Your Dubai Address

The city of gold is split into two distinct areas, Uptown and Downtown, each of which has its own sparkling treats for those who stay there...

Downtown Duabi

When it comes to finding your perfect address in Dubai, you first need to make one key decision: will you stay Uptown or Downtown? Downtown Dubai’s world-class attractions place you in the very thick of things - its centrepiece is without doubt the magnificent Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building (and home to the fashionable Armani Hotel Dubai, At.mosphere and At the Top, Burj Khalifa observatory), while below it the area virtually glitters with its groomed promenades, The Dubai Mall (a shopper’s paradise with 1,200 shops) and the dancing Dubai Fountain. When it comes to where to rest your head, four stylish hotels top the chart: The Address Downtown Dubai, The Address Dubai Mall and The Palace – The Old Town, plus Armani Hotel Dubai.

Uptown Duabi

Dubai’s Uptown district, meanwhile, marries skyscrapers and sea with its man-made Dubai Marina where yachts bob in the immaculate harbour. A popular destination for Dubai residents, you can make like a local by strolling around its waters, stopping off at myriad cafés (and Dubai Marina Yacht Club), heading to the nearby beach, and seeking respite from the sun in The Address Dubai Marina – a fine spot to take in afternoon tea, laze by its standout pool with light bites and, by evening, savour international fare with views across the shimmering waters and bright city lights. Once you’ve made up your mind where to stay, there’s a whole host of activities, restaurants, spas and sights at your fingertips: turn the page to find out just where to go and what to do... Then there’s the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa – make a beeline for its viewing platform and snap the city sights. The Palace – The Old Town T: +971 4 428 7888 E: info@thepalace-dubai.com

Inside look From its soaring stone archway to its palm-flanked water features and imposing pillars, arrivals here make you feel as though you’re approaching a Middle Eastern palace. Set foot inside and the palatial feel continues with charming Arabic touches (dark wood panelling, Moroccan lanterns, richly-hued furnishings). Outside, fauna-filled gardens and a cabana-flanked pool add to the illusion that you’re roaming a private royal residence. The Spa at The Palace – The Old Town really is a must-try while you’re here, not least for its indulgent treatments but also for its beautiful rooms and hammam tables. At night, you can

feast like a king in one of the hotel’s first-class eateries (see Eating Out) – try the award-winning Argentinian restaurant Asado and sink your teeth into fine cuts of South American steak.

Live it up For a stay of royal proportions, there is no grander spot than the Imperial Suite: 500 square metres decked out in luscious Arabic interiors.

The Address Montgomerie Dubai T: +971 4 390 5600 E: montgomerie@theaddress.com

Inside look For an intimate retreat that doesn’t scrimp on five-star style, The Address Montgomerie Dubai should be your first port of call: its stately white façade may look grandiose but it gives way to just 21 hotel rooms, making it the most handsome boutique spot in town. Set in the generous grounds of one of the UAE’s top golf courses, you’ll be privy to pea-green fairways and shimmering lakes. In fact, whether you’re a golfer or not, you can’t fail to admire the 18-hole Colin Montgomerie-designed championship course – and if the sight of all those greens doesn’t inspire you to tee off (though with its 81 bunkers and 14 lakes, we doubt it), the Thaithemed Angsana Spa is sure to entice you.

Live it up The Executive Suite is the ultimate space in which to relax. Its four private balconies are a real highlight – each comes with golf course views.

Before you leave… If you’re in town on Friday you’re in for a culinary treat: Nineteen hosts an à la carte brunch – a delightfully indulgent way to spend a long lunch.

And if you do want to leave the hotel, a free shuttle service will whisk you to The Dubai Mall or Jumeirah Beach Park – perfect for picnicking.

Qamardeen Hotel

T: +971 4 428 6888 E: reservationsqamardeen@southernsun.ae

Inside look The sand-hued façade and tall archways of the Qamardeen Hotel sets the tone for a classic Arabic hotel with bags of style. As well as its gorgeous boudoirs, the hotel’s outdoor pool is a real highlight with its spacious deck (a sun-worshipper’s haven) and all-day dining terrace – work up an appetite with a few lengths then tuck into delicious snacks. What’s more, the pool’s temperature-controlled water means you’re guaranteed a cool dip when the city’s heating up. Before you leave… Wander to the adjoining Dukkan Qamardeen for a shop in a traditional souk – it’s chock full of treasures and gift-buying opportunities.

