Mayors Message Acknowledgement of country The Horsham Town Hall acknowledges the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk people – traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work.
Welcome to 2019 and the 80th year of our Horsham Town Hall! In the three short years since the major redevelopment, and re-opening, in 2016, Horsham Town Hall has achieved some amazing results. In 2018, the venue attracted over 73,462 patrons. 263 performances were presented, 126 events were held and the Art Gallery hosted 17 exhibitions, multiple public programs and 112 workshops. We welcomed 226 new members and circulated over 22,000 brochures. The Town Hall Team work hard to provide a professional performing and visual arts venue, fit to be labelled the jewel of our regional city. They are supported by our incredible volunteers who have contributed over 2,900 hours of generous support. Since 1939, the Town Hall has been the venue for events, both large and small, for the people of Horsham, the Wimmera Region and beyond. The Town Hall has hosted performances of all genres of music, debutant balls, weddings, funerals, fundraising events and cabarets. Up until the early 1980’s, this was the City Of Horsham’s Civic Centre, with Council Offices and the Council Chamber upstairs. Since then it has been the home of our Horsham Regional Art Gallery. Over the coming months, the Horsham Town Hall team will present a series of events celebrating this incredible 80th year milestone by showcasing a fascinating selection of performances, exhibitions and events for you to enjoy. I look forward to seeing you….in the foyer Cr. Mark Radford Mayor Horsham Rural City

CATHERINE BELL · MINNA GILLIGAN · LARESA KOSLOFF · JESSE MARLOW ALASDAIR MCLUCKIE · MICHAEL GF PRIOR · CATHY STAUGHTON
On a Tangent explores the artistic practice of seven contemporary artists and the tangential forces on their work. Some artworks have developed unintentionally through other projects, anecdotal evidence of different intentions or a change of course.
Some works are a creative exchange between artists. Others have developed through fleeting, personal encounters or see the possibility of the unremarkable reinvented. Exploring geometric and philosophical meanings in tangent, visitors are encouraged to go off on their own tangents, to be lead down the garden path. Common to human experience are the particular moments of realisation which apparently form from nowhere, sudden understanding of a previously cryptic concept or the rush of inspiration when it strikes. Not without hard work or diligence, there is inherent wisdom in the understanding that like a bolt from the blue often something comes from nothing and sometimes creative work benefits most from going off on a tangent.

Interference Pattern: Rebecca Najdowski and Vivian Cooper Smith Interference Pattern challenges the conventions of landscape photography by bringing together the work of Rebecca Najdowski and Vivian Cooper Smith to form new temporal images – landscapes in flux. Their artwork is formed through studio and darkroom interventions with landscape imagery derived from the Wimmera region. Working from photographic film, Rebecca manipulates their structure — cutting, scratching, burning, tearing, stapling, folding— to give a sense of additive-erasure and draw attention to how photographs frame nature.
Vivian primarily uses re-photography, adding further disruption to this process through visual obstructions to the lens such as crystals and mirrors as well as introducing movement of the prints during long exposure. The results are landscape images largely untethered from any identifiable location but resonant with the site and performance of making, embracing the idea that photographic materials, camera, photographer and subject-matter are active and equal participants in the process. The photography of Australia’s First Nations people has become a significant component of our Collection of Australian Photography. This year we welcome work by James Tylor, Kent Morris and Destiny Deacon. Deacon uses our obsession with football and humour to investigate our representation of Indigenous people, while Morris and Tylor each in their own way illustrate that culture is ongoing, and connected to the natural world be it urban or the bush. We continue to celebrate Mack Jost’s extraordinary gift to our community with a work by Alice Wormald, whose oil painting continues our investigation of landscape painting and enters the Collection through the Mack Jost Bequest. WORKSHOP REBECCA NAJDOWSKI AND VIVIAN COOPER SMITH
In this hands-on workshop Rebecca Najdowski and Vivian Cooper Smith will give insights into their respective art practices and what drives their interest in landscape photography. They will demonstrate the different ways in which they intervene in the photographic process including direct manipulation of the negative or print, through to techniques of long exposure and re-photography. To get the most out of the experience they encourage you to bring a camera, tripod and a selection of prints and/or negatives to experiment with. Minna Gilligan works primarily with painting, drawing and collage. Her practice speaks of fleeting, personal encounters with the past and present, and manifests in a tumultuous reconciliation of both. Her works are playgrounds of colour, reference 1960s/ ‘70s psychedelia, and evoke a nostalgic romanticism - existing in a utopian space of imagery filtered through the digital realm.

In Her Words CURATED BY OLIVIA POLONI In Her Words is a photographic exhibition focusing on women behind and in front of the camera. Women who are in control of their own story; whether they are speaking their own truth or reenacting the accounts of others. In this exhibition we hear from women who are bold in the telling of their flaws, uncertainties and strengths; aiming to get to the core of the female experience, rights and challenges.
Image credit: Cherine FAHD Hidden Mother 1, 50 x 50 cm, Archival pigment print 2010/2018, courtesy of the artist. This project has been assisted by NETS Victoria’s Exhibitions Development Fund, supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
HRAG
Bringing together historical works from the Horsham Art Gallery collection with key figures in contemporary Australian photographic practice, the exhibition explores migration, queer culture, aboriginality, youth and childhood, the body, domesticity, place, identity and female repressions and expression. Through these images the photographers make bold statements about the societies in which they live and work.

PERFORMANCE
ONE FELL SWOOP CIRCUS
By a Thread Seven acrobats and 30 metres of rope…
HTH THEATRE
Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Like the booms and sheets of a sailing ship the performers are hoisted and swung by one another to create striking tableaux and breath-taking dynamics. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect.
By a Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from some of Australia’s best emerging circus artists. With intense training in a breadth of contemporary circus disciplines, the performers have pooled their knowledge and skills, and then exploded the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways. This violent tale of the breakdown of civilized behaviour in a setting of isolation and fear highlights the contrast between cooperation and competition. The story is set against the background of some type of nuclear war and a plane crash that forces a group of British boys to cope with the human need for society
and the animal need for survival. While protecting themselves from the outward threat of the beast, they discover that the real threat is their own primitive impulses. Kick Up The Artz is a local acting and creative movement training studio preparing young people for future adventures in the arts.
