As the flowers start to bloom and we start the transition into spring of 2018, we reflect on what has been a special year for the Horsham Town Hall. After many years of planning our community rejoiced with the return of The Australian Ballet and Opera Australia to our stage. These well-known renowned companies’s now call Horsham a place to perform, to engage and deliver incredible experiences to our region. The Horsham Regional Gallery delivered The Studio a social, creative workshop program that activated the gallery for visitors. In October we welcome Raquel Ormella to our city through the presentation of her touring exhibition I hope you get this. An incisive look at contemporary work, work ware and how we craft national identity, Ormella’s practice celebrates textiles, the handmade and the symbols of Australia. Celebrated portraitist Rod McNicol visits and offers to share is skill in crafting photographic portraits with our community in a masterclass, and we celebrate the Horsham artists

The music of John Farnham, Tom Jones and Elvis and Ian Moss will delight anyone who has fond memories of the music that defined their youth. Our final show of our 2018 season, B2M Mamanta, will rock audiences with their stunning combinations of traditional songlines and life experiences from the Aboriginal and Tiwi Islands. Whilst in Horsham they will engage in local music workshops to educate the future generation through music and encouraging people to make a change. The Theatre continues to be very popular with both local and touring productions. Horsham Arts Council’s commitment to growing local talent will astound audiences again with the fun and infectious Little Shop of Horrors, personally I cannot wait to see Audrey! Mayor Cr. Pam Clarke

SPECIAL EVENT
Child in the Wild Child in the Wild is an interactive installation that enables human participants and a child robot to cocreate an immersive audio visual artwork through the use of the robot’s artificial neural networks to enable object and image recognition.
Over time the image and sound disintegrates into its component pixels and sonic grains, which, via an artificial intelligence network, agitate into co-evolving colour and sound fields and re-influence the child robot’s perceptions.
The child robot placed within a stroller interacts with visitors to the gallery. Participants show the child robot objects or pictures on their mobile device and the child robot will try to guess and say what the object is. The child robot’s perception of the material world is audio-visually displayed via projection on to the gallery walls and floor, and surround sound system.
Child in the Wild is a free performance accessible to all ages. Everybody loves a robot!

Collaborating with the Ghost: Belinda Eckermann Located on a sand ridge on Lake Albacutya a small cylindrical hole inhabited by the Bardi Grub inspired Rainbow based artist Belinda Eckermann. The Bardi grubs existence goes largely unremarked, until the resultant Ghost Moth emerges as a terrifying spectre. Concepts of fear and disconnect with the agricultural environment and nature have been ongoing themes within Eckermanns’ practice. The Ghost Moth’s perceived threat is due to its individual size and appearance evoking repulsion. The native Ghost Moth poses no threat to our ecosystem or agriculture.

This is fear born of ignorance, their actual lack of threat contributing to their anonymity. Eckermann’s collaborative drawings with the ghost moths reveal their hidden beauty in stark contrast to their terrifying appearance. “The work in this exhibition echoes the transient life cycle of the Bardi grub and transformative concepts within the art making process. Harnessing the grubs’ metamorphosis into a Ghost moth, I utilise this moth as a mark maker within my drawings.” Belinda Eckermann

A line through landscape: Amabile Dalfarra-Smith Amabile Dalfarra-Smith’s practice is rooted in her connection to place and her relationship with Western Victoria’s landscape. Her work is influenced by photography, as well as her training as a graphic designer. The essence of the place inspire Dalfarra-Smith’s personal responses to nature. These interpretations may be realistic, but often develop more abstractly through seeking to see the world from more than simply a pedestrian’s point of view. A line through landscape offers a survey of linocuts, paintings and drawings from 1994 through to 2018, focusing on Dalfarra-Smith’s relationship with nature and her unique style which incorporates realism,

