Clinical Approach to the Evaluation & Treatment of Congenital Muscular Torticollis LOCATION: RICHARD L. MENSCHEL EDUCATION CENTER ■ HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY ■ 535 EAST 70TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY
Overview This program will discuss etiology, incidence, differential diagnosis, therapeutic and surgical interventions for children with torticollis. Guidelines for examination and progression of treatment, as well as discharge will be discussed. Day 2 will be a laboratory component and live demonstration focusing on therapeutic handling for infants of various ages.
Statement of Need Muscular torticollis affects between 0.4 to 2 percent of newborn children. It is the third most common congenital deformity after hip dislocation and clubfoot. With the implementation of the back to sleep program by the American Academy of Pediatrics, therapists are noting increased incidence of children with positional torticollis and plagiocephally (flattening of the head). An understanding of the anatomy, etiology and presentation of torticollis is important for early diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Nonsurgical treatment of torticollis can be extremely successful but it requires education of therapists providing services in homes, clinics and the community. This program will teach therapists how to successfully examine and treat
patients with torticollis, using current evidence and accepted treatment strategies.
Target Audience This activity is targeted at physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists and certified occupational therapist assistants.
Learning Objectives Hospital for Special Surgery professional education activities are intended to improve knowledge, competence and performance of our learners and to lead to better patient care. At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to: ■ Describe the etiology of torticollis ■ Demonstrate an understanding of anatomy, kinesiology and infant development as affected by torticollis ■ Identify examination techniques for assessment of torticollis ■ Differentiate the principles of treatment progression ■ Apply appropriate handling techniques for infants with congenital muscular torticollis.
Accreditation Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education.
