Szandra Akkach, founder and CEO of Elite Babies & Tots shares the story so far…

Founded several years ago, Elite Babies & Tots is now the leading baby care company in the region. We send babycare assistants to client’s homes to care for newborns, babies and toddlers, at any time of the day or night. All our babycare assistants are trained in paediatric first aid from Highfield and hold degrees in midwifery or a Bachelor of Science in nursing. It’s the ideal solution for working mothers and those who wish to get a good night’s sleep.

Before opening the company, I completed my Bachelors degree in hospitality management and specialised in sales and marketing at Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland, which enabled me to understand the fundamentals of branding and creating my own business from the

initial stages. I also studied luxury brand management at ESMOD and took courses with the London College of Fashion in brand management and design. I also gained work experience in guest relations at Hotel Arts Barcelona, which enabled me to gain a better understanding of dealing with customers and client relationship management.

Babycare is a very delicate business, and there is a specific niche in the market for it with the numerous expats and locals in Dubai who are willing to book a qualified professional to care for their newborns in their absence – especially first-time mothers. Stay at home mothers often require an extra pair of hands as well, and some simply require the service throughout the night so they can sleep well knowing their little ones are in trusted hands. We are happy to be able to provide a much-needed service to parents who need it most.

I know first-hand that truly exceptional service is what attracts and maintains clients. No matter what strategies you use to put your business out into the market, in the end it all comes down to whether or not your clients receive good treatment and a memorable, personalised experience that builds trust and leaves a positive impression.

Want to open your own business? Believe in your ideas and back them up with research and facts. Do your homework, analyse the market and competitors, position yourself in the right way and don’t allow anyone to make you doubt your potential. ABU DHABI NURSERIES UPDATE The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is reaching out to parents to help ensure their children are enrolled in a licensed nursery. “All 244 nurseries in Abu Dhabi have been instructed to display their nursery license in the reception area, visible to the eye for parents to see. Additionally, nurseries must renew

4

their license on a yearly basis. They must start the process at least two months prior to the expiry date of their license,” said Dr. Sara Al Suwaidi, ADEK’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) Licensing Director. Nurseries in the emirate are now required to comply with ADEK’s academic health and safety and overall licensing requirements, with an

emphasis on child’s safety, hygiene, and overall level of early education. “We look forward to hearing that all preschoolers are prepared to move onto the next level of schooling, and this can only be done through a safe, secure, well-rounded licensed nursery that has qualified staff and a wellestablished curriculum,” summarised Dr. Al Suwaidi.

In a nutshell, ecoliteracy is the cultivation of curiosity about the places in which we live – the act of paying attention to the living and non-living things around you for the lessons they can impart, explained the Arbor School in Dubai. As a practice, ecoliteracy urges us to examine the interconnectedness of life on Earth. In action, it empowers students to think critically and imaginatively about the challenges we are facing and to apply their knowledge and skills to create real change in their communities. As a consequence, ecoliterate children (and adults) move through the world with a sense of connection to the nature, people and places around them. They know how to use their knowledge, wisdom and love for people and the world to take action to create sustainable solutions for this generation, and those that are yet to come. To learn more about the Arbor School and its focus on ecoliteracy, contact the admissions team at 04 581 4100 or email admissions@ thearborschool.ae. Tours run at 11am on Sun, Tue and Thu and 9am on Mon and Wed. The Arbor School is an ecological school based on the National Curriculum for England located in Al Furjan.

Research shows that exposure to nature improves children’s cognitive development, reasoning, and observational skills. For a fun dose of nature-based education, families and schools can organise a field trip to Aventura in Dubai. Its Nature Walk programme introduces kids to a variety of local flora and fauna and, through games and sensory activities, students will expand their understanding of the natural world around them. A special focus is given to the Ghaf tree and aspects of its adaptability to desert life. (The park closes on 30 June for the summer). +971 52 1787 616, aventuraparks.com

KHDA SETS NEW SCHOOL FEE FRAMEWORK

Concerned about rising school fees? The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has introduced a new school fee framework that’s set to make education more affordable by limiting school fee increases across Dubai’s private schools. “The fees framework takes into account the cost of living and financial expectations of families in Dubai,” said Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of KHDA. “These measures will ensure almost 90 percent of all students enrolled in Dubai’s private schools will no longer face fee increases above the set Education Cost Index (ECI).” Only schools improving in the annual school inspection ratings by Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) will be eligible for fee increases above the set ECI. According to KHDA estimates, average fee increase will be lowered by 35% in comparison to the provisions allowed under the previous fee framework.

WELLBEING

SCHOOL LUNCH HEROES Make sure your little ones are getting the fuel they need to succeed with our handy guide to giving them healthy, delicious lunches on the regular

T

he power of a nutritious diet is clear to see, especially when it comes to our children. A whopping 84% of students are more likely to be satisfied with life if they eat fruits and vegetables, according to the latest Dubai Student Wellbeing Census by KHDA (published in February 2019). While it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that eating well has a positive knock on effect on many areas of life, getting little ones on the right track can be a challenge at the best of times. Here, we look at some and practical ways to help make sure they’re covered…

