OFF TO A GOOD START The new term can be an emotional time for some parents, as their fledging’s fly the nest to start nursery. Nouhad Doughan, Managing Director at Kids Spot Nursery (kidsspotnursery. ae), shares her expert tips on making the process as smooth as possible: Bring your child along when you are touring potential nurseries as you’ll be able to see which one they prefer, and work out which one is the best fit for you as a family. Your child looks to you to gauge how they should act in an unfamiliar situation. So, when sitting in with your child on the initial visits, model desirable behaviours by engaging with the teacher and other children. When dropping off at nursery in the mornings, try to leave on a positive note with your child. You can do this by involving them in an activity or handing them to the teacher for a cuddle before slipping out the door.
A STAR IS BORN Former JESS Dubai Student, Julian Lamadrid, has been signed to Arista Records, an American Record Label owned by Sony Music. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has created a system that profiles each of the 24,471 employees working in private schools. The new Private Schools Abu Dhabi Staff System (PASS) provides parents with important details about all teaching staff, including past experience, personal experience, qualifications, and promotions. The system will also simplify the recruitment process, as once the profiles have been set up they will stay with the teacher for the rest of their career.
MENTAL HEALTH MOT
From exam stress to social media, it is no surprise that the increased pressure on teens today can take a toll on their mental health. In light of this, The LightHouse Arabia has become the first in the region to offer a mental health training course especially for ages 13-18. Dr Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director at The LightHouse Arabia says, “It is critical that teens be trained in mental health because
they are the first people that come in contact with their struggling peers yet they lack the skills to handle distressing situations, often ending up feeling stressed themselves.” Launched in the summer, the Teento-Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) aims to give teenagers the skills they need to recognise and respond to their friends' issues, including panic attacks, bullying, and depression. lighthousearabia.com

A LESSON IN TOLERANCE
Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Director General of KHDA has advised teachers to take a leaf out of their students' books when it comes to the hot topic of the year, tolerance. He said: “Every child in this world is born tolerant. So, let’s not focus on teaching our students tolerance but instead focus on learning tolerance from our students.” The KHDA has taken an active approach to the Year of Tolerance, using it as the focus topic at the What Works teachers conference earlier in the year. Speaking there, Isobel Abulhoul, CEO and Trustee of Emirates Literature Foundation said: “The embodiment of tolerance is very much in our hearts and in us as human beings. We want educators to take back this message to include everyone and ensure we treat everyone with utmost respect”.

The Arbor School’s dedicated biodomes were opened to the public during the last few weeks of summer for an eco-friendly family affair. Teachers welcomed guests to explore the 145 plant species they nurture and to see a 3D printer that uses sustainable materials, in action.

BETTER EDUCATION X DUBAI HEIGHTS ACADEMY
Choosing the right school
Selecting the perfect school for your child can sometimes feel like you’ve been unwittingly cast in the role of Goldilocks; torn between thoughts of ‘too much of this’ and ‘too little of that’. Alison Lamb, Principal of Dubai Heights Academy, shares her expert tips on getting it just right… DUBAI HEIGHTS ACADEMY
Visit the school Your gut reaction
“Your gut feeling is a good place to start”
when you walk into a school can tell you a lot. You will know if it is a positive environment from the feeling you get when talking to the teachers and looking around the facilities. It sounds simple, but it is a great place to start. A good school is far more than just its curriculum and list of resources. Most importantly, there should be a purposefully cultivated educational environment that supports the development of the whole child, not just their grades.
A fitting focus It is wise to choose a school that fits in with your lifestyle and that complements your family ideals. If you’re a sport loving family, consider choosing an institute that has an emphasis on sports. Or if a balance of academics, sport and art is
important to you, choose a school that has a broad focus, like Dubai Heights Academy.
Enriching extras
Find out how your child is going to be supported from infancy through to becoming an independent young adult; in other words, what journey will this school take them on? To get an idea of this, look at the extracurricular activities on offer, such as after school clubs, summer camps, and international school trips. Finally, living in the UAE, it is important that the school you choose puts a focus on cultural awareness and is committed to progress, in line with the vision of the country. The Education Journey From their first day of school to their last day of university, Carfax Education experts prepare students every step of the way with impartial advice and Oxbridge graduate tutors. Fiona McKenzie, Head of Carfax Education UAE shares her advice on supporting your children through the key transitions

CARFAX EDUCATION UAE X BETTER EDUCATION Moving onwards and upwards into a new school year is part of every child’s’ education journey. For some there is barely a change, but at key transition points, maybe to a new school, to an exam year group or to the final two years of school, it can be a seismic shift.
JUNIOR TO SENIOR SCHOOL Children starting Senior School (Year 7) are leaving behind a familiar environment and moving into a more independent learning style. They’ll be moving around the school for each subject, so organisation is key! Parents can help their children to develop these skills by getting them to pack their own bags and by allowing them to structure their own time. There’s quite a big leap academically, so they’ll need to settle into good study habits and keep up with the work. This can be a good time to work with a tutor, who can help embed the key building blocks of what they are learning.
