General Information Jabiru Mycteria
The largest stork in America. Called Jabiru Mycteria. In Costa Rica the Jabiru has a very restricted distribution area. We can find them in Ca単o Negro and in Palo Verde. This bird is very easy to recognize, they are extremely large and also because of the coloring of their plumage. They can be more than five feet tall and with their wings open from end to end they can have a length of more than eight feet. They eat fish, frogs and smaller mammals but their favorite food is eels. They can catch eels that are 60cm long. They are monogamous, meaning that they mate for life. The formation of couples begins in the wetlands with a beautiful dance. One of them takes a twig with their beak and will dance around the other bird. If they are accepted they will both do the same dance with their large wings stretched open. These birds are in danger of being extinct in Costa Rica because of the destruction of the wetlands.
