...to the Spring 2010 issue of Better Education, designed for parents in the UAE. We have compiled this guide as a solid base of reference to help you make an informed decision about which of the UAE’s schools, universities and nurseries are best for your children. For further research on those schools based in Dubai – both state and private – we recommend a visit to khda.gov.ae, where you can search for reports from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB), who grade the schools from outstanding through to unsatisfactory.

How This Guide Works When we devised this guide it was our aim to make it as user-friendly as possible, so that the information is easily accessible. As such, the schools and nurseries are first listed in order of the curriculum they teach, then alphabetically. In the universities section, you’ll find a breakdown of courses followed by alphabetically-sorted listings of the institutions. We wish you luck in your search and hope you find the perfect place for your child!

Choosing a curriculum that’s right for your child is as important as picking a school that suits them. Find out more with our crash course in the English, American and International Baccalaureate curricula…

The English National Curriculum Mr Andy Homden,

regional affairs permeates the curriculum throughout the school.

Principal of the Dubai British School

How is it seen by universities? What is special about the English National Curriculum? Within the framework of the National Curriculum, schools are free to plan and organise teaching and learning in the way that best meets the needs of their pupils. The flexible framework encourages schools to develop programmes that give a strong grounding in key subject areas, while allowing them to explore other exciting areas.

Globally recognised assessment equivalencies allow A-Levels to be used for university placement around the world, notably in the USA, Australasia, Canada and Europe. In the USA, A-Level exam success often results in advanced placement, accelerated honors programs, and ultimately early completion of Masters Degrees at university.

The International Baccalaureate Curriculum Dan Young,

How much subject choice does it allow the individual student? In the primary years, students work within a broad curriculum framework which promotes creativity and independent learning. As students grow and identify their strengths, they are allowed to choose subjects that align with their abilities and interests.

What are the main cultural and community aspects of the curriculum? The curriculum allows schools to adapt to be locally focused but globally engaged. At the Dubai British School we place great emphasis on learning the Arabic language, raising awareness of cultural issues and connecting with our local community. Service projects are central to the Extra Curricular programme, while an understanding of local, national and

GEMS World Academy

What is special about the International Baccalaureate? To comprehend the IBO Programme, one needs to understand its mission: ‘The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.’ To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and assessment.

How much subject choice does it allow the individual student? In addition to subject requirements, the IB diploma has the extra requirements of an

extended essay, theory of knowledge and extra-curricular activities that are not assessed known as ‘creativity, action, service’ (called CAS). There are six group core requirements: language, a second language, individual and societies, maths and computer sciences, the arts, and experimental sciences.

What are the main cultural and community aspects of the curriculum? The aim of all IB programs (be it PYP, MYP, or the IBDP) is to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The entire programme encourages all its learners to be: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective.

How is it seen by universities? The IBDP is viewed as an excellent preuniversity course of study. Universities send recruiters to meet and encourage IBDP students to apply to their programmes, often offering scholarships to those with high IBDP profiles.

The US Curriculum Robin Appleby,

Superintendent, Dubai American Academy (DAA)

How much subject choice does it allow the individual student? In Elementary School, the curriculum is designed to offer every student exposure to a full range of age-appropriate subjects: we want all our young learners to have access to all areas so they can begin to develop their passions. In the Middle School years, all of these areas are also covered, with the addition of more arts electives and second languages such as French or Spanish. In the High School, options expand further still: as students develop in age and maturity, the range of subject matter widens rather than narrows, allowing graduates to apply to any university programme of study.

What are the main cultural and community aspects of the curriculum? The American curriculum teaches and values the many different cultures of the world. This is easy in a school like Dubai American Academy, where we have students from 85 different countries. We celebrate all cultures and encourage our children to share their national identities through programmes such as Model United Nations, United Nations Day, and UAE Day. The curriculum is fully inclusive, and our differences and commonalities are celebrated by all in our community.

How is it seen by universities? What is special about the US curriculum? The US teaching style embraces inquiry-based, hands-on teaching methods and learning strategies geared to individualised instruction. The academic curriculum is based on American standards of achievement in all subject areas, and supported by a huge range of co-curricular activities that ensure students have the opportunity to develop fully as individuals.

