What should you know about high blood cholesterol? Well, first of all, there are many reasons for which you should know something about high cholesterol, and there are things that you may be concerned about. Over time, fat, cholesterol and other substances can build up on the walls of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and this can slow or even block blood to the heart. Among many other things, blood helps by carrying a constant supply of oxygen to the heart. The lack of oxygen leads to heart muscle weakness, which results in chest pain, heart attacks and even death. Until late in the disease process, for many people there are no warning symptoms or signs. In America, one of the leading causes of death is heart disease. Smoking, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and this has been known by scientists for a long time now. It has been shown through recent researches that the risk of developing atherosclerosis or coronary heart disease usually only increases as the blood cholesterol increases. It has been proven that this risk can be reduced by avoiding smoking and controlling high blood pressure and of course, lowering high blood cholesterol. What should you eat to lower your high blood cholesterol? As shown before, high blood cholesterol is a serious problem. One of the three major modifiable risk factors for coronary heart disease is high blood pressure along with cigarette smoking. Approximately 25 percent of the adult population of 20 years or above has high blood cholesterol levels. And by high, it is understood high enough to be in need of intensive medical attention. More than half of the people living in the United States suffer from a blood cholesterol level that is higher than "desirable" You need to take steps to lower your cholesterol level because it is such a great risk to your health. Making sure you eat foods that are low in cholesterol and saturated fats is the best way to do this. A total cholesterol level in the range of 200-239 md/dl is considered to be "borderline-high" blood cholesterol and the risk for coronary heart disease is higher than in case of those with lower levels. However, if you lack different other factors that increase the risk of coronary heart disease like high blood pressure, family history of heart disease before the age of 45, cigarette smoking, vascular disease, diabetes and obesity - then you are not in need of intensive medical attention.
