Change You Have To Be Willing To
First
If you want your horse to change, you have to be willing
to change first. That is the most important concept you can understand when it comes to training horses. When I was an apprentice for Ian Francis, he often said to me, “To change your life, you must first change your attitude.” Ian believes, as do I, that if you’re unhappy with the current state of your life, you need to change your attitude and perceive your life the way you’d like for it to be and in turn follow through with the action to make it happen.
A lot of people are unhappy with their horse’s performance, but they’re unwilling to change themselves.
I’ve incorporated that saying into training horses – “If you want to change your horse, you must first change the way you interact

put in the effort. But you have to be willing to work at it and have a burning desire to be the best horseman you can be. The Foundation of A Respectful Relationship I’ve dedicated my life to learning about horses and helping people understand how their horses think and act so that they can work safely with them and enjoy the experience. I’m not a naturally gifted horseman, but I have worked hard at becoming the best horseman I can be. When I started Downunder Horsemanship, I knew there were people just like me who were frustrated and not enjoying their horses because they didn’t understand how to effectively communicate with them. The key is understanding your horse and knowing why he reacts the way he does. Every horse is different and will teach you while you’re teaching him. When a horse and rider understand each other, they develop a strong bond of mutual trust and respect. There is almost no limit to what a horse and rider can accomplish when they work together. Author note: Clinton Anderson is a clinician, horse trainer and competitor. He’s dedicated his life to helping others realize their horsemanship dreams and keeping them inspired to achieve their goals. The Downunder Horsemanship Method gives horse owners the knowledge needed to become skilled horsemen and train their horses to be consistent and willing partners. Discover for yourself how Clinton and the Method can help you achieve your horsemanship dreams at www.downunderhorsemanship.com.

What to Consider Before Organizing an
Equine Event
Your club or association wants to organize a horse show. Or, your club wants to hold a clinic and invite a nationally known trainer to offer tips on training, showing, or horsemanship skills to members and guests, many who bring horses to the event. These events, your group believes, will boost publicity, increase membership, and generate extra money. Things can go wrong, however. Is your club prepared for these: While showing in an equitation class, a competitor gets kicked in the knee by another competitor’s horse. The injured competitor blames the problem on jumps left in the ring that allegedly restrict space along the rail. A horse spooks while its trainer is saddling it, breaks away from its handler, and runs loose through the show grounds causing other horses to spook before it runs over a spectator. During the line-up, as the competitors await their placings, a horse spooks (possibly from a colorful electronic scoring board near the arena), throws its rider, jumps out of the arena, and seriously injures people on the show grounds. These incidents actually occurred, and lawsuits followed. We defended each of the lawsuits. RISK MANAGEMENT OPTIONS Equine event managers, in their efforts to avoid liability, have numerous options to consider. The measures they pursue will depend on the type of event, type of animals involved, location, applicable laws, and the individual preferences of management. Here are a few ideas. EVENT LIABILITY INSURANCE Liability insurance is important for equine events. Should an incident occur that gives rise to a claim, and if the claim is covered, the liability insurer will assign defense counsel, pay the legal fees, and pay any settlements or judgments as the policy permits. Few equine associations are financially capable of paying these expenses on their own, without coverage. Keep in mind that event insurance policies can be complicated. Policies sometimes exclude coverage for claims brought by participants who are injured while practicing for or participating in the event. In a 1979 case, for example, a cutting horse competitor died after his horse slipped and fell on him during competition. His estate blamed the fall on improper arena footing and sued. Wisconsin’s Supreme Court held that coverage was excluded for that case because the competitor was a “participant,” and the event policy excluded coverage for claims involving injured participants. Carefully discuss your coverage options with a knowledgeable insurance agent. PARTICIPANT WAIVERS/RELEASES Show management can consider requiring all participants of legal age (or, where allowed by law, the minor participants’ parents or
legally appointed guardians) to sign liability releases. In the eyes of the law, horse trainers very rarely qualify as “guardians” for their clients’ minor children. Courts in most states have shown a willingness to enforce releases – if they are properly written and signed. As this blog has explained in the past, some states prevent parents from releasing claims of their minor children through pre-incident waivers or releases. “WARNING” SIGNS Equine activity liability acts (now in all states except New York, California, and Maryland) sometimes provide that “equine activity sponsors” should post “warning” or other signs. SHOWGROUND RENTAL AGREEMENT ISSUES Clubs should be extra careful before signing contracts to rent showgrounds. For example, the property owner renting the showgrounds for the event might require the club to sign leases. While these documents can be tremendously important, they sometimes include provisions that cause trouble down the line. For example, property leases sometimes include indemnification and “hold harmless” clauses through which the club must release and protect the property owner – even if the property owner was at fault for causing an injury (such as defective stalls or a sound system that generates loud pings that scare horses). Also, rental contracts sometimes require the club to name the property owner as an “additional insured” on the club’s event liability policy. Read all contracts carefully and seek counsel when needed. CONCLUSION Equine events can generate serous liabilities. Associations and clubs would be wise to plan ahead to avoid or respond to them. Traveling thru Kentucky this summer? Stop by the Kentucky Horse Park just north of Lexington off I-75. The Breed Barn show runs March 16 to November 6 each day at 1:30 P.M. With music, narration and interaction, humankind’s six thousand year partnership with the horse is brought to life. From the rare Marwari to the iconic American Quarter Horse, breed representatives perform in hand and under saddle. During the summer season, breed representatives perform in colorful attire that evokes the culture, time period, and customs of their native land. During the spring and fall seasons, the demonstration is likely to be more casual in nature. Every Breeds Barn show includes an opportunity for guests to take photos, pet our equine performers, and chat with our riders. Visit the Breeds Barn throughout the day (especially in the morning) to see horses being bathed, groomed, and trained for the afternoon show.