The American diploma is accepted for entrance by all US universities and colleges, and is increasingly recognised by international schools of higher education. The quality of the American diploma is ensured by institutional accreditation. DAA is accredited by the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

Better Education Guide Spring 2010

Parents and students reading together at GEMS Royal Dubai School

How one UAE school group is mapping an exciting new way for parents to interact with their kids – and to turbo-charge their education… A quiet revolution is taking place in the world of education, and it’s starting in the UAE. It’s being promoted by the GEMS network of schools, who have come up with one of those ideas which is so simple and so clever that you can’t work out why it’s not been done before. So here’s the pitch. In an average day, your child spends only a small percentage of their waking hours at school. The rest of their time is spent with their family, who teach them values, manners and a lot of practical skills. But for some reason, school learning is seen to stop at the school gates – it’s the duty of the teacher to educate, not the parents. But what if even a small amount of the large part of the day that was spent at home were harnessed effectively to continue and expand

4

your child’s education? What if parents, with intelligent and tailored backup from schools, engaged with their child’s learning process, reinforcing what they learn each day and introducing new concepts and study strategies to them? A series of recent studies suggest that when parents engage in this way with children, they add the equivalent of between two and three years of additional learning onto an average school career. With this in mind, and in a world-first move, GEMS have appointed education policy expert Wendy Berliner to the post of ‘Director of Parental Engagement’. It’s her job to forge the powerful links between school and home life which lead to a huge boost in learning potential for students and an an enriched experience for them and their parents.

“There’s one key principle - that it is vital for parents to engage, and engage in the correct way, with their kids’ education”

Parents and kids at GEMS Wellington Primary School

Berliner’s strategy has three strands: bringing the fruits of the latest pedagogical research to parents; using internet tools to bring the classroom closer to the home; and organising parent-student events and big-name speakers to glue the whole process together. When we meet, Berliner is bubbling over with enthusiasm for the programme. We discuss a recent article in the New York Times, which examines some fascinating research by Carole Dweck which shows that children can be demotivated by being told they’re smart. Instead of praising your child’s intelligence, the article states, you should praise the effort they put in. This conditions them to try hard when faced with tough new subjects, rather than backing away from them. Dweck’s research is compelling: she gave a group of children IQ tests and afterwards she praised half of them for intelligence and half for effort. They were offered two options for their next round of tests – one which would be tougher than the first test but which would teach them more, and one which was easy. An astonishing 90 per cent of the kids who had

been praised for their effort rather than their intelligence picked the tougher tests. Meanwhile, the majority of the kids praised for their intelligence decided to take the simple test. It’s exactly this sort of counter-intuitive but vital finding – that we can actually hold our kids back by praising them for being smart – that Berliner is committed to bringing to parents. All the messages she’s putting out are centred around one key principle – that it is vital for parents to engage, and engage in the correct way, with their kids’ education. ‘It’s a no-brainer to actually involve parents,’ says Berliner, ‘and the biggest single thing they can do is talk to their children, have wide-ranging conversations with them. It’s not about cracking the whip over homework, it’s talking about what your child is learning, which means knowing what is going on in school.’ In order to facilitate this, GEMS have adopted a raft of innovative online ideas. ‘We’ve done classroom streaming, live on the web to parents,’ says Berliner. ‘Royal Dubai School has been a pioneer in this area.

makes it easy to ask specific questions – ‘So, tell me what you learned about gravity today?’ – which can lead into mind-expanding, bonding conversations. Berliner has always practised what she They have a lot of Emirates pilots’ children preaches. ‘I brought my own child up this way’, there, so wherever the pilots are in the world she says. ‘I have a twenty four-year-old son they can look in to see what their children are and I applied these principles with him. I was doing in their lessons. Royal Dubai School has an education correspondent back in Britain taken this a step further with classroom blogs, so I was reading all the research and it made which tell parents what their kids are going to me see myself as my son’s teacher who just learn this term. Entries for the Festival of the Mask

”All of the GEMS schools took part in a ‘Festival of the Mask’ – parents and kids painted masks together at home ” together students and their parents – starting with a dedicated ‘Parent Engagement Week’ in January this year. There have been around 250 events so far, involving some 20,000 parents and featuring some really imaginative ideas. At Dubai Modern High School, parents taught a subject of their choice to a grade of their choice – and at Jumeirah Primary School, kids taught lessons to parents and set them homework. At Royal Dubai School they had a ‘Pyjama Party Read-in’, at which parents and kids shared their favourite books. At Dubai American Academy there was a parent / student banquet and at Our Own Indian High School, parents and children made collages together. All of the GEMS schools also took part in a ‘Festival of the Mask’ – parents and kids painted masks together at home and they

