Better Education Guide
A helping hand Private tutoring has never been so popular: every term, parents spend thousands of dirhams on supplementing their child’s education – but is it really necessary? We find out when you should employ a private tutor, how to vet them, and what kind of schoolwork they can help your child with…
How can I make sure I find the best personal tutor for my child?
Angela Flynn, Director of Education, Sylvan Learning “Before entrusting your child’s academic future to someone, it is important to ensure the tutor you’re considering is qualified and will personalise the tutoring to fit your child’s August 2013
individual needs. First, make sure the instructor is licensed or certified – teachers will need the proper qualifications to assess, diagnose and tutor to a child’s weaknesses and strengths. In Dubai, KHDA approval ensures accountability. Next, look for an instructor with experience teaching children the same age as your child and request an assessment to determine their unique needs and help to set goals. Find an instructor with expertise in the subject of your choosing and ask the tutor how they will help your child master a specific skill and how
‘Be sure to ask prospective tutors for references from their past employers’ they can work with you and your child’s teachers. Finally, ask prospective tutors for references and testimonials from previous employers – working with a reputable company or individual will provide you with the reassurance that your investment of time and finances are well spent.” 3
Essentials What kind of schoolwork can a tutor help with, and how can I ensure the assistance is working?
Christopher Gyngell, Director, Carfax Private Tutors “We tutor children and adults of all ages, although our most typical age range is from 4 to 18 years of age, with our tutors able to teach most subjects of the UK, US and International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula. All tutors provide a tailored scheme of work for each pupil, taking into account their academic goals and ability, as well as the timeframe available for tuition. Based on these factors, the scheme of work will show both pupil and parent how they can work towards their goal. Built into the scheme of work will be a level of assessment, which will give the pupil accurate feedback as to how they are progressing, and what extra steps they can take in self-study to progress further. With a private tutor, rather than just at school, a student can gain confidence in their studies and better understand topics they were previously unsure about. In school, pupils are often required to compete for attention to satisfy all their questions and due to time 4
‘With a private tutor a student can gain confidence in their studies’ constraints, teachers often find they are not able to go beyond the curriculum. As for materials, tutors require very little, save for a desk or table and the right number of chairs. Work can take place in any environment in your home, although quieter areas are preferable. Tutors will provide any worksheets, past papers or study materials required for the lesson but if pupils have workbooks they would like to keep notes in, they can bring
those along to the lesson. Tutors can monitor a child in different ways: they will review what was covered in the lesson, they will give homework if requested or, for children working towards formal examinations, tutors will often provide relevant past papers to ensure the student is approaching the exam in the correct way so it really personalises your child’s education in a way that the classroom cannot.”
Essentials How do I decide when it is necessary to employ a private tutor for my kids?
Jacinta Adonis, parent and client of Sylvan Learning “When we moved over from South Africa in March, my daughters couldn’t start school right away and I found it necessary to employ a tutor so they could be stimulated, get back into a routine and find out what the curriculum
6
was like here. I also needed a tutor to prepare my children for the assessment tests they would have to take in order to get into a new school and I wanted them to be able to make some new friends. Their tutors work with them two hours a day, and make sure they understand every concept of their schoolwork before they move onto the next lesson. They have to understand everything 100%, which is wonderful, as in a classroom you’re limited to following a syllabus. If my daughters have problem areas, their tutors can focus directly on them. When they start school in September, I will still use a tutor to help
my eldest with her maths and English to strengthen her understanding and learning as she needs extra support in these areas that a normal classroom can’t give her. I love that there are regular assessments to see how my daughters are progressing and as a parent, you can ask at any stage to discuss how they’re doing. What I really like is I know my children are getting one-on-one support – my daughter’s tutor even provided her mobile number to call if she needed extra help. Tutors are there to help figure out your child’s weak and strong points and to help make them a wellrounded student.”

Taking an active interest in your child’s homework can help them to be more successful at school. So what can you do to help? We’ve discovered these top tips…
1. Location Establish a consistent workspace for your child, but let them do the choosing. Some kids work best with a desk set up in their bedroom, while others prefer being amidst all the action, whether it’s in the kitchen or on the couch. Wherever they focus best, let them work there but keep it distraction free – no TV, games or loud siblings nearby.
2. Supplies Ensure your child has everything they need to complete their assignments: from pens and paper to laptops and books; don’t let them use the excuse that they don’t have what they require to do the task, especially with special project materials.