LUNCHBOX GOALS We all try our best when it comes to lunchboxes but finding the inspiration (and the time) to curate a perfectly balanced bento box is enough to send even the most organised parent into a tizz. Fret not, however, as it’s easier than you may think to whip up a rainbow lunch. Dubai-based Karey Richard, a parent of two (aged 5 and 3), has carved a niche for herself when it comes to making nutritious, colourful and fun lunches, which she shares via her Instagram page Lunch for Your Littles (@lunchforyourlittles). “When my first baby little started nursery, I knew I wanted him to eat as healthily as possible with lots of variety, so I bought a lunch box from PlanetBox that had a few different

compartments in it so he would have a good selection each day,” she says. “As time went on, the lunches got a bit more creative, with various shapes and colours, and my blog evolved from there. “My number one rule is making sure the kids have everything they need for a well-balanced lunch,” she continues. “I will always have one item from each food group and will put three different types of vegetables in the box, as a minimum, to give them choice and variety. Also, cutting at least one or two things into different shapes entices them to eat it as it’s different and fun, which grabs their attention.” Lots of colour is equally important when it comes to inspiring little tummies, as is strategic placing. “If you are struggling to get your kids to eat their lunch, be sure to always include one item they love. This way, they will be more inclined to try any new foods that surround it. You could play a game to introduce one new food a week and, if they try it, you can reward them with something after school, like a special activity together.

I also recommend getting your kids involved in the kitchen: ask them what they would like to see in their lunch box. Get them baking with you and helping you, as when they see what they have made in their lunch, they will be much more inclined to eat it.” If you’re already thinking you haven’t got time for this, a little planning can go a long way. “When I don’t have a proper meal plan I tend to reach for the quick fixes rather than the healthy ones. Saturdays are generally when I will sit down and plan out my week. I make a list of lunches and dinners and one or two things I want to bake for the kids. I pre-cut my fruits, vegetables, cheese, boil eggs, roast chicken – anything that will hold for a few days in the fridge and then pack it the night before. All I need to do in the morning is add the fresh ingredients so I’ve time to enjoy my morning coffee and have breakfast with the kids.” Being organised will also help you stick within your budget. “Don’t go shopping without a plan,” says Karey. “Also, try to plan dinners that

“A variety of shapes and lots of colour is important when it comes to inspiring little tummies” 9

will leave you with leftovers for your lunches or things that freeze. Batch cooking and baking is great, load up your freezer with foods you can take out and use easily by defrosting overnight and all you have to do is put it in the lunchbox. All of this should help you stay within your means and give your kids a fun lunch they will love.”

MEALS ON WHEELS If you need a helping hand, there are a number of companies who can do the leg work for you. One such enterprise is Chubby Cheeks Organics (chubbycheeks.ae), which offers a meal delivery service for weaning babies and toddlers (from 12 months to 3 years), working closely with a paediatric dietician, Jordana Smith from Infinity Clinic in Dubai, to create nutritionally balanced menus. The company can also deliver individual meals direct to your child’s nursery upon request.

10

CHUBBY CHEEKS ORGANICS

WELLBEING “It’s important that every child’s meal is healthy and balanced: breakfast and dinner are just as important as lunch,” says the company’s founder Hiba Van Dyk. “Children are constantly growing and it’s so important to provide the right fuel for this growth. The right balance of vegetables, protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats is integral to the nutritional needs of children. When you encourage healthy eating habits from the start of their lives it also helps them carry it on into adulthood, and for generations to come.” In the toddler range, you’ll find lasagna packed with hidden vegetables, butternut squash pasta, apple pancakes and cocoa date balls, and much more. But what can you do if your little one turns his or her nose up? “It’s absolutely normal for kids to go through a fussy eating phase,” says Hiba. “Our advice is persistence. Try and try again. Some children need time to acquire or re-acquire a taste. For picky eaters, our paediatric dietician advises consistently showing them the food they aren’t liking and exposing them to it, but in small portions. For example, if they don’t like peas, put two or three peas on their dinner plate each night. The idea is that if they keep seeing it, they will eventually try it. It’s important to note that if they are really not eating anything it’s best to consult a paediatric dietician.” Finding a way to get your brood excited about the prospect of fruits and veg can work wonders. “My son loves hearing songs about fruits and vegetables,” says Hiba. “It actually gets him excited when he then eats the different items that he has heard songs about. He also loves shapes and colours, so when introducing new fruits or vegetables we talk about what colour it is and what shape it looks like. So far, it seems to be working quite well for me.”

KAREY’S TOP TIPS Get a lunchbox with lots of compartments. This way, you can see exactly what they are getting nutrition wise, and your kids won’t be bored. There are some available now that have the food group written on the bottom of each compartment as a guide to what to include. Run with a theme. Themed lunches created around festivities and key dates such as Halloween and St Patrick’s Day, have been a huge hit with my kids. I try to make them a bit more of a surprise for them by adding notes, stickers,

funny eyes and anything that will give them little chuckle or smile. Keep it fun. I have been pretty lucky when it comes to my kids’ eating habits, but I have always explained to them that there are “sometimes” foods that they can have occasionally, as well as food they always need to eat to stay healthy and strong. We also let them have a “yes day” when they try things they can’t normally have. I don’t want them to be deprived of anything and learning everything in moderation is extremely important.

