APRIL – JUNE 2018

The Horsham Town Hall acknowledges the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk people and their continued relationship to work together as custodians of culture, country, heritage, lore and language, and pay our respect for these lands and waters of traditional owners past and present.

Welcome to our latest edition of the Horsham Town Hall and Regional Art Gallery quarterly calendar. As the cooler months approach, we are pleased to present a unique and diverse range of entertainment for you to enjoy in our hall, theatre and galleries. The Horsham Regional Art Gallery is thrilled to present the work of internationally renowned artists to the Wimmera. I encourage you to take advantage of our amazing gallery and the world class installations that it has to showcase to the region, in both touring and permanent exhibits. March, April and May, step into the world of German artist Andrea Grützner’s exhibition of large scale photographs in “Erbgericht”. May and June, New Zealand’s most significant artist working today Michael Parekowhai will present his 3.5m high inflatable bunny “Cosmo” alongside New York’s pioneer video artist Tony Oursler and his 1994 work “Vision Tracey Doll”, which fuses video with sculpture. The venue partners with many international, regional and community organisations to present a diverse calendar of performances. The dulcet tones of The Celtic Tenors will enthral lovers of Gaelic music, and devotees of world renowned André Rieu will need no introduction to his Australian prodigy Mirusia, appearing for one night only.

In April and May, laughter abounds with internationally acclaimed comic duo The Umbilical Brothers and the car load of comedians coming from this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. New and classic Australian dramas Personal, Hotel Sorrento and The Quiet Faith take centre stage exploring family dynamics, personal beliefs and acceptance. Our community is rich in local talent, with no better examples than Horsham Arts Council’s newest production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and the annual Art is… Festival. Combined, their goal to deliver exceptional performances and foster emerging talent ensures our region remains strong and connected. Our venue will support the annual Art is… Festival through various exhibitions, performances and visual art installations such as the “Festoon” project and Inaugural Annual Dance Affair. I encourage you to make your mark, enjoy, participate and have fun at the Horsham Town Hall and Regional Art Gallery. Cr Pam Clarke Mayor

Andrea Grützner: Erbgericht Step into the photography of Berlin based artist Andrea Grützner, the 2017 ING Unseen Talent Prize winner. Through the projection of light and the use of film the guesthouse called Erbgericht, the cultural heart of a village in rural Saxony Germany, becomes a series of stage sets or backdrops for memories. Andrea’s photography transforms the interior walls, corners and passageways of this historic building into a series of striking and complex compositions. The house is - as the cultural center of the village - a projection screen for generations of memories and emotions. As a guest with both familiarity with the area, and yet a feeling of alienation from it, I enter into a visual dialogue with this special building which has cast a spell over me for years. Andrea Grützner Visit Andrea Grützner: Erbgericht and explore the history of abstract art and colour theory through a selection of photographs, prints and paintings from the Horsham Regional Art Gallery Collection, on the walls of Das Studio. Hoda Afshar: Behold The public bathhouse is the site for Iranian born; Melbourne based Hoda Afshar’s poignant series of photographs that delve into the hidden lives of men. Alluding to the public realm, Afshar’s images reflect issues of representation, displacement, gender, and identity politics. Her photographs open up discussion in a world both homogenized by the global economy and unsettled by mass migration. ‘I was travelling in a city that I sometimes return to, and I got to know a group of gay men. There, where they live, these men (and many others like them) are mostly left to be. But only on the condition that they lead one part of their lives in secret... Only here, in this bathhouse, where their desire to be seen and embraced by others is played out the partial openness of these four closed walls.’ Hoda Afshar studied Fine Art–Photography, Azad University, Tehran. Since moving to Australia Hoda has become a PhD candidate at Curtin University, and also lecturers at the Photography Studies College, Melbourne. In 2015 Hoda won the Australian National Photographic Portrait Prize. A Horsham Regional Art Gallery partnership exhibition with the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne. Dave Jones: Story Maker

