HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EDUCATION Whether you’re new to the UAE, have just had a baby or are looking to switch schools, you’ll be eager to get up to date with everything you need to know to choose the right nursery or school for your child

ESSENTIALS

ompulsory education in the UAE begins from Grade 1 (approximately age six, depending on your child’s birth date and the curriculum they will study). Dubai is booming. There are currently 194 schools in Dubai, and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools, estimates that there will be a need for an additional 80,000 to 100,000 school places by 2020. As a result, places are hard to come by in the most soughtafter schools and can be a challenge to find at short notice in some year groups, particularly the Foundation and Reception ages, between four and six. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, there are approximately 185 private schools operating in three regions: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. These cater to around 200,000 students. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is responsible for managing, guiding, adopting and implementing various educational development strategies and initiatives in the region, with its Irtiqa’a inspection system measuring quality and supporting improvements so that all schools in the emirate compare well with international standards. Your child’s school placement may be organised through the company you work for, but if not, it’s wise to shortlist several schools so you have options should you not gain a place at your top choice. Be sure to research the assessment and admission criteria for the schools you shortlist, as well as the requirements for the fees.

EARLY YEARS Currently, more than 120 early childhood education centres for children up to four years are registered in Dubai, according to KHDA. While many of these are standalone centres, many schools also offer early childhood education. Here, the authority highlights the considerions for selecting a nursery:

Curriculum and approach to learning What kind of curriculum or learning approach does the centre follow? Whatever the approach, there should be clear learning and development outcomes for your child and mechanisms for the teacher to report on your child’s progress on a regular basis. Depending on your first language, you will want to ask about the languages used in the centre. For example, will your child be given the opportunity to interact with adults speaking good Arabic and good English? Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn. Some centres also enhance their curriculum with in-house programmes or visits by outside organisations.

Quality of provision It is important to inquire about and, if possible, observe the teaching and learning. In general, are the teachers friendly, caring and qualified to provide care and nurturing for your child and do they make you feel welcome in the centre and answer your questions openly and fully? Ask about the nationality and qualifications of the staff and about the staff-to-child ratio – how many children will be under the care of each adult?

PARENT-SCHOOL CONTRACT Upon enrolling in a school, you will be required to sign a Parent-School contract at the start of the school year, which ensures that both schools and parents are aware of their duties and responsibilities towards each other and towards their children. The terms and conditions stipulated in the contract will also be a reference for any dispute resolution. Starting this year, if your child is continuing at the same school, you will not be required to sign the Parent-School contract annually. Your contract with the school will continue to remain valid. A new contract shall be issued and signed by the parent only if your child changes school.

The environment The Ministry of Social Affairs sets out a number of safety regulations, which early childhood education centres must follow. In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the presence of a centre nurse, the number of staff who are qualified in first aid and the safety and security measures taken by the centre. Ask about the measures taken to ensure a clean environment and to prevent

ESSENTIALS cross-contamination. You will also want to check that there are secure procedures to stop unauthorised people entering the building and for the drop-off and pick-up of children by authorised adults only.

of a curriculum may depend upon your country of origin, as you may want your child to integrate back into your home country’s education system at some time in the future.

STARTING SCHOOL

The learning outcomes and performance of schools will be important to you in making your decision. The Dubai School Inspections Bureau’s (DSIB’s) annual inspection reports allow you to look at these and other aspects of schools in detail (visit khda.gov.ae for individual inspection reports).

With compulsory education starting from Grade 1, the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, which runs from April to March. There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31 of July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, or 31 December for other curricula. Here are the factors to consider when choosing a school:

Curriculum The curriculum is much more than the textbooks or examinations – it refers to everything the school teaches, including subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom. These include extra-curricular activities, school trips, and visitors to the school. Different curricula also adopt different approaches to learning. All curricula lead to public examinations and qualifications. These will be important considerations in your choice of curriculum for your child – you may need to think about the requirements of any future application to university or further education, either in the UAE or abroad. In addition, if you are coming from abroad, your selection

Quality of education

School environment Your child will be spending a lot of time in school and all aspects of the school have an impact on your child’s social development and personality. As part of the decision-making process, try to arrange a tour of the school, talk with administrators, teachers and students, and see the school in action. Areas you should talk about include how the school is structured, whether classes are mixed and/or whether classes are streamed for ability, how transport is arranged, and the arrangements for lunch and breaks. You can also find out the school policies on examinations, assessment, discipline, dealing with bullying, communications with parents, and technology integration, to name just a few. SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN ABU DHABI Irtiqa’a inspection system of ADEK employs a team that includes specialists with curriculum expertise in the school’s given curriculum or curricula. Inspections in private and government schools in Abu Dhabi take place once within a two-year cycle, using the six-level scale (see right), with Band A including levels Good to Outstanding; Band B covering Acceptable; and Band C including Weak and Very Weak ratings.

The Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) of KHDA provides comprehensive information on the standard of private school education in Dubai, which helps to inform improvement planning at school and policy level. This is achieved through a number of approaches, including annual school inspections, parents meetings, focus groups and surveys. The inspection results, which are released in February or March for Indian and Pakistani schools and in April for all other schools, is based on a six-level scale, as follows: OUTSTANDING – quality of performance substantially exceeds the expectation of the UAE; VERY GOOD – quality of performance exceeds the expectation of the UAE; GOOD – quality of performance meets the expectation of the UAE; ACCEPTABLE – quality of performance meets the minimum level of quality required in the UAE; WEAK – quality of performance is below the expectation in the UAE; VERY WEAK – quality of performance is significantly below the expectation in the UAE. Inspectors assess quality of education at a variety of levels so the rankings are a great resource to use when considering schools.

With a new school year comes much excitement, anticipation and sometimes anxiety. How can we best prepare our children? Emma Dawson, deputy head of secondary at Uptown School, advises…

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES Ensure a bedtime routine is established, your children are getting enough sleep and they are able to wake up in time for the busy school mornings. Ensure kids have a healthy, nutritious breakfast. This will sustain them until morning break and help with focus during lessons. Packed snacks and lunches also need to provide energy.

FAMILIARITY Anxiety is often manifested by a fear of the unknown. If a student is brand new to the school, taking a school tour in advance of the start of school can help, as can attending orientation and induction sessions. Knowing where key areas are, such as the cafeteria, reception, library and gym can be incredibly helpful. Reading through parent/student handbooks together can help understanding expectations, too.

EXCITEMENT Discuss all of the things they can look forward to, such as new friends, new subjects they may be taking and taking part in extracurricular activities, including sports and arts. Help them to set some goals prior to school, starting with things they would like to accomplish over the next 10 months.

ROUTINE Make sure everyone is prepared and organised for day one. Pack bags the night before, know what the drop-off expectations are, and ensure they know where to go. This will assist in giving them confidence to feel prepared and ready as they take on new challenges and adventures of the academic year.

COMMUNICATION To best support the students and ensure their happiness, lines of communication between the school, students and parents need to be strong. Back to school nights, introductory emails, and ‘meet the teacher’ events all support the key adults in students’ lives to connect with one another. As a parent, take the time to get to know your child’s teachers and how you can support each other in the coming year.

WHAT IS OPEN-ENDED PLAY? Open-ended play allows children to express themselves freely without pre-determined limitations and no fixed answer. “Any item that you did not purchase factory-packaged from a toy shop is likely to be an open-ended play material,” explains Bernadette KingTurner, founder and managing director of Beautiful Minds nurseries. FROZEN FEES There’s good news for parents in Dubai: the Dubai Executive Council approved the decision not to increase school fees for all private schools in Dubai for the academic year 2018-2019 in order to reduce the financial burden on parents. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, instructed the Knowledge and Human Development Authority to put the decision into effect immediately by informing private schools and parents.

Governors are the unsung heroes of the school system. We speak to Tarek Al Alami, chair to the board of governors at Jebel Ali School, about the role they play in helping a school deliver a quality education

roviding vital leadership to schools, governing boards are crucial for ensuring that schools are well run and that they deliver the best education for every student. Tarek Al Alami, regional director of The Education Development Trust (formerly CfBT Education Trust) for the Middle East, North Africa and India, and chair to the board of governors at Jebel Ali School, reveals the value governors bring to a school…

Who makes up the board of governors? Taking into consideration the school’s size and complexity, between six and 10 board members is about the right amount for a large primary

and secondary school, modelled around what works in a UK context. It’s standard practice to have a treasurer and a vice chair. Key functions and responsibilities need to be considered, which can change depending on the evolution of a school. At not-for-profit Jebel Ali School, we focus on safeguarding, Special Educational Needs (SEN) and inclusion, Arabic and Islamic studies, Emirati enrollment, and our facilities.

How do schools recruit their governors? Board members can include investors, school leaders, parents, students and others drawn from the community. School governors are appointed for their skill sets or areas of expertise, such as law and finance. At Jebel Ali School, people will often email or come and talk to us, and we keep a record of everyone who expresses an interest – we always welcome it. We also check out

All of the governor board members dedicate their time on a voluntary basis various clubs and associations when we’re looking for a specific expertise. Candidates will be interviewed by members of the board, and we will also follow the regular education recruitment process, such as police checks.