SITTING GCSES
that students pick a good range of subjects that will prepare them for the next stage of their journey. Being clear about what they’re setting out to achieve can be very motivating and can help students get through the heavy workload and deal with the pressure. As well as hard work, good exam technique and revision skills can really help boost grades. Carfax tutors work with students on this, as well as with on-going subject support and intensive revision sessions in the build up to these important exams.
Year 10 starts getting serious with GCSE’s on the horizon; they are the first set of externally validated exams that start to shape the future. This is a good time to project forward and think about the best range of subjects to take that will keep the right options open in the future. Taking a Carfax student profiling assessment can be a useful tool at this stage to see which subjects are important for future plans. As most teachers will tell you, success at GCSE level is down to sheer hard work and application, so this is the time to be focused. The results will be worth it!

Picking the right course for University can be quite overwhelming; in the UK alone, there are over 36,000 courses at 300 plus universities. At Carfax Education, we work very closely with students to help them identify their best fit; we mentor students to find the most suitable degrees at the best universities and help them build a competitive profile. Studying something you are good at and that you enjoy is a good start towards getting a good degree. Making a good choice here is key to unlocking the next stage of the education journey.

PASTORAL CARE
HANDLE WITH CARE
With global reports showing that teenage stress, anxiety and depression are at an all-time high, there has never been a more pressing need for emotional and mental support in schools. Enter, the pastoral care teams – members of staff who are dedicated to creating the right environment for your child to thrive
G
one are the days when choosing a school was all about the grades. In 2019, many parents and students are prioritising their child’s enjoyment of their education too. It’s not just, “How well will my child do at this school?” But also, “How happy will my child be here?” And with good reason. A number of recent large-scale polls from around the world have shown that student stress has never been higher. The National Education Association in the US talks about an “epidemic of anxiety amongst students”, while a survey of 38,000 students in the UK concluded that an “urgent call to action” had been sounded, due to the “alarmingly high” levels of anxiety, loneliness, substance misuse and thoughts of self-harm. Similar findings have been reported in India, Australia and elsewhere. And students here in the UAE are not immune to this trend. Why are teens today more stressed than they were in previous years? The journal Pastoral Care in Education says that part of the issue stems from the fact that “schools are urged to compete in a politically and ideologically driven
‘race to the top’”, with students being “the casualties of such activities”. However, we know it’s not just the pressure to achieve that is stressing our children out. Social pressure has been made worse by the fact that social media and smart phones have broken down the barriers between inside the home and outside the home. There is less downtime for young people. Social media is 24 hours. Teenagers on a school bus today are more likely to have both ears plugged up with headphones, sitting in a world of their own, than they are to be interacting and communicating with their peers. The differences between the world we grew up in and the world our children are growing up in are too varied and too numerous to count. As such, while pastoral care has always been an element of a school’s foundations, these days there is definitely more need — perhaps vital — for this type of support. As parents, we can do our best to help our children thrive. But, with the best will in the world, many of our children’s most difficult and stressful
19
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME? Barry Cooper, deputy head at Brighton College, tells us how parents can create an environment of positive emotional and mental health at home
“Greater wellbeing enhances learning, which is the traditional goal of education” issues will pass us by without us even noticing. This is where the importance of a well-structured, effective pastoral care strategy will make all the difference to our child’s happiness, wellbeing and, ultimately, their grades.
What is pastoral care? The word ‘pastoral’ originally means to give spiritual guidance. In the context of a school environment, that meaning has been widened to include all forms of care and support that encourage better emotional, mental and physical health for students and teachers. It’s not fluffy; pastoral care is about a lot more than just morning mindfulness exercises and access to a school counsellor. It’s about yearround campaigns, activations that engage the entire school, policies on homework, how balanced a student’s school day is, monitoring the fine line
20
between encouragement and pressure, specifically-trained staff (and in some schools, students) that are equipped with skills to help recognise emotional and mental issues as they develop (and diffuse them) and much more. At Brighton College Dubai, pastoral care is delivered through the house system, whereby tutor groups of approximately eight students work on various elements of wellbeing throughout the year under the guidance of a head of pastoral care, housemasters and mistresses and a school counsellor who, not only sees pupils one-on-one, but also trains the staff in emotional and mental support strategies. Barry Cooper, deputy head, says, “At Brighton College Dubai, pastoral care is evident, not just in the support we offer our students, but also in the clearly defined boundaries of what they can and can’t do, as well as firm
“The biggest issue with all children in secondary school is self-confidence — even when they appear to be confident. In Dubai, children can put on a good show of confidence and selfesteem. But, in my experience, all 14-year-olds are the same in the sense that they compare themselves to each other. “When it comes to parents supporting their children through the tough emotions of adolescence, it’s all about time — meaning how much of your time you give to your child and in what way. The more you can sit and talk to your kids about what they are doing — in and out of school, what they are thinking about — the better. “It’s also very important to communicate with the school about any worries or concerns you have about your child. Problems arise when the parents are sitting at home thinking that the school is the bad guy, or vice versa. I always appreciate when a parent comes into the school and says, ‘We have an issue. How do we deal with it?’ “I liken it to being the support team of an Olympic athlete. The child is the athlete and we — the school and the parents — are everything else. The coach, the nutritionist, the physiotherapist… Everyone needs to be talking to each other so we can help that athlete to be the best they can."