Richard Winters
Help Wanted! With Richard Winters “Help Wanted!’ No, I don’t need a stall cleaner or assistant trainer. However, it is true that I need help. I’m on a horsemanship journey and I’ve decided that I cannot get there on my own. I’m constantly looking for individuals and situations that can help me improve my horsemanship skills. In this article I want to share a few anecdotal stories that exemplify this idea.
very talented. I know he could be even better. I’m afraid his attitude is holding him back.” That’s too bad. I don’t want to be that guy. I was recently at a big cow horse show and I saw three gentlemen on horseback having a conversation. Two of them were Hall of Fame riders. The third was a younger up-and-coming star in the Western performance horse world. As I attempted to eavesdrop, I was struck by the fact that the young man was not getting advice from them. They were listening to him! These two patriarchs recognized this young man was doing some pretty cool things with his horses and they wanted to learn more about it. These men were not too proud to continue learning and I was impressed by what I was observing.
A few months ago I had the opportunity to ride with my daughter Sarah who Richard Winters and Sarah Dawson – One of my favorite teachers is a very successful reined cow horse trainer. While I was working a cow, she gave me a tip on how I could cue I recently had a conversation with the father of a horse trainer that I know. I had mentioned I was get- my horse more with my legs instead of my hands. ting ready to go and spend some time with one of my That little tip made a big difference. That one observation and simple tip from a qualified horsewoman mentors in hopes of getting help with my horsemanship. “I wish my son would do more of the same.” is still helping me with my horses today. Later I He went on to say, “He never seems willing to go to mentioned to her, “Sarah, that one suggestion was a clinic or take a lesson to seek out any help. I don’t worth the whole trip for me. Photo By Ross Hecox me.” Sarah gets that kind of help everyday at her training barn. Whether it’s her husband or another qualified horseman, there is a continual flow and sharing of ideas. No wonder she’s better than me! Doug Williamson, a million-dollar rider and Hall of Fame member of the National Reined Cow Horse Association is a good friend and mentor of mine. As a young man, Doug used to rodeo and rope calves at amateur rodeos around the country. Some friends of his who were going to professional rodeos encouraged him to get his card and join them on the road. “Only on my best day am I good
enough to compete against you guys. Why would I want to do that?” Doug asked. After much persuading he did get his professional card and started traveling with those cowboys. He later looked back and realized the importance of that decision. He began hanging with Ropers that were continually challenging him to be better. And he got better! What’s the moral of the story for me? I’ve got to find opportunities to ride with people that are better than me. A couple years ago our daughter Sarah married Mr. Chris Dawson. Chris has shown horses all his life and he’s currently ranked the number 2 rider in the world, according to the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Together,
Chris and Sarah have a thriving training business in Aubrey, Texas. Chris is originally from Nebraska and I recently asked him if he would ever consider moving back, due to land prices being cheaper, to set up their training business. “I couldn’t do it.” He said, “I’m afraid I would get off track and lose my edge. I need to be in the heart of horse country and surround myself with other horsemen who will challenge me to be better.” If he needs that consistent help, what about you and me?
horse is our best teacher. Yet, I’m going to continually look to others who are on this horsemanship journey. And yes, it will be people who are farther along to help me in this process. Who’s helping you?
Maybe the title of this article needs to be changed. Instead of “Help Wanted” it should read “Help Needed”. Yes, we can learn things on our own. And it is true that often times the