How much time does a governor need to dedicate to the role? All of the governor board members dedicate their time on a voluntary basis, and their work is incredibly important. At Jebel Ali School, we meet formally twice a term for approximately three hours. We also run a subcommittee structure, which board members contribute to – they

will meet regularly throughout the school term. Some board members will have a dedicated cause to champion, which could take up significant amounts of time. It’s hard to quantify the time needed, but it is a commitment. This includes weekend and evening work, and sometimes a role requires some time during the day.

What is the difference in a board’s role in a for-profit compared to a not-for-profit private school environment? For-profit school governing boards have an ownership structure that sits alongside the board, which has its particular needs and desires about

how the board will function. The board may focus on strategy and education, and it may get involved in finance, but it doesn’t have to. A not-for-profit school, however, sets targets, formulates school policy and approves the budget because there isn’t an ownership structure.

How do parents come into contact with the board of governors? At Jebel Ali School, our ParentTeacher Association (PTA) chair is a full member of the board, whose role is to be the eyes and ears of the parental body on the board. This was something we introduced a number of years ago, and has been critical in ensuring we get that voice at the table. We’ll have a standing item on the agenda for the PTA to discuss any issues and we can provide information to the chair to feedback

Their work is incredibly important to the parents. We also have class representatives, who play a critical role in keeping parents informed and also feeding any issues back through the PTA. For my role, I have a school email address open to all parents and I will respond personally, whether by email or face to face.

What can be achieved by a board of governors? In 2014-15, Jebel Ali School was a fantastic primary school in Jebel Ali Village, with 600 students. We now have almost 1,200 children in an all-

through school. In 2016, we moved to a modern campus in Damac Hills. It is set in multi-storey buildings, with outdoor access from many of the spacious and flexible classrooms, shaded areas and courtyards and lots of greenery around the buildings, and it offers amazing facilities. It was the board of governors that drove that significant development forward. It took a huge amount of effort from everyone involved in that process, but to be able to see what was accomplished, with the precious personal time of a lot of people, is a wonderful achievement. KEEPING UP WITH VACCINATIONS Dubai Health Authority’s new single immunisation record is making it easier for parents to stay on track with their children’s vaccinations

eeping up with childhood vaccinations can be confusing for parents, and even more so for expats. Guidelines may differ to what is advised in our home countries, and trying to make sense of it all and stick to appointments is no easy task. Many parents may find themselves playing catch-up. However, for the first time in Dubai, each student will receive a single immunisation record, making it a whole lot easier for you to stay upto-date with your little one’s jabs. Launched in May, the Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA) Hasana initiative is an integrated electronic public health system for disease surveillance and management, set to be used by all public health providers in Dubai (both government and private, such as schools, hospitals and clinics) to better manage and deliver immunisation programmes and handle outbreaks. Part of a greater DHA school policy, which encourages a number of wellbeing goals, like munching through five portions of vegetables and fruits a day and clocking in 150 minutes of physical activity each week, a single

unified record for each person means kids (and parents) won’t have to worry about ‘the dog eating their consent form’, and nurses can move to a paperless system where they can log the immunisations that are given and scan the information direct to the DHA. What’s more, Hasana will be connected to DHA’s Tifli mobile app, so parents can view their child’s vaccination programme via their smartphone, receive reminders on when they’re due their next ones, and get handy notifications about mass immunisation campaigns, as well as any outbreaks (like chickenpox), as way of a heads up. All of this will help ensure children are safe from communicable diseases and that they won’t be immunised multiple times. Indeed, the system will ensure “high quality of care for all” according to Dr. Ayesha Al Theeb, public and community health specialist and acting head of School Health Section from the School Health Department at the DHA. “Hasana will support DHA strategy of integrating government and private health facilities and partners, enabling all of them to

A total of 23,158 students were expected to be vaccinated by the end of the academic year [2018], and all private school students in

the emirate will be registered by the 2018/2019 academic year. As Dr. Al Theeb says: “By the next academic year, we’re looking forward to covering most of the schools.” Hasana is already being praised by school health professionals in Dubai, including Dr. Amira Mohamed, school doctor at GEMS Al Barsha National School for Girls and GEMS Al Barsha National School for Boys. “Prevention is better than cure,” she says. “Communicable diseases have always been a burden on society and affect children’s health and therefore their future. As school doctors, we always advise our parents to be strict with DHA immunisation programmes and remind them of due vaccines. Thanks to this system, parents should never need worry about losing papers, missing any dose or duplication of any vaccine.” The sentiment is echoed by doctors, such as Dr. Nevine Alkabbany, a specialist paediatrician at Mediclinic Welcare hospital, who says that while children in Dubai are at low risk from infectious diseases, such as the measles outbreaks that routinely sweep Europe, staying on top of routine vaccinations is the only way to keep children safe. “Currently, there are so many outbreaks of infection,” she says. “We really have to prevent these things from happening in the UAE.”