PASTORAL CARE expectations in terms of behaviour — especially towards each other. We believe that a lack of these clear-cut boundaries and expectations creates uncertainty, anxiety, discipline problems and general unhappiness in children. “Our approach is that every member of staff, during the course of their day, can have a positive impact on how pupils see themselves. A culture of kindness is something we try to model for the whole school community.” At Dubai English Speaking School, primary students had three days of fun classroom-based activities in their first term that were based around awareness of positive mental health, while secondary students at Dubai English Speaking College (DESC) engage in year-round activities through the GROW team, which stands for “Getting Ready for the Outside World”. Through GROW, DESC students explore relevant issues, such as self-harm; drugs/smoking/alcohol awareness; bullying; how to seek help when you need it; how to help your friends and lots more. They have bi-annual ‘wellbeing weeks’ with yoga, mindfulness exercises and more, as well as regular workshops and talks by local experts on topics such as resilience. At Nord Anglia International School Dubai, a group of teachers and students received formal training in how to be a good listener from a Dubai-based mental health professional, so that they could help support their peers and fellow students as a first line of defense against emotional and mental issues. At Jumeirah Primary School, pastoral care is threaded through the daily structure of learning in the form of specific classes and activities, where students learn about how to recognise the things that make them happy, becoming aware of different emotions, being aware of other people’s emotions, bullying and more. For the younger children, colouring pages and work sheets helped children to identify their own feelings, while after-school clubs
such as ‘Being the Best Me’ enabled them to take that awareness to the next level and access positive feelings.
The benefit of self-belief As adults, we can recognise and appreciate the positive impact these types of activities and strategies might have on our children. After all, how does your work environment impact your ability to achieve your potential in any given task? How does your mood affect your ability to retain and retrieve information, to feel motivated and to achieve goals? Martin Seligman, an eminent professor in positive psychology and the author of many books on the topic, says, “Greater wellbeing enhances learning, which is the traditional goal of education. Positive mood produces positive attention, more creative thinking and more holistic thinking. This is in contrast to negative mood, which produces
narrower attention, more critical thinking and more analytical thinking.” He adds that a bad mood makes people of all ages “fall back defensively on what they already know and follow orders well, rather than demonstrate creative thinking and learn new things”. He concludes, “wellbeing should be taught in school because it's an antidote to the runaway incidence of depression, a way to increase life satisfaction and an aid to better learning and creativity” — all of which is as necessary to career and life success (if not more so) as exams. Just because the world is being taken over by robots, it doesn’t mean we should be raising our children to become them. In effect, we have 18 years to help our children become well-educated, well-rounded, loving, laughing adults; emotional and mental wellbeing is paramount if we are to achieve that goal.

HOW TO RAISE A HAPPY CHILD Hummingbird Early Learning Centre experts share their tips
A
s parents, there’s no greater pleasure than seeing our children beaming from ear to ear. We all want our children to be happy and to lead successful lives, but what can we do to ensure we are taking a proactive approach to their mental wellbeing? The professionals at Hummingbird share their practical advice for fostering a positive
22
environment that your child will thrive in.
Look after you, too In the same way that laughter is contagious, being happy is infectious, especially for children who mimick behaviour. Your mood directly affects theirs, so don’t feel selfish for taking that hour-long bubble bath if it helps you keep your zen. Hummingbird
advises parents to, “focus on your own needs, that way you’ll be working towards the wellbeing of yourself and in turn, your entire family."
Friendships matter Researchers* have discovered that building strong relationships as a child is an important factor in mental wellbeing throughout life. Hummingbird say, “Parents can
BETTER EDUCATION X HUMMINGBIRD EARLY LEARNING CENTRE foster good relationships by providing safe opportunities for children to explore and form friendships." It’s as easy as taking your child to family gettogethers or organising play dates that give them a safe space for making connections.
Celebrate the good times One way to create happy memories with your family is by celebrating all things big and small. “Create rituals or family traditions that put a smile on their face, it could be the end of a week, someone’s first word or last day at nursery and there’s no need to spend lots. Keep it simple by taking a walk outside, singing your child’s favourite songs, or organising an outing to mark the occasion,” says Hummingbird.
In her book Raising Happiness, Christine Carter stresses the importance of family mealtimes stating that children who
“Create rituals or family traditions that put a smile on their face”
regularly sit down to eat with their families get better grades and are more emotionally stable. At the dinner table you can pose questions that get the kids ref lecting and practicing gratitude, such as ‘what was the best part of your day today?’