Nuran Serviced Residences T: +971 4 423 8877 E: reservations@nuran.com

Inside look Nuran Serviced Residences will have you feeling right at home in no time: fully-furnished and jam-packed with creature comforts (plus a fullyequipped kitchen and washing services), there’s nothing more you could want for. Nuran Marina Residences will place you footsteps away from Dubai Marina, while Nuran Greens Serviced Residences puts you amid manicured greens that the whole family will love. Whichever location tickles your fancy, the Residences’ luxe interiors feature the finest of finishes – rooms are showhome perfect with mink and creamy latte tones, touch-me fabrics and quality appliances (you’ll be fighting for the remote of the entertainment centre) – while its leisure facilities ensure you won’t

be short on things to do. Splash in the pools, work out in the gyms, soak in the Jacuzzis and, at the Greens, shoot some hoops on the basketball court.

Stay Longer, Do More… Activities Whether you’re staying Uptown or Downtown, there’s a world of pursuits at your fingertips…

The Dubai Mall

Go sightseeing It’s for good reason that Downtown Dubai is otherwise known as the ‘Centre of Now’ – it’s home to some of city’s best bits, including one impossible-to-miss structure – you guessed it – Burj Khalifa. Take your camera to the city’s trademark man-made structure, stand at its foot, crane your neck and take in all 828 metres of its glistening façade. If you don’t suffer from vertigo there’s a way to get even closer to the architectural wonder: make a beeline for At the Top, Burj Khalifa – on the 124th floor – and, rather 12

than dangle from its heights as Tom Cruise did in Mission Impossible 4, step out on to the cylindrical tower’s observation deck. If the super-quick lift ride doesn’t impress you, the endless vistas of sand, skyscrapers and sea most certainly will. Back on ground level, the nearby Dubai Mall isn’t just home to a mindboggling array of shops, but also an other-worldly display of aquatic life: Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. Here you’ll find everything from zig-zagging tiger sharks to mammoth sting rays and all kinds of weird and wonderful fish you’re unlikely to have laid eyes on

before (the 10 million litre tank is home to more than 33,000 creatures). Children of all ages (and adults too) can stare wide-eyed at the slippery species through the viewing panel. But if you’re keen for a closer look, head to Level 2 and take a turn around Underwater Zoo where you’ll be agog at its trio of zones: visit Rainforest for furrier additions like otters and water rats (watch out for prickly piranhas, too); Rocky Shore for doe-eyed seals and penguins (a favourite with kids); and Living Ocean where the mystically-named sea dragons and moray eels swim.

Shop til you drop SEGA Republic

KidZania

Is there a better destination in the world to shop than Dubai? We don’t think so. After all, Downtown Dubai is home to the famous Dubai Mall where our only advice is to wear comfortable shoes: you’ll be strolling across 12 million square feet and perusing over 1,000 shops. If you find the prospect overwhelming, fear not: The Dubai Mall comes in cleverly-designed zones, so you can pick the one that appeals to you (and your wallet) the most. Designer brand fans will love the Fashion Avenue – a label-loaded avenue that’s home to the likes of Chloé, Oscar de la Renta, Georgio Armani and Sonia Rykiel. If it’s department stores you prefer, the mall is home to the likes of Bloomingdales, Hamleys (with thousands of toys and intermittent music and magic shows, you won’t be able to keep kids away) and a Gold Souk for the magpies among you – it’s a real-life treasure trove of jewels. If you believe all good things come in small packages, shop next at the Dubai Marina Mall in Uptown Dubai. Overlooking Dubai Marina, it’s home to a bunch of high street brands (Mango, H&M, and Reiss among them) as well as cool cafés – those with a bigger appetite should try Zafran, an Indian eatery with a water-facing terrace and modern cuisine. Kids won’t be left out here either – a little train choo-choos its way through the mall at regular intervals, so hop aboard – they’ll be grinning from ear to ear. The Address

Be a sport For fun in the sun, Uptown Dubai is the place to be – just decide whether you want to stay on dry land or take to the sea… For the former, The Address Montgomerie Dubai is a first-rate golf course in a spectacular setting. Its 18 holes stretch across 265 acres of rolling emerald greens, interrupted only by glistening water features (14 lakes in total) and the imposing hotel, which appears like a white mansion on the horizon. If it sounds picture perfect, it is. Skilled golfers will still find challenges aplenty – look out for the hand-shaped bunker on hole 17 along with a mammoth 656-yard 18th hole. Beginners, meanwhile, will be in good hands at The Academy by Troon Golf (home to a state-of-the-art swing studio) where a coach can take you through the basics and help you improve your swing and strategy. You’ll be hitting a hole-in-one in no time. If sailing is more your style, The Address Dubai Marina concierges are on hand to help you hire a vessel from the neighbouring Dubai Marina Yacht Club. Alternatively, jump on a boat that is already equipped with an experienced crew. Start the day early with a fishing trip or, for something even more leisurely, take to The Athena Dubai – a two-level boat that can accommodate dinner cruises – a wonderful way to see the city at night.