GET SCHOOL FEE SAVVY

You can't put a price on a good education... or can you? We speak to a selection of the UAE's leading education providers about the rise of more affordable schooling options, and how to find the very best fit for your child, and your budget

WORDS BY: LOUISA KIERNANDER . *SOURCE: HSBC, VALUE OF EDUCATION 2017: HIGHER AND HIGHER, UAE ANNUAL REPORT

A

cross the emirates, many parents are struggling with the high cost of education. It comes as no surprise considering we're paying more than double the global average for our children's education, according to an HSBC study*. Consequently, many families have been forced to make tough choices, with some opting to home school, others sending their children back to their home country for their education and those who consider it a key influencing factor in their decision to pack up and leave entirely. In June 2018, the KHDA announced a freeze on school fees, forbidding schools from increasing their prices for the academic year of 2018 to 2019. More recently, the announcement has come that schools will be allowed to increase their fees by up to four percent, depending on the rating received in the most recent school inspection. And so it begins again: families, who are already juggling the increasing cost of living, stagnating incomes and more, may again be facing larger invoices from schools this September. But before you hit the panic button, take a closer look. In the UAE, we are lucky enough to have a vast number of schools catering to various religions,

12

languages, educational syllabuses – and price brackets. So if you're worried about affordability, and want to give your child the very best education for your budget, the good news is that you do have options.

Shopping around “There has been a rise in the number of parents who are looking at various options available across different price points and offerings to understand the full value for money that they are getting," says Matthew Burfield, Principal of the GEMS Founders School. "GEMS Education commits to quality education across all of its schools, without compromise due to lower fees in what are considered to be ‘affordable’ schools." GEMS Founders School, Dubai opened in September 2016 and now GEMS Founders School, Al Mizhar, which opened this year, have offered an affordable price point for a National Curriculum for England International School. Offering GEMS standards at a cheaper price? According to Mr Burfield, the lower cost is down to two main factors. “The first is that Founders Schools don’t have a swimming pool or an auditorium. The second is that the staffing model is more international in its

mix of UK and non-UK trained teachers. We ensure that, in our international schools, we maintain the standard that all staff are fully qualified, KHDA approved and English-language tested.” If your children are still small, making regular savings will offer you the luxury of choice when the time comes, but selecting the right school is about more than just a number. “Parents have to be wiser now," says Mr Amol Vaidya, Senior Director of Operations at Global

VALUE EDUCATION

Indian International School, UAE. “If education is a priority for you, you need to look around at the culture of the schools. The culture of learning should be everywhere, starting at the main reception. I can have a swanky building, but what if I don’t have the right people who have an idea of how your child will use his education in 10 years’ time? Many parents focus only on academics. But we don’t send our children to school to become orators. Our children shouldn’t

have the same learning experiences we had. They need different learning experiences so that they are prepared for the world.”

Compromise and prioritise Managing the balance sheets for large institutions, such as schools, is no easy matter. Choices need to be made about what they will compromise on and what they won’t. Mr Vaidya says, “We don’t compromise on guidance. Although we are at the lower end of the

price scale for our price bracket, we invest in an academic consultancy company that services schools in higher price brackets. For us, that is a priority. “We also prioritise learning spaces, laboratories for all ages, photography laboratories and a high level of technology, AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics learning.” He continues: “All of our students have 90 minutes of robotics on their timetable each week. This is important to us as

“US$99,378 is the average amount UAE parents spend on their child’s primary, secondary and tertiary education*” we know if we don’t put it on the timetable, some children won’t do it. The percentage of girls taking science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education worldwide is only 23 percent, which is too low. It’s important for us that girls are taking up these subjects.”

Speak up If you are struggling with fees, your first port of call should be speaking to your school. “We do our best to help every family experiencing financial difficulties, no matter what the cause," says Aparna Verma, CEO and Founder of Scholars International Group (Dubai Scholars, Scholars International Academy and Clarion School), which consistently rank in the upper strata of the country’s schools in terms of exam results, with 90 percent of their IGCSE students achieving an A*, A or B across all subjects. “We meet with parents one on one to find

a solution. The last thing we want is for a child to experience an education upheaval, possibly leaving their parents in Dubai to go to school in their home country.” Similarly, Mr Amol says that he speaks to parents individually to help them find a solution. “Ten percent of our students are on scholarships, or receive awards. We always try to support families that are struggling as we want to encourage positive growth in children. But there is only so much I can do in terms of finance – it’s a costly place to run a business… I have to hold on to good teachers and give them a raise… and that all comes at a cost. “I advise parents to look at what schools you can afford in your price bracket and look at what other outgoing payments you can compromise on. I also suggest looking at proximity and perhaps living closer to the school so there is less time and money spent on travel for your children. Don’t just go by name or go by price, as it won’t always deliver the learning experience your child needs. Your objective should be to prepare your child for life. There are options available – you, as parents, just need to be open to them.”

“68% of UAE parents are funding their child’s education from day-today income*” 16

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A SCHOOL? Mr Amol Vaidya, Senior Director of Operations at Global Indian International School, UAE “Your child needs three things from his or her education: to know how the world works, in terms of physics and biology and maths and science; to be abreast of technology and future technology for their job prospects once they leave school; and to be a good global citizen. Look for a balance of all three of these things. Also, the culture of learning should be throughout the school. What is the ambience like? How are your queries handled? Learning shouldn’t just happen in the classroom… look for evidence of learning in the hallways and the empty spaces. Your child should be acquiring skills and knowledge they can use, not just in childhood, but in adulthood too.” Matthew Burfield, Principal of GEMS Founders School “Three things parents should ask any school they visit are: what measures are in place to ensure my child is safe and happy at this school?; what do you do to help my child make

progress in the curriculum knowledge they need?; and how do you communicate all of this to us parents? "The most important aspect in supporting individual needs is to develop a relationship of trust with the school. If parents trust that the school always has their child at the centre of their thoughts, even the hard conversations and difficult decisions can be overcome together. Parents also need to ensure that they remain in their vital role as parents and don’t become their child’s teacher. It's important not to blur the lines.” Aparna Verma, CEO and Founder of Scholars International Group “Parents should look for quality and ethos in the school as they visit. They should meet and interact with students. They need to get a feel for the soul of the school. The work they see displayed in classrooms and around the school will reflect volumes about the academic depth of the school. And finally, parents should see pride in student work, student achievement and an overall pride in the school when they visit.”