All ears “Communicating clearly and thoughtfully with your child makes them feel happy, loved and listened to,” says Hummingbird. Creating this connection builds your child’s self-esteem and will mean they are more likely to confide in you." Hummingbird suggests, "dedicate some time every day to give your child some undivided attention.” To learn more about Hummingbird Early Learning Centre visit hummingbird.ae

STEAM
CREATIVITY IS KEY With the latest approach to education seeing the arts taking their place amongst the subject heavyweights, we ask Dubai schools how this is impacting their students
I
t’s welcome news for most parents — the arts are officially being given the same weight (and respect) as the traditionally respected subjects, maths and science. And it’s not just lip service; STEAM, which sees the arts being added to the previous acronym STEM (which stands for science, technology, engineering and maths), has taken over as the flag schools want to be seen to be waving. Although perhaps new to the general public, in the education world, it’s a movement that has been gathering speed and followers for a good few years now. Back in June 2006, Sir Ken Robinson delivered his perception-altering TED Talk, ‘Do schools kill creativity?’ — which, with nearly 60 million views, is TED’s most viewed talk of all time. In that talk, the author, education expert and creativity supporter said, “All kids have tremendous talents, and we squander them, pretty ruthlessly. So, I want to talk about education, and I want to talk about creativity. My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” Later in his talk, Robinson pointed to the changing tides in education and the workforce, which have devalued standard university degrees and concluded that, “the whole structure of education is shifting beneath our feet. We need to radically rethink our view on intelligence.”
Creative intelligence In recent years, many studies have proven the link between creativity and high achievers in all fields. Interestingly, a study from Michigan State University found that an extremely high percentage of Nobel laureates in sciences are engaged in arts. In fact, they are 25 times more likely to sing, dance or act than other scientists, 17 times more likely to be an artist, 12 times more likely to write poetry and literature, eight times more likely to be involved in woodwork or another craft, four times more likely to be a musician and twice as likely to be a photographer. Researchers also found that many of them integrate their chosen art with their scientific creativity in some way. There is no doubt about it, STEAM is here — and here to stay. Janecke Aarnaes, head of Dwight School Dubai, says, “At Dwight, we don’t discriminate against subjects. We believe that subjects should have equal value. We aren’t only preparing engineers and scientists for work — we are creating people who can go out into the world and create something on their own. In the past, teaching was just about opening doors to future education. Now it’s about asking the question, ‘What triggers this child? What makes them passionate?’ “It’s about having a holistic approach. If a child feels they can
25
STEAM
thrive at school in the area that they are passionate about, all of their subjects will benefit. Traditionally, maths and science departments had a special position in schools. But more and more we are seeing that there shouldn’t be a hierarchy. Different kids have different skills and different passions. We know that if we can nurture a child’s passion in school, it gives that student a greater purpose for being there. Time and time again we see children responding positively to this approach. By giving them support in the area that they have a special interest in, they do better in other subjects too.” Bill Delbrugge, school director at Dunecrest American School, agrees. “STEAM learning is at the forefront of educators’ minds today. Successful graduates of tomorrow are going to depend on their abilities to innovate, create, communicate and collaborate, reaching across disciplines with multiple careers in a single lifetime. And it’s not just about adding some more art lessons to the weekly schedule, says Delbrugge. It’s about
26
encouraging creativity in terms of thinking and problem-solving. “Through STEAM, students develop ownership and responsibility for their education as they face many time management and decisionmaking challenges. Students will become effective at teamwork, flexible thinking, creative problem solving and learn the importance of collaboration.”
“Graduates will depend on their abilities to innovate, create and collaborate successfully"
A brave new world Futurists predict that, in order to succeed, this generation of children will need creative problem-solving capabilities and flexibility, rather than simply vast knowledge. Schools are thoroughly aware of this and ready for the new challenge. Dunecrest’s Delbrugge says, “With a shift to a knowledge-based economy and the rapid pace of scientific and technological innovation that pervades every part of our world, STEAM education helps students gain fluency in the skills of the future. Bringing these core subjects alive with real world applications helps keep children engaged in their learning outcomes. It allows them to take a question that is compelling in their world, or in their lives, and have many tools to help them answer it.” Barry Cooper, deputy head at Brighton College, says, “We work on a concept of enabling skills and concepts into tools to create something exciting. How to measure, how to cut, how to behave in a lab, how to conjugate a French verb… without creativity and
STEAM the willingness to put yourself out there by trying to create something new, education is just learning by rote. At Brighton College, we believe that we need to give our students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed along with the creativity to be able to use it. “The obsession with grades gets good exam results, but will they have the resilience and flexibility they need to succeed in the world of the future? In the next 25 years, kids will need to be able to communicate scientifically, culturally, emotionally, socially… and be able to translate their skills into the working world when they enter it. “Last academic year, we asked parents to come in and tell the students about their career journey. We did this to show students that their own career path is likely to be circuitous." The IB curriculum has arguably been leading the way with STEAM for many years now by allowing students to maintain a wide range of subjects all the way through their school career. Aarnaes from Dwight School Dubai says that this is one of the main USPs for IB. “IB offers a holistic approach to all subject areas and keeps their importance throughout the entire school cycle. In this way, STEAM permeates the entire IB framework all the way through to graduation. Languages, art in all its forms — performing, visual, filmmaking, music, science, maths… all of it is present throughout a student’s time at school. “What does a 13 or 14-year-old know about what work they want to do when they are 25? We don’t know what the job market will be in the future. But we do know that the chances of them having multiple careers is high. It’s important students learn skills that will help them evolve with the times and changes in machinery, so they can handle changes and shifts in industries.”
