#5. MYKONOS Mykonos is the most famous cosmopolitan island, a whitewashed paradise in the heart of the Cyclades. It looks like a paradise white little houses with flowers and blue windows and doors, hand painted streets, windmills, pigeon keepers, chimneys, lots of little churches and wonderful restaurants and cafes. Mykonos attracts tourists from everywhere with it’s white beaches, crystal clear sea and crazy parties during the day and night. Most days of the week, there will be at least one cruise ship docked with people off the ships either driven close to the town via coach or brought into the main harbour by smaller boats. The beaches on the south shore of the island have the best sand, view and are protected from the wind. The north coast beaches are less developed but just as beautiful. They are less organized and crowded and most suitable for those in search of a bit of calm. One of the most scenic corners of the island is Alefkántra or “Little Venice”, an 18th century district, dominated by grand captains’ mansions with colourful balconies and stylish windows. Another ancient settlement of Mykonos is Áno Merá, situated around the historic monastery of Panayia Tourliani . Be sure that you visit both of them before you leave.