REWARDING ROLE MODELS

WORDS BY: CLAIRE MALCOLM

Got a little genius on your hands? Schools across the UAE are shining a light on scholarships in order to target top talent and support community goals

19

I

f you're a parent of a bright spark, the possibility of him or her being awarded a school scholarship may well be on the brain. As well as nurturing their unique abilities, a scholarship also brings welcome financial relief. And the good news is that there are some fantastic scholarship programmes to check out in the Emirates. With 49 schools in the UAE, GEMS Education has an expansive scholarship programme in place. Christophe Savard, Vice President, Student Career & Future Employment Architect, says: “We believe that anyone in the education market should recognise merit and are always looking for ways to give back and see not only the genius in every child, but also make quality education accessible to those who have talent and deserve recognition.” The not-for-profit Jebel Ali School launched its scholarship programme in 2017/18 with a dual focus, as Peter Hill, Principal, explains: “We are one of only a small handful of schools that operate on a not-for-profit ethos and this was a gesture designed to reach out to the community. “The programme was launched to support high performing existing students that may require some help to stay at the school and to encourage new students to join.” In 2017/18, GEMS Education awarded scholarships to 100 students at 16 of its schools with fee discounts ranging from 25 percent through to full scholarships, while Jebel Ali School currently offers 10 scholarships to secondary pupils with fee discounts of up to 50 percent.

MAKING THE GRADE Many schools adopt a similar approach when it comes to eligibility. GEMS Education, for example, offers academic places to students who have consistently placed at the top of their class in all subjects for at least the last three years from Year 7, or

20

placed in the 95th percentile for those who sat international exams. In addition, the programme also offers scholarship programmes for Creative and Performing Arts, Sports, Innovation and Digital Technology and Arabic Studies, and requires proof of similarly exemplary performance in each discipline. Jebel Ali School scholarships are either academic or academic and sports based, with creative arts talent also up for inclusion. Hill elaborates: “Applicants must have a strong academic record alongside significant sporting ability or with a specific skill set in the creative arts but there absolutely has to be a backbone of academic excellence throughout.” He also stresses that, for interested parents, the understanding of what constitutes exceptional performance needs to be clear from the outset. “What I would emphasise to parents is that if their child is doing ‘slightly above’ the average then this isn’t really what we are looking for, standout applicants are those who are performing significantly above what is required from a normal 12 to 15 year old.” Prospective candidates are required to fill out

an application form tailored to the specific scholarship programme they are applying for and this isn’t a mum or dad responsibility. Says Hill: “The students themselves fill it out and need to talk about their achievements, motivation and goals, as well as providing school reports and other relevant information.” Shortlisted applicants then sit a maths and English test after which successful candidates undergo a final interview with Hill and the school’s head of secondary. GEMS Education applications are reviewed by a Scholarship Committee made up of representatives from the specific school awarding the scholarship, and from the GEMS Education School Support Centre. “In-person interviews may also be required to demonstrate a candidate’s ability in areas such as Performing Arts and Sports,” adds Savard.

SUPPORTING THE JOURNEY Unlike renewing your car or medical insurance every year, the majority of awarded scholarships cover the secondary education journey without the requirement to

STUDENT VOICE Deborah Jaqulina, Grade 10, GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, Performing Arts Scholarship “It was both an honour and a privilege to be awarded a scholarship. I am very humbled to be chosen among a highly talented group of students and so proud that the school has recognised my achievements. It has made me strive harder to achieve more in both my academic studies and artistic pursuits, and I always

remind myself that I am now a role model to my friends and fellow students. I am so grateful for all the opportunities that have come with it and, to date, I have received a Certificate of Academic Progress and was also chosen to play the part of Wendy in our upcoming school production of Peter Pan. I assist Miss Tickner, our Head of Drama, and Miss Williams, our Head of Music, with teaching and coaching the younger cast members with their choreography.”

SEND reapply each new academic year. “Recognition of a talent inspires and motivates the student in question, which is key to helping them stay focused as they progress in their education journey. Our scholarships are renewable, which means we want to continuously recognise and facilitate talent while also rewarding up-and-coming students. We see the number of scholarships growing on an annual basis,” says Savard. Adds Hill: “We want our scholarship students to be great ambassadors for the school, to enjoy the experience and be fully involved. We don’t want them to get stressed so as long as their effort grades don’t slip significantly, even if they have a temporary dip in one or more of their subjects, it’s not the end of the world. These scholarships are valid for their entire experience at Jebel Ali School, so as long as the effort grades are maintained and they participate fully.”

A NOTE ON BURSARIES Scholarships aren’t the only option for those in need of financial aid. Brighton College Al Ain, one of just four Abu Dhabi schools to be rated as Outstanding by ADEK, has moved away from the scholarship model and is instead offering bursaries as a way to show its commitment to making premium private education affordable. “The bursary scheme offers more generous support to families with smaller incomes and is not limited to pupils who show exceptional talent – any child who meets the entrance requirements can apply,” says Dr Ken Greig, Headmaster. Brighton College bursaries are means tested and awarded in the form of a discount of anywhere between 15-50 percent of tuition fees (depending on individual financial circumstances) – something well worth investigating.

