wins for hotlines sponsored riders at the uk’s first enduro world series event.

Hosted for the first time in the UK, round 2 of the Enduro World Series Expo was hosted right in the heart of the Scottish Borders in the Royal Burgh of Peebles. The two week cycling festival of Tweedlove set the stage for the event on some of the most technical and challenging stages to date in the EWS calendar. "The hardest EWS race" were the words of Enrico Guala at the podium ceremony. While the Scottish Borders don’t have the biggest hills in the world, the riders were faced with a gruelling 140km in the saddle and 3,000m of climbing. And the some of the descents were, without a doubt, the toughest we have yet seen at the EWS. Born and bred Peebles local and WTB UK Enduro Team rider Gary Forrest had been preparing hard for the race since the dates were released back in August 2013. “I was really excited

about racing in my own back garden and on trails that have made the Tweed Valley an iconic location for any mountain biker.”

So excited that after day one was lying in 8th position overall! With another gruelling 40km and 1500 metres of climbing on the second day, Gary held onto his winning speed and finished 10th overall.

“Having home comforts and my own bed to sleep in, as

WTB Team mate Rob Williams placed a respectable 51st place overall in his first ever EWS.

“The tracks are not too different from what I ride in South Wales so I felt at home pretty quickly. I've had a good couple of races in Europe so far this season and I felt fit and strong going

A little disaster when a spectator stepped off the trail in front of Greg on the initial climb and obscured a sign, meant he reached the stage transition with only a few minutes to spare.

“I actually got lost on the way to stage 1 so I had to absolutely tank it up the climb, so that killed my legs a lot for the day. Stage 3 and 4 were good, I went pretty hard on stage 4, I couldn’t have done any more I don’t think”

“3 was a bit of a sprint, when I got to the bottom there was a bit of a mad crowd there so I went a bit wild in the woods. 4 was good it was the last one, I could just leave everything out there. Luckily I came around and I could see Curtis Keene right on top of it so that gave me a good kick and there was someone on top of it and he was really screaming at me so that gave me enough encouragement to silly as it sounds, has played a into the long weekend” get over it. The crowds were huge advantage for the way I Not only was it a great really good down the end. felt this weekend and obviously weekend for the WTB I’m delighted, if you had of refl ected on my result! The UK Enduro Team, Irish told me last week I would bike is running perfectly and ripper and Nukeproof have been 8th, I’d have been the WTB Vigilantes reign Factory Team Rider Greg over the world. Top 10 at the supreme on Tweed trails. Over Callaghan was on top form World Series? I’m stoked! the moon to get 10th and and had a fantastic race to I want to try and keep it the support on the trails was finish 8th overall! consistent now and not be a amazing.” Gary Quoted one hit wonder” [08]

Deity was founded in 2004 in Idaho USA by a bike mad couple who had a wealth of experience working for other brands within the industry. They had one common aim, to create the best possible mountain bike components with no compromises. Being a rider owned company means that Deity products tend to have an emphasis on quality, reliability, performance and aesthetics.

he brand started from humble beginnings with a dirt jump bias and a bold monochrome look. No Dirt jump bike was complete in the naughties without a set of white Deity handlebars. Company owner Eric Davies carefully reinvested every penny he could and gradually grew the company and broadened the product range. In more recent years that range has expanded to included components for DH and Enduro use, several signature products and the introduction of carbon. Every single product has been created with incredible attention to detail and a unique design approach which has led to a unique and highly desirable range of components.

ATHLETES

Deity have always worked closely with top riders in order to help them develop the best products that can be made. The current “bloodline includes some of the biggest names in DH, enduro and freeride. Names such as Cameron Zink, Tracy Mosely, Greg Watts, Tyler MCCaul, the legendary Shaun Palmer and the latest phenomenon, the Van Steenbergen brothers all have direct input on the evolution of Deity products. Working with such world class athletes not only makes for great products but it also gives the brand fantastic global exposure and credibility from riders that lead opinions across the world.

MICHELIN Pro 4 Service Course Testing has shown that the new rubber compound improves cornering speed by up to 16% in wet conditions.

The Michelin Pro 4 features a new improved rubber compound that balances high rolling speed and grip by using dual rubber compounds, tacky rubber for cornering on the shoulders and harder, faster rolling rubber in the middle of the tyre. GAERNE review the BORA REFLEX With bright visuals, strong detailing and graphics, the Reex offers a light, comfortable and well-fitting (for this wide footed tester) shoe. Stiff soled without being punishing, it has a nice and sturdy heel, which reduces lift and eliminates rub. During damp, cold rides they were warm enough and, coupled with overshoes, were good through the winter months. I've yet to test them in hot weather but I feel they may be a little lacking in ventilation as there are just holes on the side for heat loss, as opposed to meshing.

LYNSKEY review R230 With a generously-sloped top-tube, the R230 is a bigger bike than it looks-the top-tube is long for its size yielding a stretched, low riding position despite the relatively tall headtube. Lynskey uses an inset on its seatpost, with the smaller diameter post diameter introducing an extra line of bump-absorbing defence between you and the road.