It’s a divisive subject, however, with Dr. Alkabbany often seeing parents hesitant or unwilling to vaccinate their children. “From our side, we have to emphasise that the benefits of the vaccine are much more beneficial to children than the one or two cases of side effects, which are not 100 percent scientifically proven,” she says. Plus, vaccinations are often requested by international universities. “It’s quite common in the UAE for people to send their children to be educated overseas,” says Dr. Alkabbany. “So for example, if anyone wanted to send their child to study abroad at a university, one of the requirements is that they need to have had their vaccinations.” While it is a personal choice whether or not to vaccinate your child, it is now mandatory for children in the Dubai Municipality School System to be registered with Hasana before enrolling in nursery or school so there is an accurate record of each child’s immunisation status. If you feel uncertain about vaccinations, it’s best to speak with your doctor about any concerns and notify the school if you prefer to immunise your child elsewhere. Whatever you decide, Hasana’s aim is to simplify the immunisation process and ease the burden on parents, which can only be a good thing.

JAB JITTERS Most kids are squeamish – if not downright terrified – about needles. Here are some handy tips to help reduce anxiety… Be present It sounds obvious, but having a parent in the room during the procedure for comfort and support is advised, if not required, at most medical facilities. When they are set to receive an injection at school, prepare them with an honest “pep talk” in the morning. Make them laugh Tell a joke, make a funny face or tell them a hilarious story – anything you can do to distract and amuse them before and during the jab will ease any worries. Be honest Even small children like to be in the loop. Explain the benefits of a vaccine, tell them exactly what they can expect, and above all, don’t lie about the pain. “We explain to them that it’s a small prick and that is all,” says Dr Alkabbany. “We tell them that they will be strong and not have sickness later on. With a little trust and time, they are fine.” Reward them There’s nothing wrong with a little incentive. “The lollipop works like magic,” says Dr Alkabbany. “We give them stickers too – they have to choose the sticker they want to have after the injection. It’s a secret weapon.”

he ‘gifted and talented’ criteria for children in schools covers a wide and diverse group of children and skills. In general, the definition of ‘gifted’ refers to a child who has abilities in one or more academic subjects, such as English or maths whereas ‘talented’ refers to a child who has skills in a practical area like music, sport or art. Therefore children who are creatively gifted, intellectually gifted, learning disabled gifted and artistically gifted would all fall under this umbrella; the talented gymnast to the mathematical prodigy, the chess superstar to the accomplished young writer. Judging whether a child fits into the specific criteria is complex and is based on a range of different factors. This can be anything from the simple IQ test, where a score over 130 would indicate exceptional talent, to the personal observations of teachers and parents. These observations might be based around characteristics, such as being very verbally fluent for their age, picking up new skills or information quickly, being interested in topics associated with an older peer group and being self-taught in these areas or an ability to work things out quickly in their head and come up with unusual and original responses to problem solving activities. A good memory and a lively sense of imagination or a child with strong views and opinions may also be indicators. The child who is very curious, has excellent

“Being natively smart simply isn’t enough” analytical skills, shows depth in their thinking, demonstrates rapid and very advanced mastery of skills, who can think and act independently and who enjoys a challenge is likely to be the one who catches their teacher’s attention and identified as needing support as a gifted child. However, judging who requires this extra stretching is not always easy. It is important to remember that different children progress at different speeds and a prodigiously talented two-year-old maybe well within the norm by the time they reach school age. Being top at one school does not mean that the child is automatically gifted; they may be very average at another school. At other times, it is possible to mistake the hard working, well behaved student who regularly tops the class as being gifted and talented and to overlook the disruptive pupil who doesn’t always perform well but who has much more potential. Having identified a gifted student, what happens next? As educational psychologist Françoys Gagné (2003) says, “being natively smart simply isn’t enough – a child needs support and guidance to achieve his/her gifted potential.” This is where the environmental factors come into play, at school and at home, and both need

to work collaboratively to put in place a carefully executed plan to bring out and develop the child’s full potential. For schools, this can be by providing the child with an accelerated programme in the subject or across the year, by making sure the child is being extended in the class with more challenging tasks and given independent learning tasks. Many schools have switched on to matching the students with a teacher/mentor or pairing them with older students for cross age tutoring. And every school will be keen to enter students into the many competitions that are hosted, both nationally and internationally, to test their talents against a wider audience. Parents need to encourage their gifted and talented child’s interests, whether it is with extra classes, tutoring or by joining clubs or through playing games (such as Scrabble or Articulate) to encourage lateral thinking. The most important role a parent can play is to understand, value and support their child and, when necessary, fight for them to have the right provision in place. So how easy is it for the gifted and talented child to be supported while in the UAE? Each child is, of

