BjÜrk has taken over New York’s Museum of Modern Art with a mid-career retrospective. Running until June 7, the exhibition draws from more than 20 years of the artist’s daring and innovative projects. Never one to shy away from controversy, fans of the musician can watch her entire pioneering music video collection in chronological order – including the video for Alarm Call, the only music video Alexander McQueen ever directed. Housed inside a two-storey, black painted pavilion inside MoMA, the exhibition was conceived and organised by Klaus Biesenbach, the chief curator-at-large at MoMA. moma.org

14 TAKE A BOW

From its humble beginnings around the necks of 17th-century Croatian mercenaries, the bow tie has evolved to become one of the signature accessories in the modern gentleman’s wardrobe. And to celebrate the beauty of the bow, Rizzoli is publishing a new book in its honour. Illustrated by James Gulliver Hancock, the tome reveals why the bow tie is more than an accessory, but a badge of courage when folded, knotted and fastened around the necks of today’s stylish gentlemen. WEARABLE TECH Everyone’s talking about it but just how practical is it? Very, if Ralph Lauren and Aspinal of London are anything to go by. The former introduced a limited edition Ricky handbag with integrated technology back in December, with the bag making its debut in select Ralph Lauren stores in February. The ‘Ricky bag with light’ comes with an internal LED light and built-in USB charger for a smartphone. The latter, too, has tech’d up its Marylebone tote with a built-in battery charger pack. Montblanc, meanwhile, is dipping its toes into the realm of wearable tech with a smartwatch featuring a touchscreen clock face. Not to be outdone, Bulgari unveiled its new Diagono Magnesium concept watch at Baselworld earlier this year. The self-winding mechanical watch is connected to an electronic passport using WISeKey technology. I guess only time will tell if luxury and ZHDUDEOH WHFKQRORJ\ LV D QDWXUDO Ă€W

Louis Vuitton and its ceramic and pink gold Clous ring, a nod to the nails traditionally used on LV’s trunks, is also worth a mention. Ceramic has never been so dynamic.

First up, Nike has partnered with Acronym’s Johanna Schneider on its NikeLab x JFS line. Based on the wearer’s activity, the collection is about building a workout wardrobe but also making it functional for a woman’s day-to-day life. Look out for the sleeveless cape and culotte shorts. Comprising 23 items, Abe’s input is prevalent throughout the entire collection.

17 AN INTERVIEW WITH…

Francesca $PÀWKHDWURI

Interview by Lara Brunt

APRIL - JUNE 2015 | ISSUE 01

Design Director at Tiffany & Co.

“Tiffany & Co. has always been a company of great innovators and risk takers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This frame of mind links directly to the founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany, who was one of the greatest entrepreneurs and businessmen of his time, long before these terms even existed. Tiffany is now one of the most iconic American brands with a 177-year history. With such a rich heritage and design legacy, I cannot think of a more

exciting place to be as a jewellery designer. In my design process, I like to start with a dream. I love the journey of taking a bold idea and doing all the practical and technical thinking that makes a piece possible to produce beautifully. I start with a concept, something I can envision in my head and it won’t go away until I put it down on paper. I like to start with a hand drawing as I feel it gives your design a more human element and makes

DQ\WKLQJ SRVVLEOH , DOVR ÀQG JUHDW VDWLVIDFWLRQ LQ GLVWLOOLQJ DQG UHÀQLQJ a design until it is just exactly what it needs to be, nothing more, nothing less. Simplicity is often the ultimate goal. As a trained jeweller, I believe you have to be curious about your surroundings. You are exposed to so many different arts and cultures around the world so you have to have an open mind and a curious eye. You need a lot of energy, and must keep a lookout for what’s next, what’s new, what’s on

the edge. And you need to be forever excited about what’s possible. Jewellery is a great way of expressing your personality. We have always adorned ourselves and used jewellery as a sort of completion of ourselves. I believe it is art for the body and a way of making your mark in a tangible, beautiful way.” Tiffany & Co. can be found at The Avenues in Atlantis, The Palm. W