were displayed at The Westminster School at a carnival of dance and music. And every school sent a child and a parent to the Parental Engagement launch evening at Wellington International School where the parents handed over a symbolic pledge to the kids, promising that they would support them as part of the parent community. Berliner’s programme is going down a storm with parents, teachers and students alike – the response has been almost universally positive. A lot of people in the educational community across the world are also keeping a close eye on what happens at GEMS to see whether they should adopt similar programmes themselves. ‘Ten years from now, I think there will be a parental engagement officer in every school,’ says Berliner, ‘It will be like school councillors these days. It’s a small, low cost shift in mindset to make but it adds up to a big change. As Australian academic Don Edgar says, “The purpose of school is to help a family educate a child”, and happily we can help make this happen.’

Better Education Guide Spring 2010

In the wake of the global financial downturn, good management and business leadership is needed more than ever. It’s a situation that has accelerated the trend for MBA (Masters in Business Administration) study in the UAE. But before enrolling on an MBA course you need to ensure it’s the right one: to find out how to do this, Better Education sought the advice of Professor Christopher Abraham, Senior Vice President of SP Jain, Dubai-Singapore.

How important is an MBA? It’s extremely critical to have these days. Time was when a bachelor degree was all that you needed to set out on your career, but it’s simply not enough anymore. You have to acquire a masters degree. It’s imperative if you’re going to work in an area like finance, retail or management. To that extent, schools like SP Jain play a key role in preparing people for these professions.

What are my choices if I want to study for an MBA in the UAE? In many ways you’re spoilt for choice but most business schools are very traditional in terms of what they teach. The courses are based on knowledge, and knowledge in the Googleised world is a given. For instance, I wouldn’t have to take a course in finance if I wanted knowledge of it, as I can get that from Google. What is required are the ‘smart’ skills, those you learn through work and practice. There has to be a combination of the two.

So if I’m looking at a curriculum, what are the ‘smart’ skills it should teach me? If you look at the interviews that some of the leading business schools conduct with the major corporates, the million dollar question

8

asked by the schools is ‘what skills are you looking for in a graduate?’ And increasingly, their reply is leadership, team building, communication, negotiation, decision-making, problem solving, innovation and creativity, as well an ability to manage in situations of uncertainty, change and crisis.

What would a good MBA course demand as an entry level requirement? A good standard degree and, very importantly, a minimum of three years’ work experience. There would then be a very serious process comprising an aptitude test, a group discussion and a case study followed by a personal interview.

How are MBA graduates from UAE schools perceived globally? You hear of this perception that work experience gained in the UAE isn’t held in the same esteem as that gained in Europe or the US, but is that the case with education? I’ve been here for 15 years and that used to be the case, yes, but it’s changed. If I look at SP Jain as an example, when we set up business here in 2004 people knew the name but wanted to see what we would do with it, but our passion for maintaining and, in some

“You have to acquire a masters degree. It’s imperative if you’re going to work in an area like finance, retail or management.” cases, exceeding the standards of our mother campus has stood us in very good stead. The proof of the pudding is in the eating and it’s a fact that large India-based companies like IBM and Hewlett Packard recruit from both our India and Dubai campuses and offer the same starting packages. Our graduates are looked upon as the equal of graduates of our mother campus.

Is that desire to be as prestigious as the mother campus symptomatic of other franchise universities in the UAE? It’s certainly the case with some of them, yes, and the KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority), are putting measures in place to ensure that the standards of the mother campus are met. It won’t be tolerated if these standards aren’t met.

In terms of the standard of UAE universities in general, how do they compare globally? The KHDA, which is like a quality assurance agency, is doing a phenomenal job in terms

of standardising the quality of the universities here and it’s a process that’s continually evolving. Somewhere like DIAC (Dubai International Academy City) is a fascinating concept. I’ve lived and worked in different parts of the world and nowhere else would you have in one single area universities from different parts of the world offering different learning experiences. To me, as a professor, the mere fact that we’re here is itself a learning experience. Walk around DIAC and it’s a world of different nationalities and cultures. It’s amazing. There’s nowhere like it.

So what would you say to parents who are considering sending their children to universities abroad? Going back 15 years, you had no choice but to send your kids back home or, if you had the money, to universities in the UK or US. But now there is a choice and as a parent, as a professor, I’d prefer for my kids to study here. There has been a remarkable turnaround in the perceptions of parents in this regard. Thanks to the visionary focus of the government, the immigration laws grant universities an open mandate to invite students from all over the world to study here and that helps swell the standard of study. That process continues.

