JULY–SEPTEMBER 2018
The Horsham Town Hall acknowledges the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk people and their continued relationship to work together as custodians of culture, country, heritage, lore and language, and pay our respect for these lands and waters of traditional owners past and present.
Welcome to our latest edition of the Horsham Town Hall and Regional Art Gallery quarterly publication. The venue’s commitment to present a diverse range of theatre experiences will be at the fore-front of the theatre program for winter. Drama in its many facets will create conversation and dialogue about family, faith and cultural heritage in three unique theatre pieces crafted by gifted and talented Australian playwrights. Hannie Rayson’s semi-autobiographical family saga, Hotel Sorrento tells the tale of three sisters whose different life choices still resonates 20 years after the original presentation. Religion, politics and one’s personal faith will be explored through a unique new theatre experience. Sit within this specially built chapel housed upon the theatre stage and join two actors as they evoke opinion and thought in this incredibly well written piece by David Williams in Quiet Faith. Hell Ship – the Journey of the Ticonderoga captures the human spirit and the aspects in what is essentially a dark story. Written by Australian comedian and writer Michael Veitch. This story about Michael’s great-great grandfather who was the Ticonderoga Ship Doctor, demonstrates human strength that even in a dying ship’s hull there is always something small that up lifts us all. Joining Michael will be his son who will also provide the musical soundtrack.
After presenting the work of leading international artists in the fun and engaging exhibition Soft Core, the Horsham Regional Art Gallery transforms into The Studio, a place our community can come together socially and undertake a series of workshops in drawing, watercolours, pastels and meditation to name a few. The Gallery will then become home to the amazing Australian film of Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, based on the detailed paintings of Archibald Prize favourite Del Kathryn Barton. This exhibition allows you to step behind the camera and into the creative process with never-before-seen handmade props and a soundtrack by Sarah Blasko and some of Australia’s most celebrated voices, including Mia Wasikowska, Geoffrey Rush and David Wenham. The team at the Horsham Town Hall continually strive to present a cultural program that is diverse, unique and challenging, and I encourage you to celebrate and participate in a wide range of cultural and community events over the winter months for your pleasure. Soft Core Soft Core presents artistic practices that explore the many facets of ‘softness’ - from large-scale inflatables to forms made from soft materials to materials that simply look soft. These artists are making works that demand attention - forms that are not simply bumped into while looking at paintings.
Tully Arnot, Mikala Dwyer, Tully Moore, Tony Oursler, Michael Parekowhai, Patricia Piccinini, Todd Robinson, Koji Ryui, Kathy Temin, Louise Weaver, Simon Yates and Paul Yore.
Soft Core investigates these practices by presenting existing works and newly commissioned works from 12 Australian and International artists who question the fluctuating meaning of what it means to be soft.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.

Janet MATTHEWS, It’s our tree – cotton top tamarins nd (detail), pencil on paper, On loan from the Estate of Maureen Mann A Horsham Regional Art Gallery partnership
As collectors of wildlife art for over twenty years, the late Bill and Maureen Mann built up an exquisite collection that revealed their deep appreciation for Australia’s and Africa’s unique fauna. They developed relationships with key Australian wildlife artists that would grow to admiration, for their ability could convey the character of any bird or animal. From this collection, we celebrate the abundance of bird life and animals unique to our region and across this broad continent. The fragility of the environment, as an underlying concern of wildlife artists, is revealed in the artwork of Michael Munday, Robert Mancini, Janet Flinn, Robert Ulmann, and Annette Taylor. This exhibition presents the complexity of visual styles and illustrates the remarkable use of mediums and methods by these artists to convey their experience of wildlife and the environment.

Tubular Bells for Two One Album. Two Men. Too Many Instruments. Ask anyone who grew up through the 70’s and they will be able to tell you exactly where they were when they first heard Tubular Bells. Now, more than 40 years on, two multi-instrumentalists are presenting this modern masterpiece in a challenging live event.

WORKSHOP
The Studio This winter the Horsham Regional Art Gallery’s ground floor will transform into The Studio. Using artworks from the Collection the galleries will become places of reflection, inspiration, and action. We will celebrate the making process with a series of artist lead workshops in watercolour, pastel, drawing; life and still. Explore pattern and form through jewellery making and basic printmaking. Movement, meditation and long looking will take centre stage. Even our youngest makers will be accommodated with a messy play space.
A space of action, practice and reflection, an artist’s studio can take many forms, and be found in many spaces. From hard won space at the kitchen table for bursts of creativity to a room of one’s own which houses the tools of your trade, objects of inspiration, and ambitious dreams. For some the studio is a solo escape, for others it only comes alive when shared with collaborators, subjects, or their peers sharing the space and the creative process. These workshops are aimed to be social, enjoy a glass of wine, a cup of tea, or a lager as you and your friends learn new skills. Workshops will occur morning, afternoon and evening; to view the whole program and to book a place visit our website. This winter get your friends together and let’s get creative. EXHIBITION
Del Kathryn Barton: The Nightingale and the Rose Showcasing the hauntingly beautiful collaboration between acclaimed artist Del Kathryn Barton, celebrated director Brendan Fletcher and awardwinning visual effects house Method Studios, this milestone exhibition traces the interpretation of Oscar Wilde’s 19th century classic through a sophisticated artistic lens. A shining example of multidisciplinary partnerships across the creative arts, Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose has its genesis in a commission by ArtAnd Foundation (previously Art&Australia), who asked Del Kathryn Barton in 2010 to reimagine a timeless fairytale. Layered with a stirring score by Sarah Blasko and voiced by some of Australia’s most celebrated actors, including Mia Wasikowska, Geoffrey Rush and David Wenham, the film is an intense but remarkably ethereal gesture to the tragic earnestness of Wilde’s tale.

Michael Veitch captures the human aspects in what is essentially a dark story. Even in a dying ship’s hull there is always some small thing that a wry sense of humour can find to lift us out of the putrid desolation that marks our history.
In 1852, the emigrant ship Ticonderoga struggled into Port Melbourne after a nightmare voyage from England in which nearly 200 of her passengers had died of typhus. Her saga of tragedy, loss and heroism gripped the people of our young nation like nothing before.
Why this story? The surgeon was actually Michael’s great-great-grandfather - James William Henry Veitch. A story repeatedly told to Michael all his young life by his own father he has carried it and explored it all these years. With pieces of music from the era performed by Michael’s son, there will be the web of four generations of Veitch on stage. This is truly a family story.
The ship’s surgeon, whose voyage on the Ticonderoga was his first – as well as his last – time at sea, takes us on what was meant to be a grand adventure from the shores of England, but ended in makeshift quarantine at Port Nepean.

PERFORMANCE
Kick Up The Artz
Lord of the Flies A stage play adapted by Nigel Williams from the 1954 novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author William Golding, Lord of the Flies tells the disturbing tale of a group of British school boys stranded on an island and the tension caused by fear and power. This violent tale of the breakdown of civilized behaviour in a setting of isolation and fear highlights the contrast between cooperation and competition. The story is set against the background of some type of nuclear war and a plane crash that forces a group of British boys to cope with the human need for society and the animal need for survival. While protecting themselves from the outward threat of the beast, they discover that the real threat is their own primitive impulses. Kick Up The Artz is a local acting and creative movement training studio preparing young people for future adventures in the arts.
