ARTHROSCOPY OF JOINTS

ARTHROSCOPY OF JOINTS Arthroscopy is an operative intervention for exploring and treatment of the damages in the internal part of joints such as the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, elbow and wrist in different orthopedic and traumatic conditions. Arthroscopy, as a minimally invasive surgical procedure, represents insertion of camera in the joint through small opening, so

precise and correct diagnoses is made. Furthermore, through another opening (portal), special microsurgical instruments are inserted that can be used for performing different surgical procedures such as removal of free joint bodies, refreshment of the cartilage and cleaning the joints from degenerative diseases

called portal. The camera is connected to a screen where excellent visualization is obtained, of the internal part of the joint with all its structures and this way the joint is explored and

of the cartilage, sewing menisci and removal of torn meniscus, reconstruction of torn ligaments, shoulder decompression, fractures in the area of the knee, the ankle etc.

Routine medical tests are made before the surgery (clinical, laboratory and RTG) for assessment of the general condition of the patient, and the operative intervention is performed in general or regional anesthesia. The advantage of arthroscopy

in relation to the open surgical procedures of joints is precisely in its non-invasiveness – always only two small cuts of the skin of 3-4mm are used for the portals, one for the insertion of camera, and the other for the surgical instruments. Arthroscopy is a one-day surgery with an opportunity for quick postoperative rehabilitation and excellent cosmetic effect. It is a minimally invasive surgery, secure method that provides exact diagnostics and at the same time appropriate treatment of damaged structures.

This is especially important for athletes, recreational and active population who mostly hurt joints, muscles and bones and who need quick, secure diagnostics and treatment for quick rehabilitation and return to everyday activities. Overall, arthroscopy represents contemporary minimally invasive procedure that is a golden standard in diagnostics and treatment of many injuries and diseases of joint structures.