28
STEAM IN ACTION So how does this actually appear in your child’s school day? We asked two schools for specific examples of how STEAM is brought to life for their students Dunecrest American School: Bill Delbrugge, school director, says, “At Dunecrest, our teachers are always collaborating to create cross-curricular projects where various subjects link into each other. We incorporate STEAM projects that are relevant and allow students to attempt to solve real world problems. From robotics, coding and drones to sustainability principles and growing food, our students are learning about finding solutions to world issues. Our STEAM programme requires students to be active and engaged. The approach is very handson in nature. Students are frequently called upon to gather supplies, construct models and test designs.” Brighton College Dubai Barry Cooper, deputy head, says, “At Brighton College, we believe that creativity is not just something you are
born with; we believe it can be taught and nurtured. “Every single thing we use has been designed by someone and, as such, we have a strong focus on design. Last year we ran Design Week, which incorporated a number of different aspects within the school, including creativity. “We also had Art Week. For this, we borrowed artwork from esteemed local artists and ran workshops for parents and students, such as enameling as part of a jewellery-making process. Participants had the chance to bend metals into shapes and fill them with liquid glass… activities like this have different stages and processes which are scientific, while still being creative. For example, learning about the different boiling temperatures of different materials, how to use heat to bend metal and using tools. “Another workshop saw parents mimic what was being taught to our year eight classes., producing work that involved measuring, precision, angles… and of course, creativity.”

Teaching for the future
Fairgreen International School on fostering innovation for tomorrow's workplaces
W
Why is teaching innovation key to preparing young people for future workplaces?
ith algorithms and machines being predicted to replace many occupations, it is important that schools move with the times. Director of Fairgreen International School, Mr. Graeme Scott, tells us more about their hands-on approach to technology and innovation‌
How does Fairgreen integrate technology into education? We take a balanced approach to technology by preparing our students for the interconnected world they are living in, but also emphasise the importance of disconnection from devices and reconnection with nature. We practice mindfulness, which allows kids to separate from technology and to live in the moment. Currently we use technology for
urban farming, solar energy, and sustainable construction. Plus, from September we will run a programme called Design, Engineer, Construct, which will use industry-standard software to teach students the practical skills for design and construction applications.
We are now living in an age where many occupations are dying out while new jobs are being created just as quickly, meaning it can be challenging to prepare students for these future occupations. The adults of the future will be expected to learn new skills in previously unknown contexts and to be able to change direction constantly. We teach our students with a design thinking process whereby they can use their research skills and generate ideas. We know that forward-thinking is key, so we emphasise the role of innovation. Your insider-guide on constructing a top-notch university application
T
he new school term is an important time for students to start thinking about applying to university. Not only for those making applications this term, but also for younger students to start building up their applications. Sophie Oakes, Education Consultant at Gabbitas Middle East, shares her top tips and answers to some of the most common questions about applying to UK universities.
in the next stage of their educational journey. One of the tools we find very valuable in this situation, is our online Student Profiling Assessment. Not only does it recommend a range of possible degree programmes and universities based on your interests and strengths, but also possible career routes.
1 WHEN SHOULD I START THINKING ABOUT APPLYING TO UNIVERSITY?
There are so many factors to consider when choosing where you want to study. It’s very important to understand the type of university you will be studying at. From location to facilities, each campus is different in its own way, but all these differing factors must essentially align with your course choice. At Gabbitas, we will offer you detailed advice on which university matches your preferences and expectations but most importantly, your course. Your chosen course should always be your number one priority. Make sure you choose something that interests you but also something you can see a future in. Once you have a longlist of the right courses, you can start thinking about other factors like location, campus, the halls… etc. Remember, through UCAS you can only apply to 5 universities so make sure you have an aspirational and a backup option.
At Gabbitas, we like to start working with students as early as possible to help them build a strong application. One of the most important factors we highlight is to make post-16 choices as early as the age 15. It's also imperative to start looking at summer courses right after the GCSEs. For the most competitive applications, such as Oxbridge or Medical subjects, early planning is essential to ensure you have the best chance possible.
2 HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT COURSE? With over 50,000 degrees offered at 360 higher education institutions, choosing where and what to study in the UK can be overwhelming. For many students the sheer number of choices can be terrifying due to the pressure of making the ‘right’ choice
3 WITH SO MUCH CHOICE, HOW DO I PICK JUST 5 UNIVERSITIES?
4 HOW CAN I WRITE THE BEST PERSONAL STATEMENT? With only 47 lines and 4,000 characters, knowing how to sell yourself in your personal statement can be a major dilemma for students. Use specific examples of when and where you’ve demonstrated strong capabilities to showcase why you are suitable for this course. At Gabbitas, we can help you construct the most suitable and targeted personal statement based on your strengths and interests. Gabbitas has nearly 150 years of helping students within education. University admissions to the UK is becoming increasingly competitive and we are best placed to help you at this key stage of your educational journey. FEET ON THE GROUND
With schools bringing global issues to life in the classroom in the form of problem-solving skills and creative thinking exercises, we look at the benefits of opening children’s eyes to the world’s weightiest problems and the positive impact of keeping kids grounded
WORDS BY: LOUISA KIERNANDER
C
hildren growing up in the UAE live a privileged life. Private schools, swimming pools at every turn, five-star hotels and malls, high standards of sanitation everywhere, an absence of obvious poverty… It’s a stable, affluent and safe place to raise children. A place which keeps those precious little minds protected from the harsh realities of life. However, there is a downside to this homogenised experience of the world. When affluence is the norm, it’s hard for children to have an appreciation of
32
their privileged existence. That’s not their fault — they aren’t ungrateful, just unaware. How can they be expected to understand how well off they have it when they haven’t experienced anything different? How can they be expected to have empathy when they never come face-to-face with people who have less?