WELLBEING

LIGHTENING THE LOAD

Exam stress is no joke. Panic attacks, anxiety, depression and exhaustion are all symptoms that your child may be struggling with the pressure of achieving specific grades. We speak to experts on how it feels for your child, and how you can help them

E

xam season is upon us. Cue, parents rolling their eyes and conspiratorially bonding over the shared experience of dealing with their test-stressed child. However, the reality is no joking matter; it is certainly not something that should be taken lightly. Last year, when the new format GCSEs (which could see students taking up to 28 exams over three weeks), were taken for the first time, teachers and students across the UK were in uproar about the intense pressure the exams were causing. Teachers reported high numbers of anxiety, depression, panic attacks and other mental health issues, any one of which is not only hugely upsetting for a child to have to experience, but also impairs their ability to perform and achieve. Many education experts spoke out saying that students were under more pressure than ever before with over 80 percent of teachers saying that they felt their students were more stressed than in previous years. The UK’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) said recently that the number students being referred by their schools for mental health therapy has risen by a third in the past three years.

Similarly, over the last academic year, 2017 to 2018, Childline, a free mental health support service for children in the UK, reported increases in the number of children calling because of exam stress. Interestingly, 50 percent of these were young people aged 12 to 15, with their most common concerns being an overwhelming workload, pressure from parents and anxiety about getting the right grades. According to Childline’s reports, these children were already suffering with depression, anxiety and selfharming tendencies. Barry Copper, Deputy Head of Brighton College Dubai, which offers primary and middle years education up to Year 9, says that one of the problems is putting too much importance on to specific

exams. “There’s no pressure like the pressure you put on yourself,” he says. “Our pupils are citizens of the world and will have well developed ideas about who they are and where they want to go with their lives. Often, they can see, wrongly, exams as a make or break moment on their personal journeys.”

High pressure environments A US-based study looking at stress in school-age children and young adults, found that, while there is undoubtedly a level of stress that is ‘healthy’, many students fall into chronic levels of stress that impede their ability to perform and succeed while putting them at risk of mental health issues and risk behaviour, such as self-harming. The study, carried out by researchers from the New York University College of Nursing

26

“Children are under pressure to make the most of their education” (NYUCN), surveyed students from private schools and from state schools, noting the differences between them, making the findings particularly relevant for parents in the UAE, where most children are in private education. A senior researcher on the study said, “School, homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, repeat – that’s what it can be for

some of these students… We are concerned that students in these selective, high pressure high schools can get burned out before they even reach college.” She continued by saying that the high tuition fees and affluent background of the families resulted in “a unique set of pressures, expectations, norms and resources.” A teacher surveyed for the study commented, “Parents are coming in and thinking, ‘I’m spending a lot of money and I need to get something, a very tangible something. A great education is not a tangible something; a diploma from Harvard, Princeton or Yale… that’s tangible.’” A sentiment echoed by many parents in the UAE, where the cost of schooling can be high and children are commonly put under pressure to ‘make the most’ of their expensive education. While they undoubtedly should take advantage of their

WELLBEING schools resources, is this just another heavy thought for them – another source of pressure for our children to beat themselves with?

School support Luckily, most schools in Dubai are aware of the impact of stress on a child’s wellbeing and ability to succeed, and, subsequently, they have strategies in place to prevent it. The KHDA has taken a proactive stance on wellbeing over the past couple of years, encouraging schools to create safe and supportive environments, where children can grow academically, socially and personally, rather than being high-pressured and grade-obsessed hothouses focused only on academic success. Schools are responding to this campaign with passion and creativity, creating exciting and unique strategies to promote wellbeing. Mindfulness, yoga, counselling and empowerment exercises are the norm across more schools now – a shift which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on students’ mental health and therefore their grades. Brighton College’s Mr Cooper says that having a healthy perspective on exams and being well organised can help to combat stress. “We start as young as possible by getting the boys and girls used to the idea of exams as being a part of their education, not the end of it. I’m fond of telling them about my own failures and the lessons I learned from those mistakes. We also believe in preparing children for the process of exams – this means being organised, learning revision techniques and tactics and mental preparation throughout their schooling.” At Nord Anglia School Dubai, wellbeing is high on the agenda. Graeme Malcolm, Assistant Headteacher, heads up the school’s wellbeing efforts and says that, as the stressful exam period gets closer, they are ramping up their

activities to build resilience. “We run workshops for parents and for students, assemblies, tutor time activities and programmes, such as mindfulness and yoga, and more. We are just about to have our first ever student-led Wellbeing Week, that will involve a number of initiatives – the overall aim is to promote a positive sense of mental and physical wellbeing to the entire school community. We also have a team of students in year 12 who have been trained and certified in active listening – they are a source of support to other students who might be dealing with stress or anxiety.”

