Better Education Guide
Small school is a big decision Asking the right questions wil help select the right nursery Nursery education will teach your child many fundamental lessons in life: how to make new friends, socialise, interact, share, read, write and play. There are lots of factors to consider when choosing a nursery, and the nearest one isn’t always the right option. Your child will be in the hands of nursery staff for many hours, so safety is key, as well as the curriculum. At this early stage in life, your child will take their first steps to learning and finding out about the world. As parents, it’s your responsibility to ask the right questions to determine how well the nursery will look after your son or daughter while they’re away from home. Find the safest one by asking your selected top venues these essential questions: March 2014
Be smart, be safe 1.
2. 3. 4.
5. 6. 7. 8.
How many staff members are paediatric First Aid and CPR trained? How often are these certificates renewed? Do children and staff practice emergency evacuation? How often? What are the nursery’s policies for children with allergies? How clean is the nursery? What cleaning materials are used and where are they stored? What risk assessments are undertaken? What is the ratio of staff to children in the classroom? And in outside play areas? Are children monitored at all times? Is there an open-door policy for parents? Are CCTV cameras installed in each classroom? 5
Be curriculum confident A strong programme will provide a solid foundation for your child when they go to big school. Keep in mind that you, as parents, should be communicated to by the nursery on a regular basis, so you can extend the same learning themes to your child at home. This will help engage your child at nursery and encourage learning in different environments. Ask these questions to find out more about the education your child will receive at this early stage in their life: 1. 2. 3.
4.
6
Which curriculum is used? What are the key concepts children will learn from this programme? Are teachers confident in applying curriculum to learning? How will this be done? Are staff members trained in education
and teaching? Are they required to complete additional training hours? 5. What is the daily schedule for your child’s class? 6. What evidence of learning is shared with parents? How often are children assessed? 7. Are extra activities included to extend learning beyond the classroom? (Such as music, languages, ICT, fitness, outdoor play, indoor play, art and cooking.) 8. Is there an accredited programme for FS1 and FS2? 9. Are there areas for children to learn through play? Enquire about libraries, water play areas, art zones, tech stations, gardens, ponds and vegetable plots. How often are these used? 10. Will there be any field trips? How will these be conducted? 11. How are children prepared to move onto to big school?

A lesson in location
Affordability is the leading topic for families wanting to move It’s not just kids that have to do their homework. Research is essential when it comes to relocating nearer to good schools, choosing familyfriendly communities and maintaining a sound financial balance. You may find that the issue with schools is not the place it’s in but getting a place in – with more and more people moving to and settling in Dubai, schools are inundated with applications and many parents do not get their first choice. For some, proximity may not be as important as community or affordability. Many families may prefer to live outside of the city where children can play in large gardens and cycle along leafy streets. Arabian Ranches is beautiful for those that can afford it. Centrally, Jumeirah is a lovely leasehold location for families, with good access to schools.
However, it is expensive and property is snapped up quickly. The talk of the town is affordability. Tuition fees are not cheap, and there are many additional costs that soon add up. As well as uniform and books there are dance, music and sports lessons to pay for, to provide a
Village Circle and Motor City are also still reasonable. Mixed-use developments are becoming increasingly popular with families as they have communal swimming pools, children’s play areas, parks, lakes and shops close to hand. These factors make Jumeirah Village Circle an attractive option. Location
Many communities have playgrounds and sports centres for active children full and rounded education. Although rental values are estimated to rise a further 15% to 20% this year, incomes are not, so it is wise to look at affordable areas in the city or move to the outskirts. Barsha is proving popular in terms of affordability. The area is quite central and is very close to Sheikh Zayed Road and Mall of the Emirates. The Gardens, Jumeirah
is the winner here, with four schools and four parks nearby. It’s also strategically placed between Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. If your child’s school is on the eastern side of the city, Bur Dubai and Deira could be good options. Further out, property prices in Silicon Oasis are reasonable – and easier to commute from than Sharjah.

A healthy lunch leads to healthy learning The number 1,365 may not mean much to you but it is during these first days of a child’s life, from the mother’s pregnancy to the child’s third birthday, that excellent nutrition is the most important. “A healthy diet means the child can grow with optimal health, promoting physical, intellectual and emotional growth and a promising future for all children,” says Bernadette King-Turner, director at Beautiful Minds Nurseries. Eighty-five per cent of your development, especially mentally, takes place during the first five years of life. The growth of a child’s body and mind is optimised by nutritional foods that are grown naturally, such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, seeds, legumes, nuts and fish. 10
Healthy breakfasts and lunches (with a no-nut policy for allergies) are provided at all Beautiful Minds Nurseries: Yellow Brick Road Nursery, Emerald City Nursery, Crystal Valley Nursery and Indigo Valley Nursery. “Our daily children’s breakfast and lunch meals are nutritional, wholesome and life giving,” explains Bernadette. “We believe it is our responsibility to holistically care for all children, which is why we feed life with life and not chemicals or artificial ingredients. “We offer wise and genuine nutritional advice for our children’s parents and guardians. It is a revelation to many parents when they learn about real and whole foods and how important their children’s food intake is upon their lives.”
Healthy lunchboxes don’t have to be boring. Opt for bright fruits and vegetables, like strawberries, oranges and carrot batons, so healthy snacks look exciting. If you keep your kids guessing about what’s in their lunchbox, you will keep them entertained and well nourished as they focus on their studies. Dr Mai Aljaber, general practitioner and head of the Women’s Wellness Initiative at Healthpoint, suggests these simple solutions for the perfect school lunchbox:
WATER In the gruelling summer months, freeze the bottle overnight to create an ice pack that will keep food cool and melt by lunchtime.
FRUITS AND VEGGIES Fresh fruit is always best. Try to avoid dried fruit as they are high in sugar. For picky eaters, conceal vegetables in a sandwich – cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes work well. A hummus dip will give carrots a flavoursome boost.
CARBS Pack whole grains and high-fibre carbohydrates like pita bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, focaccia and rice cakes (a personal favourite of mine).
PROTEIN Protein is key to any nutritious meal, helping us to burn fat 12
and feel fuller for longer. Hard-boiled eggs, lamb, beef and chicken are nutritious sandwich fillers.
DAIRY Aside from low-fat cheese, reduced-fat yogurt and reduced-fat milk give your child needed nutrients such as calcium to make bones grow.
MILK In our region it’s easy to find camels’ milk, which is packed with immunity-boosters and is lower in fat than cows’ milk. Almond milk and rice milk are also good alternatives.
Colourful food makes healthy snacks seem more exciting