Caring to succeed This detachment from other people’s struggles doesn’t do our children any favours when it comes to their career trajectory and success later in life. A
study from Duke and Penn State, which followed more than 750 people for 20 years, found that children who were able to share and show kindness to their classmates in their earliest years at school were more likely to graduate and get jobs. Whereas those children who didn’t show those caring skills were more likely to drop out of school, require government assistance, or end up in juvenile disciplinary centres. At the University of Toronto, psychology professor and author Tina Malti researched school-based
KEEPING KIDS GROUNDED
“We've recognised that empathy must be viewed as essential as maths and literacy” interventions to promote empathy in children and found that it is never too late to learn how to empathise. She says, “It’s not just children… If you only focus on academic outcomes, or work outcomes, you are going to miss the whole being of a person. It needs to be balanced in a healthy and meaningful way.” Additionally, Ashoka, an international network of social entrepreneurs, is investing a lot of time and money into finding out how to cultivate empathy in education. This project came off the back of a study of the entrepreneurs within the network, which found that a strong sense of empathy was a common factor amongst them. In fact, in more specific detail, most of the entrepreneurs could identify a key determining experience before the age of 20 that had triggered a strong desire to create change in society. Autumn Williams, a spokesperson for Ashoka, said of the entrepreneurs, “We’ve recognised empathy as integral to their change-making. That’s why empathy must be as essential as maths and literacy. We need a world full of individuals that have the ability to cultivate change where it’s needed, and to recognise that they have the ability to do so.” She continues by saying that their study shows that empathy plays a crucial role in creating positive change and solving deep-rooted social and systemic issues.
Reality check So, how can we ensure our children are getting the experiences needed in order to have a grounded perspective on life
and, therefore, empathy for their fellow citizens of the planet? Back in 2011, Dubai-based father and entrepreneur Vahid Fotuhi launched Fathers and Kids Camping (FAKC) — an initiative, as the name suggests, with the goal of getting fathers out into the great outdoors with their children for fun, adventurous bonding experiences from which much more is gleaned. Once a year, FAKC followers have the chance to take part in a community project. In this way, FAKC is not just about grounding children by taking them out of the comfort zone of their home and putting them in a tent, but also in the sense of opening their eyes to the plight of others. “We often hear that Dubai is a bubble,” says Fotuhi. “Whilst it’s a harsh generalisation, there is nevertheless some truth to it. For one, we never see poverty in Dubai. Yet in almost every society, poverty is part of the fabric. Exposing our children to this reality helps them appreciate what they have, helps them to be grateful and also helps them to learn about the importance of sharing with those who are less privileged. This is one of the core pillars of Fathers And Kids Camping. Every year we organise an event which focuses on this — the events range from volunteering at a kitchen to prepare meals for low-wage workers in Dubai, to building a school for orphans in Zambia.” At Arcadia Prepatory School, in Dubai, students are made aware of global issues in the context of problemsolving. Graham Beale, principal at the school, says, “At Arcadia Education, our focus is on nurturing the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs,
FAMILY VALUES Liam Cullinan, head of secondary at Nord Anglia International School Dubai, shares three important values that keep their students’ moral compasses pointing in the right direction “At Nord Anglia International School Dubai, we believe that the responsibility for ensuring our students are grounded is a partnership between parents, extended family, schools and all other adults who are role models to the children. “Within the school environment, there are many key values that we focus on. The first is good old fashioned manners; it is key that manners are a normality for children. This mutual respect should be modelled by everyone. “The second is kindness and empathy. In our recent KHDA inspection, our children were described as ‘kind’. By students engaging with kind acts across a range of environments, whether that’s through volunteering, through school trips or random acts of kindness, they get a deeper understanding of the positive impact they have and how their privilege can improve the lives of others. “The final value is failure. At NAS Dubai, we believe that it’s important students are allowed to fail. This is often something that parents tend to block as parental instinct is to always see challenges before they affect your child in order to protect them from that pain. But we have all had to fail — it teaches us so many things, including choice, consequences, the appreciation of learning and self-Improvement.”
33
artists and athletes through a holistic approach to education, which is only possible when children are presented with opportunities to interact with the world around them in a wholesome manner. “In a world that is as dynamic as the one our children face, it is vital to ensure that they are able to prioritise what is important in order to reach their goals.” Beale explains that, even when faced with distractions and choices, if children are “in a grounded atmosphere, they will be able to flourish and exceed expectations — be it with regards to their grades, or futurefocused initiatives.” At Arcadia, this approach results in specific programmes which enable children to face perplexing problems and to come up with potential solutions. “We place a strong emphasis on exposure towards as many additional programmes as we can incorporate into the learning environment,” says Beale, “in addition to honing a sense of selfpreservation and entrepreneurship. We
34
believe that such exposure gives rise to students with a sound understanding of how the world around them works and positive ways in which to interact with this. One of our ongoing partnerships is with Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership. Their programme prioritises the development of four key traits that comprise the entrepreneurial mindset: opportunity seeking, creative problem solving, resiliency and resourcefulness. Through such opportunities, we find that students are inculcated with a mature mindset, making it easier for them to absorb valuable information.”
