sale and bid from your home computer. Also, as usual, we will have a group of very knowledgeable sale representatives who will be ready to give you their honest opinion and even handle your bids if you wish them to do so. The bulls and heifers offered in this year’s sale is one of the strongest sets we have ever offered in this sale. The quality is very deep so plan to spend some time going through them and selecting which ones are best suited to help your herd. As we get closer to sale day, we will be posting additional information on our websites and facebook pages. We will also be posting short videos of the sale cattle closer to sale day so you can see how they developed since they were pictured in mid January. We are again offering to take these bulls and heifers back to our farms and keep them for a reasonable length of time until shipping arrangements can be made. We hope we will see you on March 5th. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and visit with other cattle producers. Grant Alexander (for the Sun Country group)

SUN COUNTRY PHILOSOPHY... • We develop our bulls for optimum growth … not maximum growth. The bulls in this sale will be athletic, sound and ready to work. Each contributor has culled their bulls on soundness and only the best are being offered. Each animal has been selected for this sale on its own merit and they all have to meet our expectations first.

• We will provide useful information on the sale offering. Because our sale has moved earlier in March, all bulls born prior to January 1, 2018 will be semen evaluated and have passed the test by a licenced Vetrinarian. Bulls born in 2018, will have a physical breeding soundness exam and will be deemed likely to pass a semen evaluation . All bulls will be semen tested prior to shipment. • All buyers are encouraged to purchase insurance on the bulls in order to protect your investment. If the bulls are returning to our farms for a period of time before shipping/delivery, they MUST be insured to protect your investment. • We believe in customer service. We will try to make your bull and heifer buying experience as good as possible. We will, wherever possible, assist in arranging transportation of your purchases. • We will keep your purchases free of charge until April 15th, after which you will be charged for the cost of the feed consumed (unless previous arrangements have been made with the seller). Please read our bull warranty and, if you have any questions, please ask any of the owners. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. • Every bull selling is guaranteed to be free of the TH and PHA defects. They have either been tested or verified free by pedigree. • Nobody knows these bulls and their backgrounds as well as the owners do. We would be pleased to answer any questions you have in a honest and no pressure manner. Once you have the information you need, can make the best decision on what bulls or heifers will work best for your herd.

The dam of Focus was purchased in our 2017 herd reduction sale by Tommy Staunton, in Ireland. She has remained in our herd and we have collected embryos from her to send to him. Focus is her first calf and he is a good one! He is a beautiful red neck roan and has a BW of 80 lbs. He is long bodied, soggy made and structurally sound. There are a lot of herds that he could work in!

A full sister to Frontier is in the Shadybrook herd in Quebec. We considered another full brother to be our best bull a few years ago, until he died just before we did our sale catalog.. Frontier is going to develop into an impressive sire and with his pedigree, you will be wanting to keep all his daughters. BW- 98 lbs.

This is the only Pioneer bull we have this year, and he comes from one of the most well known females in the breed, Waukaru 12H Melita Rose 5021. She is best known as being the dam of Waukaru Patent 8161, who has been used in some of the world’s leading herds. This makes Fearless a maternal brother to Patent, so if he can be half as successful as his brother, you will be getting a real bargain. Fearless is only an April bull but we decided to offer him because of the potential he has to become a leading herd sire. BW 82 lb.

We are always looking to add new outcross genetics that we know will work for us and the livestock industry so when Diamond shorthorns informed us of Royalla Rockstar semen going to be available we told them we needed some as soon as it got to Canada. We picked 2 of our top cows to breed him to and are super impressed. This little bugger hit the ground at 71lbs and took right off. The Dam ACC Baroness fed both calves and this guy weaned off at 830lbs on August 20th. The mating of Royalla Rockstar to some of our top cow families has exceeded our expectations. When you see this Cruiser daughter, we think you will see why we are so high on him. Massive in her design, moderate in her frame, and still has that broody look. She is backed by the First Kiss cow family that has produced so many good cattle at Waukaru. Study your lessons on this heifer! She walks and talks! BW 82 lbs.

Another Cruiser heifer and a Marion Delight. This cow line has produced lots of top calves in our herd. She has the Cruiser look, just like the others BW 88 lbs.

This heifer is an April maternal sister to HC Cruiser 59C who was our top selling bull in 2016 at $16,500. There are several Cruiser progeny in this sale. This heifer has been a chunk since birth and if she is even half as good at producing as her dam, she will be a good one. We are planning to flush her dam, so decided to offer her. Free Spirit daughters are making great brood cows. BW 82 lb.

John Elliot in Scotland says some of his best calves from the dam of this heifer. A maternal brother sold for $15,000 a few years ago as well. This heifer gets the award for the most improvement since weaning and I think the best is yet to come. BW- 90 lb.

Magnum has put a solid foot into his calves with exceptional muscle and growth. He was the 2012 CWA Grand Champion Bull.

Cruiser has been a most unique bull since birth and he was our high selling bull in 2017 at $16,500. We feel fortunate to have been able to buy an interest in him back after we have seen how he has continued to develop and seeing his calves. He is definitely one of the stoutest bulls we have ever used.

Zeus was the 2014 Canadian National Champion Shorthorn bull. His offspring come with lots of growth and thickness and have a good strong foot.

When we saw the first Free Spirit calves he immediately became our senior herd sire. His calves are thick and moderate framed and have been born easily. We have sold the European semen rights to a group of Irish breeders and Australian semen rights have sold to Sprys Shorthorns. Free Spirit is siring excellent calves of both sexes, and we feel they are one of the best sire groups we have ever produced.

The “new” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation is now finally completed and you will notice a difference between today’s EPDs and those in past years. These EPDs were completed by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi- breed genetic evaluation. These EPDS now have the same “base” as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds. As a result, our EPDs can now be compared with these breeds. This means that bull and female buyers can search for genetics from multiple breeds and compare the performance profiles against one another.

Birth Weight (BW)

At the basic level, birth weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease, but the emphasis on birth weight can be overdone. Economically, over selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. Use BW EPD in conjunction with calving ease. Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weights and calving ease.

Weaning Weights (WW)

Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. Finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success.

Yearling Weight (YW)

This trait is economically important since it is more indicative of growth potential through market weights taken early in the animals life. Single trait selection for YW can lead to serious problems that can affect bottom line profit. Mature must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. YW EPDs can be very influential if you understand your environment conditions or if you are retaining ownership in your calves from birth to slaughter.

A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

Terms of Sale Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Bidding Disputes: The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash, unless previous arrangements have been made with the owner. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale facility. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time. If leaving your bull in our care we strongly encourage you as the new owner to insure him. Insurance: A representative of a major insurance company will be present to care for insuring cattle. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal. Announcements: Changes of information contained in this catalogue relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Health: All cattle will be in excellent health. Breeder’s Guarantee: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Retained Interest: In the event that an owner wishes to reserve the right to collect semen from any bull in the sale, it will be announced prior to the sale and from the auction block as well. Semen will be collected at the buyer`s convenience and at the seller`s expense, and it will only be available for use in the seller`s herd. Liability: Neither owners, sale manager, clerks, nor anyone connected with the sale assumes any responsibility, legal or otherwise for damage of any kind. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.

Bull Warranty We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull, capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for any physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore, we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.

How Much Can you Afford to Pay for a Better Bull? Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X Number of cows bred to him each year X Number of years to keep the bull X Expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull that will add an additional 30 lbs to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and if you sell the calves at $2.50/ lb 30X 25 = 750 lbs x 4 years=3000 additional lbs X $2.50/ lb = $7500.00 This bull is worth $7500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put in your own figures. Source: Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association