Know when to step in The question is not whether students are stressed, because we know they are. The question is what can we, as parents, do about it? Firstly, recognise the signs. Sadly, the first signs of stress are often mistaken for bad behaviour, or typical teenage rebellion. Arguing, resistance, mood changes, apathy, lack of motivation, low energy levels, becoming absorbed in social life, or isolating themselves can all be signs that your child is feeling overwhelmed with stress. In addition, if your child is engaging more in selfcomfort behaviours, such as gaming, food, or even exercise, it could also be a warning flag showing that your child is struggling. Unfortunately, rather than being recognised as symptoms of emotional and mental health issues and responded to with support, therapy and kindness, these behaviours are often vilified and punished by parents and schools – which only furthers the negative thoughts, the feelings of being unsupported and disengagement. The NYUCN study identified three main types of healthy coping strategies for students: sports and exercise; spending time planning and being organised; and maintaining

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF THE TESTS Comedy nights Laughter really is the best medicine – plan family movie nights, featuring light-hearted, funny films, to help your child relax and release some of the stress hormones. Encourage breaks Just because you don’t like computer games, it doesn’t mean they are always bad for your child. Taking brain breaks from studying is important for concentration levels and stress. If your child uses computer games to relax, allow them to in a managed and controlled way, without judgement. Watch your words Avoid placing added pressure on your child by talking about specific grades, even if they have been predicted them. Make sure your words are encouraging and positive, not increasing pressure and negative. Make health easy Exercise and activities that they enjoy, healthy food that they like – anything that makes it easier for your child to be physically healthy during this time will help them to be mentally and emotionally healthy too and help them be more resilient to stress. Spread the love If you focus your talk and attention on grades and schooling, you are subtly telling your child that this is the most important thing about them. When talking about your child to someone else when your child is in earshot, make sure you talk about more than just schooling and grades and achievements, giving them praise and attention for other things about their personality, such as being caring at home, spending time with their friends, hobbies and other interests.

a balanced perspective on grades. Some of the activities they recognised as being helpful for students to balance out stress included listening to music, playing video/computer games, meditating and getting away from school. On the flip side, the study found that the two most common unhealthy stress responses were emotional exhaustion (described as lethargy, the lack of will or motivation to do anything, overwhelming tiredness and feelings of paralysis), and substance abuse, which two thirds of students surveyed said was part of their stress management. While school-based support and empathy is undoubtedly important, cultivating a caring, supportive environment at home is of utmost importance. Mr Malcolm from Nord Anglia School Dubai says, “When

28

there is a successful partnership between student, school and home, exam stress can be manageable. But all parties need to be taking part. Parents need to be proactive rather than reactive when supporting children during exam time. Exam stress is real and parents should be sensitive to what their children are experiencing.” He continues, “I can’t emphasise enough the importance of fundamentals like sleep, diet and exercise. Failure to take care of the basics can definitely lead to more deep-rooted emotional issues. A recent study in the US suggests that there was a 30 percent rise in the number of students visiting counselling centres between 2009 and 2015, with that figure continuing to rise. Dubai is experiencing something similar.”

“Positive relationships can counter the effects of stress” Remove the stigma Another issue facing students is the social stigma of getting help. Studies show that parents are more concerned about social judgement and the stigma of getting professional help for stress than the students themselves, with many parents worrying that their child will be labelled if they need professional help to cope with what they perceive to be ‘normal school stress’.

WELLBEING Unfortunately, although coming from a place of love and protection, these concerns are more of a hindrance than a help to a child who is stressed. Professional therapy and support can offer your child a safe place to talk about their fears and worries without the risk of it descending into a family dispute or argument. Additionally, a therapist can help your child develop better coping strategies, while empowering them with a sense of perspective and calm, all of which can help to lower the levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, flowing around their body. Another way you can help ease your child’s stress levels is by making sure your home environment is calm and stable. A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research in the US found that students that have stress at home are more likely to crumble under any added stress from exams. The study reported that warm, positive relationships at home and at school can help slow down, or counteract, the effects of cortisol. This supportive environment at home is really where we as parents can make the biggest difference. Mr Cooper, from Brighton College, says, “The stress is very real for the children and no matter how hard we try, there are some who will suffer. The best advice I can give to parents is to see education as a journey through the forest. There is no one right path. Some of the paths are well trodden, some are brackish and difficult to traverse, some are those that you have to make for yourself. Make sure your children see that there is always more than one way to their objective, more than one chance to get things right, more than one path through their personal forest. No child should ever feel an exam is a turning point in their life; because the truth is, it never will be.”

EXPERT ADVICE ON EXAM STRESS Anna Yates, psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist and owner of Mind Solutions shares tips for helping your child through the exam period What are the signs of stress? “If your child or teenager starts to behave differently in any negative way more than usual, that is a signal that something is bothering them. Typical reactions to stress, which is linked to fear, would be a change in eating habits, unusual tiredness or difficulty sleeping, opting out of normal activities and becoming withdrawn, extreme emotional outbursts (more than those caused by normal adolescent hormone challenges), unexplained crying or mood swings. Alternatively, they could just refuse to study, be in denial about the fact that exams are fast approaching, procrastinating… These are all signs of a fear of failure.” Being stressed about exams is normal. How can we know when this has tipped over into something more problematic? “If as a caring and understanding parent, you have tried to reassure them that they are only expected to do their best and that what they are feeling and experiencing is very natural, but these attempts to

help them get back on track are not working, then it needs to be looked into in more depth as clearly they are not coping.” What are your top tips for parents to help their kids with stress? “Look out for the early signs of stress before it becomes a major issue. Talk to them well in advance of the exams. Take them away from the situation so that you can assess them away from the triggers. Be patient. Remember, you haven’t failed as a parent – many children go through this at least once in their lives and how you handle it will set the scene for their future. Don’t be afraid to share how you felt when you were young, if you can offer experiences of similar feelings of stress and being overwhelmed. “We sometimes forget that our children do not have the adult resources we do and that, what may seem insignificant to you, may be an enormous issue to their immature and inexperienced mind. Sadly, life is full of exams, challenges and testing situations, and it’s our job as parents to reassure our children that it is ok to make mistakes and to fail – as long as they learn from it. They need to know that making mistakes is part of life and that those experiences make us stronger in the future.”

