Definition of ESL and Multilingual Writers “Many of them have grown up speaking languages other than English at home, their communities, and in schools; others began to acquire English at a very young age and have used it alongside their native language. To many, English may be the third, fourth or fifth language. Many second-language writers are highly literate in their first language, while others have never learned to write in their mother tongue. Some are even native speakers of languages without a written form” (The Conference on College Composition and Communication) Myths of Working with Multilingual or Nonnative English Speakers - taken from The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring Chapter 9. Myth#1-NNS Writers have week command of standard written English. Myth #2-NNS writers come to the Writing Center to get their grammar checked. Myth #3-I need to clean up the grammar in NNS writers’ papers before we can get to higher-order concerns. Myth #4-I need to be well versed in the terminology of English grammar and usage if I am to tutor NNS writers. Myth #5- I‘ll need to be a much more directive tutor with NNS writers.