owing well-heeled travellers and Hollywood stars is something we do extremely well here at Atlantis, The Palm. Perhaps its greatest ‘wow-factor’, though, can be found in the Royal Bridge Suite. On stepping inside this one-ofa-kind suite, which spans the arch linking the hotel’s two Royal Towers, you’re instantly whisked away into a luxurious, mythical world unsurpassed in Dubai. Over the years, I’ve watched hotel design come on leaps and bounds in terms of the level of quality and attention to detail, and I don’t know about you but the first thing I do as soon as I arrive at a new hotel is explore the room (in this case, suite) to see what’s on offer. Reached by private elevator for optimum privacy, this palatial pad boasts a master en-suite bedroom, two additional en-suite bedrooms, a dining area, large reception area, majlis, library, games room and media centre. It, too, has its own guarded entrance along with a dedicated team of experts, from private butler (that’s me) and concierge to chefs. Then there is the floor-to-ceiling windows, which merely serve as expansive picture frames for capturing the stunning views across the Dubai skyline and Arabian Gulf. With enough room for six adults and three children, the Wilson and Associatesdesigned suite truly is the last word in luxury. Step outside, onto one of the suite’s spacious terraces, and you’ll find a number of al fresco areas peppered with seating options and secluded areas – perfect for soaking up the spectacular views or throwing a soirée.

Back inside and the décor is as impactful as the main entrance – think palatial grandeur on a mega scale. The soft aquatic colour palette is paired with splashes of gold, while the highceilings open up the stunning space further. Then there’s the finer details: chandeliers modelled on jellyfish, imposing columns reflective of coral reef and ceiling murals displayed like works of art. At the Royal Bridge Suite, those special moments become lifetime memories.

or those not quite so on top of alternative therapies, a quick chat with Geraldine Howard will see you right. As the co-founder of one of the leading experts in aromatherapy, Howard knows her oils from her actives, her serums from her scrubs. She doesn’t think much of the chemicals used in modern make-up. Nor does she like dishonest skincare products. She isn’t fussed about beauty trends. She is, however, passionate DERXW HVVHQWLDO RLOV 2U WR EH PRUH VSHFLÀF Aromatherapy Associates, the essential oils company she set up with Sue Beechey back in 1985. An oil for de-stressing? Naturally. A concoction for sleeping? Of course. She also takes the elderly very seriously (the De-Stress Muscle Oil reveals as much). Plus, the inspiration behind said oils deserve a whole chapter of their own. 2Q KHU QHYHU HQGLQJ TXHVW WR ÀQG WKH EHVW EOHQGV Geraldine Howard takes time out to talk business, blending and lifting herself out of a black hole.

How did you get started in the essential oils business? I was studying cosmetic science at the London College of Fashion in the 1970s and was a little disillusioned with many cosmetics when I met Micheline Arcier, a leading aromatherapist, who gave me a wonderful new perspective. I went on to work alongside Micheline learning about the properties of essential oils and was staggered by the incredible results I saw from using them, both on the quality of the skin and on the way they made people feel.

So starting your own brand was a natural next step? I met Sue (Beechey) when I worked with Micheline and we went on to set up a small treatment centre in Fulham, giving treatments and blending oils for clients, including many famous faces. Demand was so high that we had a huge waiting list for treatments and an enormous demand for oils – that was 1985 and Aromatherapy Associates was born.

Aromatherapy. What is it and how has consumer understanding evolved over the years? Aromatherapy was seen as very hippy and

‘alternative’ in the 1970s, with no awareness or understanding about what essential oils could really achieve at all. When we launched, we made it our mission to make it as easy as possible for consumers to use and understand products whilst also making the packaging luxurious enough for people to want to have in their homes.

Back in 2012 you suffered from a rare form of eye cancer. How has your personal journey impacted you professionally? All the products we have created have come from a personal need or from the needs of our clients’ or people we work closely with. I’d always wanted a clear hydrating mask that would really replenish dehydrated skin but not be heavy on the skin. So we designed the Renewing Hydrating Mask, which is perfect when travelling as no one knows you’re wearing it. I launched the Inner Strength Collection whilst going through a challenging health crisis. I was mid-way through treatment and had what I describe as a ‘black hole’ moment, which is very unlike me. I went to our oil blends and realised that we didn’t have one that was quite what I needed, so , EOHQGHG RQH VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ DQG LW KHOSHG HQRUPRXVO\

Everyone needs a mentor. Who are yours? We are proud to trace a direct line back to the very beginnings of modern aromatherapy, so Micheline Arcier, who I originally studied under; Marguerite Maury, an Austrian biochemist and skincare pioneer; and Jean Valnet, an expert in the science of essential oils.

