MARCH/APRIL

Name? Mike Dutton Job Title? Spank Industries Brand Manager What does that mean you actually do?

Ha...its a pretty loose term isn’t it? Basically its my job to look over most aspects of Spank’s opperations, including sales, marketing, product management, and even R&D, production and shipping, to make sure that all gel together, and everything falls into place at the right time. For the most part though we have very good development and production departments, so I spend most of my time on global marketing and sales, customer service, and working with the riders on future projects and spec.

Place of residence?

I live full time in Taichung, Taiwan...Bike City! Originally from the East Coast of Canada.

Years working at Spank?

This is my forth year with Spank. 14 years here in Taiwan, formerly with a large manufacturing firm also in the bike industry.

Favourite Spank product?

I’ve been running Spank rims for about 10 years. My respect for the design, light weight and durability actually is what lead to the hook up with Gavin and Sven the cofounders of the brand. So, although we’ve got some great new product out in 2013, I have to say my favorites are the Subrosa and Spike Race28 rims... with those two sets of rims I can handle just about anything.

So, The BearClaw signature range has just been launched, can you tell us a little about that? Well, it started years ago, when we were not able to reach the tolerances, weights, and wall tapers our designs required or work with new era materials we had been researching, with traditional handlebar factories in Asia. We tried everywhere. At the same time we share a common environmental philosophy at Spank that if a more energy concious, recyclable material like alloy could be used to rival the modern trends in carbon bars, that it would be a goal of ours to produce responsible products without drawbacks or compromises. This lead Spank to open a handlebar production facility in Taiwan, close to our HQ so we could manage tight levels of control. The unique techniques, tooling, and materials implemented there opened plenty of new doors in handlebar development, and we just kept pushing the limits. This brought us models like the 290g Spike 777EVO Dh bar, and 208g Oozy Ltd Edition Trail Bar, which really changed peoples minds about how possible it was to make high performance, durable and safe alloy bars that could compete head to head with carbon alternatives. Through the development of existing models we learned that traditional views on the tapers achievable in handlebars could be overcome. Darren is quite a technically minded rider, with deep machining capability experience, so when we approached the project together and explained the technologies that we had in practice, I think he was immediately intrigued. Darren worked with us on the target properties and feel of the parts and of course the finish, and

we were able through small tooling tweeks to dial those in. The Bearclaw 777FR signature bar uses the same geometry of our legendary Spike 777EVO bar series, yet encorporates a special high strength 2-series alloy recipe we have been working with in development for some time, and a very special butting technique that allows for 7 times butting with extremely long tapers with gradual transition points, which can eliminate the stress risers normally witnessed when two different thickness points converge. This system is used in all of our Dual XGT bars, but with Darren’s model, we took it to a new level. The new 777FR is available in both 15 and 30mm rises at a 777mm length, starting at just 310g which is pretty remarkable for a bar of this strength and size. The Bearclaw Stems are based off our Spike Race Stem series, which was modified slightly with Darren’s input. They are available in both 35 and 50mm lengths, and start at just 145g. Next we dressed the bars and stems in Darren’s signature sky blue-black color scheme. Of course, we offer a black/white version of both as well, just in case blue isn’t your thing.

Spank has a history of working with great riders across the globe, this year the rider roster is looking better than ever with names such as Prokop, Berrecloth, Mik Hannah and Bernard Kerr all running Spank, there seems to have been a bit of a shift to sponsor more DH and endure riders than previously, is this intentional?

As many people will remember, Spank Industries got its start and built our initial reputation, offering the worlds top Freeriders stylish, highly weight optimized products, built to take their abuse. However over the past six years or so, where we have made the most investment and focused most of our energy, is on the introduction of light weight, competition products for All Mountain, Enduro, and Dh Race. Due to the proprietary materials, designs, and manufacturing processes Spank uses, and in-house capabilities we were afforded the ability to provide world leading strength to weight ratios at affordable prices. Also, with design coming from the gravity side down, rather than the XC side up, we feel Spank components for all disciplines still offer an element of confidence inspiring burliness, without a weight penalty. So, of course as we add to our international roster of pros, we aim to show off those products we have put so much of our selves into. I think its really important, especially with products that push traditional limits, that people know the true heros of our sport are using the same product they can pick up through Hotlines!

Is there anything special Spank dealers should keep their eyes peeled for in 2013?

For sure we expect this to be a break out year for our line of trail-enduro products, Oozy, from which we just started shipping the new stems, bars and complete wheelsets. So far testing has been off the charts, and response from media and the public has been extremely supportive. We have a few tricks up our sleeves, and are waiting on a few patents...hopefully to present some new ideas this summer at Eurobike as well. It also promises to be the best year ever for Spank supported World Cup Dh riders on the Spike line of components and wheels, so we are really excited about the coming season!

Take a quick winter ride through Cameron Zink’s local Reno trails on board his Deity CZ38 Special signature handlebar. Filmed/ Edited by Lush Cinema

Deity CZ38 Special - the Cameron Zink Signature Handlebar

The crew at Deity are proud to announce the official launch of the anticipated Cameron Zink signature handlebar, the CZ38 Special. A relationship born in 2005, Cameron Zink has faced countless adversity, injuries, surgeries, podiums, titles, championships, and a constant theme throughout all of these years has been the mutual support and loyalty between a company and a superstar. A concept that started almost two years ago, the CZ38 Special went through multiple prototypes that allowed Deity and Cameron to test various butting profiles, upsweeps, and also backsweeps. Influenced by his desire to relax the angles of his favorite handlebars, the Dirty30 and Blacklabel, the CZ38 Special’s unique “feel” comes from a half degree change in both directions. What may seem subtle can make a dramatic difference in terms of feel and the 9.5 degree backsweep and 4.5 degree upsweep give the CZ38 Special a distinctive flavor among the respected Deity handlebar line. “The CZ38 project began as we were about to launch our new butting process a year and a half ago and the technology we were playing around with allowed us to dive right into making him the best handlebar possible. Right out of the gate we were posting incredible test results, but the proof would be in how it felt under Cam. During this time, we made 3 very different prototypes that featured multiple geometry options, from slight adjustments to our butting dimensions, to new heat treatment ideas. It was an exciting time as we had redesigned all of our handlebars, expanded our potential via new tooling, and invested into researching possibilities during the heat treatment process. I am incredibly proud of the end result, but more than anything, we are honored to be able to pay tribute to Cameron Zink with his own signature handlebar model.”

Staffer of the month Andrew McIntosh Internation Sales & Tech Support

Job Title

“ There is not many jobs out there that every day involve one of your favourite pastimes. I am pretty thankful for that.”

Head of International sales

What does your job involve?

I currently oversee all of Hotlines International sales. This includes looking after our dealers and distributors worldwide and liaising with Nukeproof and Ragley on a daily basis.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Hotlines?

There is not many jobs out there that every day involve one of your favourite pastimes. I am pretty thankful for that.

What bike are you currently riding?

None, I just sold my old Nukeproof Mega. It was my only bike and it did everything.

Do you have a new one on the way? Yes, just so happens it’s a new 2013 Nukeproof Mega AM!

Favourite Hotlines product?

You might expect me to say the Nukeproof Mega but I have been super impressed by the Sun Ringle Charger Pro wheels. I have used over the last 14 months, I can’t fault them and have not had a single flat on the tubeless system.

Any riding goals for 2013?

Once I get my bike, ride every opportunity I get. I hate not having one and seeing all the guys head off riding in the evenings and weekends.