HERE COMES THE SUMMER *Always check with your child's paediatrician before introducing supplements.

The dos and don’ts of keeping kids healthy and happy this summer Unless you're planning on jetting off on an epic summer holiday, scarpering as soon as the bell sounds and returning as the gates swing open for the next academic year, then you'll need to brace yourself for a long, hot UAE summer. Indeed, for those of us staying close to home for the best part of the school holidays, dealing with the extreme heat and lots of time spent indoors can have a knock on effect on our health. Help make sure your little ones stay fighting fit with our top tips for surviving a desert summer.

DO GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D Essential for keeping our bones, teeth and muscles healthy, vitamin D is created by the body when direct sunlight hits the skin. In this part of the world, squirrelling ourselves away indoors during the very hot summer months may put us at a greater risk of a deficiency. Generally speaking, children from

30

the age of one year and adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day, according to the UK's National Health Service (NHS). If you're not spending enough time outdoors, Dr Lucy Waugh, a Paediatrician at Mediclinic Middle East (mediclinic.ae) advises introducing a daily supplement. You can also boost their Vitamin D intake by sneaking it into their meals. Try upping their servings of oily fish such as salmon, says Lina Doumani, MSc., a DHA and DHCC licensed Clinical Dietitian in Dubai. “Cod liver oil, portobello mushrooms, eggs, fortified cereal and dairy products, as well as soy yoghurt and soy milk, are also good sources of Vitamin D,” she adds.

DON'T LET HEALTH NIGGLES GET THE BETTER OF YOU We typically associate colds and coughs with the winter season, but being cooped up inside during the summer, from your home to soft

play, can also put you at risk of the sniffles. “Most upper respiratory tract infections in children are due to viruses, which are often transmitted through infected persons coughing or sneezing on objects or toys,” Dr Shola Faniran, a Specialist Paediatrician at The Children's Medical Centre in Dubai (tcmcdubai.com). To curb the chances of germs being passed around, she recommends keeping sick kids at home, teaching them to cough and sneeze into their elbows and to properly use and dispose of tissues. Good hand hygiene is also key. “Forming a routine of regular hand washing – before and after meals, and after using the bathroom – from a very young age, enables hand washing to become a good habit," she says. Lastly, make sure their diet is as healthy as possible so they can fend off germs. “Eating lots of fruit – a good source of vitamin C – or taking Vitamin C supplements may support a healthy immune system,” she adds.

SUMMER HEALTH

DON'T FORGET TO HYDRATE “Staying well hydrated in the hot summer months is crucial,” says Dr Faniran. “We lose more body fluids by sweating, and air-conditioned rooms may mask the need for rehydration.” Children especially need to be reminded to drink water, as their thirst reflex is less mature, adds Dr Waugh. It’s also wise to monitor their pee: “Passing urine four to eight times a day is healthy and the urine should be clear – not dark yellow," she says. Water can get boring after a while, so mix it up with some naturally flavoured options, suggests Doumani. “Kids love colourful drinks – add blueberries to sparkling water or strawberry juice or pomegranate.”

DO HELP THEM TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Sleep is vital for children – but how much is enough? The National Sleep Foundation recommends between 1013 hours for preschoolers (aged 3-5), between 9-11 hours for school-aged children (aged 6-13) around 8-10 hours for teenagers (possibly more if they’re grumpy). It might be unbearably humid, but summer shouldn’t mean a change to routine. “Be consistent, and ensure the room is well ventilated and cool,” advises Dr Faniran. If you use a fan, avoid pointing it towards your child but use it to keep the air circulating in the room. When using the AC, make sure the room doesn't get too cold. The Lullaby Trust recommends trying to keep the room temperature between 16-20°C for babies – you can use a thermometer where they sleep to keep a check on it.

have a child who is allergy prone. There are many companies in the UAE that you can call upon for a clean sweep of your AC units. Saniservice (saniservice.com) offers a cleaning and disinfecting service using a chemical free biosanitizer.

DON'T STOP MOVING Summer temperatures can make us feel sluggish at times, but there’s still plenty of ways to get moving. Book them in for swimming or gymnastic lessons, a fun session at an indoor trampoline centre, or treat them to an afternoon at a waterpark. “Physical activity keeps their mood in check, giving the brain a rush of

endorphins, the ‘happy hormones’,” says Doumani.

DO KEEP A WATCH ON SCREEN TIME Kids becoming anxious or restless from being kept indoors? Plan some fun activities to sway them from reaching for the screens. According to Dr Waugh, more than two hours a day of screen time can impact a child’s sleeping patterns and mental rest. “It’s important to plan ahead and think of other ways to entertain little ones during the ‘super hot can’t go outside’ months,” she says. Crafternoons, talent shows and good old-fashioned games are all winners.

