Horsham Town Hall Welcome to our 8th edition of the Horsham Town Hall and Horsham Regional Art Gallery Calendar. With this brochure we see the homeward stretch to Christmas, with a full schedule of concerts, exhibitions and events in the upcoming months, and the venue staff are fully focused on providing that memorable experience for you and on your next visit. In October we welcome the return of Celtic Illusion and The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to our theatre. The MSO will transform our stage with their entrancing music composed by Elena Kats-Chernin and guest conductor British clarinet virtuoso Michael Collins. It will be the Wimmera’s chance to submerge themselves in the full orchestra experience. For the theatre lovers we are excited to present Exposing Edith. Winner of Best Cabaret Performance at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2016, Michaela Burger will enthrall you with her haunting voice and beautiful tale of this Parisian icon. In the gallery we celebrate our next generation of artists who have come together to be mentored in art practice and exhibition making. The resulting exhibition Exposed: perceptions in photography showcases their talents, and has been made possible through funding from the Department of Education and Training Victoria, Strategic Partnerships Program. It is with amazing pride that the venue is able to host the Russian Ballet with Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Casey Chambers ‘Dragon Fly’ Tour. This is the opportunity to experience world-class entertainment right on our doorstop. Finally, I would like to invite businesses and their staff to our ‘Bogan Bingo’ in December. This event gives you an opportunity to book something new and uniquely different from previous staff Christmas parties. With a meal included and amazing bogan entertainment it will be a night not to forget. So please come join us, on the journey to Christmas.

Constructed Narratives Tracey Moffatt + Bindi Cole Chocka

19 AUGUST – 8 OCTOBER 2017

19 AUGUST – 8 OCTOBER 2017 The artists in Constructed Narratives explore culturally diverse stories of self-determination and identity; they question the perspective of mainstream Australia. They can provoke the audience to feel uncomfortable and question their relationship to the ideas placed before them. Culture politics is a high stakes game with power at its core. In recognition of this fact many First Nation photographers have successfully utilised humour to great effect as a disarming tactic. Tracey Moffatt is arguably the most significant Australian photo-media artist working internationally today. As a director of photo-narratives, her formal and stylistic experimentation in film, photography and video reference the history of art and photography, as well as her own childhood memories and fantasies. Bindi Cole Chocka’s compelling photographs, videos and installations fearlessly approach taboo topics with dignity, humour and compassion, often referencing her life story and experiences in contemporary Australia. Horsham Regional Art Gallery has been slowly amassing a discrete collection of contemporary indigenous photography. This exhibition has been made possible through the support of our peers collecting Australian photographic practice at MAMA. 4

Remix draws on both the collections of the Hamilton Gallery and the Horsham Regional Art Gallery. The Hamilton Gallery Collection is renowned for its outstanding holdings of Australian and International decorative arts, sculpture and painting. Mixed with key artworks from our own Collection; painting collides with decorative arts, sculpture with photography; a new series of connections and relationships are formed. Through this selection of artworks by Australian and International artists, we explore the nexus between the perception and the representation of reality. Their artwork challenges materiality and form to present the duality of the object. Embedded with historical, cultural and spiritual agency these magic objects act as a tool with which to view the world and critique it. Remix is curated by Alison Eggleton, Curator Horsham Regional Art Gallery in partnership with the Sarah Schmidt, Director of Hamilton Gallery, Southern Grampians Shire Council.

Impressions: Printmaking in the Wimmera

Seeing Voices

19 AUGUST – 8 OCTOBER 2017

14 OCTOBER – 10 DECEMBER 2017

“One drawing is sown on the stone or etching plate, and a harvest is reaped from it.” Vincent van Gogh The act of printmaking in of itself is to make an impression on a surface, traditionally by means of incising an image on to a matrix such as a block, plate, stone or screen – inking the image and running it through a press onto paper. The 19thC Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh considered the reproducibility of printmaking miraculous because it allowed thinkers and artists to disseminate their work. From these humble traditions, printmaking has evolved to encompass Eastern and Western techniques, digital technologies, experimentation in method and materiality, and the single print artwork. Showcasing the diversity in printmaking practice by artists of our region, this exhibition illustrates the contemporary use of drypoint, monotype, etching, oil pastel print, linocut, relief linocut, mono print and block print techniques.

