Diagnosis: Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition in which a baby is born with a shallow acetabulum and undercoverage of the femoral head by the acetabulum. Early diagnosis is important as it allows early treatment, minimizing the need for surgery, while missed diagnosis can lead to abnormal gait, limb length discrepancy, and premature osteoarthritis. Ultrasound is the first line imaging modality for evaluating babies suspected of DDH. Diminished α angle (< 60°) and less than 50% coverage of the femoral head are indicative of DDH. If detected early, DDH is treated with a Pavlik harness. Delayed diagnosis or severe cases may require surgical reduction and Spica casting.