“Kids need to be reminded to drink water, as their thirst reflex is less mature”

DO GIVE YOUR AC A SUMMER HEALTH CHECK Speaking of the AC, as we rely on it more than usual during the summer, it’s important to change and clean the filters regularly to keep it free from mold and bacteria, and ensure the air quality is as healthy as possible. This is especially important if you

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EDUCATION Whether you’re new to the UAE, have just had a baby or are looking to switch schools, you’ll be eager to get up to date with everything you need to know to choose the right nursery or school for your child

32

ESSENTIALS

P

re-primary curriculums start at age three (your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31 July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools or 31 December for other curricula) in the UAE, while compulsory education begins from Grade 1 (approximately age six, depending on your child’s birth date and the curriculum they will study). Dubai is booming. There are currently 209 private schools in Dubai (176 of which were inspected in 2018-2019) offering 17 different curricula, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools in the emirate. Over 90 percent of Dubai students study in private schools. As a result, places are hard to come by in the most sought-after schools and can be a challenge to find at short notice in some year groups, particularly the Foundation and Reception ages, between four and six. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, private schools operate across three regions – Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra – catering to around 200,000 students. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is responsible for managing, guiding, adopting and implementing various educational development strategies and initiatives in the region, with its Irtiqa’a inspection system measuring quality and supporting improvements so that all schools in the emirate compare well with international standards. Your child’s school placement may be organised through the company you work for, but if not, it’s wise to shortlist several schools so you have options should you not gain a place at your top choice. Be sure to research the assessment and admission criteria for the schools you shortlist, as well as the requirements for fees and payment schedules.

EARLY YEARS Currently, more than 120 early childhood education centres are

registered in Dubai, according to KHDA. Here, the authority highlights factors to consider when selecting a nursery:

Curriculum and approach to learning What kind of curriculum or learning approach does the centre follow? Whatever the approach, there should be clear learning and development outcomes for your child and mechanisms for the teacher to report on your child’s progress on a regular basis. Depending on your first language, you will want to ask about the languages used in the centre. For example, will your child be given the opportunity to interact with adults speaking good Arabic and good English? Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn. Some centres also enhance their curriculum with in-house programmes or visits by outside organisations.

Quality of provision It is important to inquire about and, if possible, observe the teaching and learning. In general, are the teachers friendly, caring and qualified to provide care and nurturing for your child and do they make you feel welcome in the centre and answer your questions openly and fully? Ask about the nationality and qualifications of the staff and about the staff-to-child ratio – how many children will be under the care of each adult?

PARENT-SCHOOL CONTRACT Upon enrolling in a school, you will be required to sign a Parent-School contract at the start of the school year, which ensures that both schools and parents are aware of their duties and responsibilities towards each other and towards their children. The terms and conditions stipulated in the contract will also be a reference for dispute resolution. However, if your child is continuing at the same school, you will not be required to sign the parentschool contract annually. Your contract with the school will continue to remain valid while your child is enrolled at the same school. A new contract shall be issued and signed by the parent only if your child’s school is changed.

The environment The Ministry of Social Affairs sets out a number of safety regulations, which early childhood education centres must follow. In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the presence of a centre nurse, the number of staff who are qualified in first aid and the safety

33

34

ESSENTIALS and security measures taken by the centre. Ask about the measures taken to ensure a clean environment and to prevent cross-contamination. You will also want to check that there are secure procedures to stop unauthorised people entering the building and for the drop-off and pick-up of children by authorised adults only.

STARTING SCHOOL With compulsory education starting from Grade 1, the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, which run from April to March. There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Here are the factors to consider when choosing a school:

Curriculum The curriculum is much more than the textbooks or examinations – it refers to everything the school teaches, including subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom. These include extracurricular activities, school trips, and visitors to the school. Different curricula also adopt different approaches to learning. All curricula lead to public examinations and qualifications. These will be important considerations in your choice of curriculum for your child – you may need to think about the requirements of any future application to university or further education, either in the UAE or abroad. In addition, if you are coming from abroad, your selection of

a curriculum may depend upon your country of origin as you may want your child to integrate back into your home country’s education system at some time in the future.

SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN DUBAI

Quality of education The learning outcomes and performance of schools will be important to you in making your decision. The Dubai School Inspections Bureau’s (DSIB’s) annual inspection reports allow you to look at these and other aspects of schools in detail (visit khda.gov.ae for individual inspection reports).

School environment Your child will be spending a lot of time in school and all aspects of the school have an impact on your child’s social development and personality. As part of the decision-making process, try to arrange a tour of the school, talk with administrators, teachers and students and see the school in action. Areas you should talk about include how the school is structured, whether classes are mixed and/or whether classes are streamed for ability, how transport is arranged, and the arrangements for lunch and breaks. You can also find out the school policies on examinations, assessment, discipline, dealing with bullying, communications with parents, and technology integration, to name just a few. For more information on choosing and enrolling in education in Dubai, visit khda.gov.ae and for more details on education in Abu Dhabi, visit adek.abudhabi.ae

SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN ABU DHABI Irtiqa’a inspection system of ADEK employs a team that includes specialists with curriculum expertise in the school’s given curriculum or curricula. Inspections in private and government schools in Abu Dhabi take place once within a two-year cycle, using the aforementioned six-level scale, with Band A including levels Good to Outstanding; Band B covering Acceptable; and Band C including Weak and Very Weak ratings.

The Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) of KHDA provides comprehensive information on the standard of private school education in Dubai, which helps to inform improvement planning at school and policy level. This is achieved through a number of approaches, including annual school inspections, parents meetings and focus groups, teachers, parents and students surveys. The inspection results, which are released in February or March for Indian and Pakistani schools and in April for all other schools, is based on a six-level scale, as follows: OUTSTANDING – quality of performance substantially exceeds the expectation of the UAE; VERY GOOD – quality of performance exceeds the expectation of the UAE; GOOD – quality of performance meets the expectation of the UAE; ACCEPTABLE – quality of performance meets the minimum level of quality required in the UAE; WEAK – quality of performance is below the expectation in the UAE; VERY WEAK – quality of performance is significantly below the expectation in the UAE. Inspectors assess quality of education at a variety of levels so the rankings are a great resource to use when considering schools.