Big thinking Similarly, at Horizon English School, global issues get brought to life in class in order to trigger creative thinking. Headteacher Ian Wallace says, “In today’s society, it is important that children can understand how they can be successful — not just for personal gain but for the benefit of others, also.
"Education is a tool that can and must be applied to situations where children can use their knowledge effectively and collaboratively to try and solve real world problems.” According to Wallace, knowledge and good grades are not enough to ensure success in the work place of the future; our children will need to have experience of being able to creatively apply knowledge and skills to large scale, pressing issues. “Being able to apply skills so that they benefit global issues, or find solutions to medical problems, is how children can really determine their success. In this way, students will be empowered to appreciate how their education, knowledge and understanding has the potential to make an impact, not just to them personally, but to others too.” Because of this, rather than teaching subjects in separate silos, schools are now guiding their students to be able to bring knowledge and skills from different subjects together to solve a problem. Wallace says, “Students will bridge the subjects together to enable their problem-solving, collaboration,
KEEPING KIDS GROUNDED communication and emotional intelligence. But in order to really excel, the ability to apply these skills to a real-life context that benefits others will enable real mastery in these transferable skills.” By bringing global issues to life in this way, schools can help children to truly expand their minds — not just by teaching them new subjects and skills, but by removing the
blinkers and limitations of their own life experience and broadening their perspective of where their future may take them, while giving them belief in their own ability to bring about important changes and have a positive effect on the planet and people’s lives. Fotuhi from FAKC says, “I think it’s very important to expose our children to the many facets that encompass our world. It's
a fact that children can get lost in their own worlds and forget about the many realities that exist beyond their communities. Opening their eyes to various cultures, customs, cuisines and languages around them helps them appreciate just how rich this planet is and, in my experience, certainly tickles their curiosity to explore further and learn much more.” slice of true accomplishment is something money cannot buy.”
WHAT’S MY ROLE AS A PARENT?
We ask the experts for tips on how you can help keep your child grounded and globally aware
Vahid Fothui, founder and chief camper at Fathers and Kids Camping (FAKC): “The best thing we can do as parents is to expose our children to various cultures and social classes so that they can learn about what people go through. For example, the children that came with us to Zambia learned what a privilege it is to have access to drinking water. Our kids would never believe this when living in Dubai, or other developed communities, unless they go to these emerging markets and experience it first-hand. “In Zambia, our group was treated to a wonderful dance and theatrical show by the local children. Everyone loved it. For us parents, that was the end of it.
But for our kids, those songs and dances remained with them and, that same night, they organised their very own talent show, singing songs, performing impromptu dance routines and acting out plays. It was wonderful! “At the end of the Zambia trip, my son Cyrus said, ‘This made me realise how lucky I am to have things like parents, a bed, shoes…’ I could tell he had really changed. Since then he complains less about material things. He knows how fortunate he is. “Additionally, many children who came on the trip made presentations in front of their schools to spread the word about their great deeds in Zambia. They were very proud of what they had achieved and the lives they had impacted. This
Graham Beale, principal at Arcadia Preparatory School: “There are many things that parents can do to help keep their children remain grounded and aware. Bring current issues into your child’s everyday environment by discussing hot topics, such as sustainability and technology, and then encouraging your child to incorporate this into their daily life. “Another positive way to promote a grounded mindset is to work alongside children to aid a local charity initiative. Large scale events are not necessary but, in committing time and effort to good causes, children will be able to appreciate their lifestyle as well as use their resources and capabilities to better the lives and situations of others. It is also a positive approach to instilling entrepreneurship skills within their minds and attitudes from a young age. “In line with Arcadia’s aim of raising the next generation of entrepreneurs with a global mindset and a desire to make the world a better place, one of our top recommendations would be to listen to relevant podcasts or watch documentaries, which can be excellent sources of information, For example, KiDNuz is an insightful podcast that provides child-appropriate news on a daily basis. The five-minute-long podcast offers an engaging way to teach your child about what goes on in the world around them, setting the tone for an aware young adult.”

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EDUCATION Whether you’re new to the UAE, have just had a baby, or are looking to switch schools, you’ll be eager to get up to date with everything you need to know to choose the right nursery or school for your child
36
ESSENTIALS
P
re-primary curricula start at age three (your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31 July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools or 31 December for other curricula) in the UAE, while compulsory education begins from Grade 1 (approximately age six, depending on your child’s birth date and the curriculum they will study). Dubai is booming. There are currently 209 private schools in Dubai (176 of which were inspected in 2018-2019) offering 17 different curricula, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools in the emirate. Over 90 percent of Dubai students study in private schools. As a result, places are hard to come by in the most sought-after schools and can be a challenge to find at short notice in some year groups, particularly the Foundation and Reception ages, between four and six. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, private schools operate across three regions — Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra — catering to around 200,000 students. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is responsible for managing, guiding, adopting and implementing various educational development strategies and initiatives in the region, with its Irtiqa’a inspection system measuring quality and supporting improvements so that all schools in the capital adhere to international standards. Your child’s school placement may be organised through the company you work for, but if not, it’s wise to shortlist several schools so you have options should you not gain a place at your top choice. Be sure to research the assessment and admission criteria for the schools you shortlist, as well as the requirements for fees and payment schedules.