65 GEOGRAPHY The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates – Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and its capital, Abu Dhabi. Formed on December 2, 1971, the UAE covers 83,600 square kilometres, with the desert dominating most of this area. Dubai, which has been ruled by the reigning Al Maktoum family since 1833, has an area of 3,885 square kilometres.

TRADITIONAL DRESS Emirati men usually dress in a kandora (an all-white shirt-dress and headdress) while local women opt for a shayla (an all-black cloak and headscarf). It is not uncommon to see a shayla customised with embroidery, embellishment or the odd splash of colour. GO SOCIAL Shisha is an enduring symbol of Middle Eastern culture and hugely popular in Dubai. While the apparatus looks complex, it is fairly simple to VDPSOH D PL[WXUH RI WREDFFR DQG VZHHW Ă DYRXULQJ LV burnt and, prior to being inhaled, the smoke is cooled with water. Many cafĂŠs across the city offer shisha while you dine. CONVERSATIONAL CHEAT SHEET There is a handful of key Arabic phrases that will see you through your holiday. Marhaba, hello; Sabah al-khayr, good morning; Massaa al-khayr, good evening; Minfadlak, please; Shukran, thank you; and Ma’assalama, goodbye. Most signage and tourist information is in English should your Arabic efforts fail you. GETTING AROUND The obvious choice is a Dubai Taxi, which can be pre-booked or picked up on the street. A quick glance at the taxi travel calculator on dubaitaxi.ae will tell you how much your journey will cost. The Dubai Metro and new Dubai Tram system are two other great ways to explore the city – visit dubaimetro.eu and alsufouhtram.com for maps and travel times. THE DHOW From its architecture to its cuisine, Dubai has a rich and storied past, the seeds of which were set back in the 1800s. One favourite pastime that has stood the test of time is its mode of transport: the sturdy dhow boat. Known for two distinctive features – it’s triangular sail and its stitched construction – the dhow, often referred to as an abra, is as much part of Middle Eastern history as it is a tourist attraction. ATLANTIS, THE MAGAZINE

Historical | Intimate | Authentic

So it’s no surprise that one of Dubai’s oldest settlement areas provides the base and backdrop for one the city’s most authentic art districts. Al Fahidi, previously known as Bastakiya, is a stunning cluster of wind towers, winding walkways and art galleries (some of Dubai’s oldest, actually). The residents love it because it reminds them of days gone by, while tourists like it for the ample photo opportunities and stunning architecture. Its location, too, adds to the neighbourhood’s appeal. Found on the Bur Dubai side of Dubai Creek, visitors can take a walk along the famous waterway, which cuts through the heart of Dubai, passing the many market stalls, food stops and abra stations as you go. If time is on your side, hop on board an abra (Dhs2) and cross the creek to Baniyas Road. A quick march forward will lead you to the Spice Souk, Gold Souk and various authentic bolt-holes buzzing with activity.

BUYER’S GUIDE

Michael Jeha, managing director of Christie’s Middle East, shares his top tips for purchasing art in the emirate

A is for Art: How to start a collection – what to collect and what makes an artwork collectible? All of the above sounds very simple but it can be H[WUHPHO\ LQWLPLGDWLQJ IRU D ÀUVW timer. It helps to be gregarious and not afraid to ask questions to the staff of an auction house or gallery. My recommendation is that you need to keep looking to understand what is out there and what art speaks to you. B is for Business: The business in art is complex. There are private dealers, galleries, auction houses and museums. There should be absolutely no pressure to buy anything until you are ready, at least in most reputable places. What do you look for when you are ready to buy a work of art? It is the provenance of the piece, including exhibition and publication history. The best scenario is to be able to trace the history all the way back to the artist, especially if it is an early work by a senior artist. C is for Connoisseurship: There are collectors and then there are connoisseurs – these are not interchangeable terms. While a connoisseur may be a collector, a collector is not by default a connoisseur. It can take years, even decades, to become a connoisseur in a particular category in the art world. The mantra to becoming a connoisseur is to immerse yourself deeply and WKRURXJKO\ LQ D ÀHOG &XULRVLW\ RI PLQG is key to this path of passion, expertise, DQG UHÀQHPHQW µ