3. Ask questions Let your child know it’s ok to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to say you’re not sure of how to do a task either. It lets them know it’s ok to not know the answer and to make mistakes, and gives them an invaluable opportunity to find resources on their own.
4. Correct less While proofing your child’s work, check a few answers to August 2013
make sure they’re doing the task correctly and understand the basic concepts, but don’t look over every question. Correcting every answer will not help their teacher understand how well they’re doing in a certain class.
5. Work together When trying to convince kids to do a mundane task like homework, it will inspire them if you do some work of your 13
Essentials then they’re far more likely to do it well. Let them know the benefits it will have on their future by showing them how their tasks affect everyday events in your own life, from adding up supermarket bills to reading the morning newspaper.
8. Set a time Let them feel they’re in charge by letting them choose the time to do their homework while making sure it isn’t just before bedtime. Agree upon a cut-off point by which homework must be completed, with an added benefit of them being able to enjoy fun activities prior to bedtime. own with them. Whether it’s balancing your accounts or bringing home work from the office, doing tasks of your own show your child that you’re responsible and completing chores too.
6. Make it fun Make homework time a happy and fun activity to look forward to. Turn questions into a puzzle to be solved, flashcards into collectible cards, or put maths problems in terms of money. For example, they could win monopoly money or points that can be redeemed for treats.
7. Future thinking If your child understands the benefits of doing and understanding their homework 14
9. Use praise Praising tasks done well and downplaying poor performances will help your kid more than focusing on the negatives. When they don’t achieve what they need to, avoid a yelling match and remind them what you agreed upon together when discussing their homework responsibilities, expressing a hope to see things improve the next day.
10. Stay away Make a point of staying out of the room while your child is doing their homework so they will be encouraged to think through problems on their own before asking for help. Even when asked, try and respond with questions to help them come to the solution.

Want to give your little ones a head start at school? A healthy mind starts with a healthy lunchbox...
If you want to be sure of your children eating healthily, sending them off to school with a packed lunch puts you in control of their diet. But what to put in it to keep your kids happy and healthy? Sometimes meal times can be a struggle with kids. Getting them to eat healthily is not always easy and knowing exactly what to feed your child is often an overwhelming task – it’s all about finding a balance that’s key to keeping both sides happy. And Dubaibased Health Factory seems to have found the answer. Set up in 2005, Health Factory has served up healthy, natural foods to more than 10,000 hungry customers around the UAE. And their The Little Heroes lunches for children have been a huge hit with parents. The Little Heroes programme delivers six meals a day to keep little ones fuelled for a day of fun and learning: breakfast, a school snack, a mid-day snack, lunch, an evening snack and dinner. The meals are delivered to your door and have been conveniently packaged and are easy-to-eat – perfect for busy schedules. Rest assured that these meals will also go down a treat August 2013
with the kids, despite their healthy credentials – they’ll be able to tuck into healthy burgers, sandwiches and pizzas along with muffins and fresh juices. Vegetarians are well catered for as well, and proteins such as eggs, dairy, soy and lentils help to liven up the leafy greens. Health Factory’s dietician Shirin Janoos emphasises that kids’ lunches need an ideal balance of important nutrients to match your child’s daily requirements – Healthy Factory dieticians estimate what each individual needs, taking into account their age, activity
‘Avocados, nuts and fish are not only healthy but improve memory and learning’ level, body composition and diet. “Make sure your child’s meals are rich in proteins, complex carbohydrates, and nutrients such as iron, calcium and fibre,” says Shirin. “They will ensure that your child grows strong and healthy, as well as help them to maintain a proper metabolism.” 17
Essentials Foods that always need to be featured in your child’s meals at school include lean proteins, vegetables and fruits and healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts and fish, which are not only healthy but are known to improve memory and learning. And don’t overlook drinks – avoid sugary fruit juices and sodas and make sure your kid stays hydrated, which is essential for good cognitive health. For those who struggle with picky eaters, Shirin warns parents that their children may need repeated exposure to a new food before they take the first bite, especially when you’re trying to get them to eat their vegetables. “Encourage children by talking about a food’s colour, shape, aroma and texture – not whether it tastes good. Serve new foods along with your child’s favourites or provide veggies with a favourite dip, cutting foods into various shapes with cookie cutters,” she explains. And remember that if dinner looks good, your kids are more likely to want to devour it: “Even simply giving your child meals with a variety of brightly coloured foods will encourage them to eat healthier options.” For more information, contact the Health Factory on 04 347 3808