EARLY YEARS Currently, more than 120 early
childhood education centres are registered in Dubai, according to KHDA. Here, the authority highlights factors to consider when selecting a nursery:
Curriculum and approach to learning What kind of curriculum or learning approach does the centre follow? Whatever the approach, there should be clear learning and development outcomes for your child along with mechanisms for the teacher to report on your child’s progress on a regular basis. Depending on your first language, you will want to ask about the languages used in the centre. For example, will your child be given the opportunity to interact with adults speaking good Arabic and good English? Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn. Some centres also enhance their curriculum with in-house programmes or visits by outside organisations.
Quality of provision It is important to inquire about and, if possible, observe the teaching and learning. In general, are the teachers friendly, caring and qualified to provide care and nurturing for your child and do they make you feel welcome in the centre and answer your questions openly and fully? Ask about the nationality and qualifications of the staff and about the staff-to-child ratio — how many children will be under the care of each adult?
PARENT-SCHOOL CONTRACT Upon enrolling in a school, you will be required to sign a Parent-School contract at the start of the school year, which ensures that both schools and parents are aware of their duties and responsibilities towards each other and towards their children. The terms and conditions stipulated in the contract will also be a reference for dispute resolution. However, if your child is continuing at the same school, you will not be required to sign the ParentSchool contract annually. Your contract with the school will continue to remain valid while your child is enrolled at the same school. A new contract shall be issued and signed by the parent only if your child’s school is changed.
The environment The Ministry of Social Affairs sets out a number of safety regulations, which early childhood education centres must follow. In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the presence of a centre nurse, the number of staff who
37
38
ESSENTIALS are qualified in first aid and the safety and security measures taken by the centre. Ask about the measures taken to ensure a clean environment and to prevent cross-contamination. You will also want to check that there are secure procedures to stop unauthorised people entering the building and for the drop-off and pick-up of children by authorised adults only.
STARTING SCHOOL With compulsory education starting from Grade 1, the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, which run from April to March. There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Here are the factors to consider when choosing a school:
Curriculum The curriculum is much more than the textbooks or examinations — it refers to everything the school teaches, including subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom. These include extracurricular activities, school trips, and visitors to the school. Different curricula also adopt different approaches to learning. All curricula lead to public examinations and qualifications. These will be important considerations in your choice of curriculum for your child — you may need to think about the requirements of any future application to university or further education, either in the UAE or abroad. In addition, if you are
coming from abroad, your selection of a curriculum may depend upon your country of origin as you may want your child to integrate back into your home country’s education system at some time in the future.
Quality of education The learning outcomes and performance of schools will be important to you in making your decision. The Dubai School Inspections Bureau’s (DSIB’s) annual inspection reports allow you to look at these and other aspects of schools in detail (visit khda.gov.ae for individual inspection reports).
School environment Your child will be spending a lot of time in school and all aspects of the school have an impact on your child’s social development and personality. As part of the decision-making process, try to arrange a tour of the school, talk with administrators, teachers and students and see the school in action. Areas you should talk about include how the school is structured, whether classes are mixed and/or whether classes are streamed for ability, how transport is arranged, and the arrangements for lunch and breaks. You can also find out the school policies on examinations, assessment, discipline, dealing with bullying, communications with parents, and technology integration, to name just a few. For more information on choosing and enrolling in education in Dubai, visit khda.gov.ae and for more details on education in Abu Dhabi, visit adek.abudhabi.ae
SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN ABU DHABI Irtiqa’a inspection system of ADEK employs a team that includes specialists with expertise in the school’s given curriculum or curricula. Inspections in private and government schools in Abu Dhabi take place once within a twoyear cycle, using the six-level scale, with Band A including levels Good to Outstanding; Band B covering Acceptable; and B and C including Weak and Very Weak ratings.
SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN DUBAI The Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) of KHDA provides comprehensive information on the standard of private school education in Dubai, which helps to inform improvement planning at school and policy level. This is achieved through a number of approaches, including annual school inspections, parents meetings and focus groups, teachers, parents and students surveys. The inspection results, which are released in February or March for Indian and Pakistani schools and in April for all other schools, is based on a six-level scale, as follows: OUTSTANDING – quality of performance substantially exceeds the expectation of the UAE; VERY GOOD – quality of performance exceeds the expectation of the UAE; GOOD – quality of performance meets the expectation of the UAE; ACCEPTABLE – quality of performance meets the minimum level of quality required in the UAE; WEAK – quality of performance is below the expectation in the UAE; VERY WEAK – quality of performance is significantly below the expectation in the UAE. Inspectors assess quality of education at a variety of levels so the rankings are a great resource to use when considering schools.
