Clinical History
58 year old female with a painful palpable nodule on the plantar aspect of her right foot.
Diagnosis: Plantar Fibroma
A plantar fibroma is benign fibrous proliferation of the plantar fascia.
Plantar fibromas have a characteristic sonographic appearance of fusiform ovoid thickening along the plantar fascia with hypoechogenicity.
Uncommonly, intralesional vascularity may be seen (as in this case).
Treatment is often conservative, with surgical excision rarely indicated.
Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection may help to shrink the fibroma and thereby relieve discomfort from pressure upon the nodule during ambulation.
