It’s no easy decision, which is why you’ll find much inspiration and advice within these pages. Better Education Guide
The first day at school Your child’s first day at nursery or playgroup can be a daunting prospect for both you and your child. Lisa Lewis, nursery manager at Inspire Children’s Nursery, Dubai, has valuable advice to ensure that your family’s experience of nursery is a happy one from the very start.
Before the big day When you’re choosing a nursery ask the staff how they comfort a distressed child during drop-off time, and what you can do to help make the transition smoother for them. For example, at Inspire Children’s Nursery we provide a ‘settling in’ period, when you can stay with your child and experience nursery life together. Friends with older children will have good advice, too, having been August 2014
through it before. Introduce your child to the teachers and staff in advance and show them pictures of the nursery and the carers. You can visit the faculty itself or go online to look at the nursery’s gallery and videos, so they are familiar with the places and faces they are about to see. Look at picture books and nursery rhymes that show young children going to school, such as Spot Goes to School or
Look and Say School. Practice the process of packing bags and lunch boxes in order to establish the new routine they’ll soon start. Disruption to a child’s routine can have a big impact, so this will help ease them in sooner. Create a photo book with printed pictures of family and friends and take it to the nursery. Staff can then show your child the book during their first days, helping to calm fragile nerves. 5
First day tips There will be apprehensive glances, a few tears, that aching feeling of being alone… And that’s how parents feel, not to mention children. Thankfully, many children come through the nursery doors with much resilience and excitement, ready to explore the amazing opportunities that await them. While the first day of nursery can also
6
be stressful for parents, you must stay positive as your child receives their cues from you. Over the course of a day, a week, or longer, work with nursery staff to help your child settle in, and listen to them when they suggest that it’s time to separate. Provide your child with a favourite toy, book or game so they have something familiar with them
– the photo book that you’ve made together is a good idea. Develop your child’s sense of security and curiosity in their new environment by helping them engage in play with other children. List your child’s likes and dislikes, regular routine and any other important information that will help the teachers get to know your child better.
Hello, goodbye Every day, you and your child say goodbye to one another in the morning and hello again in the afternoon. These hellos and goodbyes are their first steps on a lifelong journey of learning how to separate from and reunite with the important people in their lives. This is a process and not something to be achieved in the first week, month, or even year of childcare. Indeed, we adults sometimes find it difficult to separate and reunite. These tips will ensure that your child will only shed tears when they leave nursery, after they’ve spent a wonderful day playing with newfound friends. t
When you arrive and before you leave the nursery, spend a few minutes with your child there. Your presence will make the transition easier.
t
It’s tempting to leave quietly if your child is busy but you should never leave without saying goodbye. This will strengthen their trust in you and they’ll know that you won’t disappear without warning.
hellos will be harder than on other days. This will depend on your child’s stage of development, t being hungry, tired, or upset by a change in their schedule. t
t
Create rituals. This could be a simple hug but a routine and knowing what to do will be comforting to both of you.
t
Be aware that on some days goodbyes and

Always communicate. Changes that seem minor to us can be huge to a young child. Let nursery staff know if there have been any changes at home that could cause disruption, such as live-in visitors arriving, a new pet,
a newborn sibling or an ill parent, for example. Ask your child’s teacher what happens once you’ve left. Do they cry throughout the session or do they perk up 10 minutes later, once they’re distracted by an activity? You may need to spend more time in the session with them – on the other hand, some children get on better with brief goodbyes. Try it out, and see what works best.
Kit your kid out for school Follow these helpful measures to get the right uniform
Taking the kids shopping can be tiring at the best of times. Ice cream and toys may be deliberated more than shoe size and sleeve length. But buying the right uniform for your kids’ new school year needn’t be a headache with this helpful need-to-know guide.
Fitting in “What do you need to buy?” asks Mike Embley, principal of Nord Anglia International School Dubai. “Of course, much of it depends on the age of the child and the requirements of the school. One thing that is very important though is the uniform. Children don’t like to be the odd one out on the first day in a school where uniform is required.” You may be able to order the right crest and 10
colours directly through the school, otherwise ask which uniform shops you should visit. For the hotter months of September to November and April to July a simple uniform of black trousers/ skirt and a white shirt may be all that’s initially required, in which case you might be able to buy clothes from a children’s fashion outlet in the mall. This is good news for parents on a budget, at least until the weather calls for a school-specific jumper or blazer. Principal Embley suggests buying two pairs of trousers/skirts and several shirts to last the week.
It’s all in the details Don’t overlook the details, either. Your child will need the right coloured socks, shoes and belt, and perhaps