Improving Wa the
By Lynn Palm It probably comes as no surprise that a good walk is important in a trail horse. However, a horse with a comfortable, groundcovering walk is one that will be appreciated by real working cowboys, dressage riders, endurance and competitive trail riders, as well as weekend trail riders. That is because the walk is one of the hardest gaits to improve in a horse, and yet it is the gait most commonly used by most riders outside of speed events.
Although it is difficult to improve the quality of a horse’s walk, there are some exercises you can practice to teach your horse to walk at a comfortable, controlled speed in a straight line. When your horse is in a controlled walk, it is much easier for him to stay balanced when he is going up and down hills. If a horse is balanced and moving in a straight line, he can better transfer his weight to his hind end when going downhill as well as negotiate rough terrain much more easily. Practice the following exercise in your regular tack in an enclosed area at first before
you take it out on the trail. Make sure you are sitting balanced in the center of your horse’s back and that your cues are clear so that your horse understands them. The Basic Walk Many riders create problems unintentionally when they either kick or grip the horse’s side to get him to walk forward, but these two actions actually make the horse resist. Try pounding your ribs with your fist to get an idea of what your horse feels if you do this. Remember that a horse is sensitive enough to feel a fly land on his skin so he does not need much of a leg aid when you ask him to move forward. Use your calves, and not your heels, in as light a touch as necessary to ask your horse to walk forward. If your horse does not step forward immediately into a walk, slide your calves slightly backward and ask again. If that doesn’t work, use a “clucking” sound with your leg aid or touch his side with your crop or the end of our reins just behind your leg or on his rump to give him even more encouragement to move away from the touch.
As your horse walks, practice staying balanced and let your hips move back and forth naturally as they follow his motion at the walk. This will synchronize you with the horse, and both you and he will be more comfortable. It also will encourage him to relax

his back and use his hind legs more. You keep the horse moving straight and maintaining speed by using light support with your legs and reins. You can tell if your horse is comfortable and relaxed in the walk if his ears are forward and he is moving along without resistance. If your horse is relaxed, clearly understands what you are asking of him, and trusts you, then he will be easier to work with and enjoy the ride too. If you are unbalanced or heavy-handed, however, your horse will be frustrated and anxious for the ride to be over with and may challenge you in

some way.
to the inside.
There is less momentum at the walk to help your horse stay straight. If he is having trouble staying straight at the walk, practice transitions between the walk and the trot. Walk straight and at a steady pace—without slowing or speeding up. Next, practice varying your speed at the walk.
Always be aware of your position in the saddle. Your spine should be centered over your horse and an observer should be able to draw a straight line from your ear to your shoulder to the middle of your hip, to the back of your heel, and down to the ground. Your eyes should always be looking ahead to where you want to go and not down at your horse.
After practicing walking in a straight line, walk in circles at a steady pace. Remember, that when you circle your horse, he should have a slight bend or curve to his body and not have just his head turned
Remember, if you have trouble controlling your horse’s speed at any gait, bring him into a turn because bending will automatically slow him down. At a
walk, initiate the turn by using an upward motion with your outside rein only. This will shorten the horse’s stride at the walk. Think of your outside rein as your “brake.” The material is taken from a series of articles I did for Trail Rider Magazine with writer Cynthia McFarland. Many trailtraining lessons can be found in my book, Training Outside the Box. Find this, and other helpful training materials, at www. lynnpalm.com or call 800-503-2824.