Have family fun The Dubai Mall isn’t just a shopper’s dream but a thrill-seeker’s too – and if you’re feeling the heat outside, there’s no better place to cool off than on its Olympic-sized ice rink. Get your skates on and swish round the ice – child-sized penguin models are also on hand for kids to hold on to while they find their feet. Elsewhere, computer fans young and old will love SEGA Republic. Like everything in The Dubai Mall it comes in colossal form: a 76,000 square foot theme park dedicated to all things SEGA that will have you holding on to your seats on motion-simulator rides and spin coasters – plus more arcade games than you can imagine. 14

And relax… After all that shopping and sightseeing you may crave a break. Happily, then, Downtown and Uptown Dubai are home to some truly stellar spas. You will feel the stress slip away as soon as you step inside The Address Montgomerie Dubai’s Angsana Spa. Here the heady scent of tropical flowers fills the air and its therapists come trained from Thailand (so try a Thai massage). Make your way to the 3rd floor of The Address Dubai Marina and you’ll find soothing spa rooms that look out across the water, as well as an abundance of peace-inducing treatments that both men and women will enjoy – if you’re in a pair, why not request a couple’s treatment room? Back in Downtown and The Spa at The Palace

– The Old Town is worth a visit for its décor alone – a beautiful show of Arabic style, decked out in gold accents. But it’s not just a pretty face – Oriental bath houses, hydro spa bath tubs and hammam tables make it stand out from the spa crowd. But why stop there? Head next door to The Spa at The Address Dubai Mall where holistic treatments take centre stage – plus its luxurious treatment rooms lead out to the hotel’s fantastic swimming pool. The Spa at The Address Downtown Dubai is also a must-try, not least for its varied treatments (take your pick of Thai, Balinese and Hawaiian massages) but its standout Oriental Room, the setting for Thai and Shiatsu-inspired treatments. Last but not least on our spa radar has to be Armani/SPA at the Armani Hotel Dubai – slick, cool and calm, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into the future as you pass through its metallichued corridors. Best of all, you can choose from a trio of categories depending on how you want to feel – MU for relaxation, LIBERTA for freedom and pain relief and FLUIDITA for vitality. Stay Longer, Do More… Eating out

Feeling hungry? There’s no shortage of first-rate restaurants, cool cafés and hip lounges in Up- and Downtown Dubai – here’s a look at the cream of the crop…

Hukama Ember

Middle Eastern For a taste of the region in an atmospheric setting, the Arabesque environs of The Palace – The Old Town is the way to go. Here, Ewaan serves up a seemingly endless buffet, along with live cooking stations where chefs serve up great fare on the spot. Afterwards, there are few better places to relax than Ewaan Lounge – where you can make like a local and try the fruit-flavoured shisha. Another buffet feast awaits at The Address Dubai Mall’s NA3NA3 – it’s one of the best Arabic restaurants in the city, and a favourite of Lebanese food-lovers.

it’s located by the Burj Lake, illuminated by lanterns and with a view over the dancing Dubai Fountains (if you haven’t seen them yet, make sure you do – they’re spectacular). While its spicy Thai curries are a can’t-fail choice and its Friday Yum Cha is delectable, its fresh seafood (cooked Bangkokstyle) is a real treat – all the better savoured on its al fresco terrace. If it’s Chinese you crave, Hukama at The Address Downtown Dubai serves up some of the best cuisine of its kind city-wide. The peking duck is a delight, while the more adventurous can wrap their lips around the likes of plump wasabi-coated prawns. Finally, Armani Hotel Dubai’s Armani/ Hashi takes you to Japan and back with its fresh fish, served against jet black and scarlet red décor – the sushi and sashimi will melt in your mouth.

European Carnivores and fish-lovers will love the contemporary grill option at At.mosphere, Burj Khalifa – not to mention the venue itself. The restaurant peers over the city from a height of 122 floors, making it the highest restaurant in the world. Take a pew next to its floor-to-ceiling windows and you can soak up the panorama as you sink your knife into a fine cut of meat. Another stylish city spot is The Address Dubai Mall’s Ember Grill and Lounge. Fittingly set in The Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue, its décor looks fresh from a fashion magazine while its open-plan kitchen means you can see the chef rustling up steaks and seafood. Nineteen at The Address Montgomerie Dubai takes a similar approach, with chefs on full view, and when it comes to the food

we urge you to try the rotisserie grill menu; the meats are wickedly tender. If Italy is your favoured part of the continent, where better to savour its fare than at the Armani Hotel Dubai? Armani/Ristorante exudes chic Italian style from every corner with its creamy banquettes, light gold hues and pendant lighting, while each dish is cooked in true Tuscan style. If you prefer food on the move, pay a visit to the less formal Armani/Peck – they offer delicious takeaway picnics. However, for a less formal feed you can’t go wrong with a scrumptious pizza or pasta in the modern Esca eatery in Qamardeen Hotel.