If you’re new to the UAE, look for schools that have a successful ‘gifted and talented’ programme course, different but for many there is an extremely sound provision. The annual inspection cycle of schools in the UAE means that all ‘Very Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ schools in the UAE provide a well differentiated curriculum. This will scaffold learning for those who need extra support and provide the extension and stretch, which those with real talent and potential will need to maximise their skills and gifts. For gifted children, a school that provides support well beyond the norm and is open to going the extra mile is essential. An extremely talented pupil may need to attend subject classes in higher year groups and to be challenged by taking public exams well before their normal age. This requires careful planning and tailoring, not only for the academic programme of the pupil, but also with specialist mentoring of the pupil and the other students to make sure that any social impacts are well managed. While schools are relatively quick to adapt to the more conventionally academically gifted, not all schools are as flexible and supportive for those pupils who show exceptional talents in sport or dance or music. These talented pupils will often be required to miss days of school to attend national and international training or to take part in competitions. Schools need to agree to this and to make sure they have arrangements in place so that any missed lessons or work is caught up and the student is not disadvantaged by these absences. The best schools in Dubai are rightly proud of their current provision for gifted and talented pupils but are

aware of the need to continually strive, not only to identify all such pupils, but also provide suitable programmes. These schools are flexible towards the individual needs of their pupils and provide programmes that are based on setting high expectations and through carefully planned delivery. Even as the educational provision within Dubai continues to mature, we are already seeing the results of established ‘gifted and talented’ programmes in schools, as the many young people who are already accessing the top selective universities in the world proves. In addition, Dubai schools are also currently nurturing excellent chess players, world-class mathematicians, international polo players, go-kart drivers and footballers, as well as young leading musicians, to spotlight just a few of those who are benefiting from existing programmes. If you’ve just moved to the UAE, look for schools that have a successful ‘gifted and talented’ programme in place. The provision will not only identify these students, but will positively and energetically draw up an individual education plan, which can be effectively implemented and recognises the need for flexibility on behalf of the school and the parents. The success of any of the provisions is based on effective and realistic teamwork and expectations of the school, teachers, parents and, of course, the skills and gifts of the child. t Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS), a Taaleem school, we feel that inclusion and student wellbeing is essential in ensuring that each individual is able to work towards their true potential. One (often overlooked) branch of a school’s inclusive and supportive focus is that of the provision for gifted and talented students. At JBS, we use the KHDA 2015-2016 Inspection Framework definitions of gifted and talented. Here ‘gifted’ is referred to as “a student who is in possession of untrained and spontaneously-expressed exceptional

natural ability in one or more domains of human ability”. These domains will include intellectual, creative, social or physical abilities. In the case of a gifted student, while exceptional potential will be present, they may underachieve. Talented students are described as “a student who has been able to transform their ‘giftedness’ into exceptional performance”. A talented student will thus always be able to demonstrate exceptional levels of competence in the specific domain of human ability. Many schools focus their resources on students with significant academic or behavioural concerns

without realising that gifted and talented students (especially those that are not identified, appropriately challenged, and who may feel out of sync with their peers) are at risk for developing low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and feelings of isolation. Such students may disengage from their studies or deliberately underachieve. These are a particularly at-risk group who can often struggle with organisation, burnout (due to little free time), difficulty focusing on work that doesn’t interest them or that they don’t naturally excel at, and interactions with peers (finding similar interests). Many

PROMOTION gifted students also strive to reach an impossible goal of perfection, which can lead to procrastination and unnecessary time spent on already excellent projects. This can lead to elevated levels of anxiety and ailments, such as stomach problems, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)-like behaviours, and even eating disorders. Others may become disruptive or, in extreme cases, even exit early from their schooling. It is thus critical that this section of the school population receives appropriate support, both academically and in terms of their overall wellbeing. JBS addresses these challenges through an emphasis on teachers really knowing their students, both pastorally and academically. Each teacher has a context sheet for every one of their classes that breaks down individual student data for CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test), PASS (Pupils Attitudes Towards Self and School), information regarding gifted and talented, potential Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) and whether they require support for English as an Additional Language