EXHIBITION

Enter the world of the story maker; puppeteer, technology manipulator, filmmaker, and Natimuk based community artist Dave Jones. A 2013–14 Australia Council Fellow and internationally acclaimed short filmmaker and artist Dave Jones, loves to tell a story. In recent years, Jones’ practice has grown to explore interactive video work and has evolved into real-time experiential installation, where participants can make decisions that influence the outcome and shape the story. We showcase four key projects that trace the experimentation he has untaken since 2015. Through photographic and video documentation we present two major projects Balance 2015 and Swelter 2017, which focus on environmental sustainability. We explore his collaborative practice through Chamber Made Theatre’s commission for Captives of the City 2015. Finally we bring elements of Jones’ interactive technology into the gallery space with Jones’ latest installation FaceOff. Sitting at the cutting edge of digital media, Jones encourages participation from the unsuspecting child in us all. We enter into a world where the rule book has been set aside. Combining his ongoing focus on interactivity with his passion for the natural environment, Jones’ innovative projects remind us that the individual can be an agent for change.

MASTERCLASS

Hoda Afshar Hoda Afshar was born in Tehran, Iran, and is now based in Melbourne, Australia. Through her art practice which moves seamlessly between the documentary, the artistic, and the constructed imbued with a good dose of humour, Hoda reflects on issues related to the politics of representation, gender and displacement. Her work aims to open lines of communication in a world both homogenized by global economy and unsettled by mass migration. In 2015 Hoda won Australia’s National Photographic Portrait Prize with her work Portrait of Ali, which documents a young boy in a mountainous village of northern Iran. Hoda is also a member of ‘Eleven’, a new collective of contemporary Muslim Australian artists, curators and writers whose aim is to disrupt the current politics of representation and hegemonic discourses.

MASTERCLASS

Masterclass: New Documentary Photography

In this workshop, Hoda Afshar will draw on her experience as both a documentary and art photographer, as well as a researcher and teacher to explore questions about the nature and possibilities of documentary image-making today. Reflecting on her own concerns with the communicative and world-making power of art and photographs, Hoda will guide participants through her process of constructing narrative-based work that is both conceptually focused and personal, and which intersects the usual lines between ‘staged’ and documentary photography. Meet the Artist: Hoda Afshar

Join us as we hear from Behold artist Hoda Asfhar as she discusses the development of her photographic series that delves into the hidden lives of men. Her life as an Iranian/Australian photographer and how living between these two worlds influences her understanding of both and her photographic practice. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat In this retelling of the Biblical story, Joseph is a handsome young man who is his father’s favourite child, able to interpret dreams, and the bearer of an amazing coloured coat. Joseph’s eleven brothers become insatiably jealous resulting in them selling Joseph into slavery to some passing Ishmaelites. After refusing the advances of his owner’s wife, Joseph is sent to jail. Once in jail, he quickly becomes popular due to his ability to interpret dreams. The Pharaoh soon hears of Joseph’s ability and appoints him to the post of Number Two man in Egypt.

Years later, Joseph’s now starving brothers arrive in Egypt and ask Joseph, whom they do not recognize, for assistance. Joseph, in turn, gives his brothers a scare, but eventually grants them all they desire, reveals his identity, and reunites the family. This popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is set to entertain and delight in a kaleidoscope of colours, music and talent with a children’s ensemble to suit. ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ will appeal to all ages and will be a great family night out.

EXHIBITION

A Horsham Regional Art Gallery Exhibition

The Mann Collection of Wildlife Art Steve Morvell, Brett Jarrett, Michael Munday, Nicholas Pike, Robert Mancini, Janet Flinn, Robert Ulmann, Annette Taylor, Pete Marshall As collectors of wildlife art for over twenty years, the late Bill and Maureen Mann built up an exquisite collection that revealed their deep appreciation for Australia’s and Africa’s unique fauna. They developed relationships with key Australian wildlife artists that would grow to admiration, for their ability could convey the character of any bird or animal.

