Known as Academic Year of the old men (some have been to the Dutch East Indies). In August 1949, Horecaf takes over the school from Bedrijfshoreca. Ms Korevaer becomes head of the boarding school.

“On Thursday night we went out and we ran straight through The Hague to the Laan van Meerdervoort, to the new butcher Mr Slootweg who was going to teach us how to butcher a cow or pig. Arriving one minute too late was not acceptable according to Mr Slootweg. When we came back to school, they were also watching the clock. (....) But all in all my time at the school was a good time where we actually leant a profession.”

“Cheeeeese! That one word that everybody knew in the year 1955-1957 (...), because every other day we got cheese for breakfast. The war was quite fresh, it had been ten years. Everything was being rebuilt and people were penny-pinching. There was not a serious lack of food, but I wouldn’t say there was an abundance of food either. So we got ‘beschuit met muisjes (a sweet Dutch breakfast) and jam’ on one day and on the other day we got: cheeeeese!”

The ladies live and sleep in the Villa, whereas the men live and sleep in the school building. Sportweekend Maastricht: Horecaf Hotelschool students visit their colleagues in Maastricht for a weekend filled with sport activities.

“These years were the first in which a relation was created between the school and the Royal Dutch Family. I was one of the students who was allowed to serve, amongst many other guests, Prince Bernhard. The opening of the school meant the end of the period of Assendelftstraat/Badhotel. We were lucky to have experienced both and we are now able to think back to the times at the Assendelftstraat as well as the Brusselselaan. ”

Mr Overwater, French lecturer, has new plans for managing the school. In 1970 those plans are realised. Mr Overwater becomes Director of the school. Soon it shows that lecturers don’t have enough time to prepare their subject materials according to the new method. It results in the resigning of Mr Overwater and the school governors.

Mr Rogge, Dr E.Th. Cassee, Mr Van Eeghen, Mr Pieters and Mr Schuit become the new school governors. Mr A. Mostert starts working on a new timetable: introducing semesters. Students are now able to start the course every half year.

The world around the school changes quickly. New laws are introduced & changes in the industry are made. In 1992, the boarding school, called Skotel, in the Zwolsestraat is opened, with 256 beds for the students, 21 hotel rooms and a gym. The building is opened by Michael Hirst, CEO of Hilton International.

In the 90’s, Hotelschool Den Haag (The Hague) launches its Fast Track Programme for students with previous qualification in hospitality management. This gives students the opportunity to receive their diploma within approximately three years. This attracts many international students.

Internal Jubilee Conference is held on 19 March 2004 as part of the 75th Anniversary of Hotelschool Den Haag (The Hague). The theme of the conference is the ‘Art of hospitality’, both from a historical and visionary point of view.