(EAL). This ensures that students can be appropriately challenged. Dynamic groups can be arranged, and students can be adequately supported within all of their classes. Students at JBS are identified as gifted through teacher/parent nominations, CAT4 assessments, GL Progress Testing (English, maths or science), and external professionals, such as educational psychologists. Once identified, students are placed on the school’s gifted and talented register and a student passport (a one page profile with student specific information and targets) is created. Teachers use this information, together with details from the context sheet and, in collaboration with the inclusion department, plan students’ lessons appropriately (in terms of curriculum and differentiation) and provide individualised extension/ enrichment opportunities. This guarantees quality teaching, utilising a range of questioning techniques and problem-based learning, and ensures students are appropriately challenged. Teachers provide opportunities for talented students to use and develop their talents within lessons, to guide students

into other areas where other talents may flourish, and to celebrate their successes and achievement. Students are encouraged to take part in competitions and extracurricular activities (not just in their area of strength). Activities are encouraged within the school, across the Taaleem group of schools (such as Science Expos, Maths Olympiads, and Public Speaking), within the context of Dubai, and even abroad. This year, JBS entered six teams (two primary and four secondary) into the UAE’s first Tournament of the Minds. This provided an excellent opportunity for students to develop a range of skills, including problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. We also encourage other after-school activities, such as Lego Robotics, Model United Nations and Chess Club. One of our secondary students has recently gone on to be the youngest Emirati to climb Mount Kilimanjaro! The inclusion team at JBS works closely with parents and teachers to ensure that students meet their individual targets and that they are appropriately supported. In collaboration with the school counsellor and grade/subject leaders, all students’ Pupils Attitudes Towards Self and School (PASS) data is monitored to track and intervene where necessary with regards to their wellbeing. PASS includes useful information, such as Self Regard as a Learner, and Attitudes towards School which helps create a holistic picture of each student when used in collaboration with the CAT4 and the GL Progress tests. We also provide appropriate wellbeing and career counselling opportunities for students and parents. JBS launches a scholarship programme in 2018/19 for gifted and talented children. Nothing comes as more of a shock after a long summer holiday than being thrust back into the high-stress scenario that is the school run. We asked some parents for their golden tips on how to run the gauntlet without getting wound up, worn down and having to sign the dreaded late slip

efore actually having children, the thought of dropping your little darlings off at school seemed like a charming, heart-warming affair. Family breakfasts, sing-alongsong moments in the car, lunchboxes filled with exciting, restaurantstandard finger food and big beaming smiles as you kiss your child and send them off for a perfect day of learning and high-jinx. However, the reality, as we all know, is quite different. Your Sound of Music-inspired vision heads quickly out of the window and is replaced with something more like a scene from The Hunger Games. Where the odds are stacked against you (PE, the library run and spellings on the same day?), even the smallest mistake (running out of milk) can lose you everything and, when it comes to the crunch (in the car park), it can feel like it’s every parent for themselves. As we glide into a new school year, we asked some Dubai-based parents for their tips on how to make it through the morning routine with as little stress, sweat and tears as possible.

Yousef Lahej, 38, has three children aged 7, 5 and 4 at Jumeirah Primary School “When one of my children refuses to get dressed, I tell them they can go in to school

naked if they like. I generally get the lunchboxes done the evening before, but if there is an occasion when this hasn’t happened, and I wake to find I don’t have enough supplies in the fridge in the morning, then it’s a flying visit past a supermarket, packing the lunchboxes in the car while on the move. However, if I wake up really late and coincidentally all of my kids have slept in too, I relax. We are already late, so why stress? I figure that’s why the school has the late registry.” David Wilkins, 35, and Nour Mansour, 34, have three children, aged 12, 9 and 6, all at Horizon International School Nour: “If it’s one of those mornings where we have all had meltdowns before leaving the house, the car journey is normally silent… Which is actually quite pleasant. If we haven’t got time for breakfast, I don’t stress – I just make them sandwiches to go.” David: “If one of the children is taking a long time to get ready, I tell them we are leaving home without them, which normally gets them moving. My golden rule for a stress-free school run is waking up earlier than you’re meant to.”

“When I have nothing for lunch boxes, I contemplate if the school nurse will report me” Zoe Cairns, 40, is mum to a sevenyear-old boy, who goes to Jebel Ali School, and a two-year-old girl “When I realise I have nothing for lunch boxes, I contemplate if the school nurse would report me for sending biscuits, crisps and ketchup sandwiches, but can generally find something healthy to go in. The best way that I have found to take the stress out of the morning is to get everything prepped the night before. We have a crib sheet on the fridge, where we can check things off to make sure we haven’t missed anything… Lunchboxes and bags get packed and his uniform gets laid out ready, complete with pants, socks and shoes.”