Well-known for her Eucalyptus Series, Dalfarra-Smith renders unusual perspectives and uses cast shadows to describe form and emphasise space. The exhibition employs a wide variety of media, including video, painting, installation, drawing, textile and zine production, revealing Ormella’s experimental relationship with textiles and a playful exploration of semiotics, critical hallmarks of her sustained practice. Ormella’s works aim to stimulate contemplation, connection and engagement with issues of our times, without making her own position necessarily explicit. Very often, the materials she uses are things that we all have at home, or for the hoarders amongst us, in some of our cupboards. The title of this show, ‘I hope you get this’ refers not only to her own position within the works, but also to our reading of these various subjects. She invites visitors to engage, to reflect, and bring their own understanding and experiences to the show at the same time. EXHIBITION + MASTERCLASS
Portraits from my Village: Rod McNicol Forty years ago in 1978, Rod McNicol moved into an old warehouse space in Smith Street, Fitzroy that was being vacated by the infamous Nightshift Theatre Group. Rod transformed this warehouse theatre into a unique, daylight studio-home, from which he has been working from ever since. Right from his very first introduction to photography several years earlier at Prahran College, Rod had been drawn to a certain genre of photographic portraiture, one that was quiet and very direct to the camera. “I was obsessed by the self-conscious stare back to the camera so evident in 19th century photography.” So the course was set; Rod had both his obsession and the perfect studio to use to explore it! The first resulting exhibition,

A Portrait, was shown in Melbourne in 1985, then Krakow, Poland in 1986 and finally in Paris in 1987. For four decades now, Rod—who still lives and works in the same studio—has gone on to produce many different series of brazen but tender portraits, always drawing his subjects from the rich subcultural life around him, in that vibrant inner city area he terms his ‘urban village’. Please bring a camera, smart phone or ipad to take photos. Meet the Artist: Rod McNicol
Join us for a floor talk by exhibiting artist Rod McNicol on his current exhibition Portraits from my Village. Rod will discuss his process and long-standing photographic practice.
Rod McNicol (b. 1946) is a Melbourne-based photographic artist, known for his intimate and existential formalist portraiture. For over four decades, McNicol has been inviting people from his inner-city home in Fitzroy, to put their lives on pause for a few moments and stare into the lens of his camera. McNicol co-founded The Photographers Gallery in South Yarra in 1975, and has held numerous solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas. McNicol has been awarded the Australian Photographic Portrait Prize in 2004, and the National Photographic Portrait Prize in 2012, with a portrait of his friend, actor Jack Charles, whom McNicol has been photographing since the 1970s.

SPECIAL EVENT
Art After Dark: Raquel Ormella + TERROR NULLIUS Enter the Gallery after dark as exhibiting artist Raquel Ormella takes us on an intimate tour of her exhibition I hope you get this. This survey exhibition includes works in a variety of media, with a particular focus on her experimental textiles. The exhibition explores key themes that Ormella has consistently developed in her work: social and environmental activism; human and animal relationships; nationalism and national identity. We will then enter the theatre for a special screening in Horsham of politically searing new film TERROR NULLIUS by Australian collaborative duo Soda_Jerk.
Soda_Jerk’s TERROR NULLIUS is a political revenge fable which offers an un-writing of Australian national mythology. This experimental samplebased film works entirely within and against the official archive to achieve a queering and othering of Australian cinema. Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and not-so-nice white guys finish last. Where idyllic beaches host race-riots, governments poll love-rights, and the perils of hypermasculinity are overshadowed only by the enduring horror of Australia’s colonising myth of terra nullius. Experience this new master work on the big screen of the Horsham Town Hall Theatre. Soda_ Jerk, TERROR NULLIUS 2018, HD video (detail film still), 54mins, courtesy the artists

Ian Moss 2018 Acoustic Solo Respected as one of Australia’s iconic musicians, Ian Moss delivers an unforgettable sound – not only as a telling soloist on guitar but especially with his silken voice, ringing with clarity and resonating with pure soul. While primarily recognised as an axeman of tenacity and sweet melodic sensibility, Ian’s distinctive vocal is the essential signature of his soulful, bluesy muse – as it has been since his first tentative foray into music during the early 1970s. Born and raised in Alice Springs, Ian started playing guitar in local teenage bands but moved to Adelaide after failing one of his high school years, planning to repeat in the big city. Fate intervened when he answered an advertisement for a guitarist in a shop window in 1973, joining the band that was to become a legend in Australia and that made such an undeniable impact that they are now etched in the Australian music psyche forever. That band was Cold Chisel. 2018 will bring a new chapter in Ian’s career as he releases the new self-titled studio album, his sixth, and heads to regional Australia armed with his acoustic guitar and incredible songs.

