How to Set Up a Comprehensive Program in Your Practice

JUNE 10, 2011 Sponsored by Hospital for Special Surgery Office of Continuing Medical Education LOCATION Richard L. Menschel Education Center Hospital for Special Surgery, 535 E. 70th Street, New York City

STATEMENT OF NEED Fragility fractures secondary to osteoporosis account for more than 1.5 million fractures in the United States each year. Studies have shown that initiating a treatment plan for osteoporosis at the time of a fragility fracture has a positive impact on preventing secondary fractures. However, the rate of initiating treatment for osteoporosis following a fragility fracture is between 5 to 30 percent. This is caused in part by the lack of consensus about who is responsible for initiating treatment and lack of knowledge about diagnosis, medications and long-term treatment plans. As a result of participation in this activity, practitioners will be able to set up a comprehensive, up-to-date program to accurately diagnose and treat osteoporosis at the time of fragility fractures in their own practice.

■ Initiate and maintain treatment plans for patients with osteoporosis and establish a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment program in their own practices

ACCREDITATION Hospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

FRAGILITY FRACTURES SECONDARY TO OSTEOPOROSIS ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION FRACTURES IN THE UNITED STATES EACH YEAR.

TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is targeted at primary care physicians, specialty physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, orthopaedists, medical students, residents and fellows.

OBJECTIVES HSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to: ■ Properly diagnose and treat fragility fractures ■ Understand the evidence-based strategies and pharmaceuticals available to treat osteoporosis and be able to prescribe them appropriately in their practice ■ Determine or understand who is responsible for initiating treatment plans for patients with osteoporosis and intend to take the responsibility for creating comprehensive, long-term osteoporosis treatment plans for patients

Hospital for Special Surgery designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The AMA has determined that physicians not licensed in the United States but who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

SPECIAL NEEDS Hospital for Special Surgery is accessible for individuals with disabilities or special needs. Participants with special needs are requested to contact the Office of CME at 212.606.1812.

FACULTY DISCLOSURE In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s Standards for Commercial Support, all CME providers are required to disclose to the activity audience the relevant financial relationships of the planners, teachers, and authors involved in the development of CME content.