Selina Smyth, 37, is mum to four kids, ages 11, 11, 8 and 5. All four go to Horizon International School “I get the kids involved in all aspects of the school run routine. If one of them is dawdling in the morning, I say, ‘Let’s get in the car.’ I generally only have to say it once before they realise that it really doesn’t matter to me if they walk out of the house naked. They all help wash, dry and repack lunch boxes ready for the next day and I keep on top of which child needs to bring what on which day by encouraging them to remember themselves. Even my five-yearold packs her own swimming bags and PE kits. I get the kids lining up their shoes, bags and lunchboxes at the door as they are getting ready. And if they forget something, I don’t stress about it. The natural consequences of a forgotten PE kit, or swim bag, is usually more powerful than continually reminding them.” Emma Sheppard, 37, has triplet daughters aged 4, who go to Dubai English Speaking School “Our mornings are rather full on! Things rarely run smoothly – it’s more a case of putting out small fires. The slightest of things can tip the trio over the edge. Something as simple as not having the right spoon to eat their cereal can escalate into rolling around on the floor, refusing to get dressed. The only way things run smoothly is if I say we are having a play date with their favourite friend Darcie that afternoon and warn them that Darcie will want to hear that they got to school without any drama.”

Tessa Kiernander, 35, has two boys, aged 5 and 2, at Horizon International School and Horizon Kids Nursery “My top tip for a stress-free morning routine is to wake up earlier than your kids. Since we started waking up 45 minutes before the kids have to be up, our mornings have been much more positive and less stressful. Staring 5:30am in the eye is brutal sometimes, but it is 100 percent better to get up and have

a coffee while doing lunchboxes, slowly ramping yourself up into the day, rather than being woken up by the kids and having to go from zero to 100 in nano seconds. Another thing is having a realistic time allocation. My eldest son needs 15 minutes to wake up and have a cup of warm milk, 30 minutes for breakfast and at least 10 minutes to get dressed and be ready to go out the door. It’s just a fact. So there’s no point trying to rush him to do it in less time as we will all end up stressed out and crying into our cornflakes.”

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON Anna Yates, a psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist and the owner of Mind Solutions (mindsolutions.ae), offers her expert tips for staying swan-like on the school run… “A stress-free start to the day is important for all of us, young and old. But for children going to nursery and school, if they start their day calm and relaxed, they will go in to school in a more positive frame of mind and be able to cope with whatever comes their way. “I think we really don’t consider the stress that children go through at nursery and school: imagine what it would be like to spend all day every day learning new things. It would be exhausting for us as adults, so we have to recognise that it must be equally exhausting for children. “As such, parents do their children a big favour by making sure they arrive at school happy, calm,

organised and ready for the day ahead. Of course, it won’t always go according to plan – there will be mornings where calm and organised descends into chaos and stress. When this happens, my advice to parents would be to stay calm yourself. Not only will this help you to deal with the situation in the best possible way but also your children pick up on your energy. If you are stressed, they will be stressed. If you are calm, it will be easier for them to calm themselves down too. “If it’s not going smoothly, remove yourself from the situation, or the room, if you need to and breathe. Another tip would be to avoid giving your children highly processed, high-sugar foods in the morning – many breakfast foods and drinks, such as cereals, fruits, yoghurts and juices, are packed with sugar. Also, take the time to prepare and get everything organised the night before, so you don’t have total bedlam first thing in the morning.”

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more to mindfulness than colouring books for grown-ups. We take a look at how this trend is helping children to reach their full potential

hether you like it or not, we have been (and are still being) dragged kicking and screaming from the familiar safety of our chaotic, busy, over-filled lives into ‘the moment’. Mindfulness and meditation tools are everywhere and it’s a movement that’s here to stay. Everything from parenting and eating to fitness and travel has had the mindful shakedown – and education is no different. Schools across the world have been adopting mindfulness in a bid to help children tune into the present and tune out of distractions, whether they be real, or imagined; at home, or at school; physical, or mental. “Mindfulness is a life skill that can help children in all areas of their lives”, says Richard Burnett, one of the founders of the Mindfulness in Schools Project in the UK. “The foundation of mindfulness is about training the muscle of our attention. It’s not about telling our young people not to think. It’s about recognising when thinking becomes over-thinking and knowing how to change gear into a mode of mind that is more nourishing. It’s not just about helping students get out of a bad space, but about helping them get into a good space.”

Happy is the new smart With the KHDA’s recent focus on wellbeing, never has there been a better time for schools in Dubai – and the rest of the UAE – to stop, breathe and focus on mindfulness. And, according to the teachers who are implementing these initiatives in your children’s classrooms, the positive impact is undeniable. Liam Cullinan is head of secondary at Nord Anglia International School Dubai, where mindfulness is high up on the agenda. He says, “We believe in the importance of mindfulness and heartfulness at Nord Anglia. So much