a tie, crest-emblazoned satchel, the requisite sports kit and even a lab coat. For girls, are the socks kneehigh or ankle length? Are only certain coloured headscarves allowed? Does the uniform change between a pinafore, skirt and/or trousers depending on the season? If your child needs to wear a tie, spend a few minutes each morning practicing how to tie it up to the right length.
Get kitted out For sports, a simple P.E. kit may be all that’s required, especially for younger children. In which case, trainers, polo shirts, shorts, jogging bottoms or tracksuit bottoms are easy essentials to buy. Older children may need items like shin pads and football boots – ask the school what they supply and what you need to buy.
Do your homework Principal Embley points out that it’s crucial to prepare your child for the new school year. “For whichever year group or grade they are joining there will be steps that you are able to take over the holidays that will prepare them,” he advises. “It might be reading lists, revision booklets, or topics to read around. Whatever these steps are it is important that parents work with their children to ensure it gets done. However, it shouldn’t take up the whole of the holiday; children need a break,” he adds. “Walking into the new school year unprepared won’t give students the best possible chance to succeed. Even a few hours of preparation around a topic is enough to give them a significant advantage. If your school does not provide tailored revision work then there are a number of books or websites that can fill in. This is especially true for mathematics, but August 2014

it is not limited to that area. Writing a story, reading, talking about something other than what’s on television – all of these count. It’s time and effort, not just uniform.”

Gadget geeks “Parents also need to think about school bags, water bottles and lunch boxes, pens and pencils and the right calculator,” advises the principal. “Does the school recommend a particular calculator for a certain level of maths? Does the school require a certain brand of laptop or tablet? It’s these particular requirements that are important and very practical.” In these days of learning technology plays a huge part in your child’s development, both mentally and socially. Kids might cunningly demand the latest iPad to match their friends, but it may be very helpful with their learning at home: there are many educational apps and games they can play that make learning fun. However, don’t forget to ask what the school supplies – they may have tablets that students can share in the classroom.

Bring a list of all the school’s requirements with you to the shop so you know exactly what to buy. Measure your child before you go shopping, even if they’re with you. Write down your child’s inside leg (to 5cm off the ground, with shoes on), waist, chest, height (with shoes off) and collar measurements. Try to go for items that are slightly larger to allow for growth. When you’re buying shirts, make sure you can fit two fingers inside the fastened collar. Buy between three and five blouses or shirts, depending on how often you do the washing during the week. Choose machine-washable, minimum-iron clothes and goodquality fabrics so that clothes last longer and are easy to launder. This will save you time and money. Choose simple styles with easy fastenings for younger children. Hook-and-eye and popper buttons on shirts are easy for little fingers. Velcro is a good option for shoes. Children’s feet grow in spurts and will need regular shoe fittings. Make sure they have a thick sole for added comfort and leather uppers so growing feet can breathe. Kids lose things – fact! Order name tapes and allow plenty of time to sew them on before term starts. Don’t leave things until the last minute, particularly if you think clothes might need to be altered or made to order. Don’t economise on quality – then you can hand clothes on to a younger sibling. Clothes should last years, not just a few terms. 15

As soon as your baby is born they’re in a curious wonderland of new shapes, colours, tastes and sounds. Years later, even in old age, we’re still learning – in the 21st century grandparents are tossing aside their knitting needles to surf the web and Skype. At that age, you want to look back on your life with no regrets and hope that your children and grandchildren will do the same. As parents and grandparents, providing our offspring with the best possible education is a great responsibility. Schooling forms the crux of a child’s development into adulthood and ultimately determines their path through life. In the UAE schooling is an investment, but it also has the most rewarding return: your child’s development, both mentally and socially.
ADCB’s Banking on Education program helps parents plan and budget for their child’s future. “At ADCB we are constantly trying to gain insights into our customers’ needs and ambitious goals.
