Get dressed up, round up friends and family and get set to stomp the divots – the 2017/2018 polo season is underway in Dubai and there’s no better time to get involved in the sport. “The polo scene has matured over the past few years and we have an exciting season ahead of us,” says Tomas Iriarte, Polo Manager, Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club. Born into a family of keen polo players in his native Argentina, Tomas joined the polo destination in October, just in time for its official opening. The launch, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Haya, served to shine a spotlight on the sport. “The polo season starts in October and runs until April,” explains Tomas. “We have a
packed calendar of events, with tournaments taking place every two weeks, on average. We are hosting regional teams, such as those from Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as well as players from around the world, including the UK, Brunei, Kazakhstan, India and Monaco, so there is an international feel to the games.” At the time of speaking, Tomas was in the middle of finalising the selection of players for upcoming games. “The idea for the club is to nurture new talent – this is something Mohammed Al Habtoor, who established Al Habtoor Polo in 2000, is especially focused on,” says Tomas. “Today, he retains a vital role as patron of the team and has participated in numerous polo tournaments around the globe.”
3 polo season
Mohammed Al Habtoor is also credited with turning The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series into a highlight of the emirate’s sporting calendar, and one of the region’s most prestigious annual polo events. This year marks its ninth anniversary under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, with royalty, celebrities and other high-profile fans gathering to see the world’s best polo players compete for the coveted Gold Cup trophy. A Golden opportunity There will be eight teams taking part in the 18-goal Gold Cup Series. Star players who we can expect to see on the field this season include Argentinians Pablo Mac Donough, Alfredo Capella and Francisco Elizalde, as well as Mohammed Al Habtoor and his sons. “The events are thrilling for spectators and we have a very good commentator at the club who keeps the crowd up to speed on all the action,” says Tomas. “Once you get into polo, it can be quite addictive. From the glamorous crowd that comes to watch, to the polo ponies and the location itself – it’s a very nice lifestyle to be part of. “You can come and enjoy a picnic on the field, which is a great option for families. In-between chukkas you can meet the players and find out more about the game.” If you want to take your interest to the next level, you can embark on a stable tour or watch the resident horse walkers exercise the ponies. Active types can book lessons at the on-site Polo Academy, where an expert team of professional instructors is on hand to provide tutoring in everything from polo to dressage, show jumping and traditional riding. In addition, there are pony club activities and camps and desert riding adventures to sign up for, including an evening ride that leads you to a cosy campfire. “We welcome people of all skill levels to come and experience all we have to offer,” says Tomas. “We look forward to meeting you at the club.”

understAndinG the GAme Brush up on your polo know-how with our overview of the rules… Modern polo is played between two teams of four, on a field measuring 300 yards by 160 yards (250sqm by 133sqm), with 3-yard goal posts at either end. The winner is the team that scores the most goals. Each period, also known as a chukka, is up to 7.5 minutes long. No time-outs are allowed except for penalties, or in the event a player or horse is injured, and no substitutions are allowed unless a player has to be replaced. Each of the four players is given a position of responsibility, from the player on the offense in the front to the player on the defense, in the back. The numbers worn on the jerseys indicate that zone – number 1 is the most forward, and number 4 the most defensive. By custom, number 3 is the on-field captain, and usually the highest-rated player on the team. Typically, each player uses a different horse in each of the chukkas. If a horse appears to be tiring before the end of a chukka, the player may switch horses. Occasionally an exceptional horse will be played in two chukkas with one or more chukkas in between the rest. The control of the game rests in the hands of two mounted umpires and a referee stationed on an elevated platform at midfield.

new year ambition
The start of the new year is a time to pause and reflect on everything you’ve achieved – and all that you hope to experience in the future. Three personalities share their goals for 2018
“i’m finding a balance” international fashion artist and author, megan Hess, is putting her wellbeing first “Every year, the resolutions I choose may seem small, but I know that each one will make a marked difference to my life. For 2018, my main aim is to boost my health by cutting back on sugar and spending more time outdoors. I tend to sit for long periods in my studio working on my illustrations, so it’s important for me to find ways to disconnect. Meditating for 10 minutes a day has been helping with this and I have set myself a target to squeeze in 20 minutes a day from January onwards.
“Once I put my mind to something, I am proud to say that I am usually very good at sticking to it. It takes a good few months, however, for me to reflect on where my life is at and what I want to achieve. A lot has happened in 2017 so it is important to take stock. “The end of the year usually coincides with promoting my book (I’ve launched a new book in October for the past five years), which sends me on a whistle-stop tour of the world. We always start in Dubai, as it makes sense geographically. The emirate intrigues me and I love meeting the residents who come to my events so I can grill them on what it’s really like to live in the city. I’m only there for a short amount of time but, on my next trip, I would like to have a meal in the desert. I’m also keen to visit La Perle.