From this collection, we celebrate the abundance of bird life and animals unique to our region and across this broad continent. The fragility of the environment, as an underlying concern of wildlife artists, is revealed in the artwork of Michael Munday, Robert Mancini, Janet Flinn, Robert Ulmann, and Annette Taylor. This exhibition presents the complexity of visual styles and illustrates the remarkable use of mediums and methods by these artists to convey their experience of wildlife and the environment. EXHIBITION

Soft Core Soft Core presents artistic practices that explore the many facets of ‘softness’ - from large-scale inflatables to forms made from soft materials to materials that simply look soft. These artists are making works that demand attention - forms that are not simply bumped into while looking at paintings. In the 20th Century, artists began to disassemble the notion of traditional sculpture by adding and subtracting constructions, incorporating found objects and designating everyday items as art. These adaptive and divergent methods of form making continue today in a generation of artists who define sculpture in the negative condition: not bronze, not stone, not the macho force of the blast furnace. The materials in this exhibition encompass air, inflatable nylon, unfired clay and plastics bags – materials that have been co-opted for their versatility and their mutability between function and emotion. Some of the works require activation – such as electricity or inflation to become whole while others inhabit their softness quietly.

19 May – 22 July 24

Soft Core investigates these practices by presenting existing works and newly commissioned works from 12 Australian and International artists who question the fluctuating meaning of what it means to be soft. Tully Arnot, Mikala Dwyer, Tully Moore, Tony Oursler, Michael Parekowhai, Patricia Piccinini, Todd Robinson, Koji Ryui, Kathy Temin, Louise Weaver, Simon Yates and Paul Yore. An exhibition curated by Micheal Do, in conjunction with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and toured by Museums & Galleries of NSW. Art is… Festival

Art is… a footprint – making your mark In 1995, members of the Horsham arts community posed the question, what is art, what role does art play in our lives and how can the arts shape and change our community? After 23 successful years, the Art is… festival celebrates the rich tapestry of arts, culture and community over a ten day period and is now our premier winter festival. Participate, celebrate, and create new memories with a program that is rich and diverse and has something for everyone. Horsham Town Hall will be transformed with Festoon a new visual arts installation by three local artists Mary French, Alison Eggleton, Nichola Clarke and Helen Blandford. The old world of dance hall days will be recreated with the largest community dance event in the Inaugural Dance Affair. Art play Sunday offers an afternoon of children’s activity to engage and enthral. Make your own mark this June when you enjoy the various performances, exhibitions, panel discussions, markets, food and drink that celebrate our community.

The full program will be launched in late April. Visit artiswimmera.com for further news and details.

ART IS... 2018

Art of the Festoon Art of the Festoon celebrates the traditions of the ‘social dance’ in which the ‘hall and foyer’ was transformed through visual art installations. Central to the art of festooning were floral arrangements and sways of fabric. Drawing on these traditions, Festoon brings the 1930’s into today, through a series of large scale sculptural installations in Horsham Town Hall’s own dance hall. The architecture of the old and new foyer will come alive with the ‘art of festooning’ through digital light and shadow projections and sculptural installations to echo decorative elements of the social dance. Art is… Festival

Benny Walker + Alice Skye The song lines of Benny Walker and Alice Skye will crossover in this very special concert event as part of the June long weekend for the Art is… Festival.

to Alice Skye is country Victoria. Growing up aside the Grampians and no shortage of inspiration – music was unavoidable. It’s just her and her piano.

Hailing from Echuca, Benny Walker a Yorta Yorta man, has been described lyrically ‘his music is the real deal’! His love songs and epic tales are mixed with passion for people, the land, summer vibes and deep grooves that reach the soul. Capturing hearts with darker tracks reflecting the shadowy side of us, this talented musician has many accolades and awards for his music style. Alice is a singer-songwriter, Wergaia woman and universal little sister. Now living in Melbourne, home

Alice songs sparkle with a sensitivity and maturity well beyond her years, accompanied by the gentle and hauntingly sparse melodies of a piano score. Very like young British singer-songwriter Birdy, Alice’s voice is a combination of hopeful and haunting, naturally sweet and slow and dreamlike. Her stripped back piano melodies elevate the gentle moodiness of her songwriting, transforming her once bedroom scribblings into well-crafted and articulated lyrics on love, loss and life.