Lynskey has an extremely long history with titanium - the Lynskey family founded Litespeed, subsequently selling it and a while later starting again under their own name. Lynskey makes an enormous range of Ti frames, alI built in Tennessee with 14 different models just in the road category. The R230 fits into the Sport series, aimed at club riders and occasional racers. The R230's main triangle is particularly stout, with oversized tubes everywhere. The down-tube is ovalised vertically at the headtube and horizontally at the bottom bracket to distribute material effectively. At the back, the seatstays are chunky but with a gentle arc intended to reduce road vibrations, running down to neat socket-style dropouts complete with a replaceable gear hanger. Lynskey has chosen to position the minimalist gear cable stops on the head-tube rather than the more conventional down-tube location. Welding the stops to the thick-walled head-tube rather than the thin down-tube makes sense structurally, but the position does force slightly tighter curves in the cables especially on small frame sizes or with short stems. Rivnut bottle bosses minimise welding to the down-tube too. [19]

The R230 is available in seven different sizes for spot-on fit for almost everyone. This is a real benefit of welded metal frames - it's much easier for manufacturers to produce lots of sizes compared with carbon. Imported Hotlines supplies Lynskeys as framesets (ÂŁ1600 for the R230 frame), leaving the build up to you. It put together a rather fine test bike using a full Shimano 105 groupset plus other parts from the Hotlines roster. We were particularly taken with the DT Swiss RR1450 wheels - they're very light, reasonably stiff and liven up the ride. As titanium bikes go, the R230 is definitely towards the racier end of the spectrum, as we'd expected. The girth some tubes make for a stout chassis that's ready to take anything you can throw at it, white the stout front end minimises twist during hard efforts despite the conventional untapered steerer. The long cockpit makes for a powerful, aggressive riding position, while the short back end keeps things nimble for a bit of cut and thrust.

DOUBLE BILL Tracy Moseley & Kye Forte

Name: Tracy Moseley. Hometown: Malvern. Discipline: Enduro. Years as a pro racer: 14. Greatest riding achievement: World Enduro Champion 2013, World DH Champion 2010. Greatest non riding achievement: Grade 7 Clarinet!

It's a great looking bar, how involved were you in developing the bar and what were

T

So you started working with Deity recently and have come out with the T-Mo Enduro bar, how did the connection with Deity come about? I met Eric and Sadie when racing the NORBA circuit in 2002. They were a great couple and have just stayed in touch since then, and a couple of years ago Eric approached me about sponsorship‌

you aiming to achieve? I wanted a lightweight, stiff and low rise bar for racing enduro. I gave Eric my ideal width, sweep and rise and my T-MO logo and he came up with the bar. You had an amazing year last year at the EWS and have had a really strong start to 2014, has enduro reinvigorated your enjoyment of racing? Yeah I am loving the Enduro racing and even more the places and trails it takes me to ! Just getting the chance to ride in some of the best places and riding trails with limited practice keeps its exciting.

MO

You've been quite involved in developing components for a few of your sponsors, is that an aspect of the job you enjoy? I really enjoy testing product and giving feedback and if I can help make products better then thats a good thing! And finally if you could spend tomorrow riding any trail in the world which one would it be? Any of the great trails in the valley below Verbier, one of my favourites is descending off the Col De Balme.

KYE Name: Kye Forte

Hometown: Newton Abbot Devon Discipline: BMX, DH

Years as a Pro racer? As a pro rider 15years, I have only been racing MTB for 2 years. Greatest riding achievement? Bmx dirt World champ 2005, BMX dirt Masters champ 2005-2006. DH 2nd place BDS, DH South west champ 2012. Greatest none riding achievement? Getting married, Organising Red Bull Empire of Dirt events.

We have never interviewed a World Record holder before, tell me a little bit about the impressive accolade you achieved back in 2012? It came about during a show I was doing at Goodwood, we did a height bar contest as part of the show. I ended up going real high & after we measured it it had broken the record but wasn't oďŹƒcial. Samsung approached me about doing an advert & I suggested we based it around the Guinness record, it seemed straight forward, just repeat what I had done before. Guinness imply lots of different rules it suddenly became quite hard & a very controlled situation. It all worked out & I walked away with the record!

Sunny day & no wind is all I need. Grab a bike & go, doesn't matter which, DH, All mountain, MX or BMX. Make time for hanging with the wife & drinking ales with the boys, all good.

Your background for many years has been as a top BMX rider, what prompted to focus on Downhill for 2014? I was just riding more & loving being back in competitive environment. Having support form a team meant I can really give it my all. Just loving the new challenge & learning so much. MTB is not so reliant on good weather which is nice, BMX dirt you can only really ride 4-5 months of the year if you're lucky. This season you have teamed up with the Wide Open Magazine guys, how did that come about? How is your season going so far? Been going great, having an amazing time. Had two close 2nd place finishes at Stiniog & Fort William. Didn't

[25]

have the cleanest run last weekend in Ae forest & finished 6th. The team are really easy going & it's just fun being at the races. Just need to gain bit more speed & consistency, making rookie mistakes has stopped me winning I think.

Are you a skids or a wheelie man? Skidding wheelie, that would be something. Describe your perfect day? Sunny day & no wind is all I need. Grab a bike & go, doesn't matter which, DH, All mountain, MX or BMX. Make time for the hanging with Wife & drinking ales with the boys, all good. I do this as often as I can living in Devon & having an understanding Wife helps....ha.