B2M Building on their international touring acclaim, B2M (Bathurst to Melville), are embarking on their first major national tour as they showcase their new album with its unique blend of contemporary and traditional sound. Described as Indigenous Australia’s answer to the Backstreet Boys, B2M was formed by seven Indigenous men from the Tiwi Islands whose sound can only be described as RnB Pop with a traditional Tiwi twist. The lyrics in their songs come from their life experiences growing up in an Aboriginal community and seeing first-hand the effects of drugs and alcohol on their own people. Educating the kids of the future through their music and encouraging people to make a change in their lives is what keeps this band going. In the words of lead vocalist Jeffrey ‘Yello’ Simon: ‘We are giving the kids a voice through music.’ “B2M… wow, the music, the joy, the talent – it was contagious. It would have been a standing ovation that demanded an encore – but everyone was already on their feet dancing!” Pheadra Watts, Artistic Director, Nannup Music Festival

Both surreal and sublime, Salt Pool embraces and subverts the traditions of landscape photography and the conventions of commercial fashion photography through feminist statement. This all-inclusive event including bus transfer to and from Horsham will celebrate our unique landscape, two talented young artists taking their practice to the world and building the Horsham Regional Art Gallery Collection. Tangential Exchange Common to human experience are the particular moments of realisation which apparently form from nowhere, sudden understanding of a previously cryptic concept or the rush of inspiration when it strikes. Not without hard work or diligence, there is inherent wisdom in the understanding that often something comes from nothing. Be it the fertile void, space for inventiveness created by a clear mind or apparently empty task, or the accidental muse which moves us forward; random acts and improvisation can wield tangential influence over creative work. Tangential Exchange explores the artistic practice of several Australian and New Zealand artists who draw

inspiration from the unexpected. Some artworks have developed unintentionally through other projects, anecdotal evidence of different intentions; some works have developed through fleeting, personal encounters; while others see the possibility of the unremarkable reinvented. Like a bolt from the blue from the stream of collective consciousness these artists draw insight from unforeseen and overlooked places. Recent Acquisitions Each year the Horsham Art Gallery Trust supports the purchase of new artworks to build the Horsham Regional Art Gallery Collection. The Gallery works with three members of our community to explore current trends and their relationship to the Collection. Exhibitions are visited, websites viewed, articles shared, reports written, a shortlist is made and the artworks are assessed against the Horsham Regional Art Gallery Collection Policy. In 2018 a series of works have been purchased that enhance our ability to reflect the state of our nation and share the concerns of artists at this time.
The photography of Australia’s First Nations people has become a significant component of our Collection of Australian photographic practice. This year we welcome work by James Tylor, Kent Morris and Destiny Deacon. Deacon uses our obsession with football and humour to investigate our representation of indigenous people, while Morris and Tylor each in their own way illustrate that culture is ongoing, and connected to the natural world be it urban or the bush. Interference Pattern: Rebecca Najdowski and Vivian Cooper Smith What does it mean to make landscape photographs today? Interference Pattern challenges the conventions of landscape photography by bringing together the work of Rebecca Najdowski and Vivian Cooper Smith to form new temporal images - landscapes in flux. Their artwork is formed through studio and darkroom interventions with landscape imagery derived from the Wimmera region. Working from photographic film, Rebecca manipulates their structure — cutting, scratching, burning, tearing, stapling, folding— to give a sense of additiveerasure and draw attention to how photographs frame nature.
Vivian primarily uses re-photography, adding further disruption to this process through visual obstructions to the lens such as crystals and mirrors as well as introducing movement of the prints during long exposure. The results are landscape images largely untethered from any identifiable location but resonant with the site and performance of making, embracing the idea that photographic materials, camera, photographer and subject-matter are active and equal participants in the process.