Swimming with dolphins is once-in-a-lifetime, seeing seals paint is unreal, and watching birds play basketball is impossible – right? Wrong. March 2014
Learn about the adventures of dolphins, seals and exotic birds at the country’s only dolphinarium in Dubai Creek. You can get up close to nature
at Dubai Dolphinarium and learn important facts about how these animals live, feed and breed in their natural habitats. 13
Powerful connections Swimming with these intelligent creatures has proven health benefits. Such a unique and interactive experience is known to reduce stress levels and have a very positive impact on children with special needs. By being so close, kids and dolphins can really connect on a very powerful level. The centre has a KHDAapproved education programme, too, which caters to children aged four to 18. They can learn about dolphins, marine life ecology and sustainability. The dolphinarium works very closely with schools across UAE, teaching over 1,000 students very month.
Friends with fins There are six adorable bottlenose dolphins at the centre: Enya, Ksyusha, Jerry, Tetka, Fekla and Kai. They love children and will happily be their friend – kids able to swim from aged five onwards can swim and play with three of them for a truly unforgettable experience. The centre’s northern fur seals are also very playful. In the interactive shows you can watch dolphins and seals dance, sing, juggle, play ball, jump through hoops and even paint. It’s a real eye-opener, showing kids how intelligent animals can be. 14

Dubai is also home to sharks, stingrays, giraffes, camels, lions, flamingos and falcons. Do you know where they live? Who’s a birdbrain? Join in the fun at UAE’s only exotic bird-show, for an actionpacked experience with over 20 different birds and parrots. Have you ever seen a cockatoo paint? Or a macaw hoist a flag and play basketball? Or had a chat with a sociable African grey, who speaks English and Chinese and is currently brushing up on his Arabic? The saying ‘birdbrain’ is certainly unjustified, as you’ll soon find out when you spend the day with these intelligent birds. After all, can you speak Chinese? March 2014

The grownup grad Anmol Pinto, now 28 and a successful graphic designer, looks back on his schooling in UAE
Which schools did you attend? I was born in Abu Dhabi so I went to Saint Jospeh’s School from the ages of five and ten and then to Abu Dhabi Indian School until I was 15. I moved to Dubai in 2000 and went to Our Own English High School until I graduated at 18. After this I continued studying at Dubai’s American University. I gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Advertising, with a concentration on graphic design. Did your degree help your career? Yes, it did. I am now the Visual Design And Digital Marketing Manager at Pacha Ibiza, in Dubai. In this profession there is a technical side that you do need to be taught. 16

University also shows you how the whole design and creative industry works and I think I really benefited from this. I wouldn’t have learnt all this any other way.
did a good job. I experienced both American and Indian education, which really has shaped me and how I am today. School is very influential.
Did you know what you wanted to be? I didn’t know what I wanted to do at school. I was always into music and my parents didn’t prevent me from pursuing my passions. So I looked at what the university had to offer creatively, and design and advertising caught my eye. I have absolutely no regrets. I think my profession is a perfect fit for me.
Did you enjoy school? I did enjoy it. I went to an all-boys school so perhaps we missed out on some things but at university it was mixed gender and there was all kinds of nationalities there. You learn a lot from interacting with so many different people. Dubai is known for its mix of culture and it shows in the education system too. I like that.
What was your favourite subject? My favourite subject at school was English Literature. I was always into books and reading and writing.
What extra skills did you develop? In school I played the drums – and basically anything that would make a lot of noise. I went to music club and entered competitions. At uni my friends and I started a rock scene and we would throw concerts and invite other schools to join in. There was a huge underground music scene in Dubai five or ten years ago and it was great to be at the centre of it.
Did you have a good education? I think my schooling was great. However, the education system, just like UAE and many other sectors here, is still up-and-coming and is itself learning along the way as it gets older. But the schools and teachers 18
What advice can you give children today? Work placements are very important. In the UK and USA there is a culture of working from a young age and gaining experience, and this is a good thing. I do see more kids doing internships and work placements now but it should
Learning the tricks of the trade at univerisity will help you enter your profession be encouraged at school. Kids growing up here should realise that there is only so much you can learn through textbooks, and they should experience the real world by working in it. They will also learn whether or not they like that profession, which is important.