“When the clock strikes midnight, I’ll be in Bangkok with my family. I have two young children so it’s hard to say exactly what we’ll be doing. I don’t like to plan, as my intentions always go awry. If I decide to have a cosy evening in, for instance, I’ll often end up on a crazy night out. Or, if there’s a party to attend, I can be tucked up in bed by 10:30pm. As for my work, there are a number of new projects in the pipeline, including my very first children’s book, so watch this space.” Megan’s new book, Paris: Through a Fashion Eye (Dhs84), is out now. meganhess.com look after your wellbeing. 12 interviews Veronica as Queen Vee, with her band advanced creatures
“it’s time to embrace cHange” Veronica Polivkova, lead singer of advanced creatures, on following her heart. “In 2017, a phone call turned my life upside down. My friend Lukas, who works in music management, rang me out of the blue to tell me about a band in Dubai that was looking for a lead singer. At the time, I was based in my home country, Czech Republic, but was on tour with my band, travelling all over the world. Life was good, but my heart was telling me to jump in. I said ‘yes’ on a whim – the decision took around two days to sink in. I left for Dubai pretty much immediately afterwards
to join JBNagency.COM and transform myself into ‘Queen Vee’, lead singer of Advanced Creatures. We perform all around the UAE and have regular gigs, too, so it has been a real adventure. “In the middle of all the craziness, I met my future husband and we are getting married in the summer – hopefully on an island paradise like the Seychelles. After such a milestone year, I am resolving to trust my instincts and follow my heart even more. I write all my New Year resolutions down and stick them on the wall so I can see them every day. It’s a trick I use to keep the promises I made to myself. While I will mostly be wrapped up in wedding planning, I’m eager to discover more of the cultural attractions in the emirates.
“Career-wise, it can feel as if my life is one big show. The past year especially has been quite dramatic, but it feeds my soul. I am performing all the time – even on New Year’s Eve – but I wouldn’t have it any other way. “As 2018 rolls around, I want to continue to grow as an artist and musician and start working on my own material with the ultimate aim of recording an album in Dubai.” See Advanced Creatures perform at Cook Hall at The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City from 8-11pm every Wednesday and Thursday. express yourself: Sing it out at Karaoke Night every Wednesday from 9pm to midnight at Blind Dragon Dubai, blinddragondubai.com.
“i want to make a connection” w insider alexey melnikov is on a mission to build meaningful relationships “In Kazakhstan, where I’m from, New Year’s Eve is the biggest event of the year. It’s important to spend time with family, as we believe it sets the tone for how you will spend the rest of the year. People usually take up to 10 days off work to celebrate, although this year it’s my job to ensure hundreds of people are having a good time. “I took on the role of the W Insider at W Dubai - Al Habtoor City in January 2017 and it’s my responsibility to seek out the very best experiences for our guests. Over time, I have fallen in love with Dubai due to the people I’ve met along the way. I feel as if I’ve discovered its soul. “Of course, Dubai is a dynamic destination, with new venues launching on a weekly basis, and I get a kick out of seeing the craziest ideas and concepts come to life. My real passion, however, is art and design and one of the best areas to find it all is in Alserkal Avenue, which is brimming with art exhibitions, fashion stores and cosy cafés. “On a personal note, my biggest goal for 2018 is to keep on making connections. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds and find it immensely rewarding to build meaningful relationships, so I am lucky that this is what I do for a living. It takes a bold personality to be able to do that, and it’s a quality I am constantly striving to develop within myself. My wife and I joke that I am the official party starter. It’s not always easy but I seem to find a way, whether it’s getting dressed up and doing something crazy or filling a guest’s bathtub with ice and Pepsi cans as I know it’s his favourite drink. The connections I make are a vital part of my story.” Find out more about Alexey at wdubaialhabtoorcity.com/insiderdubai a meeting of minds. You can play indoors and outside at Al Habtoor Tennis Academy
Fitness rally Give your energy levels a lift, improve your fitness and expand your social circle by taking up tennis
Whether you’re inspired by the pro athletes battling it out on the international tennis circuit, are looking for a fun way to get active, or simply need an excuse to tuck into strawberries and cream, it’s time to join the rising number of people who are taking up tennis. “Tennis is an ideal sport to choose when looking to start a new activity,” says Tibor Horvath, Assistant Academy Director at Al Habtoor Tennis Academy. “The health benefits you get from playing are enormous.” Whether you’re playing a full-length match or having a friendly rally, it gets your whole body moving.
“There are impressive weight loss and toning benefits from a high intensity tennis session,” continues Tibor. “Controlling the racket is great for shaping the arms, shoulders and back, while running for the ball gives the legs a workout, and changing direction quickly develops balance and core strength. Focusing on your game is also good for your hand-eye coordination and may help to sharpen your reflexes.” Players can push themselves as hard as they like, or take a more relaxed approach depending on their goals: “Our coaches have several years of international
coaching experience and our training programmes combine top teaching techniques with physical exercises,” says Tibor. “There are even programmes, such as cardio tennis, designed especially for those wishing to focus just on the fitness element.” The social benefits are another major draw. “Not only is it good for your health, but you can become part of an environment where you are constantly learning new skills and meeting new people,” says Tibor. “We have adults joining our groups as a means to meet new friends, as well as those looking to improve their game.”
15 FITNESS The sport is suitable for a broad range of ages. Children as young as three years old can take it up while it’s gentle enough for those in their 60s and over looking to pick up a racket for the first time. “With the right coach, adults can expect to be rallying after just one lesson and, from there, developing your technique to further your game as much as you want,” says Tibor. “It’s good to commit to one session a week if you want to see improvement, but those wishing to fast track their game should aim for two or three times a week. Once your hooked on the game, it’s hard to put down the racket.” At Al Habtoor Tennis Academy, it’s possible to play year-round thanks to its indoor air-conditioned court and three outdoor tennis courts. In addition to free-play, the academy offers private and group outdoor and indoor lessons, group lessons for kids and ladies’ clinics. The courts are open to guests staying at the Al Habtoor City Hotel Collection (as well as those living in the three residential towers opening in the future). If you live locally you can consider becoming a member so you can also take advantage of the gym and café overlooking the picturesque The St. Regis Dubai Gardens.