NEED TO KNO

Looking to invest in your own or your child’s education but not sure how to pay for it? Here’s what you need to know…

What is ADCB Ambition Loan for Education? ADCB’s Ambition Loan for Education is the only product in the country designed specifically to fund your education. Whether you want to study here or abroad, it brings the best institutions within the reach of you or your child, meaning you don’t have to settle for second best. Who is it designed for? The Ambition Loan for Education is designed for both working professionals looking to pursue further education and parents wishing to finance their child’s studies. It can be used to pay school or university fees. How much can I borrow? Student finance is currently offered for amounts between AED10,000 and AED150,000, which can be repaid in periods of between 6 and 48 months.

Does the loan have to be spent in schools and universities in the UAE? No, ADCB can send funds to educational institutions around the world. How do I qualify for the loan? You must be a UAE resident with a minimum of three months in your current job, and a minimum salary of AED8,000 per month. Can my loan be pre-approved? For the loan to be finalised we need to see an offer letter or invoice from the educational institution. However, we can tell you if you’re eligible and how much you can borrow before you’ve decided where you want to study. How does the ADCB Ambition Loan for Education differ from a personal loan? The Ambition Loan for Education has been

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

designed specifically to fund education. The money is paid directly to the educational institution, the loan is unsecured, meaning there is no collateral, and there is no need for a salary transfer. Why has ADCB launched this new loan? ADCB aims to unlock ambition, and there is no greater enabler of this than education. By acting as a driver of education we are helping not just the people of the UAE, but the UAE itself. “We want to be seen as a responsible institution which helps people to achieve their ambitions,” says Rahul Unny, Vice President and Head of Unsecured Loans at ADCB. “The Ambition Loan for Education has been designed to ensure that finance, or rather the lack of it, does not get in the way of the higher education aspirations of any meritorious student.”

Why does ADCB feel it’s so important to invest in education? Education is a cause that perfectly fits in the bank’s corporate social responsibility initiatives. ADCB has a longstanding commitment to developing the UAE’s human resources, and promoting education is a great way to drive economic development. As Mr Unny says: “We constantly endeavour to uphold the educational development in the UAE to embody the Government’s plan to build the next generation of students, enabling them to take part in the evolutionary process of the UAE.” How do I find out more? Contact ADCB by texting the word ‘Eduloan’ to 2626 or by visiting www.adcb.com.

The inside track on…

Repton School in Dubai

So, tell me about Repton School in Dubai. The original Repton School was established in Derbyshire, England in 1557 and remains one of the most popular and respected boarding schools in the country. Its 450 years of tradition and experience make it popular among parents who want the very best education and environment for their children. Repton School in Dubai was opened in 2007, and has a boys’ and seniors’ boarding school, with a Girls’ Boarding School set to open for the 2010/11 academic year.

What can Repton School in Dubai offer my kids? First and foremost, a world-class British education. Repton teaches children aged from three to eighteen an international curriculum which is rooted in The National Curriculum For England, but also brings in the best practice from the world-renowned International Baccalaureate programme (the school has IB World status, which it achieved in record time). The school is also home to the Repton English Academy Dubai, which has been created for students who are not native language English speakers and who want to improve their written and spoken fluency. Your kids will also love the extraordinary number of extracurricular activities on offer at Repton School in Dubai, which range from rock climbing to photography, as well as the state-of–the-art leisure facilities and sports programme.

Tell me about the boarding school… The facilities for boarders are first rate, and have been designed to create a strong homely feel – you won’t find better at any boarding school in the UK. Each boarder has their own bedsit, with an en-suite bathroom shared with another pupil; when they get to the sixth form, students have a private en-suite study bedroom. The girls’ boarding school, set to open this year, is in a completely separate building, with facilities for 125 girls, resident tutors, a matron and housemistress and domestic staff.

What do Repton kids go on to do? Repton kids are educated in a stimulating and caring environment that prepares them for happy and successful lives. The excellence of the academic and sporting training and extra-curricular options on offer means they are well set up to move on to further education at some of the most prestigious universities in the world. And Repton produces students who go on to excel in every career imaginable: famous Old Reptonians include the author Roald Dahl, journalist Jeremy Clarkson, singer Beulah and Olympic champion Harold Abrahams.

How can I find out more? Contact the admissions department on 04 426 9318 / admissions@reptondubai.org who will be delighted to give you more information and guide you through the admissions process. 15
