Diagnosis: Rheumatoid Arthritis with Rice Bodies “Rice bodies” have been reported as a finding in synovial or bursal spaces, manifesting as numerous uniform-sized rice-like foci. Case reports have associated rice bodies with mycobacterial infection, rheumatoid arthritis, and synovial chondromatosis. Imaging may help differentiate these diagnoses, but arthrocentesis or surgical removal may be necessary for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In the current patient, culture analysis of the fluid in the subacromial subdeltoid bursa was negative for any bacteria, and the patient was ultimately diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