Seeing Voices uses the Monash University Collection as a springboard for thinking through the voice and how it is visualized, employed and reimagined in contemporary art. In the exhibition, the voice might act as a metaphor for collective action, for speaking out against injustice and coming together in gestures of solidarity. It can be a marker of cultural and geographic specificity or the trace of disappearing language. It may also function like a spiritual medium; through its historical recording and archiving it time-travels to haunt the present. The voice is also an index, a measure of positon, perspective, distance and emotion. In private, in public, in conversation, on record – the voice connects our experiences with those of others. In addition to artworks selected from the Monash University Collection, Seeing Voices features loans from Australian and international artists. The exhibition encompasses drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and video. To bring the immediacy of the live voice into the gallery, the exhibition will include a performance by Wrong Solo duo Agatha Gothe-Snape and Brian Fuata.

Exposed: perceptions in photography 14 OCTOBER – 10 DECEMBER 2017

Enmeshed: woven artworks from the Ararat Regional Art Gallery collection 16 DECEMBER 2017 – 11 FEBRUARY 2018

As part of the Horsham Regional Art Gallery’s education program, this exhibition is the outcome of our extension activities for students with an interest or talent in the Arts and is funded by the Department of Education and Training’s Strategic Partnerships Program. During term three the gallery partnered with a professional writer, photographer and graphic designer to enrich the visual arts experience for gifted and talented students in regional and remote schools in our region in the medium of art, design and writing. This mentor experience with professionals working in the arts, gives our students an opportunity to be involved in an industry more readily available to their urban contemporaries. The program also provides students with the opportunity to have their artwork exhibited in a public forum, extends the content of their folios in VCE subject areas and prepares them for more intense study at a VCE or tertiary level. Students in Years 10 - 12 from Horsham College, St Brigid’s College, Dimboola Memorial Secondary College, Nhill College, Marian College Ararat, and Stawell Secondary College participated in a 6 – 9 week afterschool program in the areas of English, Visual Communication and Design, and Art/Photography. 8

Ararat Regional Art Gallery is Australia’s most dedicated presenter of contemporary textile art. Since the early 1970s, the gallery has collected continually and today it holds the most comprehensive collection of textile and fibre art in Australia.

Horsham Regional Art Gallery program. Funded by the Department of Education and Training Victoria, Strategic Partnerships Program.

Enmeshed: woven artworks from the Ararat Regional Art Gallery collection spans the heady days of the 1970s through to now and features works by formative influences such as John Corbett, Ewa Pachuka and Jutta Fedderson alongside more contemporary artists including Kate Just, Sebastian Di Mauro and Lucy Irvine who take the idea of weaving in fresh, new directions. Enmeshed explores the ways artists use textile and fibre materials and techniques to push the boundaries of contemporary practice, from large textile works which soften public spaces, work which reference gender and cultural identity through the relationship of textiles to the body, through to innovative works that combine unconventional materials with reference to weaving traditions. Enmeshed is a Horsham Regional Art Gallery exhibition presented in partnership with Ararat Regional Art Gallery. 9

Exposing Edith

You can’t judge a spook by its cover 2017

Exposing Edith is a stunning mix of authentic French chanson and contemporary sounds. Having explored the undertones of Piaf’s vocals and lyrics, Michaela Burger [vocals] and Greg Wain [guitar] have created their own unique interpretations of Piaf’s work, using voice and acoustic guitar and the subtle use of loop, delay and effect pedals.

In the fair township of Creepy Hollow, the Vamp, Mummy, Boogie and Werewolf families have never gotten along. An ancient grudge between the families dictates they should never associate with one another. Fate take a turn when the townsfolk, in order to win a competition, are asked to demonstrate their community spirit. Their excitement soon turns to fear when they realise the feuding families may spoil any chance they have of taking out the grand prize. Can they devise a daring plan to win the competition and end the family feuds once and for all, by proving you Can’t judge a Spook by its Cover!

Winner of Best Cabaret Performance at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2016. “Michaela Burger is a blazing life force in her evocation of Edith Piaf.” - THE AGE 12

Heartache and redemption are good like that. Fresh off the back of sold out shows and rave reviews across the USA, Kasey Chambers announces her long awaited return to Horsham on her “Dragonfly Tour”. Born in Horsham in 1910, Conrad Otto Kroker had a lifelong love of photography. Living almost all of his life on the land, the wildlife and the landscape of the Western District became his natural subjects.