“Mindfulness is a life skill that can help children in all areas of their lives” so that we extended our morning tutor group sessions from 15 minutes to 25 minutes so that mindfulness exercises, such as yoga, breathing and reflection, could be incorporated into the day. We have dedicated areas around the school for mindfulness activities and moments, and our staff are involved in it as much as our students.” He continues, “I’m happy to see wellbeing being featured highly on the KHDA inspection framework and agenda. Results are one thing to aim for, but if you haven’t got a happy and relaxed child, then you simply won’t have the results.” Charles Grayhurst, principal of Arbor School, echoes these sentiments. “We believe that childhood and adolescence are important formative developmental stages that lay the groundwork for wellbeing and mental health in adulthood. We also believe that children who are centred, purposeful and happy make for better learners.” As such, students at Arbor School enjoy daily slots of ‘reflection time’ after breaks and at the end of the school day, a dedicated Reflection Garden and a curriculum enriched with emotional health and social skills. “The Arbor 8 values also help students learn how to cope with their emotions in a rapidly changing world,” says Grayhurst. “This provides them with opportunities to plan, collaborate, reflect and make meaningful changes to the

Here, she provides a quick summary of mindfulness. “For me, it means being fully present. Being here and now. That my thoughts are with you. I’m not thinking about tomorrow. I’m not analysing yesterday. I’m not thinking about something else I could do. I am really here. Mindfulness refers to the practice of being present, which might mean sitting still and simply breathing, or going for a walk and being in tune with my senses. But the way it is used in schools also includes taking time to think positively about others. In our very busy, crazy lives, mindfulness comes aptly at a time to teach us how to live life more fully. One of the best benefits of mindfulness is that more people are living with intention. And I think that’s important.”

Balancing out the noise You might be wondering why children these days need mindfulness in the classroom. After all, we didn’t have that in our day. But then our childhoods weren’t as fast-paced and technology-fuelled as theirs are. So we can’t begin to imagine what it feels like to grow up in their world any more than they could imagine what it would be like to grow up in a world without mobile phones and internet; this is one of the main benefits and aims of mindfulness – to act as an antidote to technology. Although these days, arguably, a necessary evil, studies show that adolescents addicted to the internet and smartphones suffer from a changed brain chemistry, resulting in depression, anxiety and drowsiness. Emily Jardine, a teacher at Gems Dubai American Academy High School, says that mindfulness is necessary to help students and teachers slow down. “Students these days are overwhelmed with the relentless connectivity of their lives. They are constantly interacting – on many different platforms, with many

different people – simultaneously. This affects their ability to do a single task effectively and with focus. Lack of focus leads to stress, not only because students are stressed out about their responsibilities and pressures, but also because they are unable to fully focus on any one moment. The negative effects of stress are well documented and can cause unhappiness and larger feelings of disconnectedness, affecting school performance, personal relationships and goal setting. It’s critical that students learn to manage stress – and mindfulness is a useful tool for this. Teachers also gain from slowing down and focusing on tasks one by one. Like any muscle, mindfulness is easier and more effective with practise.” Indeed, teachers seem to be taking to the mindfulness movement with gusto and reaping rewards for themselves, as well as for their young charges. In a survey by the Mindfulness in Schools Project, 100 percent of teachers said they would recommend the mindfulness training to their colleagues, while 95 percent said that mindfulness practice, and teaching the UK’s mindfulness curriculum, supported their overall quality of life. Deirdre Walsh heads up the wellbeing curriculum at Dubai English Speaking College and says that, for them, mindfulness for staff is just as important as mindfulness for students. She says, “It has been proven that having mindful teachers has a greater impact on students than just teaching mindfulness to students. We have weekly drop-in sessions for staff and regular events for them too, as well as wellbeing workshops for parents. A few weeks ago we had a Think Positive, Be Positive week, including mindfulness activities for staff and for students. On the final morning, we had the whole school outside holding hands in a long chain for a minute of mindfulness. It was a really lovely experience for everyone involved.”

Sophrology Created 60 years ago by Spanish psychiatrist and neurologist Professor Alfonso Caycedo, sophrology is a blend of breathing, relaxation, visualisation, meditation and body awareness exercises to achieve a sense of calmness, balance and happiness. Self-care The self-care movement encourages people to take a moment to prioritise their own physical, mental and emotional needs. It’s more about making choices that are kind to yourself than about following a specific practice. It’s free and you already have the skills at your disposal. Mindlessness On the flipside of mindfulness is the theory that sometimes being distracted is good for the brain, too. The supporters of mindlessness say that, for some people who suffer from negative thinking, mindfulness can exacerbate the negativity by encouraging them to dwell on their thoughts. For these people, immersing themselves in an activity they enjoy can be even more beneficial than mindfulness. Happiness science According to the findings of the latest Global Wellness Summit, one of the biggest new trends is the scientific study of happiness and how to help people achieve it. One suggestion from the summit shows a mathematical equation where “happiness” equals “the events of your life” minus “your expectations of your life”.
